On the 2.1 ROM, the keyboard had a little microphone button that allowed you to perform voice input. On the new 2.2 keyboard, this has been replaced with a language-switching button. How do you bring up the voice input button? I saw a few references to swiping, but it doesn't seem to work.
Mine has the voice input button not sure why yours doesn't...

Mine has it.
Mine does not. I'm running the froyo stock rooted (odex) rom. How do I get this back?
Thanks,

Ok - so I'm not crazy. At least a few of you are having this problem. Maybe we just have to wait for the "OFFICIAL" release? Though I don't understand why they would have moved/removed this feature.
I'm convinced the .3 release is the official release... The .1 (Ava) release is the one I think HTC was concerned about. We'll see tomorrow, I suppose.
Dave
Ok, I managed to "fix" it on my phone.
I flashed netarchy's "final" 2.2 OTA rooted image on my phone, and noticed that I had my voice input back. As soon as I ran Titanium Backup and restored everything is when I started having the problem.
Solution? Just wipe the whole damn thing, and selectively restore what I needed from Titanium Backup (which doesn't seem to include the package that causes my keyboard to lose voice input).

I restored all of my apps, but none of the phone settings the second time around, and everything worked fine.

Excellent. Gotta love the forums
You can fix it by going into the keyboard settings and making sure English is the only language is selected. Look for my [A] thread.

Since you said you were able to fix it by just using TI to backup what you wanted, is there a chance you can backup a working IME version? I flashed over DC 3.2.3, so that may be the reason.

Sorry for the late reply. It wasn't that I backed up a good version, it's that I didn't restore the bad version. In other words, I'm using the exact keyboard that came with the 2.2 update. I tried to restore everything EXCEPT for the keyboard, but that didn't seem to do it either. It must not be named properly, or some other non-obvious config that is interfering with it.
Has this not been solved yet? is there no way to grab the sense 2.2 keyboard app and then force the voice input button on there?
Anyone have a solution that doesn't require wiping your phone?

Doing a TI backup, wiping and restoring with TI took virtually no effort and reconfiguration. It is by far the easiest way to do this.
Do a batch TI backup for just your apps + data, then manually backup the green items and pick a few of the others you need (voicemail, user dictionary, etc). All I have to do now is update the TI backups I already have to prepare myself for a full wipe.

So I enabled this on CM6 not too long ago, I recently wiped and updated to the latest version of it, and low and behold all my applications started getting installed from the Market on their own... How does this work, and is my data going to be there as well?
I do not believe it restores data

It only restore the Market-downloadable applications. Your data (unless on an SD card) will not be restored.
Yea, no data was restored... kinda crappy... oh well, better than nothing.

Titanium Backup:

HOWEVER, must have root.
MUST.
Your adventure may just be beginning.
What Google Backup are you talking about?
Oh. If that's what you're talking about then I'll pass.
Google backup restores wifi profiles too.
But I love titanium and did purchase the full version.
Swyped on my EVO
I use Titanium Backup because it backs up my settings, apps, data, preferences, WiFi networks, Bluetooth pairings, Cyanogenmod Settings, etc.
Really, all I do after a wipe is to skip to the home screen, open market, add my Google Account, download Titanium Backup, and go to Menu>Batch>Restore everything
It's a Google backup feature...enabled in cm roms only...it's actually quite nice if you are flashing roms everyday
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Is there anyway to get rid of the backup feature, it's pretty pointless without data and I'd rather restore my apps with Titanium...
I just wiped and reflashed and when it asked if I wanted to use Google backup, I unchecked the box, but it started downloading everything anyway...
Nevermind, I found it...
So as far as I understand it, this is part of the ASOP. So way did htc/sprint take it out?

Titanium is awesome and worth every penny for the paid version if you switch roms frequently. If you don't mind a little extra button mashing the free version works well.
It saves data and the version of the app your backing up. Which is really useful if you don't want the updated version of any particular app.
I just recently reflashed to Warm 2.2 release 5 and now I can't get the warm themed HTC_IME_Mod to work. I have tried swype and other keyboards, but I still really prefer the customizable HTC_IME_MOD keyboard. All help on this will be much appreciated. This could be a number of things! Beginning with the HTC IME mod.apk that you're trying to install not being signed to the rom itself.........What I would do is this!

Unfortunately I have not yet reached the "10 post requirement" to post in that forum yet... Also, multiple people asked similar questions on this subject in that particular thread and it was never addressed. I do appreciate your input though.

What happens when you try to install it? Does it install and then not work or force close,or does it not install at all? You're rather vague, by saying "it doesn't work". Is it the keyboard that is linked in Myns first post? What are the steps you took to try installing it?

I used the update.zip listed on Myn's thread and installed it like any other flashable app. When I select it as the input source for my keyboard it begins to repeatedly force close without ever even displaying.

Okay, got ya. Now I know where you stand. If I were presented with that problem, I would first try clearing cache and dalvik from recovery. If that doesn't fix it, I would uninstall the keyboard, reboot, wipe cache and dalvik, then try again. I've never had any issues with the keyboard before, but this is what id try if I did.

I will definitely give all of that a shot. Though this will come off as amatuerish, I'm going to ask anyways: How do I uninstall the keyboard? I have used Astro to locate the program, then selected it to open the app manager where I am presented with the option to uninstall it. I select unistall and it says that it is unable to uninstall. I can delete the update.zip, but that has no effect either. Also, does clearing the cache and dalvik have any negative impact on the ROM or any data from any of my other programs?

To keep it simple, just reflashing the keyboard should over write itself, so no real need to actually uninstall I guess.
However if you did want to uninstall, you'll need a root level file explorer, preferably Root Explorer, but you can use ES file explorer as a free alternative if you don't have root explorer. The keyboard will be in the /system/app folder, as htc ime or something. Now, its possible that there could be some libs associated with the keyboard that need to be removed , but I wouldn't know without looking at the file. Either way, probably just reflash the keyboard after wiping cache and dalvik cache. That will be the easiest to try.
Also, you're sure the keyboard.you're using is for RLS5? I can't recall if there were compatibility issues between rls4 and rls5
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Thanks for the quick responses. I'll just try reflashing after wiping the cache/dalvik as you suggested. I would not say that I am positive about the compatibility, The keyboard I'm attemting to install is listed in the optional add-ons for release 5 though. I know a few others had this problem, but I never saw any kind of response from Myn or anyone else regarding it. I'm trying to adapt to the swype keyboard, as it may be my only choice moving forward (short of reflashing back to release 4), but I find it somewhat awkward. I suppose with enough time I will get over it, but I would sure like to try to get the HTC IME mod back if possible...

I hate the htc keyboard, lol I can't stand the arrows. I always hit them by accident. Even the one without the arrows sucks for me. Just don't like it. Have you tried any of the gingerbread keyboards? I like them better, and have an easier time typing on it. I suggest trying one out, if you haven't yet. This keyboard does not have the dumb arrows either. Instead it lets you use gestures for several things (ie: shifting to/from CAPS, skipping to beginning/end of the word, hiding the keyboard) as well as the volume buttons on the side of the phone to move the cursor left/right. It also has a quick key for emoticons...(lame I know, but I use them often enough that it is very convenient). Again, thanks for the assistance!

You're welcome. And yup, I remember using that keyboard on myns, before I converted to the gb keyboard. I did like being able to use the volume rocker to move the cursor, that was convenient. I just love the scrollable toolbar on the gb keyboard, and the layout a bit better too. Thankfully there are tons of options with android, so everyone can use a keyboard that suits their own preference. Love choices.

Several times I have edited my app drawer order, grouping apps by type on each page (a page for games, a page for internet stuff, a page for utilities, etc.), creating folders, etc. Then I hit Menu > Save, and everything is fine, until I reboot my phone. Then it loses the app order, and a few apps get seemingly randomly moved to their own pages, so the total number of pages grows from about 5 to upwards of 8 or 9. It seems like the most recently added apps get moved, but not always. I move them all back how they should be, but they only stay until a reboot.
Anyone else have this happen? Or better, found out why? Or even better, how to make them stay?
Really? Does nobody sort their apps? Or nobody has had this problem?

I don't sort them in the App Drawer. I leave them arranged alphabetically grid or list. I do arrange the ones I most often use somewhere on the 7 Home Screens though.
They will not stay. It is an annoying problem. I use folders now to group my apps. And I have my apps sorted to stop the spacing issue.

Still happening on Starburst ROM 1.5, so the problem it's with TouchWiz and is not ROM-specific.
I made a backup of TWLauncher with Titanium, so when my drawer gets really messed up I restore data from the backup (killing the running process) and it does restore my app layout as it was when I made the backup. Not a solution, but a lot quicker than re-sorting 50 apps. If only I could figure out how to trigger a save of the layout...it seems to just do it occasionally and I can't figure out what triggers it (certainly not when the Save button gets pressed...as if that makes sense).
Had anyone replicated this issue on TouchWiz 3.5? (or is it 4.0... whatever the flashable one is that's newer than what ships with the device).

Bummer. Guess we have to wait for an official update to get an updated launcher.
are you saving the changes ?
You have to make your changes then hit menu again and save changes.
otherwise they don't stick.
after clicking save don't press anything for 30 secs or so
that seems to do it for me

Okay, I'll do some organizing and give that a try.
hi all,
after updating my galaxy s2 from 2.3.3 to 2.3.5 with kies, i had the same problem about sorting applications page.
i didnt reset my phone before or after updating with kies. first i tought that i might be about this. i was looking for a solution and i read these posts. without resetting my phone i just tried to delete files of TW Launcher.
Settings>Applications>Manage applications>All(tab)
find and tap "TW Launcer"
tap "Clear data" button.
after that my home screen and applications screen look default.
applications screen sorted alphabetical.
i customized my home and app screen again and till now didnt change anyting, i mean didnt forget the layout of apps.
i wanted to share this little unprofessional solution with you =)
if there is a better way i want to learn.
finally i have a question, after updating to 2.3.5, when i tap contacts, it opens slowly, after 1 or 1.5 seconds lag(black screen) it opens. but not always. it happens just sometimes.
do you have the same behaviour?
sory for my english. looking forward to see your answers or comments.

14th post,
see my firs post
I'm really surprised I haven't seen more people complaining about it but I guess most are not running TouchWiz.
To re-explain the problem I'm having..
You arrange all the applications in different panels the way you want (after you hit "applications" not the home screen panels)
After turning the phone off and on again Or plugging it in to the computer via USB and removing it, all the applications are a mess again. Not the way you arranged them and there doesn't seem to be any logic behind it.
It's not just the way they were the last time you turned the phone off or the last time you plugged in the USB cable.
I also thought having folders in an earlier panel may be causing later panels apps to get bumped around but I've tried it with the folders in the last panel and I get the same randomness.

The question: Can I root a phone to try apps without affecting my updated ICS fix from sprint and without changing how my phone looks and feels?
My assumption: When I root it uses a ROM that someone "hacked" and it overwrites my updated ICS update.
The facts: I got the original ICS roll-out from sprint and very recently also the "fix" update to ICS from OTA. I have never rooted a phone and I'm thinking about it because my battery life has gone to hell, and my signal strength is a mess.
I'd also like to get mass storage options back to get compatibility with a usb head unit.

I was waiting to see of anyone else was going to respond but since I'm going to call it a night, I'll throw my 2 cents in, then I'll wait for my change..
I had to ask about the "second" update since the only thing i know is this- The original roll out was paused, then when it started up again, small fixes were noticed. One being the Swype issue. Not big changes according to some.
So to answer your question about rooting to try apps, just use sfhubs one click for ff18. Clear the cache on Swype after that. Then try your apps..
I'd suggest reading up on backing up your data, etc, so when you notice that stock battery life, look and feel and all of that isn't different, and you want to go back, you can.
Or just save all of that trouble and root and flash the stock tweaked ics rom, with a custom kernal, and enjoy a stock, rooted, long lasting daily experience..

For your concerns, you can attempt to address issue by issue.
Sync contacts w google.
Change modems to address the los issues you have.
Use titanium backup for your apps.
Use a custom kernel for your battery life.
And use sfhubs storage mode fix.
Or, sync contacts w google, use tb for your apps and find a great rom that addresses the rest of the issues.
You keep saying something about an update to ics, but the latest ff18 rom builds have all ics and more..
(and of course you can always go back stock of you choose..)

Ok so bear with me here.
If I do the latter as you suggest (and I greatly appreciate your time and answers) would I have to personalize my phone all over again like it was new out of the box or does TB restore my apps like nothing ever happened?
I'm getting really close to pulling the trigger here but it makes me nervous because I do so very much business with my outlook account, GPS, messaging and WIFI.
If I screw it up I'll be dead in the water with no love from our IT department haha.
I come as a PC power user. overclocking, hacking etc. Is TB like when I make a exact image of my operating system and all it's contents and then if something goes wrong I can just blast it to a HDD and it's like nothing ever happened?
I have trouble leaving things be when they "work".
Thanks again.

First off, you're welcome. And if I say something off kilter about what you are wanting to do, believe me there will be people that say so. (Surprisingly, It's a quiet thread)
What you would refer to as an img in PC, Nandroid is what you would call it here. You can find out all about that with a very helpful guide [TUT] What Is Nandroid And How To Use It [Complete Guide] [VeNuM]
Be sure to use it if you're that dependent on your phone for work.
Speaking of which, if you don't have a backup plan for your phone, I'd hold off on puling that trigger until you have read all that you can.
Using Titanium Backup, as with any software, can fail. Be sure to know how to backup and restore and when and what you can restore. Don't go from ICS to GB and try without expecting issues. There are other apps as well, MybackupPro, astro file manager.. Just do your homework.
Having a nandroid is essential for me. If you rename the backup, do NOT put any spaces in the name. It's also a strong suggestion to verify md5 if you plan on moving and storing - Don't delete the original without verifying the copy with md5. Just search for a md5 checker.
If you do decide to flash, good luck. Ton's of smarter people than me here tat can help, just make a backup..
I've been reading my butt off here but I still don't have a grasp of the rooting.
When I root a phone doesn't it overwrite all my stuff? Then how would I be able to use Titanium Back up to back up all my previous stuff?
I bet I'll understand much better once I actually root it but like you said I'm trying to get a grasp of it all before I commit.
Rooting alone, no.
If you use sfhubs ff18, rooted, no data, you will not lose your current setup and data. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=27635571
You'll just be rooted.
For TB I'll refer you to this - http://www.titaniumtrack.com/kb/titanium-backup-kb

Hello.
I have posted this in the forums at Android Central and only got one response. I've had my phone since Feb of this year. Since 11/2 there is major lag. No issues on 11/1. Taps on the home screen are continuously being read as long presses. My lock screen is really laggy, as are home screens and most apps. Bad piggies for whatever reason is working just fine. Most other apps including the keyboard are very laggy. It just seems to be very slow to respond to touch all of a sudden. My phone is rooted stock GB. At AC, I was told an app was hogging RAM. I downloaded Memory Useage from the google play store but it doesn't seem to make a difference. I'm still getting that lady after killing and uninstalling apps. The lag is still there with the native launcher so I really don't think it has anything to do with GO Launcher. I used TiB to revert GOL back to the previous version. I also uninstalled GOLocker as well. I've done a soft reset but it didn't help.
Is there a way to see my Play update history so I can see which apps installed that night? I've always had the occasional lag but it wasn't ever really a big deal. This is greatly interfering with my use of the phone. I am lucky to type a word before the keyboard disappears. Low resources makes sense but I just can't figure out what app is hogging them.
Any help is greatly appreciated. I'm thinking of resting back to unrooted GB to upgrade to stock ICS.
The first app in the my apps list is the most recent one. So start uninstalling from the top.. Now if you had installed an app say 2 months ago, uninstalled it a month ago and then reinstalled it today then it won't show at the top of the list. It will be still at that same spot where it was 2 months ago. So keep in mind if you reinstalled some app.
Also you should uninstall apps from applications in settings so you can clear cache and data for that app. Or you restart after each uninstall.

Thanks but my only options are Sort by Size and Sort Alphabetically. Are you talking about the applications list in Settings? Or is there a better place to uninstall? I know I can go into TiB as well.

This is so frustrating. In the Play Store App, my "Installed" list is alphabetical and the "All" list is listed by install order with the most recent at the top regardless of timestamp of update. I cannot see any option for changing the order. Should I just go by the TiB list? It is showing the apps in order of update and lets me clear cache and uninstall the apps.

Now I have removed all apps updated on 11/2 or overnight from the evening of 11/1. The only one I can't touch is Kies. I have frozen it with TiB but I'm still getting the super heavy lag. What can I do next? Do I need to just reset the whole device now and start from scratch?
This is really frustrating. I love my phone and haven't had it long enough to switch to something else. Are there any tests that I can perform to check on the screen itself?
I have also installed OS Monitor and the top apps using up the CPU are OS Monitor, SYstem, Google Play Movies & TV, Android System, gzip. THe % used varies from 0% up to 26% they may last only a second or two. Is there something wrong with my phone? I feel like I've exhausted finding a resource hog.
If you have a custom recovery installed then do a nandroid backup and flash a fresh install of something to test it. If its not broke in the test then you can restore tour backup and continue to troubleshoot. Honestly though its easy enough to just start fresh. I do it every few days/weeks on a new rom.
Heck at this point flash something ICS or even JB. I can't think of a reason to ever use a GB rom again.

Do you have a JB recommendation? I haven't created a nandroid backup because the only one I am aware of with with CWM and I have been told more than once that it isn't reliable on the E4GT so I just completed removed it from my phone. Are there any other methods for getting a nandroid backup?

Paranoid android 2.50. You can make a nandroid backup from el26 kernel with cwm of an pics rom.

I'm currently using codename, great rom. I've only used my nandroid backups several times but they do work. Always just made my backup in whatever custom recovery I was using at the time. Can't remember what recovery I used on GB. Its been a while. Edit just use the el26 blues mentioned above
When switching between ROMs or experimenting I use SMS backup and restore and call log backup and restore from market. Its nice to have those old texts and call logs sometimes.
I use SMS Backup cuz I want to save my texts but I don't know if I need to save my call log.
Thanks for the recommendation. Paranoid Android looks pretty cool.
My external SD card is safe right? Does it need to be backed up as well?

External SD never gets wiped during a rom flash. Even internal sd card doesn't.
What's your opinion on Triangle away? Is it safe to use on my e4gt? Just in case this doesn't work, I'll need to reset my count.

I have used once when I flashed jb tar and it worked. I prefer mobile Odin over desktop Odin to flash. Mobile Odin means no triangle.

I use triangle away all the time, I never use mobile Odin. I think its more risky, not sure why, its all in my head
Thanks. One more question and hopefully we're done here.
I noticed that on the paranoid Android site, they no longer have OTAs. How do you get updates? Do you have to flash each time?

Do any of you find it odd that bad piggies seems to be immune to this lag issue? I played it on my to work this morning. Other apps get bogged down. Thank you all for your help and advice.

Custom roms typically require manual updates. Very few update automatically and i have never tried paranoid.
I'm not even sure what bad piggies is.
