email smtp - not EVO specific - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My first post (or maybe my second) and I'm probably gonna get crucified for not asking this in the right place....... well anyway.
My internet provider uses the cable modem id to authenticate smtp. So on my phone I can't send emails unless I'm on my home network.
So the question is does anyone know of an smtp server service that I can use to route my outgoing mail through?
Thanks for you help......
Noel

Use your sprint acct smtp or gmails.

What SMTP server are you using?
You should be using the one from your internet provider, which - when
using your mobile phone as internet acces device - is your mobile
operator.

I use my DSL internet provider mail service, It has been working exatly with same settings before, and now i'm able to receive all mails from imap.netikka.net mail server but cannot send email outgoing SMTP server "mail.netikka.fi"
I can send and receive emails with my computer thru DSL normaly so that mail server should be ok. Something has to be wrong in wm6 settings some security problem maby.
The mail server is ok, but quite often one cannot access an smtp server
from outside the providers' network (sometimes access is possible from
outside with a logon and a password). This is a common security measure to
avoid their mailservers being used for spam.
So if you connect via a provider A, you can fetch mail from anywhere, but
you should send mails via the smtp server provider A has (regardless of
where your mail comes from). If you then connect via a provider B, you can
again fetch your mails from anywhere, but you cannot use the smtp server
of provider A; you need the one provider B has.
Try first using the smtp server from your mobile provider, if that doesn't
work it is indeed something in wm6.

Thanks for info, I set now my phone operator outgoing smtp server address and now mails are going out also.
So case closed.

Actually, the smtp stuff gives rise a problem I also want to warn you for... If you connect to multiple networks with your TyTN (e.g. wifi and 3G), you basically would want to be able to change the smtp server to suit your needs (e.g. on wifi you need the smtp server of your dsl provider, on 3G the one of your mobile provider). There is no mechanism foreseen in Messaging to achieve this.
As a workaround, I duplicate my mail accounts, but with different outgoing settings (most just go back 3 days or so): i have for instance "mymailbox (provider one)" and "mymailbox (provider 2)". Depending on the network via which I connect, I need to select the appropriate mailbox before choosing "new" or "reply". This way, the correct smtp server is used when I send a mail. It is not an elegant solution, but I haven't found another way. If you have an smtp server that requires you to log on to send mails, chances are you can access that one from anywhere.

Yes i have now that problem that in 3g network mail goes out but not my DSL wifi but i can live with that. But still it is quite weird that with WM5 my DSL provider smtp server works even 3g and wifi but not with WM6.
If you can log on to the smtp server, it could be possible to use it regardless of your connection.
Perhaps you can test it when you use your laptop to send emails, but connect via your mobile operator to internet. If that works, it ought to work with wm6;
but I doubt it to be possible without logon.

Agreed this is a flaw in WM6, shoul be possible to quickly toggle between different settings for SMTP.
I have the same problem, two years ago this was not an issue I could then use the smtp settings from our domain on phone and in office (dsl), this no longer works even with the DSL connection in the office we have to use smtp of the internet provider.

not sure what you mean. Activesync is tethered connection to your computer.
Do you have an data plan from TMobile? Which one? Do you have sms/mms messaging working.
I wish I could be more helpful. I no longer have it configured on mine . I found it to be way to annoying. If I want to check my email I just go to my account at Comcast.net
I would just call TMobile or go to their website
Yes, I have the data plan, I can send sms, browse internet.
I asked becaue I heard that we can use Activesync to serup email account and receive email wireless. Should I use activesync or messaging to setup corporate email account? Thanks.

T-Mobile Touch Pro 2 and POP3 email

Hello,
I live in New York, and I realize most people use online mail like Gmail and hotmail but I use the POP3 email from my internet provider, RCN.
When I was with AT&T, I had to use a special outgoing SMTP server from AT&T (cwmx.com) otherwise I couldn't send emails. Using my internet provider's SMTP server isn't working. Is there also a special SMTP server to use in T-Mobile to send emails on your phone from your email address?
Any help would be awesome, guys!
Thanks!
P.S.
Why the specific SMTP server?
Clearly the phone can't send emails if you put in your provider's smtp server because you're not connected to your internet provider when sending emails, you're connected to your phone's network.
Have you tried SEVEN ?

N00b question about sending email over wifi

I did search for a similar problem but was not able to find anything specific other than to try using a different server to send.
So, I can't send emails using my pop3 account when connected to wifi, they will come in but not go out.
I'm on telus HSPA in Canada. Anyone have any suggestions? My outgoing email SMTP is using mail.telus.net and 'security type' is set to 'none'.
Can anyone help?
home wifi or any wifi?
Hi thanks. So far home, work and in laws are my saved profiles and it won't send on any of them
I think that has to do with the fact that when you are on wifi you are should be using your isp's smtp. As you can see your outgoing smtp server is mail.telus.net which is fine if you are on 3g because then telus is your isp and you hence need to use their server, but when on wifi you need to use the one of your normal internet provider. I had a similar problem when i connected my laptop on someone else's wifi. (never had a problem on my desire but that is because i only use a gmail account on that, so don't know how to make it so it automatically grabs the right server)
That really depends on whether the ISP for the wifi blocks the port to any other providers smtp server. Most don't any more in the EU. No idea if it is still that antiquated in the US and Canada.
Usually you have to provide login details for the outgoing SMTP connection. Have you done that?

Right...when I try to do that it says my service is not set up for SMTP authentication. If im connected to wifi at work with the corresponding isp and email addy then wifi sending will work.
Very strange...
Like others have said, this is a known issue with some ISPs.
I'm in the UK and my provider has blocked port 25 for security reasons but allow you to use another port in its replacement.

Email Setup Question

So, my girlfriend and I both have the EVO 4G. I'm trying to setup her email for her college-John Jay, and I'm having problems with the outgoing. She called John Jay and they said it shouldn't matter which port we use for the outgoing, however it's not validating. The server is imap.jjay.cuny.edu, the incoming port is 143. To my knowledge I'm thinking that the port 25 for outgoing is restricted... is there anyway to get around this? Thanks!
try 587, that is usually used for encrypted smtp transmission
i did try 587, but that was with the pop... but i will try it later, thanks
update: i tried 587, no go, i think the problem is with the jjay server. they claim is doesn't matter what port we use, but it's not authorizing. the most i can get is the incoming working and no outgoing. of course, no one at john jay knows anything :/
Give port 465 a try too. If helpdesk is telling you port is irrelevant, they're idiots. Proper server and port are needed for functioning email - if either is incorrect, email will fail to send.
Most schools have a web page with outlook or generic pop/imap settings. Btw, do check the pop setting for outbound email. Imap is strictly for inbound, and has no affect on outbound.
ok so, it's not anything with android, it's the school. the server's all messed up and they're not providing any info on what it is. i tried setting up the email on outlook and it was the same thing, so no worries, got the incoming working, that's all that really matters.
Btw, you can use a DIFFERENT outbound server and still have it show your school email address (or whatever you want). Most(all?) smtp servers require authentication if you're not on their network. Once authenticated, it doesn't matter what the sending email address says.
Hey. Do you mind giving me the info for the outgoing server that the only part Im missing?
