Suggest an app that uses LOTS of data - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

As the title says, please give me your favourite apps (preferably free) that absolutely hammer your data plan!

Use AndTorrent app to download torrents.

lol, can't beat that one! Or you could start listening to some shoutcast radio or something, that'll keep the stream going forever (I always use XiaaLive Lite).
But downloading a few GB of data via torrent will do just fine

I need to keep within Vodafone's terms of service, so torrenting is out. Streaming music or tv however is most definitely allowed! What's a good shoutcast radio client?
EDIT: I will try XIAA Live out

last.fm app will do the job ;-)

BBC - Streaming

Hi all,
Just thought I'd fill people in with my experiences with the lovely Touch HD and the BBC. I guess you all already know about the Opera settings edit "sgh-i900" (to get BBC to stream). Ok that’s good, but when I leave the house and try to stream I need Wifi! What a pain in the proverbial!
Anyway, turns out whilst at home and streaming BBC stuff I noticed a file which is held in \windows\opera9\tmpdownload\. Whist the streaming app is running copy the sdp file to your card, then zip it up, turn off wifi and the streaming app. Use winrar on HD to access the zip file (I use winrar as it executes the file immediately). Hey presto! Your chosen BBC content while you're on the move.
BTW, each time you run a sdp file and then close the streaming app the file disappears, hence the zip file to have a backup of your content. This
works with all BBC streaming media. I even use it for the radio as I don’t always get FM signal. Just played a random programme which is the better quality stream (not live) with HSDPA and 2 bars, streamed perfectly.
Attached a few sdp's for you to save a bit of hassle. The n95 one is a watch again so it won't work forever I don't think. They are txt files but when downloaded just change the txt to sdp.
BTW, WMP on HD streams BBC radio too, here are some example url's
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/wm_asx/aod/radio1_hi.asx
http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/meta/tx/nb/live/www17.asx
I searched the forum about this stuff (HD only) and didn't find anything, I hope I haven't repeated something from before!
Cheers,
Flook
Good work! I started a thread a while ago requesting something like this.
See "[REQ] Work Around for BBCi Player - Wifi Only Issue"
Got some interest from people but not from any developers
I am not to bothered now as I have invested in a slingbox but there will be others that be wanting this solution
Thanks Richardirv! Love the sling box solution, my mate went to work in Sweden for a while and he watched sky out there. Brilliant.
It is very good I love it, will be perfect when the mobile phone networks get better HSDPA coverage!!
I hope your solution works well for everyone too.

Home music library on EVO to go?

Is there anyway to have access to the music on your computer hdd with your EVO using 3G or WIFI? 8-32 GB is not enough to store a real music library IMO, and it's an inconvenience to have to constantly swap music in and out. It would be cool if a program would allow you to navigate through your computer's music in a similar way to if it were directly on the MicroSD and if playback to the EVO could be achieved with little or no quality loss.
Does anyone know if this is something that can be currently done or is this even possible at all?
if you have good upload bandwidth at home, you could use orb (not free).
if you happen to have a netgear readynas, there is a new addon that can transcode (audio/video) on the fly and stream directly from your nas.
Personally I just use last.fm to stream (or pandora depending on my mood).
try googling online media library or something. I am sure there is an app that is built for something to that effect. Or depending on how frisky you are, you could build a simple file sharing website w/ password protection.
google bought simplify media awhile back, hopefully they will re-release under 'google media' or something similar for android media streaming.
I have been using g-mote on my EVO and it works pretty well. You have to know your outside IP address and need to forward the ports for g-mote server to your internal IP. It is in beta and it crashes every once in a while but seems to work well for me.
Edit: If you search for gmote on the market, it is called Gmote 2.0 made my Marc Stogaitis & Mimi Sun. It is also a cool way to use your phone to control music and movies on your computer and use your phone as a touchpad for your computer.
I use Orb Live, works great for Audio. I read bad reviews about video streaming but, I don't do that so I don't know.
There's a mac and windows server.
Wow...Orb Live is much better that gmote, just installed. $9.99 on the Market and worth every penny. Is taking a long time to index my 85,000+ songs though.

List of useless Hogwash softwares for WP7

I have noticed many softwares are being released for just the PR point of view, with no actual practical use out from those applications.
Two of them which I found are:
1. Netflix: image quality, impracticality of paying to watch 2 hr long movie on cellphone.
2. Last.fm: You can't scrobble any music played on your cell, be it from zune phone memory or from streaming music from zune ... the only thing that scrobbles is when you use last.fm's own radio stations, which are nothing but a tool to promote artists who pay to get listed on their radio 'suggested tracks'.
3. ... list yours.
netflix is great. Mine looks clear as can be. Great for work breaks or keeping a kid entertained while you are trying to get something done.
Netflix is a bonus. I am sure people had their subscription long before the WP7 phone and they were streaming to their TV. So streaming to the phone is a bonus.
There are a lot of other music apps that are great to use that do not 'promote'. I am sure if Last.fm isn't your thing, you can find a susbstitute.

Any good MP3 apps?

I've got the 3GB data plan from AT&T on my Lumia 900 and on my girlfriend's Lumia 900. She walks about an hour and a half to work and streams all the way there....so far in 7 days she's used about 800MB of data. She's kind of computer illiterate, so I'm looking for a super simple way for her to just get an app and download the songs at home while on WiFi so she's not sending me a super long list of songs to download for her when I get time...and so we can cut back on data usage.
Any such apps? Or maybe even a website she can just use from the phone's browser to download?

Can you download from it or is it just more streaming?
Use Zune desk top to load your music to the phone.
For $8.33 a month($99.99 a year) you can get her a Zune membership and unlimited downloads of music, podcast, videos (music) over WiFi or E/3G/4G/LTE.
I personally love my Zune membership and find it's cost to be completely acceptable for my passion towards music. Smart DJ makes music discovery fun.

I use MetroRadio for streaming and I haven't had any complaints...its just a big data hog and I feel like we may be going over our 3GB plan...

looking for music streaming app that doenst use data?

Ive seen that audiogalaxy is a good app and ive been using googlemusic with good results.
I dont want to take up all my data with music however. Are there any that do not use data? (i know that using wifi will eliminate data on google music)
Ive also read that googlemusic caches your music so that if you play it once it saves it and the data is only used one time, is this true?
Just trying to be fair to my family once we get off of VZWs unlimited data plans. any input welcome and encouraged!
Streaming requires a network connection. Unless you are streaming from your local network over wi-fi.
Either way all non-local streaming apps require data/internet.
So buying a 64GB SD card is your best bet.
Grooveshark anywhere (paid version) has caching.
