hi. im a brand new rooter. i got a preowned s4 mini last week and decided to root it using a guide here(im very new to all of this) i deleted bloatware and use apps like greenify, setcpu, wakelock detector all to my knowledge have been done right and im still having crap battery times. worse than my 5 year old iphone 4s!
i can post any screenshot of stats upon request but from my new knowledge of all of these apps and rooting, i see nothing out of the ordinary. if im being honest, "battery doctor" seems to be a nusiance to my battery. but it often gives me reminders that my phone is draining quickly with 29 apps open that i cant delete with app master or even see on greenify. some of them are..favourite contacts, active apps manager, s planner widget, csc, remote controls, factory mode, alarm and video player. the rest are the ones above like setcpu, greenify etc.
so im asking..what now? ive seen mentioned that getting rid of touchwiz and installing a new ROM like cyanogenmodgod. but what then?
ive no idea how to understand some of this but im fine with following instructions with technical stuff i.e rooting my phone in the first place.
i really hope i can be helped as im really liking my first android experience bar battery life

Could you post some screenshots of Wakelock detector and some general things like Screen on time etc ? would help us out troubleshooting your problem

ill do that later when ive spare time. ill write a little update for now..
tried CM11, simply did not like the UI, i much prefare the stock s4 mini UI (touchwiz?) so ive reverted back. ill be sure to post screenshots of wakelock, battery screen etc.
my signal is rarely above 2 bars if 2 at all..ive changed the settings from LTE to the one that means 3g...hopefully the more stable 2..sometimes full bars saves battery!
heres screenshots of various things.
notice how battery doctor has many aps as being in the backround even though i greenified them AND turned permissions like "always on" to OFF so there isnt a reason why they should be on.
ok..i cant post links until i reach 10 posts so ill add in a space in the link..

If you go to settings > Battery > Battery graph , does it show the phone actually sleeps? (the "awake" bar)
I attached a screenshot , if the bar is compleatly highlighted , this means the phone does not go in sleep.
If this is not the case , i suspect something is wrong with you battery.

nope..the awake bar does have bits missing (being asleep, right?) i seem to be getting acceptable charge times as of late..some games make the phone very warm and do destroy battery % but so did them games on my iphone 4s. this phone isnt brand new..it is almost new..im "happy" with the battery times now but not so much as i expected better times than my 4s but its about the same at best. i may try an OEM battery someday and see if that gives me even a 10% increase.
any advice on charging? took me about 2.5 hours to fully charge..about 1.5 of them hours, i had the phone turned off..the rest was on airplane mode

That indeed means the phone is sleeping.
What kind of Screen on time are you getting ? do you leave bluetooth / 3G / Wifi on all the time ?
3G and especially 4G is a huge battery killer.
EDIT
About the charging , i generally just charge my phone at night functioning as a clock since the battery lasts me a full day.

i have wifi only on. its on most of the day, i turn it off while i sleep or if im out and about with no hotspots about.
i seen on youtube something about a faster touchwiz thats available here..it apparently helps battery life?
also nova launcher may help with battery life too?

Other launchers probably won't help with battery life.
I'd suggest turning off any radio's you don't use and (off course) keep the brightness low. What kind of screen on time are you getting ? (Settings > battery > screen )

Hey guys, thought it might be a good idea to share with each other what apps/settings are mauling their battery life...
Personally at the advice of beards, I used systempanel app to try and monitor app cpu usage etc.
I was experiencing large battery drain overnight, so I decided to leave it running for 1 night. By the morning I had lost about 30 or 40% of battery and systempanel told me that Fancy Widget was using about 11 or 12% avg of cpu (if I remember correctly).
I removed Fancy Widget, turned off Data (with APNswitch) and also stopped systempanel (which prob contributed some of the usage itself) when I went to sleep the other night and the batt was at 40% usage. In the morning I turned on my phone and was greatly surprised to learn that the phone was STILL AT 40%... didn't even lose 1% wooooot
So.. I'd like to put my suggestions out
Batt hungry apps: FancyWidget (maybe...? but I'm surprised that other people don't seem to have a problem so maybe its my human error?)
Phone settings:
Data:3G data seems to consumes a lot!!!
I suggest leaving on 2G if you want to keep auto syncing apps etc, and swapping to 3G when you really need the speed (browsing/downloading).
If you want to totally maximise battery usage, turn off data completely every time you put the phone on standby, and turn off all autosyncing apps.
I also believe Wifi consumes less battery than 3G usage, although I haven't done any serious testing, I managed to use wifi on and off for about 5 hours at a lanning event and I still had a fair bit of batt left.
Recommended apps:
I recommend APNswitch to turn off data. I like it because you can use it as an app, not just a widget, as I've found all the APN widgets too be ugly. It also uses the notification bar wisely
Other experiences:
According to systempanel, samsung widgets (feed, buddies, daily briefing) all consume very little CPU (less than other widgets in my experience. I've kept them all as they seem beautiful to me
To XDA members, anyone else experience bad batt life with fancy widget?
Please feel free to critisize any of my claims, I hope we can help each other out with sharing battery life tips, good/bad apps etc.
EDIT:
Wallpapers:(thanks gadjet0)
Live wallpapers seem to consume a lot. Also having read discussion about the power consumption of oleds, I put a pure black background on my device. Whether it's actually reducing power or not I have no scientific evidence.
Thanks should pin this!

Have you tried any live wallpaper, I got the feeling that they put a drain on the battery!
Yes, all its true what have writed oswade. I was make this thing with my Galaxy, and battery life have very growing...
Regards
also try tasker, I have set profiles to put phone into airplane mode at night, during day the data is off, but comes on every 15 mins or when the screen is turned on (like juicedefender i think its called) works brilliantly and conserves battery.
I can unlpug phone at 5am and still have around 60% at 9pm with light usage, while before I would get to evening and battery would be close to dead!
Glad that I'm not the only ones.. I suffered quite bad. Full charge ard 6pm..was playing robo zone for an 1hr+. Batt left 50%. Arghh..
Does black or darker background uses more batt?
I'm using beautiful widget.

Couldn't figure that out either... probably need to use a task-killer or reboot.
So what do you recommand (or anybody else) to replace Fancy Widget ?
I don't really want a HTC like Clock but I want a digital clock like this ?
Beautiful Widget for exemple ?
And i don't know why an app which automatically turn on/off the 3G when ur using the brownser/market doesn't exist already ? That will be great !!!
What's wrong with fancywidget? Seems fine on my device.
If using Juicedefender,do I still need Advanced Task Killer?
Then What?
Hi!
We have industry best hardware configuration.
But we
1) can not Use live wallpapers
2) can not Use 3G for many hours
3) can not Use considerable number of applications from the market
4) can not watch two full length movies
5) etc.................
If you want above
1) Purchase additional battery and put in your pocket
2) Power adapter/ Travel adapter always carry with u
If you are roaming for more than six hours, then it's bad.
this is not only for Galaxy S most of the samart phones fall in this.
What can we do????????

Dude, I have a Samsung Galaxy Ace
As soon as I got it I installed fancy widget and some other programs. My phone was lasting only 6 hours. I sync to corporate, gmail, facebook and a few others. At first I thought 'bad phone'. I uninstalled Fancy Widget last night and voila my phone is fine. It'll last a day+ now.
What the hell is wrong with that app?? Why does it need so much compute? Its just a widget that shows time??
I have a question regarding my battery life. Yesterday night at 10:00 pm i played +/- 40 minutes on games like Angry Birds and used my 3G connection for about 10 minutes. My battery dropped from 100% to 61%. When i didnt use my phone (just idle mode) @ 11:46 pm i wanted to check how much battery i had left today in the morning (10:00 am) ..... it whas completely dead 0% .... i have this phone since august but if i knew the battery life whas so crap i would have picked another device.
Is there a way to improve it ??? since i read in diffrent topics people can use their desire for 2 days without a recharge.
- Not rooted

The HTC Desire is a smartphone running powerful mobile OS and a lot of additional gadgets like GPS, ...
So comparing battery life is impossible.
You can get a battery life of a mobile phone/week if you use it like a mobile phone: No GPS, no data, no playing games, no surfing, just occasional talking. So the battery life is normal and good, compared to mobile phones.
But normally you use it like a smartphone, thus you use it daily, play some games, ... which results in a battery life of a few hours (navigation) up to two or three days (moderate use), with an average battery life of a day (heavy use).
However, one thing for sure: Something is wrong with your phone.
This dosen't mean something is broken, rather you use an app/setting, which causes the battery drain, so you did something wrong, you're the failure, not the device!
Playing a game drains the battery fast. The display is on, probably max. brightness and the CPU and GPU is working like hell. It also gets warm, so you can feel the increased power consumption.
In sleep mode however, it should consume much less than it did for you. Maybe 2% each hour.
So to find what app you've installed or what app you keep in the background running, install a program like Android System Info and take a look at the task list, CPU load should be around 10% if you wait a few seconds and do nothing.
Take a look at the running services (android settings, applications, ...) and check if you really need all of them or if an app is active which you don't use. Then don't force close it, only idiots do this, rather open the app and deactivate the service (like automatic updating)
Next option: Test the battery life again. Maybe an app crashed and caused the increased power draw and now everything is working fine again and battery life is normal again. Then it's impossible to find a culprit with Android System Info.
Also tell us what settings you've activated: GPS/Wifi/Data/BT/...
This is happening because, some process not letting your device to sleep..!!
All you need to do is type *#*#4636#*#*
and check the battery history ,you'll get to know which process is using your battery, and remove that application.

Thanks will check it out and see what it does now in idle mode.
Idle mode 01:28 pm starts now, will post results in a few hours.
Edit: It's 02:00 pm here and i already lost 4% battery, its 96% now , i did *#*#4636#*#* and checked battery status and it seems wifi is in full use 99.7%. I will turn this off but what about the 3G connection
Edit2: It's 2:24 pm here and the battery status is 92% now, i reveived +/- 4 emails in that time. I checked the status in battery indicator pro and this is what it says
Android system 37%
Mobile Stand-by 22%
Phone inactive 15%
Wi-Fi 15%
view 11%
nothing else......i am really lost now.
Is my battery damaged/broken ? .... how can i reset/callibrate the battery ? or should i contact the shop where i got this phone from for a new battery ?
don't worry, lots of people are having bad battery lifes, and angry bird drain your battery really quickly, so it is quite normal, especially on AMOLED desires.

PS: After 30 minutes without touching it the battery is still 92%.
you could install setcpu and set profiles to save battry life
Might try that.....but after 1 hour the battery is still 92%.....i guess wifi drained my stuff down all the way as i am pretty sure i turned that thing of last time.
i will do some more tests later....
Edit: After 1 and half hour the battery is still 92%, guess the stock rom isnt that bad .

Stock Rom / Froyo 2.2
The battery drain came from wifi
I wrote HTC about the battery and they just sent me a brand new one So now I have 2 batteries and I think I'm happy DD
You can check your battery usage with a widget called "currentwidget" (search for it on this forum)
Usually on SBY with radio ON my phone drains from 3 to 4 Ma and 2ma in plane mode. (sounds good with a 1400mah battery)
In heavy usage, it can go anything from 150 to 500ma (ie: playing game with wifi ON)!!
For nice graphics, try to install "battery snap" too.
From HTC themself:
“To also help with Battery Life you can do these steps exactly:
1) Turn your device ON and Charge the device for 8 hours or more
2) Unplug the device and Turn the phone OFF and charge for 1 hour
3) Unplug the device Turn ON wait 2 minutes and Turn OFF and charge for another hour Your battery life should almost double, we have tested this on our devices and other agents have seen a major difference as well“

A known problem with the new update of the HTC Desire to Android 2.2 Froyo is battery life. How users have experienced the change is highly variable. Several said that battery life has improved, some even talk about a major improvement. The others have had problems that the phone charges from a fully charged battery several times in one day. If you have experienced such problems, there are measures, some simple, others more complicated and time consuming. Below I list things you can try, the lightest at the top.
# 1 Look what it's drawing power. Go to Settings> About phone> Battery> Battery usage or enter * # * # 4636 # * # * on the keypad and look around a bit. Is there anything that seems abnormal, or any program that seems to be the culprit, uninstall simply the application and see if that helps. While you can uninstall applications you believe is in the background and drag the cream from the phone's battery. Some applications may slip into the "Android System" in your battery history.
# 2 Uninstall system control and task killers. Advanced Task Killer and similar programs do more harm than they help. It is unfortunately only to realize this and stop using them. Android is an OS made for having many applications driving on the background. The operating system puts himself applications you do not use the idle to conserve battery power. Different programs that measure your performance on the phone, for example, Task Panel never sets in idle and therefore system resources continuously. If you have such software installed it may be time to consider uninstalling it. More on why the task killers and Android do not go hand in hand in to read this article by Android developer Dianne Hack Born.
# 3 Clean your home screen. It can be a good idea to try if it helps to clean up your Home screens from various widgets.
# 4 Do a soft reset. Discharge the battery completely (not that the phone is turned off), turn off the phone manually, remove the battery and reinsert it, restart your phone and put it on charge. This may have some effect and provide an improved battery life. Such a restoration known as a soft reset and should be tested before you do a master reset (hard reset).
# 5 Do a "hard reset". Have you done all the methods above are still not noticed any major difference? Then it's time to do a master reset of the OS. HTC have said they for some users might went wrong during the update to Froyo causing poor battery life, and when it is easiest to do a reset to get to grips with the problem. Although Android automatically sync contacts in the "cloud" so it might be a good idea to make a backup of your contacts (Contacts> Menu> Import / Export). Note that when you do a hard reset resets the entire phone, including messages, settings, themes, installed applications, etc. These are not the contents of your SD card. There are two methods to restore your phone, do a google search on "hard reset desire," so there are many simple guides. After restoration, the idea not to install any applications you had installed before. Install the programs one at a time and not too many at once.

Hey everyone, last weekend I unrooted and wiped my phone, went back to factory settings, rerooted and installed CM6.1 RC2. I've been enjoying it so far (because I hate Sense UI) but I've got a couple of questions that need answered. Hopefully you all can help me.
CM6
1. Is there a setting to turn off always-on mobile data? I cannot find it.
2. For some odd reason, I cannot turn on bluetooth. I've not had a problem with turning on bluetooth with any other rom. In fact, I remember testing bluetooth the night I installed CM6. Is this an issue with the phone or the rom?
3. No matter how much I turn off Auto-Sync, it turns back on. What is doing this?
Battery Life
1. On average, I get around 10-14 hours battery life a day, maybe a little more if I barely use my phone all day. I've heard a lot of people say that an ideal battery drain with the screen off should be 1-2%/hour, but mine will drain from 6% to even 10% in 40-50 minutes (EDIT: Currently 75% battery left, unplugged for 2hrs 30min, done nothing but use the browser for 5 minutes, download something, and install it)! I use systempanel and spareparts to monitor which apps could possibly be doing this, but none look like they're eating up too much of the battery. I check Facebook 4-5 times a day, use the browser, and check Gmail. I don't use Google Talk. My screen brightness is around 30-40% and I have underclocked when the screen is off with setcpu. What is draining my battery so fast? It's a shame that there are so many cool things to do with this phone but I can't do them in fear of my battery dying before the end of the day
Sorry, that last question was long, but I did not want 2 separate posts. Thanks guys, I hope you can help!

1. no. you could however turn data roaming off or use a program to accomplish this such as "tasker"
2. what do you mean you cant turn it on? what does it do when you enable it? use the widget in your notification drop down.
3. turn off background data as well and that should fix your problem.
and as for you other question. 10-14hrs is perfectly normal for battery life on cm6.1. and fyi: its RC1. there is no RC2 for 6.1 as of yet

Ah thanks for correcting my mistake, and answering my questions. My battery life isn't terrible per se, but I guess I was asking more on how I could make it better (and if I had a rogue app/other battery eater), especially because I see people claiming anywhere from 20-40 hours with a few tweaks.
And regarding the bluetooth issue, it just won't turn on. The option grays out for a few seconds like it usually does when it's initializing, and then it doesn't turn on. The notification widget method does not work either.
Also, there's no other way to turn off auto-sync? I just think it would be a hassle having to turn background data back on everytime I want to use the market. I use JuiceDefender, too, could there possibly be a conflict between the app and my phone's settings?
Man i'm with you here, I use CM6.1 too and love it but the first 30 minutes i unplug the phone from charging i'm already at like 90% battery =/

I had the same problem with my Bluetooth recently. When I try to search for devices the phone locks up and I have to pull the battery. Wonder if this is a kernel issue. I am on snap

Yep, I'm on Snap too; must be it.
Another thing; I've got a friend on Stock 2.2 Sense (battery sucking widgets filling the home screen, etc) with 100% brightness and mobile data constantly on and he gets better battery life than me (20+ hours!) What is going on!?!?!

I couldn't believe it either, he had 3G on all day and everything and we barely get any signal at all in class. On for almost 8hrs with more than 70% left. I was at about 53%
I have the CDMA Desire. I am running Cyanogen 7 Nightly.
Even on older Cyanogen ROMS (6.1.1) I always had the issue of Android OS taking up my battery. I looked at my phone when i woke up to see it was at 11% even though it was idle all night AND fully charged when i went to sleep. Don't know the problem. Perhaps somebody could point me to a battery efficient kernel? Or help me solve the issue
If you barley use the phone it's logic that the android os will take most of the battery. Do you use taskkillers? If yes, don't.
And about your drain, do you have the wifi sleep policy set to never?
settings-wireless and network-wifi settings-hit menu-advanced-wifi sleep
Task killers? No, they are really more of a myth than anything!
Wifi Sleep Policy is set to when screen turns off.
I also forgot to mention in the first post that it took up 77% of the phone's battery.
I hate to bump, but bump.
I switched launchers to see if that would help, i'll update when i find out
Maybe this?
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=11126
Also, check for programs in the background which are using a lot of CPU (like OS Monitor from the market).
Make sure you wifi sleep policy is set to NEVER! (Under settings > Wireless & Networks > WiFI settings > Advanced
Faulty battery?
one thing i noticed with my own battery drain is that i had my tweetdeck updating every 15mins, prehaps you have things that are sync all the time?
also i saw in a post somewhere in XDA that it is just how the batteries work, the lower battery charge you have the faster it will run out.

Widgets? System info widget literally wasted my battery even when not used. Removed and happy about it. Shame you don't get a refund
Check your widgets in the market if there are users complaining about them.

Cell standby will _always_ use more if the OS is operating normally.

I try to keep my phone from using too much stuff in the background. I have Pulse, Twitter and Google Maps (can't stop it) in the background at all times and can get 2 days usage out of it. Widgets and apps running in the background usually are the culprit but if you haven't got a lot of stuff running in the background then I would say faulty battery.
Been poking around here and reading all the posts that people had mentioning battery life on stock/cm11. Is battery life really that good? I find myself trying everything possible (including hardly using the device, turning brightness all the way down, turning off bluetooth & Dynamic perspective) and I find that my phone is dropping like a brick. I can have the phone lose %s in front of me just having the screen open for a few minutes doing nothing else.
I even have two apps to optimize/kill all other apps and I'm finding that this phone is dying faster than a t-mobile pre paid LG L90 I was using prior. I just don't see how people with stock and all the features on are getting more than 5 hours battery life tops. This phone dies while you use it on the charger, which is a first from any phone I've ever used.
How do your experiences stack up? Do I just have a bad unit? Really considering going to cm11 now (really wanted to like Fire OS).
You must have something wrong with the phone. I have had Samsung S3's and S4's and the Fire is far and away the best I have experienced for battery life. I am getting close on two days on a full charge although I do not use it a great deal for voice calls.

Are you keeping Dynamic perspective off with a low brightness instead of auto? Don't see how two days is possible unless you absolutely never used the device. I can lose like 10% an hour just on the browser reading text sites.
Fire has the best battery life of any android phone I've owned. I'm on fire os with a different launcher and I have dynamic perspective on (not for home screen obviously). I'm also using auto brightness. I'm rooted with gapps installed. I get great standby time and even in use its good. You should get gsam battery monitor and see what's going on, although I think you might have a broke unit.
Here is a picture from Gsam (I don't have my phone rooted). I think this is pretty bad for only 3:28hrs of screen on time and that was with the screen at the lowest brightness, not on auto. For app usage I have 7% coming from a game I was playing, but the rest of the drain is coming from system and kernel. Would really like to see another users stats with similar screen on time, as I'm pretty sure I could completely kill this phone's battery in 4-5 hours just using silk browser on Reddit.

Can you check the kernel wake lock section of the same app?

On the off chance that you or anyone else can help me understand what's going on I ran a ~10% drain test and made a picture including information from WakeLock Detector and GSam. This drain seems very bad considering the screen was only on for a total of 16 minutes and I lost 8% power.

Your phone isn't going into deep sleep. It's hard to determine exactly what's going on there but if you download kernel adiutor (yes, that's the spelling) you'll see its locked at 300mhz most of the time. I know it sounds crazy but have you rebooted? That can often sort out a misbehaving app. Are you rooted? If so deploy greenify.

Do you have any recommended settings for that app? I disabled something that I think is allowing me to enter deep sleep more, but I have to finish testing. Thanks for the help ratbags!
Oh I see what's the wrong.
Battery usage give me a wrong information.
My fire phone lasting about 5hrs turning on screen.
Very very good !!
Thank you.:good::good:

5 hours of "screen on time" is solid, the combined time incl. standby, etc. is of course much longer. He didn't know how to interpret the statistics from the device, it was a misunderstanding.

That kernel app won't help battery life but it will show you how long you spend in deep sleep.
As for greenify, you should greenify all the Google apps. I actually greenify everything except sms app, browser, phone and alarm apps.
Also, this could possibly be some kind of location based frippery. Turn location services off or onto battery saving mode if only temporarily. And turn off auto sync if it's on.
