I was just wondering, because this phone has a great camera, and I've seen people do some wonderful things with it, in terms of extra uses.
So, has there been any kind of drivers made that will hook this up to the computer as USB webcam? I'd love that.
you mean rather than using the computer that the camera is already attached to?
like what Fring was doing with Skype or the preloaded application called QIK?

What are you talking about? I just meant using the camera as a simple plug and play webcam for a computer.
Its possible. When I installed CM6, and plugged the phone into my computer for the first time since the update, then it asked to install camera drivers to use it as a webcam, working with my camera software n all.

Nice. Do you know if there are links to those drivers then?
Also, you don't have to open any apps on the phone? You simply open the camera and it's connected as a webcam?
Bump...I tried searching for this and couldn't find anything on the subject other than this thread.
Is there any way to use the evo as a Plug and play usb camera?
Theres an apk usb webcam that does require a computer side program to be installed. But it worked fine with msn and skype. I remember googling android phone as usb as a webcam

ok, thanks. I'll start searching there.

Hi Guys,
I would like to use my Arthemis as a webcam on my pc. I use linux as the primary os. Could you please explain if this is possible?
Thanks
Lhrt
for windows there is the program called webcamera plus from ateksoft (no freeware)
this program works with a app on the phone and a driver on the pc, maybe it is possible to get this driver working on linux? (i'm not a linux guy )
Problem is these require Activesync installed on the pc for the cam to work and Activesync will not work on Linux.
Googled my way into this thread, and I have the same problem.
I also got an idea here. Couldn't the phone simply stream the video over the network or bluetooth? In this case all it would take is basically a "http v4l" driver.
What do you think?

Yeah, I think that will do the job. Do know any app stream the cam to bluetooth or wifi?

wow that's awesome! I gotta try the webcam one. hopefully a microphone already exists!
found with this software, supposively you can use phone as microphone (as well as web camera). I will try out when I get home today.
So I'm attempting to root the Continuum, but for some reason the phone won't effectively connect to Windows 7. For example, when I hook the phone up to my Samsung i7 laptop, all the phone does is charge. It doesn't even ask me if I would like to use usb storage or anything. The computer also doesn't recognize the device. Any ideas? Thanks!
A couple questions first:
- Did you install the Continuum drivers?
- Does your phone bring up the USB connection in the status bar?
- Does it bring up the Verizon VCast website on connection?

1. I likely did not install the Continuum drivers, and I have no clue where to get them. I'm assuming Samsung's website, but it's a bit hard to figure out and navigate...
2. My phone does not bring up the USB connection in the status bar.
3. When I go to the browser, it brings up the Verizon website with news, etc.
It should probably be stated as well that this phone is not activated. I am using it on wifi only for the time being because I traded it with a friend for another phone.
Alright, so I've figured it out. Strangely enough, I was just using a generic USB to microUSB cable, and I actually needed to use a Samsung cable. Weird, right?

So...now that I'm rooted, how in the world do I install a custom rom? I saw that there's a ClockworkMod Recovery out, but what does "Odin" mean? I'm coming from an LG Optimus V and have extensive experience rooting and installing custom roms and recoveries, but I've never heard of that before. Thanks again!
First, we dont have much for custom roms on this phone. The couple we do have contain fairly well written "how-to's" for them.
Second, if you are not sure, do some research and find out as many answers with the vast pool of knowlendge at your fingertips (the interwebs) as you can. There has already been a swarm of questions asked, and I am sure the answers may already be there for you.
I am waiting for the update and Froyo roms to come out before I bother with custom roms, but I am not holding my breath for that. I will probably be on my next Android phone before I will bother. Modding it up with Widgetlocker, ADW Launcher, and some other goodies at the moment to tide me over.
I had this same problem today. USB mass storage wasn't working, adb wasn't working. I wasn't using the samsung cable, but I can't see how that would make a difference, as the cable I was using has worked for literally a couple dozen different phones from different manufacturers - including other samsungs. I had the samsung drivers installed.
The owner claims that only media sync works on his computer as well, and that usb mass storage has never worked. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?
i am also getting this problem. as far as i know i am still using the samsung cable, as normal micro-usb cables dont fit in the continuums port. ill look for another one, but this is quite odd. what i have done (all windows 7 64 bit):
drivers uninstalled
drivers installed
lagfix on
lag fix off
factory reset (within adrenalyne's rom)
i am going to try to transfer the stock rom via bluetooth and see if that works
edit: turns out that isnt possible without odi recognizing the device, which it doesnt (not even in download mode). this is very peculiar
some more information: nothing even shows up in device manager. no unknown devices, nothing. the phone charges, but thats it. i might go to the verizon store and see if i can get another cable
My guess is because you are using a 64 bit version of windows..

I use win7 x64 with odin3v1.3 and it always detects.... I have odin on pc screen with files loaded then I pull bat hold the DownVol button and plug in usb
EDIT: I also have 'galaxy s x64 drivers'...I found em on net sumwhere?

Why would that matter at all?
The 64bit version of Windows 7 is notorious for not being compatible with a lot of devices. There just arent any 64bit drivers. If you dont understand how to run your software in the proper compatibility mode you will run into problems. I used the x64 version of Win7 for about 12 seconds after I realized my ancient usb optical mouse didnt work lol.
My advice, try running the Samsung driver installer in compatibility mode and see if that doesnt help.

Compatibility mode won't do anything in the case of drivers. I'm not sure what your issue is though as all of my Samsung phones have been picked up fine from within Windows 7 x64. Is the phone picked up on any non-Windows 7 computer? Have you checked in Device Manager to see if it just needs installed?
its the cable. i took mine to the verizon store, they tested it, and gave me a new one for free. works perfectly now
Excellent, problem solved!
So it turns out a factory reset fixed it. Using a moto cable. So that's definitely not the issue. Flashing froyo now. Thanks!
I have encountered that a few times also. Its weird cuz when I plugged the usb into ac charger it almost immediately asks if I want to mount sd for data transfer. 20 mins later I unplug usb from unit and plugit into my win7 pc and nothin? So plugged back into ac unit and it recognize....so I mounted and it didn't know what to do lol. I then plugged back intopc...waited...changed orientation and 'Boom' pc sees it...in fact I change orientation whenever it seems to hang and seems to work....
sent from my XDA phone - its more than a continuum
I should also note that I have never used a samsung cable and every usb micro I've used (moto, kodak,BB,Lg) has fit and worked. But I have noticed some usb related quirks since froyo update like no lock screen after charging till I push home button, inaccurate batt icon (goes from 3/4 to 1/4 in like 10 mins but overall batt life is same as before)...
On an unrelated note I also can't get v6supercharger to work...?

Hi, first off, I haven't ever needed to post much here before but I love to read all the stuff available here at this site. Top notch man!
Anyway, I have a question that I cannot seem to find an answer to, and have tried numerous search terms to no avail.
Is there a way where I can hook up my s3 to my PC and be able to see the text messaging interface on the PC as well as use the keyboard on the PC to interact with them?
The PC is running WIn XP SP3 and I also have a laptop that runs Win 7.
After hours of texting, this would be much more comfortable on the eyes, and using the full sized keyboard on my PC would mean less typo corrections due to striking the wrong letters. If anyone has a solution for this, or can suggest an app that does this, please respond.
Thanks in advance.
Yesterday I saw an app on market for that .
Search text from pc or text from tablet. There are bunch off apps.

Thanks!, Not exactly what I was looking for but a good alternative. The ultimate would be to have the GS 3 connected via the micro USB and then see the messaging GUI as seen on my phone on my PC screen while being able to use my PC keyboard for interaction. I am guessing this doesn't really exist as of yet.

Actually I saw some pics of my friend whose usb connector has a female usb port at the other end which has a usb mouse connected, and it works. You should try to look for that connector and try your keyboard. :cyclops:
Not sure if I understand your question exactly but you might want to try Kies Air. It's either through the browser or it comes as a little standalone application when you download Kies.
I'm using MySms and it works great. I can text from my tablet, my PC (browser or app), and everything syncs and backs up to the cloud. You'd need to install their app on your phone so it can intercept your texts and send them to the cloud. The only thing is that MMS is funky, so I still use the AOSP messenger to download and upload them.
Use AirDroid.
Does SMS, app installs, file transfers, and more through Wi-Fi or data connection

Nice find! Didn't come across this before I posted in this thread back in February. Checking it out now.
I have a Tab 3 (8.0) with android 4.2.2. Can I connect via OTG cable my Nikon D200 camera to the tablet so I can view a picture shortly after exposure. I tried just making the connection and the tablet does not "see" the camera's CF card as an additional storage or hard drive. By the way, this procedure does work on my computer using Windows Explorer. I read somewhere that android 4.3 update will allow this should it ever become available. Any ideas on how I might be able to accomplish this? Thank you all.

IF you can set your camera to a mode that it looks like a storage device for your computer, then it should work fine as a storage device ONLY with the tablet and OTG. IF it needs a special driver to work on the PC, then then Android will not recognize it.

Thank you, DigitalMD,
I will have to check into that. I know when I first connected the camera to the PC it did load a driver of some description but I don't know what. Until Samsung decides to grace us all with 4.3.2, perhaps I would be better off using my 7" net book instead of the tablet. Too bad but thank you again for your rapid and helpful response.

Are you trying to achieve control or just file transfer? If you are trying to control the camera during shooting or view when in shooting mode you will need an app for Nikon control. When you connect a new device to a windows PC, it will search an online database of drivers and download a new driver if needed. Android does not work like that, for OTG there is a very limited set of devices it can recognize mainly , storage, mouse, keyboard
You might try DSLR.Dashboard or similar apps.
