[Q] New Evo 4g and Android user - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

Hey im new to the android and just got the evo 4g couple weeks ago...i rooted it using unrevoked3 and dont know exactly wat imsupposed to do or wat i can do with itand how...i have read about it and wat i can do but i get confused with all the files and codes...I would ask a friend but not one of my friends have an android or at least rooted one so if anyone can help at all id appreciate it thanks.

Welcome to the family.
I would start off by browsing around the Evo specific forums, there's alot of good information contained there in regards to what you can do with your newly rooted superphone.
If you have specific questions, there's a good chance that someone else has asked the same thing. Before you start any threads asking questions, use the search function and see if the topic has already been covered elsewhere. Otherwise, you'll get flamed.
Personally, I've installed the Fresh Evo 3.5.0.1 ROM on my Evo, with the MattedBlues theme on top and currently using LauncherPro instead of the stock HTC Sense. Also, I'm using a custom kernel. I've found that setup gives a great compromise between performance and battery life.
Good luck!

[Q] Hello! New To Android! Wanna Help?

Hello everyone! I'm pretty new with android phones. Until about 4 months ago, I still had a Motorola Razor. I went and bought the LG Optimus M (by Metro PCS) in December, fell in love with androids, and upgraded to the Evo 4G. I love this phone so much!!!
I'm decent with electronics, but I won't mess with my phone too much because it's unknown territory. I rooted my Optimus only to delete bloatware. I won't root my Evo only because I really don't need to (not much bloatware , plus, there's more internal space on this phone). I already can tether and I like Sense, so I personally don't see the need for it (for me, not saying you shouldn't root; again, I'm new to this stuff).
Landing the plane:
What are some fun and interesting things I can do with this phone? What are some cool apps?
BTW, a little off topic, I have the app TV Shows HD. Why did that get taken off of the market?
Thanks guys for dealing with this newbie!
Well unless you root your phone there really isn't much else you can do with it besides download apps and play games. The best apps require root though, so even that has its limitations. The Evo is quite hard to brick, so it would be worth it to root. You can have Sense and have it be even faster with Mikfroyo or some of the other custom roms out there.

Hmm, okay. Well, can you do me a favor? Can you please (if and when you have time) to send me a link to wherever it is I have to go to root my phone along with information about the root, how to root and all of that fun stuff?
Again, I don't know much. I love this phone and where I live I have 4G nearly everywhere I go. I would love to make this phone even cooler!
Here is a link to a sticky in the development section which has links to pretty much everything you need to root your phone. Just read up on it and try to get as much information as possible. After you root it you can load custom roms, kernels and themes to your phone as well as back it up, restore it from a backup and many more goodies. I suggest reading all over this Evo forum here at XDA about rooting. Everything you need to know and everything you need to do it are right here. Read about all the different Roms and what they have and don't have and decide which will be best for you. Get started here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=701245
If 4G is important to you make sure that 4G is working in the Rom before flashing. It is on AOSP Roms now like CM7. You can stick with stock Sprint and still be rooted too if you really like it. Many devs have taken stock Sprint Rom and modified it, making it faster with less bloat and just plain better. My favorite Sense Rom was Mikfroyo, but I am a dedicated CM7 user now.
Thanks! I really appreciate it!

in one of the subforums.. in evo ...
there is a long ass thread of recommended apps...
I agree man. If you aren't new to rooting, then definitely give it a go on the EVO. Just do your homework and research well before you start, you'll be fine.
The evo has excellent dev support, there are some really fantastic roms to choose from, beauty of rooting ... you're choice never has to be final. There are also some excellent people making excellent themes.. definitely fun to change it up every once in a while.
You can also improve performance, speed, battery life and add new features with root. You will not be disappointed.
Just be sure to at least hit the Thanks button if you use someones work, it's important for these guys to know they're appreciated.
I just rooted for the first time very recently (~2 days) and I found the following posts extremely helpful and, in combination, to provide a fully comprehensive guide on how to root, what to expect, how to avoid doing things wrong, how to backup, how to restore, how to flash ROMs and kernels and other add-ons, et cetera:

Additionally, as others have stated, do read up on the EVO forums here and read up as much as you can on rooting and ROMs and kernels and such. Hope I helped.
Thanks guys! I can't believe their is a forum filed with really cool and helpful people! Thank you all!

Idk if this is still relevant but there WERE several hw versions that required different rooting methods, be careful with that. Maybe they all have a unified rooting method now, I don't pay any attention to that stuff now that I have a custom recovery.

thats all been ironed out. as long as it's an up to date root method, they all work on any hardware or hboot version.
Wow! I'm on other forums for comic books and action figures (yeah, I'm a freaking nerd) and ask a lot of questions and NO ONE responds to me this clearly and this much. This was first thread as well as my first post. This forum is great! Thank you everybody! I will look to root my phone this weekend with a friend of mine who is pretty phone savvy. I will let you guys know how it goes. Again, thank you all so much!

HTC Evo 4g

Hello guys and thanks for the wonderful forum dedicated to Android. Is amazing I am newbie on the smart phones arena but I have good understanding of computer and stuff
I have read several threads in order to gather all info before posting. I think I have learned somewhat what I need but I would like confirmation of the steps I must follow.
I have an HTC Evo 4g from Sprint not in use that I would like to connect to my MetroPCS account.
I have rooted the phone using the Unrevoke3. I take is NAND flashed already.
Now reading this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=795182&page=110 Is my understanding I need follow this prep topic http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=8395950#post8395950 and then jump into the Metrodroid 2.2 ?
After that what ROM do I need? What kernel? Then after that I must add the ESN to Metro ?
If this procedure is correct please let me know if not I will love to have some guidance I think I am close to complete the task.
Thanks again
Pifive
I personally have no idea. I know metro can flash a cdma over to their network but as far as a rom to use with it, i'm at a loss.
Hello just giving a small bump see what directions should I take or what I posted above is in the correct order of what I should follow?
Help appreciated.
I, too, would like to assist, but I don't know anything about MetroPCS or setting up the EVO to work with it. Sorry.

[Q] New To HTC EVO 4G HELP?

Hello, my name is Zach I just joined his site in behalf of my HTC EVO 4G that I've just ordered. I should be getting it tomorrow or Monday I'm not quite sure. I hope you android savvy people could help me out with rootin my EVO or of I should wait?
I want to get to Linux and coding and ROMs I currently own a IPod touch 3rd generation. I've used almost every single Jailbreak. But it just seems to simple.
So I ordered a new phone because I wanted to explore the whole android part. I done some very sophisticated things with coding making servers Etc. But this looks pretty difficult on rooting my EVO. I read many posts on here on what Roms are out and stuff.
I read that some increase battery life or even increase camera resolution. So here's where I get to my question. I know you may of heard a nooby question like this a million times but, " What ROM should I get that would improve speed on my evo, improve screen resolution and camera resolution, and could also use wifi tether. And also does t deactivate the cameras?" and I also want to be able to change the theme of the evo if you can do that.
I also have Android version 2.3.3 if that makes any difference..
Thanks!
ZACH
Hopefully you can answer my question. Pm me an answer or email me at

Nitrous ROM
You have got to try Nitrous ROM by raafaell before you settle on a selection. I was a flash-oholic for a while after I rooted. Until I found Nitrous. I also did not want a bunch of themed stuff, just gets to be too much. 4G does work...where you can get it. Super smooth, darker blue tones throughout, all your standard mods (battery, transitions) too if you want to metamorph that stuff.
It will certainly be worth your time to check it out I have continued to try other ROMs because there are some really talented devs out there making some great work but I always go home to Nitrous.
Go here, give him a thanks too!

Hi guys, I'm having a little confusion and i need a little help
I just purchased an Evo Design 4G for Boost mobile, Where can i find a write up to root it on OS X Mountain Lion.
Also how would i go about installing rom, is it still considered a normal Evo under the forums as in can i install the normal EVO 4G Roms on this?
Thanks any help would be appreciated
Just saw that the normal 4G ons won't work on the design. Now i just need the Root Write up for OSX
Id look for the design forums as its nothing like our evo 4g

I think might work the same way as windows. you just need to know how to move around directories such as folders. Good Luck. I would highly recommend using a friends computer or use a Virtual Machine.
Man what's up with all the evo design questions lately? Someone needs to make these guys their own subforum so maybe they can get some development going on and have a place to hang out, poor confused souls. They bought HTCs red headed step child and can't even find a place to talk about it anyways Google is your friend one of the other forums has a guide to root the design but as far as I know there's precisely 0 custom roms for it. Once you root it tho you could use uot theme kitchen online to make youself a theme to change the look, or read up on doing it the old fashioned manual way of decompiling and recompiling the systemui and framework apks
We are legion, for we are many.

Okay, so i did what's best  and sold the Evo design on Ebay and just purchased and Evo 3D (For Virgin Mobile but Sprint Branded)
How do i go about THAT one? Do i install normal Rom's on it like a regular Evo 3D?
Sorry for all the questions guys, I'm always pretty talented (have been messing/flashing etc etc phones since back to the iDen days) but these offloaded, extra stock, second hand company misfits always confuse me because of the low level of development for them. God i miss my Nexuses already >_<

[Q] School project for EVO (backtrack)

Ok so this is my first "Noob" post, I watched the video it was funny, so like the video said I search the website for my topic, I searched the EVO forum.
Ok so here is the story, today I bought a brand new Galaxy SII, on the Tmobile network. I don't really plan on doing anything with it at the moment. What I'm looking to do is a project for school with my old EVO.
Step 1: I would like to return my EVO to it's virgin state, flash a new ROM that would get rid of all the crap, or a way to simply clean out everything on there now. Right now I believe it is running a version of gingerbread CM7, I didn't do it, but I know how to flash a ROM on to the phone. Forum post, or websites, or anything to expidite this process would be great.
Step 2: is I would like to put a copy of backtrack 5 on the phone as a tool for a couple classes I'll be taking next year. My question is from what I've read so far backtrack on android is unstable, any forums or info about this would be great. This was my first place I went to look for information I plan on to keep investigating.
Thanks in advance for any help.
If you want to keep root access but a stock feel, flash a Sense 1.0 ROM such as The Classic found in the original development section for Evo 4G.
If you want it completely stock like out the box, read up here for guides on how to unroot and return to stock stock

Thanks for the help on the stock rom, I searched for about five more minutes last night before going to bed. I found a site called skidrowhacker.com an article lead me back here. A whole topic on installing backtrack. There seems to be a problem with using HTC and CM7, I'll have to do some more exploring
Have you tried Complete Linux Installer?
