Is it just me or what? - myTouch 3G Slide Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Memory has dropped to 34mb and I have not added any new apps. But google maps has updated again and that's when I noticed a major drop in system memory. Seems like google is trying to hog the whole phone. Anyone else notice this?

Have you cleared out all your caches?
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide using XDA App

Yes. It is really starting to p me off! There is no room for apps. I guess I'm gonna have to start learning how to pull all the crap off. I can reload the rom if I pull something that messes up right?

Yeah you can, remove apps if your rooted. i recommend root explorer or an equivalent .

Thanks!

do you have a **** ton of text messages?
I had 800+ and once I deleted them I got 14MB of internal storage space back

i have the same issue
mine shows twice and then dissappears
can someone elaborate on the manual method
?

Is the update worth losing the memory for?

FYI, root explorer won't work. You can only remove them via adb while mounted in recovery.
How many apps do you have installed? I have 38 apps installed, easily over 1000 texts, and I've never cleared my cache and I'm still at 68mb internally free.
If you search the General MTS forum, there's a good thread in there on what's safe to remove.

Like 5 apps and not much for txt msgs. It's like something just gradually eats the memory away.

Clearing Cache

Is there a way to clear the cache of all ur apps? I looked it up in the market and an app came up but its said for rooted phones.....is there a way witout rooting my phone?
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide using XDA App
Go to settings then applications then click menu then select size and click on the apps n press clear cache ;]
theres an app on the market called cache cleaner cleans all apps cache and its free but you need root. i dont believe theres any app on the market right now that doesnt require root so either root your phone or manually clean the cache for each individual app one by one.

CacheMate for Root users.
Cache mate is only for people who have root and it doesn't clear your cache it just stores it to the sd card so those without root will have to clear them on an individual basis.

Accounts & sync force closing

So just recently my accounts & sync in my settings started to force close on me. I'm not sure why it's doing this, I only noticed it was like that when my contacts from Google weren't in my contacts list anymore. I know I can fix this by just wiping my phone and reflashing the rom, but I don't really want to lose progress on my games that don't have save files on the SD Card. Do you guys know another work around to get it to work for me? I am running CR's stock OTA update with the add-ons. I am also using the jit tester 2, the one in alpha I guess.
The add on package is what is giving you problems. Take a look at the files it removes, at least one of these (stock.apk) is required for your accounts to sync. It might be worth a try to nandroid backup and reflash the rom without wiping. Alternatively put slide into recovery and adb push the files the add on removed.
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide using XDA App
I don't think I made a nandroid for the rom when I flashed the add ons :/ can you tell me what directory I would push the stock.apk to?
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide using XDA App
/system/app. You will need to determine all of the apk and their associated odex files and push them back via adb while the system is in recovery.

You lost me at odex. Doing a reflash doesn't sound so bad right about now lol

If you have root on both devices, you can simply copy the relevant /data/data/* folder from the source to the destination.
Will it work on the g2 with VISIONary?

Until the android os has some sort of built-in backup system for app and game data (sync to PC or backup to SD), I don't see the point in putting the time and effort into a game like Angry Birds on my phone. Sure, you can use Titanium Backup, but that requires root and it's a pay app.
I've had to swap my G2 twice now due to hardware faults. It's a real pain getting everything back to normal. I have used Titanium Backup before on my N1, but I sometimes got unpredictable side-effects from a restore.

TB breaking apps on Intergration...

Any help here would be appreciated. This happened twice with google maps and once with facebook. Instead of integrating, apps are being removed from phone.
I am on stangs rom the latest official deodexed gingerbread rom...never had this problem before.
Are you restoring data+apps? And if so what Rom did u back them up with?
Sent from my ADR6300 using xda premium
Nah. When I install a new rom (like this one for instance) I only restore user apps and data. I leave all the internal apps alone.
Soo after getting updates for internal apps (like Gmail/Maps/Facebook) I use the intergrate button and then **poof** the apps are removed. Icon still shows up under system/apps in Root Explorer but the app and icon don't show up anymore on phone.
So what do you guys recommend? Should I just do this manually in Root Explorer? How can I integrate on my own to save some space?
Just wanted to bump. I know I can do this the reverse way while rooted. I guess by removing the app and reinstalling again but anyone else have any ideas?
Still getting this problem.
How much free space is is /system? TB may fail on moving if there is not enough space free.

Hmmm I bet you are on to something. Only about 3-4 mb free. Even though I can free up about another 40 mb by deleting an app.disabled folder I created. Thanks man I bet this is why.

Freezing problem

Been having a problem lately with my phone freezing up. Takes some time to unfreeze. Sometimes I have to force reboot it. Im running stock everything with the newest sprint update.

How much free memory do you have?
I average from 1.5 to 2 gb free unless im doing labor intensive stuff

That sounds about right, but what exactly are you doing when the freezing usually occurs? What apps are running in the background while this occurs? If youre not sure, go to Dev Options and check 'Back kills all activities' and see how it operates for a day with that being checked. If that is checked, uncheck it and allow the RAM you have free to be used the way it needs to.
Also, are you Pure Stock or Stock Rooted?
You could also go to Applications Manager> Running, switch to Cached Processes and see if any of those labor intensive activities are showing High(30 +) MBs
I should have been more specific. But I was talking about internal storage.
*flips the table and walks out*
Its generally when im messaging thru the stock app with swype keyboard. The stock keyboard is too small for my fat thumbs.

But you didn't answer the internal memory question. Open MyFiles app and tap the pie chart near top right and read the middle column, Device storage, I think. 32GB capacity; what's available?
Using stock Swype or paid Swype from Play? Too many keyboards shouldn't be an issue but being rooted, I remove unwanted keyboards and stick with modified paid Swype (yes, I paid for it but modify it to get more alternate symbols and add a dedicated number row like the Samsung keyboard does). I think if I were not rooted, I'd disable them if possible if using another. I'm sure you've heard of Swype lag; it should be resolved even in the stock version. I've used both with no issue but didn't have both installed at same time.
When you upgraded to Lollipop, did you factory reset and reinstall apps and updates? Short of that, clearing data and cache for the suspect applications in app manager is the only thing I'd suggest at this point. Another OTA update is expected sooon; if rooted, harder to take OTA.

6.4gb of 32gb
Stock swype from play
Im not rooted and no factory reset or reinstall. The update did its own thing.

Perhaps I tripped up over the definition of Swype. When I say stock, I'm referring to the included version of Swype that Samsung provides. Maybe it updates from Google Play? IDK.
If you're using the paid version of Swype, try disabling the stock version with application manager. It's been too long for me, don't know if that app can be disabled.
But despite the ill communicated Swype versions, I'd say your issue is the fact you haven't factory reset after or before the lollipop OTA. I actually seen that myself because I took the OB7 OTA rather than wait for an Odin tar. The /data file system was mixed Lollipop and KitKat. A factory reset will get the file system correct. Maybe that helps. I can't think of a good application backup that works well for non rooted phones. But I hear this one is good. Backup before you factory reset. Maybe Android M gets some of this right, like full app and data restore and file management coherence between updates.

How much cached data has built up? I had almost three gigs. Went to settings/storage and tapped on cached data to clear it. Helped and I had a little more free memory than you. Worth a shot.

That's true; cache uncontrolled can can get out of hand, especially with browsers and ads. I don't manage mine manually but only have 39MB cache. Rooted has its advantages. I use an app with a lot of white listed apps to avoid bulk cache wiping.

Cached data and downloads is usually my problem. I also use the paid version of Swype and in hangouts it lags or won't pop up until I close and open it again.
