Hi All,
Probably a stupid question, but...
I'm on Orange (UK), if I root my phone with unrevoked, am I likely to still get the FroYo OTA update, or will I have to flash with a ROM from the net somewhere? And if I do get the OTA update will I have to root the phone again?
My main need for root ATM is to get rid of all the junk demos that are clogging up the phones memory.

So you've installed the OTA update. Now you've got software version 1.47.651.1. You've probably attempted to restore to factory using the RUU exe file and you're getting some kind of version error and can't get it back to stock. You've tried to root, but that won't work either.
Well, you're up the creek without a paddle. As of right now, there is no way to restore factory settings, and there is no way to root the OTA update to 1.47.651.1.
If you've installed the HACKED OTA update from the developers forum, you can disregard this post as you have a ROOTED version of the OTA update. But if like a lot of people you either A) purchased a phone with the OTA pre-installed or B) Installed the OTA when Sprints little app popped up asking you "Hey, there's an update, do you want to install it?"
For now, just wait. They're working on it. And by "they" I mean the bright minds of the developers of these great forums, even some not-so-bright minds are lending a hand however they can
In the mean time, check out this thread if you want to see how the progress is coming.
bump..since people are still asking this question. Any chance for a sticky?
By the question you can tell that i'm rather inexperienced at this, but a buddy of mine(who has a Droid on VZW) and i were debating whether or not doing an OTA update after you root would cause you to loose your ability to root forever.
I guess it's different on both devices, but he contends that he could unroot his droid, which is running a custom 2.2 ROM, install an OTA update, decide he doesn't like it, then just go back to a 2.1 RUU from VZW or Motorola, and then re-root.
Everything i have read here about the EVO indicates that if i am already rooted, and i accept an OTA update, then i will never be able to root again. Does never, really mean never? Or is it just mean that i won't be able to root using the current methods to root the phone?
What if i had never rooted and then accepted the OTA 2.2 from sprint that may be coming this week, would i then be able to root?
What exactly does the update do to remove the ability to get /root access to the phone? Something with the bootloader, HBOOT, or what?
Thanks for the information. Hopefully, this will settle this question for my friend and I.
Chris
OTA updates typically break any existing root methods, and disable any current root access.
Some OTA's also update the phone in a manner which prevents older official roms (that have working roots) from being reinstalled.
At that point, you have an updated rom with known roots removed, that can't be rolled back, so the only option is to wait until another root exploit is found and released. Which may or may not happen depending on the device and whoever is working on it.
Hope that helps.
You can take and accept as many updates as you want....you just have to modify that update by replacing the new hboot with the engineering one.....that way you can freely flash zip files
HTC is tricksy and they dont let you roll back after the OTA. Motorolla may not have this so your friend may in fact be able to roll back to 2.1 (however he may be misinformed as well).
To root basically they find a bug to exploit that allows us to gain access as a root user. when the OTA updates come out 99% of the time they will fix this bug. HTCat least blocks roll backs so now you are on a new version of the software that you can not go backwards and the bug to root is no longer there.
While there are normally other bugs that can be exploited to get root it is possible that there isnt one or that if there is no one can find it. if they cant find it then it could remove your ability to root permanently.

while true accepting an OTA will not give you the chance to do this for most.
ok, that explains things a little better. thanks.
I'm new to all of this as well. My EVO has already been updated OTA by a Sprint employee while I was purchasing the phone. From what I've read it looks like I'm SOL until someone cracks 2.2. One quick question though... How long did it take people to be able to root the first software on the EVO's?
hi. i perma-rooted my phone and then got the OTA update. since im not sure whether i want to do the OTA (people reported their phone being sluggish afterwards) i would like it to stop bugging me about updating. is there a way to do it? i have looked everywhere on the phone, but couldn't find a setting for that.
thnx in advance.
also, if i do decide to do the OTA, would i have to re-root the phone?
thx
I'm a bit torn on this as well. Just recently rooted my phone before getting the announcement on my phone that the update is available. However, after actually trying it, it stops at the very beginning and Clockworks is telling me that some signature couldn't be validated and it interrupted the installation of the update.
No harm came to my phone and it's still in the same state as it was before attempting to apply the OTA update.
Would I need to do the round-about way by downloading and installing it another method?
I'm interested in this as well. I have a second G2 arriving for a family friend. Its totally unlocked so I will most likely apply the update and then root the phone. Is it the consensus opinion that future updates after flashing with clockwork will just fail at some signature validation after rooting and S=OFF? I'm curious about future updates from HTC/Tmo and how this will work as well. I'm also assuming that applying the existing OTA and then rooting is the best way to go.
BTW, I'm truly enjoying this phone now. Thanks to the general, themes/apps, and QA forums sections!
Just to update, I went ahead and applied the OTA update. The only reason why mine couldn't update properly is because I had uninstalled Google Goggles, as it runs an app check. You WILL lose your root but still have S-OFF. I followed this guide step-by-step and I was able to get root again. As far as it being sluggish, there's no performance loss.
Right so Im on orange and theres an OTA update but Im rooted and on 2.3.3 (?) from build 3.0.xxxx to 4.0.xxxx (Im assuming as thats what it is, as it is on my sim unlocked phone) although I use both the newer sim free phone isnt rooted** (it was then I trimmed teh bloatware then unrooted for a repair at Sony) but I couldnt reroot after OTA update... I use this phone daily (the Orange handset) which is rooted but I havent updated as I use root features all the time and dont know if id loose root access.. Will I?
Theres an answer to this on every page of this fourm.
Please read the forum rules.
yeah, im sure it does
You dont lose root when OTA'ing even if it did just use superoneclick
The trick to keeping root is by pulling the battery out when the update is 75% complete.
You can try miracle grow, i hear its pretty good for roots

1) Thanks I might do it..
2) For the other guy who was trolling.. Yeah.
3) 75%? Sounds rather brick-happy to me?
Hi
I'm currently on 4.03. (1.29.707.11) It is stock as I got it from the shop.
The new update 2.17.707.3 which also updates to 4.04 is showing as available to download.
I will want to root this phone later (but not yet) is it safe for me to update or will I lose the ability to root this phone?
I did search, but found some conflicting answers, any help would be cool.
Thanks in advance.
I updated to 2.17.707.3 and still able to root.
Just run the whole process of BL unlock and rooting again.
Yeah , you can still root after you update . No worries
