Hey everyone,
This is my first post as I'm entirely new to these forums. For the last week I have still been setting up my HTC Evo, and have really enjoyed getting familiar with the new system.
I switched over after being an iPhone user for the last 3 years, and I am glad I made the switch when I did. I absolutely love my phone.
I have done a lot of Googling, and reading on this website, but I was hoping someone could provide some clarity.
My Evo is fully flashed and rooted, and I'm now looking for ROMs. From my understanding, a ROM is flashing like how I put a modchip in my XBOX, which lets me get cool new features, skins, etc.
My concern is I'm reading that a lot of ROMs are missing 4G, or FM radio, etc. I don't want to lose any features. There are some I wouldn't mind losing, but I am an IT Admin so I use pretty much everything.
I am excited for Froyo, and I want to make the best choice. I am a technology buff, I like testing new features. I'd like a ROM that has all the cool stuff, but is stable.
Another issue I haven't been able to solve is Manlla. I'm not getting anywhere on this issue. It seems like I can't find the correct files for my software which is as follows:
Firmware Version: 2.1-update1
Baseband Verson: 1.36.00.04.02
Kernel Version: 2.6.29-a2443432
Build #: 1.32.651.6 CL171253 release-keys
Software: 1.32.651.6
So from what It looks like, is I went from 1.47 to 1.32 when I used the full root method?
Again, my questions were:
1) Which ROM offers many features, stability, but doesn't leave capabilities out?
2) How do I get Manila installed?
I know some ROMs such as EnergyROM have them built in, are there others?
I do plan on being an active members here, and helping others as well. Please be patient while I get in the groove!
Thanks!
phew, there are so many different roms to choose from that the only suggestion I can make is to look at the dev's thread on the rom. The first post should tell you what does and does not work.
Some of the top roms I have heard of is Fresh, Damage Control, and one of the 'baked' roms (baked snack or pastries, can't remember)
You can always flash a stock rooted rom, which will ensure you retain all of the features.
The reason your build went down is because during rooting you have to flash an engineering rom, so that is what brought your version down. Any custom rom you flash will have the newest build incorporated so that is nothing to worry about.
As for manilla, I did a quick google and saw references to HTC Sense but I do not know if thats what you meant by it. If so, then Sense should be on any custom rom that is not AOSP, or a stock rooted rom. If this is not what you meant by manilla then let me know and I am sure I can find the answer for you
You could always flash a newer stock rooted ROM if you want the 1.47 update. Otherwise, there are a couple of new 2.2 ROMs being released right now, and lots of discussions about different ROMs, what they have and what they lack, and how they perform. Head down to the Development forum and you'll get more info. Lots of people gripe about threads being in the wrong forum, so discussion topics go here, questions and requests go in Q&A, and ROM info is in the Development section.

My vote is for all of them. You really need to try the roms yourself. Clockwork and Amon Ra make it easy enough to switch back and forth. Back that nand up
Read, in the development section, the sticky posts at the top of the section. They should be of some assistance in getting you more up to speed. Don't ask people to make up your mind for you, but you could list important things you're looking for and if other members of the forum have any suggestions.
I may be wrong, so don't take this at gospel, but I think you might need a couple more hardware flash updates to being you up to current. I know there was a radio and 4g flash update here a few weeks back. That's the ones I'm talking about. I just recently tried out calklin's (probably spelled his nick wrong, sorry) stock rooted rom based on the newest update of the 1.47 one. Sorry I'm being so vague, I'm doing this from memory. I have CRS, can't remember ****!
Anyways, that stock rooted rom was a nice one, imo. It seemed to behave itself quite well and not give me any snafus to speak of. I was impressed with it's stability and yet had the advantage of having root. You gotta crawl before walking, so this is my suggestion for a good rom to start with and start learning the world of android, imo.
Sorry. I know I tend to ramble. It's my over-compensation for being so quiet in real life.

I used those and have had no problems. I like/use clockworkmod recovery. Search rom manager in the market. That's probably the easiest way to flash a recovery, I think...

I recommend Backed Snacks 9.7 or DamageControl 3.2.3. Fresh is the most popular rom, but I think it is vastly overrated.

Why do you think that?
I also recommend Baked Snack. Just checked my battery time yesterday and after 14 hours off charger I still had 76% battery left. Damage is another great one that I have used. A few mire features over baked, but not as good on battery. I had good luck on Fresh too, but switched to based and have never looked back.
Stay away from froyo roms for now. No 4g, BT broken on some, intermittent exchange support, and other issues make it not stable enough for everyday yet. And while it is fast, I do not see enough of an improvement to lose the stability and features of the 2.1 eclair roms.
Most of all, try them and have fun doing it. I have been at this for a month now, and I am enjoying everyday of it!

Manila allows new themes for HTC Sense, which is something I really wanted to do. I jailbreak my iPhone mainly for the reason of custom themes.
The thing is from what I've read, it appears as if it doesn't support my software? I'm not entirely sure.
As far as capabilities, I'm not sure what I'm looking for. I have read the threads and forums, but it seems to be overwhelming so I was trying to get some advice to see which ones I should pay more attention to. A friend sent a link earlier, and it helped clarify what exactly the ROMs are - I'm just concerned about functionality.
I don't want to flash the rom and lose wifi, or 4g, etc. As far as additional capabilities, I don't know what I would utilize. Battery performance of course, but mainly I want custom themes lol.

Hey im new to the android and just got the evo 4g couple weeks ago...i rooted it using unrevoked3 and dont know exactly wat imsupposed to do or wat i can do with itand how...i have read about it and wat i can do but i get confused with all the files and codes...I would ask a friend but not one of my friends have an android or at least rooted one so if anyone can help at all id appreciate it thanks.
Welcome to the family.
I would start off by browsing around the Evo specific forums, there's alot of good information contained there in regards to what you can do with your newly rooted superphone.
If you have specific questions, there's a good chance that someone else has asked the same thing. Before you start any threads asking questions, use the search function and see if the topic has already been covered elsewhere. Otherwise, you'll get flamed.
Personally, I've installed the Fresh Evo 3.5.0.1 ROM on my Evo, with the MattedBlues theme on top and currently using LauncherPro instead of the stock HTC Sense. Also, I'm using a custom kernel. I've found that setup gives a great compromise between performance and battery life.
Good luck!
So I'm thinking of looking into making a custom ROM for my Epic, using EB13 as the base. I know there are some resources/links for older 2.1-based ROM's, but I'm assuming things are different with EB13/2.2 and was wondering if there are any good places to read/review? I know this has been discussed before, but searching the forums yields far too many results that don't really apply...again, I'm just looking for information that I can read and use, not someone to explain it for me on here. Teach a man to fish and all that jazz...thanx in advance!
Forgot to subscribe to this post...
so i was successful in rooting my evo with unrevoked and was wondering what I should do next. I know I should make a backup. That is done via recovery correct? It is called a nandroid correct (my old phone used .tar files to make backups in recovery) I was also hoping to gain some insight as to what things such as roms, radios/kernels(?) and mods some people use and how to go about flashing those things in recovery. Sorry to be so noobish (we all were once), I am just seeking knowledge. Any and all help is greatly appreciated
I would look here:

If you look at some of the stickies in the Q&A and Development forums they should help answer some questions you have... Congrats on rooting your phone!

welcome to the community!
ROMs are the Read Only Memory, or the system, of the phone. with root, you can change it. devs here have made some insane roms. may i reccomend synergy? sense 2.1/3.0 gingerbread combo. just make sure to wipe data and partition sdcard first.
kernels are the bond between hardware and software. there are currently none for sense gingerbread roms becasue htc hasn't released the source yet. froyo and aosp are wide open tho.
radios are, well, the software for the radios.
the link fergie gave you should tell you a lot.
feel free to contact me or anyone else here if you have any more questions.
damn odd future is good.
Thanks for not flaming the noob guys. I will read these and keep you in mind if I should require any help. I think I'm getting the hang of things... Thanks again!

Yea dkdude doesn't bite...much [kidding]
But yea, that link should be helpful, and I still recommend the setup I gave you in your other thread.
Word of advice, I'm on the latest PRI, but if you have bad battery life, PRI&NV 1.77 [need to be consistent] work wonders for people.

Great Recomendations guys! And as stated from above, everyones taste is different as I like Stock Rooted roms best...not sure why but just my taste! Welcome my friend, if you need anything, just holler at us...good luck!
I am trying to get over my noobness too but I have had good luck with Calkulin's EviO 2 Series. I have tried a lot of roms but I always come back to Calks roms.
Check my sig, everything that I use is linked in there! Welcome to the EVO forum!

Thanks for all of the recommendations! I'll be doing more reading on these roms tonight. I need root access so should I stay away from everything that says gingerbread since we don't officially have gingerbread. Everything I've read says no root for gingerbread, am I understanding correctly. Thanks for the support, I'm sure its helping more than just me.

lol close but not quite. if you are not yet rooted, but have gignerbread on your phone, you can't be rooted. if you are already rooted, flash any gingerbread rom you like!
You can pretty much flash whatever you want. I would go through a few different ROM's to see which you like the most. Some people love the plain and fast speeds of Cyanogen, others love HTC Sense. It's all preference.
Be sure everything you flash is compatible with the other though. Kernels especially. You'll find yourself really lost if you try to flash the wrong kernel and send your phone into boot loops for 30 minutes.
Okay, so if I have root I won't lose root if I flash one of the gingerbread roms. Got it. I think I want speed and responsiveness (this phone stock is blazing fast compared to my intercept). This is the first phone I've had with sense and I really like it. I think I'll look for a rom with sense. I do have access to 4g and don't want to lose that capability so I need to stick with sense 1.0 to avoid any problems right. You folks have been most helpful and I appreciate all of the input that had been given. Definitely learning a lot. Sorry for all the questions, I promise I'll stop soon.

Synergy doesn't fit blazing fast, but it is more advanced/more features sense 2.1/3.0 gingerbread combo. Great rom. Seriously. 4g too because it's based off evo shift.
Cm7 (cyanogen mod 7) is crazy fast, no sense, very customizable, 4g. used to be my best rom before synergy. Literally gets better every day with the nightly releases.
You don't need to stick with sense 1 for 4g, but any sense 1 rom definitely has it.
And again, no problem. I have answers as long as you have questions/thanks in a day (bad joke)

Is synergy slower our faster then stock? And would using an overclocked kernel make a difference in the speed?
CM7... 2.2 with the stock launcher from android right (looks wise) if I understand correctly.
Is there a notable difference in the phone's performance between the two? Thx
Sent from my Rooted Evo 4g.
Overclocking makes a noticeable difference in the speed of your phone, but it also kills the battery faster. Also if you like CM7 I recommend trying out Deck. Same basic setup just a little better battery life. I can get around 35 hours out of mine with casual usage on a stock battery.

Upgrading my girlfriends evo tonight with latest and greatest. She was currently running cm7. I want a latest updated ROM, however the video recorder and MMS need to work. I see the the ffc and 4g is common not working which is OK.
Can someone also please suggest a kernel to match up with this. I prefer aosp but willing to try a modified sense 3.0+ ROM.
Thanks for the help! I have a toro nexus and do not view the evo fourm much!

I see that some ROMs are jb based but have issues. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Hmmm, so instead of using your time to give me a suggestion, u have to troll the thread instead. Thunbs up to u buddy.
Let me clarify. I know where to find the ROMs, kernels, themes etc. I know there are many choices when it comes to roms (aosp, sense, miui etc). I am not looking for some to hold my hand and explain to me the differences, because truth is that I probably have tried many if not all of them on my nexus. However the situation I am in is that my girl friends evos is outdated running a stable version of cm7 and timemat kernel and is starting to act up. I was thinking of just reflashing cm7 with a fresh start, however gingerbread is very outdated.
So because this is not my phone, I do not have the time to test ROM/kernel combos like I do on my nexus. That is why I am simply asking for suggestions from my fellow xda members.
I am looking for a aosp jelly bean ROM (if not ICS). I need this ROM to be stable (FFC and 4g borked not a big deal) but must have MMS and video recording. From what I can tell, these are the most common issues.
So please give me some suggestions of something I can flash on her phone without biting off my head. I would greatly appreciate it.
I was also curious about theatest and greatest kernel since timat is way outdated, however I will save that for a further question because trollers get mad.
Posts like this are against the "rules" because it could cause issues between devs or members trying to say who is better or what not.
Your best bet is to use search or go read op's of the 10 or so ICS roms.

I would suggest that you try them and make up your own mind on what you consider stable and usable. Everyone has their own opinions.
I would also suggest that you read the rules and realize that these threads are not allowed based on the reasons made above.
