Issue with phone going to sleep? Rom RC1 CM6.. - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I flashed CM6 version RC1 and now my phone wont sleep. Everything in running services is sleeping so doesnt that mean it has to be something in the background? I check the battery stats and the screen bar is full while the others only show a small percent of usage.
Under battery history the major thing seems to be network usage/android system with half a blue bar and then a full red bar. Not sure if that helps.
Running services is 25%
screen on is22%
I am having trouble figuring this out is there a good tool that could offer some guidence or is there a slick way to trouble shoot?
Thanks, Thomas

Are you sure your phone is not sleeping? Press running and what does it say..

Sorry I know its not sleeping i have been monitoring it very closly for the last few hours. CM6 doesnt work like 2.1 it doesnt show up time and down time it just shows one time. So i have been monitoring how long its been on after a reboot and how long it shows its been running and everytime it shows its not sleeping.

Do you have the newest radio?
If so, try changing your network to CDMA using Network in the market. Menu - Set Network - Force Close - Scroll to CDMA Auto PRL - Press Back - Black screen - the phone will come back to life when done.

The usual tweaks area already done but thanks maybe I missed something but I keep going back over things looking to find anything I might have missed and still nothing.
The basics are done though, the phone is already set to auto prl CDMA. Gtalk is off, with no auto sign in. I have the settings all setup the way I would normaly have them set.
Keep them comming maybe I missed something lol.
Thanks, for the help so far.

yuo can try getting SystemPanel. the paid app will let you see history and can show you what apps are running int he background and inactive. It will also let you pull up the top apps using cpu/battery which might help out. its a pretty nice program for the price.
I use it for a lot of troubleshooting and finding battery drain from apps.
EDIT : in CM6 if you go to about phone and then status at the very bottom should show up time

Thank you I will try that. I am really feeling like an idiot here lol. I have been looking at up time thinking it was telling me how long the phone has gone without sleep. Uptime is just how long the phone has been unpluged. With the old 2.1 roms you got two times uptime and wake time or something like that. Is there anyway to check my wake time?
Im gonna dl that ap and check it out thanks.

I am an idiot. It was sleeping and after resetting the battery I think the battery stats where adding to my crazy issue.

Android system - partial wake lock - one solution found

I have my phone running 99.6% of the time in spare parts and it shows android system as the culprit holding a partial wakelock.
so my question is, how do i fix this? i've tried a factory reset three times, am updated to 1.21 ota and have slowly started to reintegrate apps but it always starts again and always after a different app.
i'm getting pretty frustrated anyone got any ideas?
UPDATE In my case it was network time abusing wireless location service that was causing the problem and hence the reason a factory reset didnt solve it, i switched off network time and voila!
just to clarify, no live wallpapers, and phone is in airplane mode to avoid any data usage drainig the battery.
i have got beautiful widgets homescreen small clock and pure cal widget installed at the moment but even when i uninstall them it doesnt fix it, also im running launcher pro 0.4.2 but also had the problem when i reverted to sense.
and i have read every other thread here about battery life that i could find but no-one seems to have this problemo
anyone with any advice on why my phone wont sleep?
A long shot, but go in to Mobile Settings and untick Enable always-on mobile data.

ok cool, giving that i try now but i had been leaving it in airplane mode to try and take the vagaries of data out of the equation.
this started about a week ago and i really noticed it when i was in a 6 hour long meeting and my battery basically draines 60% even though the phone was in airplane mode
ok tried that but with my phone just factory reset, airplane mode and no apps installed other than spare parts it's showing running 94.1 % of the time and all of it is android system.
that cant be right
i have restored data, maybe i shouldnt restore data either but that just seems plain crazy
Re: Android system - partial wake lock
What exact foreground and background processes/services do you have running when this is happening, any idea?
Apps like System Panel can show you them and some useful other details. That is certainly too high.

ok right now there is
com.android.syncml.service
sense
market
messages
people
rss reader
syncml provider
sys panel
touch input
updater
and then a load of inactive cached applications
do you see anything unusual there?
ok so i downloaded system app and killed all apps except excluded and sytem apps and my running usage has gone down, now thats no suprise in and of itself but now i need to see if it stays down.
i've just checked again and the percentage is still going down, so it's either an inactive app which i didnt list ( is that even possible if its inactive) or one of the items i listed above.
has anyone got any thoughts.
What do the logs say upon going to standby? (Use aLogcat to watch/save system log).
I had same problem I tried the turning off network always on to off, didn't change anything. the thing that worked for me was turning off my flickr account!? For some reason it kept my calendar awake so keeping system from sleeping, don't ask me why as I can't figure it out, though since doing this I'm now getting up to 2 days of average use from the battery. Also I've done the usual of reducing the different accounts sync timings etc.
Have you typed *#*#4636#*#* into the phone key pad to look at what is happening? This can give valuable info on what's draining the battery.

I have the same problem as OP since the latest update. The *#*#4636#*#* code is not helping in this case. The partial wake lock is displayed as Android System - which doesn't tell me anything.
I read something about the Calendar issues but I am unable to stop the calendar in running processes.
How did you solve your problem?

Ok i seem to have had some luck since last night though i'm not sure of the exact reason.
i did as th3 said and downloaded system monitor and then killed all background active and inactive tasks and that seems to have solved the problem. I have no idea why that would be the case though and i am watching it carefully to see if it stays fixed.
i dont have a flickr account setup

Djet, I installed alogcat and have found all references to wakelock, rather than post the entire log
D/PowerManagerService( 77): wakelock: PARTIAL_WAKE_LOCK 'NetworkLocation Check Location' activated (minState=0)
D/PowerManagerService( 77): wakelock: PARTIAL_WAKE_LOCK 'NetworkLocation Check Location' activated (minState=0)
D/PowerManagerService( 77): wakelock: PARTIAL_WAKE_LOCK 'keyguardWakeAndHandOff' activated (minState=0)
D/PowerManagerService( 77): wakelock: FULL_WAKE_LOCK 'keyguard'ACQUIRE_CAUSES_WAKEUP activated (minState=3)
there are also some entries in red like this one
E/vold ( 53): Unable to lookup media '/devices/platform/msm_sdcc.1/mmc_host/mmc0/mmc0:0001'
and a load of errors to do with global search etc but this is all pretty much gobbledegook to me, what am i looking for?
thanks
ok so based on that log i have switched of the use wireless networks to find my location (not gps i hardly ever use that anyway) and now the running % is dropping fast.
i will keep you posted as to whether it keeps coming down or not.
it is going to be an enormous bummer if i cant use wireless location, thats one of a smartphones greatest powers, why would this suddenly start happening now ( started about a week before the ota update) and continues even when i factory reset.

I suppose it's not the feature itself guilty but the applications using it. I had the same issue with battery running out because of Location service wake locks. It turned out one of the Locale app plugins was abusing this service. Having it uninstalled battery run became normal.

Yes i know what you mean, how did you go about diagnosing that? also i have done several factory resets and it still happens
Re: Android system - partial wake lock
There are a many app settings that drain battery and the stock setup is nothing I am fond of. Location/locale was one of them for me, calendar, network time and widget/app syncs being the others. A non-stock app causing such problems was NetCounter.
Calendar was fixed by killing it and restarting it. It's a known bug for many.
If many widgets are running sync very often, then you can imagine battery draining fast.

th3 you are legend, it was network time, i switched that off and all is now well in the world. cheers dude
Good find. I had the thing off anyway, but it is good to know.

[Q] Battery starts draining at exactly 5am.

I started using JuicePlotter yesterday, and noticed that at night my battery barely drains, if at all (hooray for setcpu!). Until exactly 5am when it starts draining heavily at a steady rate. I've done all of the obvious stuff (I think), like making sure I have nothing set to begin syncing at that time, but I can't seem to pin it down.
Does anyone know of a way to find out what's turning on at 5am and draining the battery?
Do you have an Exchange sync setup?
If you do you may want to check and see if your Peak times start at 5AM. If so you may want to set it to update less frequently.
Does JuiceDefender run on a schedule and keep 3G off until 5am?
Thanks for the suggestions guys
I have exchange set up, but its set to "as items arrive" for both peak and non-peak hours (which is set to 8am anyway - yeah, being on call 24/7 sucks).
I'm also not using any kind of timing app like juice defender to schedule anything.
One wierd thing I noticed that may be tied to this, is that certain apps like twitdroyd and fb update immediately when I open the apps, even though they're set to refresh manually, and not to update when I open the apps. Still trying to figure that one out.
Night mode is enabled from 2 am to 5 am. Depending on your settings, Data/3G/Wifi are disabled between those times.

He is referring to JuiceDefender, I bet. I would guess a lot of people who use JuicePlotter also use JuiceDefender. It does exactly as he described: turns data off from 2am to 5am. I use it, and it does help. It also keeps data off when the screen is off during the rest of the day, except for a quick check every so often.

rats - I was hoping he was referring to something in regular settings. I'm not using JuiceDefender, or anything similar.
well if you do have it setup for everything to be off between 2 - 5 then wouldn't that make sense that as soon as 5 hit your apps will start syncing even Google apps as they have been trying to sync that whole time and just started queuing up and finally your radios turned back on. I have not used juice yet so i do not know much about it just throwing in some pennies.
One other thing the refresh manually is only for when the app is closed as soon as that app opens its going to sync with its servers. When you set it to manual then that means when you open the app you manually refreshed it and the phone did not do that while idle or you were busy on some other app. Its like twitter for desktops if you set your refresh manually then while the app is open it will not refresh until you hit refresh

One thought: Do you have a good signal in the spot where your phone sits at 5am? A bad signal is the best way to drain a battery fast. A friend's house has an awful Sprint signal, and my battery will drain in four or five hours there, even with no use, whereas I get well over 24 hours with average use in good signal strength areas.
Back when I first got my phone, I used System Panel to figure out what was causing the battery drain. I liked using it so much, I even ended up purchasing it. The history part is what you want, and it will work without paying for a bit, so you can find the problem.

that would make sense if I was running something like that, but I'm not - as a part of my job, I need to be able to reply immediately to specific emails. At any hour. Total PITA, but hell, it's better than not having a job, right? JuicePlotter's pretty neat though - it just sits in the background monitoring your battery levels and graphs them. For example, it was showing an almost horizontal line from when I stopped using the phone the night before until exactly 5am when it started a gradual decline.

Are you sure about this? I mean it makes sense, but I would be willing to swear that back when I was running stock I would open FB or Twitdroyd and it would wait for me to hit refresh before syncing with their servers. Twitdroyd, for example, I would set to keep 80 tweets, and I would check it only occasionally, so I could read those 80 tweets whenever I wanted. Now when I check it, because it syncs immediately, I lose anything older than the most recent 80 tweets. As a workaround, I've increased the number of tweets to keep, but it's still annoying.
ok so hmm what rom are you using. not wanting to bash the dev but could it be that rom?

I actually purchased SystemPanel this morning with the hope that it would help me get to the bottom of this (I had been using the free version for a while, and now I had an excuse to buy it). It shows me history of battery, device usage, and cpu activity, but even if I see that the cpu or the device is being used, I'm still not sure how that's going to help me pinpoint what's going on. First I need to build up some history anyway though.

[Q] Samsung Epic - Battery drain is horrible! How can I fix this.

Please help....
I have read many threads about this, but I don't understand any of them. My battery life is horrible, I am only using it for the occasional phone call, texting and checking my email. It's very frustrating because when I need to use it, the battery is dead (or almost dead and I can't use the camera).
I don't understand all the lingo on here about what version "this" and "that" everyone is using. Downloading certain apps to fix this.....
I'm not very techy and just use my phone for basic things.
PLEASE HELP!!!!
Suggestions:
Turn off bluetooth until you need it, then turn off when done.
Turn off GPS until you need it, then turn off when done.
Turn screen brightness to automatic or lowest setting (your preference).
Turn off 4G receiver if you are out of range or just don't have 4G coverage in your area.
Turn off synchronization if you don't care for email, Facebook, Twitter, etc updates. (Not really necessary if your update interval isn't set for short intervals.)
Utilize Wifi as much as possible, if that is an option available to you. BUT turn it off when you know you will be out of range for a good bit of time.
Toggle Airplane mode after each phone reboot. (Stupid bug)
Utilize the TouchWiz program manager (long press on home screen and under Samsung widgets).
Kill the OmaDrmConfigService process via Settings > Applications > Running Services. (This appears again with each phone reboot, unless you find a process killer application in the market.)
If you use Wifi a good bit, it's a good idea to set your Wifi sleep policy to "Never". You can access this via Settings > Wireless & Networks > Wifi Settings: Press menu and select Advanced > Wifi Sleep Policy. Setting to never will not revert back to 3G when you turn off your phone's display as long as wifi is still turned on and within that connected wifi signal range.
If you still get **** battery life, then you can download Spare Parts or BatteryHistory from the market. BatteryHistory is a ripped out piece from Spare Parts, which is really all you need to diagnose your issue.
OR if you don't want to install anything you can key in via the dialer: *#4636*1111# to get to the same menu that both programs above display. (The menu is labeled Battery History.)
From another battery thread that pertains to the two aforementioned programs:

Did deleting the android folder work or anyone else? I'm trying to see how that can help but if it does good find.
I have no ideawhy but after flashing a few times testing themes on dk28 my battery tanks and my gallery gets slow. The album thumb folder inside there is what fixes the gallery so I usually delete it but I got lazy and deleted my whole folder since it regenerates on boot and my battery came back. Ben deleting it since lol but I flash a lot

Not certain how it helped your battery issue, but good to have that knowledge. I sifted through my folder and only saw cache files for what looked like thumbnails.

Try this:
-Toggle airplane mode every time you reboot. You probably have a "time without signal" of over 50% if you look in settings. Toggling airplane mode resets the radio and so it doesn't keep looking for signal unnecessarily which kills battery
-Gps on doesn't drain battery, only when its being used by an app
-Turn off background data and auto sync. If you don't have facebook/twitter widgets or care about email push notifications then save some power and switch it off.
-Check for apps that aren't letting the phone sleep. Download "spare parts" and it should show you.
-I'm guessing you have the updated Facebook app with chat. I would suggest going offline in chat because it doesn't let the phone sleep and will drain your battery really fast.

[Q] Battery not great

hi. im a brand new rooter. i got a preowned s4 mini last week and decided to root it using a guide here(im very new to all of this) i deleted bloatware and use apps like greenify, setcpu, wakelock detector all to my knowledge have been done right and im still having crap battery times. worse than my 5 year old iphone 4s!
i can post any screenshot of stats upon request but from my new knowledge of all of these apps and rooting, i see nothing out of the ordinary. if im being honest, "battery doctor" seems to be a nusiance to my battery. but it often gives me reminders that my phone is draining quickly with 29 apps open that i cant delete with app master or even see on greenify. some of them are..favourite contacts, active apps manager, s planner widget, csc, remote controls, factory mode, alarm and video player. the rest are the ones above like setcpu, greenify etc.
so im asking..what now? ive seen mentioned that getting rid of touchwiz and installing a new ROM like cyanogenmodgod. but what then?
ive no idea how to understand some of this but im fine with following instructions with technical stuff i.e rooting my phone in the first place.
i really hope i can be helped as im really liking my first android experience bar battery life

ill do that later when ive spare time. ill write a little update for now..
tried CM11, simply did not like the UI, i much prefare the stock s4 mini UI (touchwiz?) so ive reverted back. ill be sure to post screenshots of wakelock, battery screen etc.
my signal is rarely above 2 bars if 2 at all..ive changed the settings from LTE to the one that means 3g...hopefully the more stable 2..sometimes full bars saves battery!
heres screenshots of various things.
notice how battery doctor has many aps as being in the backround even though i greenified them AND turned permissions like "always on" to OFF so there isnt a reason why they should be on.
ok..i cant post links until i reach 10 posts so ill add in a space in the link..

If you go to settings > Battery > Battery graph , does it show the phone actually sleeps? (the "awake" bar)
I attached a screenshot , if the bar is compleatly highlighted , this means the phone does not go in sleep.
If this is not the case , i suspect something is wrong with you battery.

nope..the awake bar does have bits missing (being asleep, right?) i seem to be getting acceptable charge times as of late..some games make the phone very warm and do destroy battery % but so did them games on my iphone 4s. this phone isnt brand new..it is almost new..im "happy" with the battery times now but not so much as i expected better times than my 4s but its about the same at best. i may try an OEM battery someday and see if that gives me even a 10% increase.
any advice on charging? took me about 2.5 hours to fully charge..about 1.5 of them hours, i had the phone turned off..the rest was on airplane mode

That indeed means the phone is sleeping.
What kind of Screen on time are you getting ? do you leave bluetooth / 3G / Wifi on all the time ?
3G and especially 4G is a huge battery killer.
EDIT
About the charging , i generally just charge my phone at night functioning as a clock since the battery lasts me a full day.

i have wifi only on. its on most of the day, i turn it off while i sleep or if im out and about with no hotspots about.
i seen on youtube something about a faster touchwiz thats available here..it apparently helps battery life?
also nova launcher may help with battery life too?

Other launchers probably won't help with battery life.
I'd suggest turning off any radio's you don't use and (off course) keep the brightness low. What kind of screen on time are you getting ? (Settings > battery > screen )

Galaxy s6 bad battery life and a couple more things. Please help!!!

Hello there. Im having some bad times with my new galaxy s6. I bought it from a shop, unlocked, as i noticed it was from sprint cuz its the g920p, which is a sprint variant, and it had on settings some sort of app from sprint. That doesnt matter. My battery life sucks. I have like...4-5 hours of usage, if i use it without a break or something. Also, in settings i dont have the Battery or Battery status section which is kind of annoying cuz i cant see for real what is happening with my battery. I disabled the location, i use my wifi or data and then i close them, i dont let them opened. In my wifi settings i unchecked "always scan for wifi" or something like that. After every reboot i get one more percent of the battery down, and also, after every single reboot, after the samsung logo, "Android updating 1 app out off 1" appears, and then after it "updates" it, its all functioning. Like..i dont get it. What app has to be updated every single time i reboot? Please help me with this...or at least the battery drain problem..
i would start disabling all that bloatware get the easy stuff right in the app draw long press then a small - pop up on the apps that can be removed or disabled then go into applications in settings Menu and disable everything that u dont use most system apps wont let u but after all that and it still drains Then try powersaver mode everything seems to work fine still get texts n calls. Mite need to go to Koop1955s thread Update root restore for all the files to restore/fix that phone here it is link
Oh heres another app that will give battery stats and some of the best info u can find just go to the last few post and see for yourself. Betterbatterstats
