customers phone bricked after OTA update? might have fixed? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

a guy came in today to my store with a bricked evo. he was holding off on the update because he heard there was a chance for it to brick his phone. he was at a party, and someone accepted the update, and now he is stuck in a permanent loop..
while the phone was off, i held the power and vol down button, did a clear storage a few times, and now it boots fine. will it revert back to the rebooting stage, or do you think it is ok?

Is this a joke?
Stock phone, stock OTA update.. maybe this question should be directed to Sprint Tech Support??
I don't know, just an idea..

Why would a sprint employee post on a development site about a warrentee problem?

Because he know that his internal support can't answer his question.

internal support sucks..
anyways, you guys didnt hear about the sprint 1.47.651.1 update bricking phones?? i didnt know if anyone here had an unofficial fix for it. i cleared the storage a few times, and now it works... it keeps asking me to download the oem1.32.651.6 OTA update, but then says its corrupted. everything else seems to work.
figured you guys would know more than anyone on any type of fix. i didnt know my questions deserved some rude answers.. i was just trying to help out the guy since we cant get the phones in stock for another week or so. guess thats what i get for trying to be a sprint employee that actually tries to help a customer.

As long as you follow the instructions I don't see any harm running the 1.47 ruu, just to know he has a clean install of the official 1.47 release.
Also, as far as I know there is no way at this point for the guy to revert back to an earlier sw version
Look HERE for the stock ruu's

Don't take it so personal man. That's the irony, a Sprint employee coming to a dev community to seek assistance on behalf of a customer running and having trouble with stock Sprint software.
Sprint really should build a bridge to the dev community. We COULD have a very symbiotic relationship, but I am all too familiar with bullsheet corporate prerogatives.

i completely agree.. i mean i have to get all of my answers from the internet..(especially xda), mainly because sprint tech sucks. their official forum for tech sucks as well. this is the first place i come for answers...
so for the ruu.. thanks! i usually use windows mobile, but does this ruu work the same on android? i just open it up, and run it?

I have zero experience with WinMo.
Plug your phone into the computer via usb, run the ruu.exe and follow the directions
If you're on a laptop make sure it's NOT set to sleep. Don't use the PC for ANYTHING else while the ruu is running. As long as the pc doesn't lose power and the phone doesn't lose power during the update then everything should run fine.
I ran that ruu on my last evo before I returned it for warranty replacement, the ruu took no more than 10-15 minutes from start to finish.

ok, cool.. sounds exactly like winmo.. thanks! im going to try it out as soon as its done downloading

Total Noob here, need some help!

Hi guys, I am brand new so bear with me. I JUST got my EVO today, and it came with the upgrated .6 software. After 2 hours of trying, I finally figured out that the software prevents you of rooting your phone.
So I guess what I need to do is roll back to a different version. I've read some threads about it, and I am feeling a bit confused. Most of the threads assume common knowledge, and that is something I just dont have yet. Could someone post a step by step walkthrough on how to get my phone back to a state that I can root it? Or maybe its just easier to just wait till someone figures out a way to root the phone using the .6 software? Any help would be appreciated, cause Im sure as hell not going to pay Sprint 30 bux a month for tethering....

You need to get back to the release version of the software, ends in .1. Since the version you are using is newer (.6) the system is rejecting the flash.
This thread has the version of the software the evo was released with. It's an .exe file so you just save it somewhere on your computer and double click.

Yea, I dont fully understand what step 2 means. So I get the .exe first? then what? Also what does "go into your shell" mean? I'm sure I'm making it more complicated than it really is.
I had .6 on mine and used biles guide and it worked fine. It's in the development section. That may help
I just went and looked (to make sure I wasn't crazy) and it does work with .6

Telus Desire ROM Needed ASAP.

Hi. I recently rooted and installed a WWE "sensefroyo" rom off the internet.
And I just figured out (since a couple of hours) that my speaker isn't working AT ALL.
Before, it worked when you left the battery out for a minute and put it back in. it worked flawlessly. But after a while it'd go back to being messed up.
Now its screwed. and wont work at all.
I didnt realise I needed to get it replaced till now.
I really need the Telus Desire rom asap. As I just emailed them about it, and most likely need to get it replaced/fixed. And I dont know much about Telus, if you lose warranty privileges if you root/custom ROM it.
Unless I can tell them that I installed the official 2.2 ROM (dont know if it needs root) off those .exe files (the RUU_Signed) kind. (They didn't work for me. So i rooted using recovery)
Or if you can link me to one where I can find a rom that does not require rooting, and has an .exe file and a copy of a .zip kind.
I wrote a lot here, and its all over the place.
Right now. Either link me to the Telus Desire rom. or one where I can flash without rooting.
I am going to unroot as soon as I get one of those two things^
Thanks. I just hope you guys know what kind of freaky situation I am in.
Where did you buy it, and how long has it been since you bought it?
Depending on those factors, you may not need to worry too much.
I had it activated on a 3 year contract almost a week ago(Not even a week)
What do you mean by I will not have to worry about these things?
Is Telus a carrier that is more on the 'chill' side of things?
EDIT - So I just got off the phone with Telus.
The representative told me if I installed something that Telus did not release. That basically voids my warranty. So now I really need to get back exactly as it was before.
Can someone please help me out here?
I need to go to a dealer soon to get it replaced.
I am pretty sure I can unroot it myself with no issues I guess.
I really need something that matches with the same stats as a Telus Desire.
You should probably try starting over.
If your rom is still rooted, get ROM Manager and install clockworkmod.
You can install something stable like opendesire and wipe data/cache.
You should be fine, unless you really have some unusual desire to be on Telus' rom.
I was wondering if someone can post what their 'software version' looked like on a Telus Desire
Maybe then I can try to get the same radio and 'stats' as a factory device.
I got on a rep and they also said that the worst thing that can happen is your device will be sent back.
They even said that some people wont even notice the software change and stuff.
If at the end I cant get a Telus rom. I would LOVE a link to an Eclair build rom. Possibly one that is an official.
Didn't you nandroid backup prior to moving to froyo?
From what I understand you can restore from that.

I actually have NO idea what nandroid was.
I just followed instructions off a tut on xda.
So I cant seem to find factory eclair roms.
Now I read around a little bit more.
And just feel completely stupid.
Please. Someone. A factory Eclair build.
start by getting clockworkmod installed.
Without knowing what state your device is in, it's tough to help you.
but with clockworkmod recovery going, you will easily be able to switch between roms.
Honestly you couldn't have bought it that long ago, just return it to the store, the guys don't even know how to check.

If I were you, I would go back to the store you got it from, with your recipt and contract. You have 14 days to return any phone. That's how I got my desire, I returned a Hero. Make sure you take everythign back you got, charger, phones, etc. Tell them waiting to get a band new phone fixed is a waste of your time, and you want to exchange the phone right away.
So long as you have a sense UI ROM running, I doubt they will know you have rooted the phone. The guys where I bought the phone didn't know too much about it.
If you managed to get a tech support guy to tell you they might not notice, you clearly have the power to get what you need from people. Be forceful if you have to, within 2 weeks they should just give you a brand new phone. After 14days though, your gonna have to live with no speaker, hope it's actually a software issue(doesn't sould like it if even stock it was failing), or send it back and hope they don't miss it. To the best of my knowledge there are no Telus official roms to be found, but there are many official roms from other places. As long as your background doesn't say VodaPhone or something, how will they know?

Telus has 30 day DOA over the counter exchange.
YAh but he made the mistake of telling them e rooted and flashed it (why on earth would any one do that i dont know)
So they have flagged that IMEI in the system as void.
Your best bet is to try doing a wipe and flashing back to the telus 2.1 rom and radio, you will, the recovery is gone though as we dont hava ruu.
Actually. I didnt. I went straight for asking the question off a residential phone that uses Rogers. So they don't know who I was or any account related things.
The first time I called though, I told them that the speaker wasnt working and I wanted it replaced.
So no my IMEI is not flagged, guarantee you that part.
I will try using the OpenDesire 3.5.0 with "clear/wire cache"
This might work for you and i think its your best bet.

Go to the above thread, follow the instructions and make a gold card.
then go to the following thread, download official froyo rom and flash it. It looks almost the same as the original rom.

I cant seem to do the goldcard thing.
I am using the official 2.2 at the moment.
It does look the same as 2.1 Telus itself.
What does it mean over here?
# Ensure you have unzipped the SDK, then open a command prompt to the extract location. Change to the 'tools directory.
# Type
Code:
adb shell cat /sys/class/mmc_host/mmc1/mmc1:*/cid

I am done making the GoldCard. What does it even do though?
It has something to do with switching to the factory rom..
Now. I have issues with the RUU. It does not wait long enough for the phone to be in bootloader.
EDIT - Is there any way I can "remove" or uninstall the Superuser Permissions app and the "Wi-Fi Hotspot" app? To make it appear even more legitimate.

I packed up the telus stock rom from a nandroid dump you can try it.
http://www.mightyrom.com/mrx/MRX/Bravo/Stock/Telus_HTC_Desire_Stock_2.1_NoRADIO.zip
Hey I needed to unroot my phone too and I tried a bunch of things then I was following procedures to root my phone again because I tried installing the Rom that was posted by the person that posted before me and I messed up and got lots of errors when I got the phone started and had to force close a bunch of things constantly. Anyways I followed step 3 of the tut for rooting TELUS desires on this forum site and when it restarted I got my stock TELUS Rom back unrooted. This is the step I followed
3. Go to HBOOT, this is done by shutting down your phone and powering on the device while holding the Power button down and pushing Volume down at the same time, once HBOOT is loaded do a wipe (Clear Storage). You can navigate the menus by using the volume rocker and the Power button to select your option.
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7818278 is the link to the tut I was following.
I dunno how it worked but it did, I got my stock TELUS Rom by doing this. Maybe I got lucky and maybe you might too. Oh and just for your info, the tut I used to root my desire initially was this one forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=750888. Good luck

[Q] Intentional Brick?

I'm asking on behalf of a friend of mine who doesnt actually have a computer so he cant post here himself to ask. I'm a vibrant/N1/G1 user myself, so i'm familiar with the aspects here: he has a slide, has the split-screen/ribbon problem on opening/closing the keyboard. He managed to get a warranty replacement from TMO, but he's super paranoid about having to pay the damages fee because he has CM loaded on it instead of the stock firmware.
Bottom line, he wants to brick it just to be sure before he sends it back (he already has the replacement phone). What is the simplest way (that I could explain to him over the phone) to hard brick the phone?
Quick and dirty is all I really need to help him get the job done, all help much appreciated!
If he can brick it, then he can flash the factory ROM that is available to bring it back to unrooted stated. Why not just do that?
-sigh- I guess he can just try to follow the S-OFF instructions to where it says not 2 power off, take out battery- disconnect phone... do the oppsite of what it says not to do? Just saying though... why not just do what Fermunky said?

Problem is that he lives in virginia and I live in colorado. I rooted and customized his phone when I was out there visiting because he's completely inept at this kind of stuff, so I was just looking for a simpler solution than to try and walk him through a reflash over the phone. Plus, apparently what he told the TMO reps was that he got an OTA update and it bricked him, which is the only way (he said) that they'd do a warranty exchange.
Well, I guess your short answer is No, there is no "quick" way. Whether you try to brick it or not, either way will require some attempt at flashing "something", but to just do it in a completely wrong way. Maybe by connecting to a PC and using clever ADB/Shell commands could also do it, but not entirely sure.
Couldn't you flash the radio for say, a Droid X or any CDMA radio?
I know you can brick CDMA phones by flashing GSM radios.
And yay Colorado ;D
I'm going to have to close this as it's discussing warranty fraud.

Referb came with 2.3.3 (4.22.651.2) and 1.90_003 PRI.... WTF?

So a bit of background first...
Been with sprint a couple months now and had data issues since day 1 (between 7 and 15 kB/s at home)home is worse but it generally sucked everywhere. I waited a few weeks to root while trying to resolve, but as it was not being fixed (and I was told ota would fix issues as it was radoi software in my area) I went with Kindom as soon as V dropped it. (rocks BTW I flashed a handful of others but always went back to it)
OTA dropped and I tried V's updated and of course it didnt improve speeds in fact they got slower... Called sprint back and went through another 3-4 calls before they sent me back to store for a full software check and breakdown of my phone. At that point I put myself back to s-on and stock for the visit (glad I did as they checked bootloader)
I was told at that point that they could do nothing as it was a evo issue (wtf) so called retention and was sent a airwave (not using it as I pay for data so I ant using my isp for that) and then a few calls later they finally send me a phone through advanced exchange. (supposedly new)
Sorry for the long backstory but now to the point...
I was told when I called Ret. that she would give me a 200 credit, but then came back and was told I didnt have enough support tickets filed to do so, and my only option was to try a new phone. Got the phone planning to take pics and vids of speedtest to send back to verify it is not a issue with my specific phone (had 3 friends with evos that have same issues, but epic blows away our speed in my house... found that hard to believe when I first saw it)
Phone came in and its refurb. On top of that it is on the GB update, but has a PRI of 1.90_003. To me that didnt seem right as every evo I have seen OTA or rooted OTA had the 2.15 so has anyone else seen this?
I plan on calling sprint as it was supposed to be new, not refurb, but want to make sure that this isnt something I just dont know about (doubtful... seems almost like a previously rooted with s-on?) so I can limit my time on phone and have a good stance to argue... Spent 6 hours on the phone with them already this week and dont want anymore than I have to.
Hmm interesting situation i am not expert on sprint by any means but try to keep up with my phone. a good question to ask sprint or if anyone else knows is ... what is sprints policy on updating phone when they are "refurbished"? I'd assume that if it meets the req to be refurbished they most likely updated it to gingerbread before reboxing. I guess thats a thought sorry i can't help with ur data issues but good luck
Sorry I should have shortened it down to not confuse...
Isuue is not the GB, but the PRI that came with the GB as it is not the correct PRI for that version...
1.90_003 vs 2.15_003 (what it should be)
I dont even want to touch the phone and then when it gets sent back have issues with them saying I rooted it, as there is no way to flash to a correct PRI that I know of at this time..
Edit: Or they may in fact be shipping with that version. Just hoping for others response and experience as it seemed fishy.
have u tried downgrading to 1.77 as well ?
its a wake issue fix for some sense gb roms out there but once again not specific to your problem
Had an AE replacement done recently, picked up 3 days ago. I received a new unit with GB and the 2.15_003 PRI.
Cannot downgrade, upgrade, anything... As stated this is a refurb phone that just came in. It is on the 4.22 so as far as I know there is no way to flash anything...
Its not rooted, though may be a previously rooted phone...
Basically has anyone seen a NON-ROOTED phone come with GB and 1.90 PRI
Edit: Ty jadigy that was more of the answer I was looking for

AFAIK there is not... hence my issue
After a couple hours on the phone with sprint (and a couple drinks after to make up for it) I was told it was a rooted device... I may have pointed them in that direction to get a replacement though. That said I also asked them if they were hiring as the first 6 people I talked to either did not know what a PRI was or simply did not know how to find out what was shipped with the 4.22 update.
I must say walking each one through the process only to be told they had no Idea and I finally asked for a store appointment. (hopefully a bit more luck there)
The general consensus seemed to be I should check to see if it said 2.3 for the android version and if it said anything but that (even 2.3.3 LOL) it was either a fake or rooted phone.
That said sprint has issues with their CS to say the least and I am thinking of starting a poll/ballot (probably not the right word... did I say a few drinks... I meant meant a few during and a few after) the devs/members here to work for sprint
sorry for cutting in..i just posted without reading this first, sry for that, but i am on the same pri,and it wont let me flash as well.1.90 003,this sucks

I called them last night too. Everytime I would say PRI they would say PRL, I finally explained the technical difference to the guy on the phone. Long story short he claimed their demo device was 1.90. Were you able to have them admit was version was the latest?
Is there a problem with having the 1.90 PRI or something?
Did you try the complete wipe with MSL and or other reset method that was used in the past to update the PRI. The real questions is why does it matter, but give it a shot.
To do a complete wipe, you will need your MSL code. Call sprint and they can give it to you.
Type in ##786# into the dialer, hit menu and chose reset and punch in your MSL. Your phone will clear out all data and settings except for your SD card. It will then reboot and do hands free activation, check for a PRL and firmware update. Somewhere in there you should get a newer PRI.
You can check your PRI version in About Phone under Software Information. If you don't succeed at first, keep trying...and trying...and trying.
Restoring your nandroid backup will not overwrite the new PRI, so you can get your phone back to the just the way you like it.
I'm not sure if there is a difference or just a placebo. Web pages seem to load faster. Some pre and post speed tests might have been helpful but I didn't have the foresight to do that.
Edit:
You may be able do the same thing without wiping your phone. Not sure if the wiping is a necessary part or what yet.
Steps:
Dial ##3282#
Enter Edit Mode
Enter your MSL
Select Data Profile
Menu
Restore
Let Phone Reboot, and Wait and the Hands Free Activation will Start.
Repeat until you have an updated PRI.

If I was rooted I could do that... I do not know my MSL code as it requires root access to gain. Unless there is a new root method to 2.3.3 that I am not aware of.. that will not work for us.

Also my speeds are consistently below 250 kbps since having my old one replaced.

If I was rooted I could do that... I do not know my MSL code as it requires root access to gain. Unless there is a new root method to 2.3.3 that I am not aware of.. that will not work for us.

With a post like that you should not care what PRI you have. You simply read a post and see that it says call "Sprint" You would need root to use an MSL reader from the market, but I don't believe this was ever mentioned. To do a full reset with the ## codes and the MSL you would not need ROOT.
Simply put if you are inquiring about the PRI or looking for a root method for an OTA 2.3.3 you must have not have used the search button.

Did you read any of this thread before making your post? I really don't care what PRI I have, I was merely commenting on a post of someone else who also just got a refurb like myself with the older PRI version that should have been updated when the EVO software was updated to 4.22.651.2. I then proceeded to ask what the disadvantage was about having a 1.90_003 PRI, which no one responded to. I could care less if I root my phone or not, but the instructions you provided clearly indicated root was required considering it says to do a nandroid backup. I understand that sometimes Sprint will give you the MSL code, but in my case so far they have not been willing to do so. I would like to have the most recent version of whatever is available for my phone. Thanks.

If they did not supply it to you then you went around it the wrong way. Try, "Mr. Sprint agent I recently updated to the OTA 2.3 and have been experiencing some issues. I believe that I may be able to correct them myself with a full reset. I have done some of the software resets in the OS itself by going to settings/SD & phone storage/ Factory data reset. And I am still not grabbing a good signal. I have updated my profile and PRL in the System updates but think I should do a full reset using the # codes. The only problem is I need my MSL. Would you be able to supply this for me so I can manually reset and program my phone? This will hopefully resolve my issues and complete all my needs for this phone call."

I can see your confusion with referencing a "Nandroid" and thinking this means you have to be Rooted. You can do all of the # codes without being Rooted. You need Root for a "Nandroid", you are correct. I am throwing out all of the actions in one step so this could apply to a rooted or non rooted users in some fashion. I usually always supply too much information rather than too little, so again I hope that clears up the confusions.
I myself am currently stuck on 2.3.3 build 4.24.651.1 and am waiting for what everyone else is that is stock.

depends on what he's wanting to do..if he's rooted trying to go stock or keep froyo with root, also, if he's stock GB and wants to go back to froyo, won't happen, hBoot versions different and will pop up with a message saying the update is too new or something like that.
so a little info on his part will help us out by helping him out!

Sorry, just so frustrated getting out of the latest. 2.3.3 / 4.24.651.1 was a new device and came preinstalled and updated. Been trying again today unsuccessfully, I feel so out of place with the only one in here unrooted?? LOL
Anyhows was really looking into on just delparting it(networkingskills) starting to take over my thoughts. Hell with it, delpart it n ,get dos boot disk made from win2000 to recreate Rom from cmd prompts?
Is there such a wipe? Mean just wipe all clean without it going back to recovery to reboot from?

Whats the good news? They dont mention the EVO4G in there, and they wont unlock it either. Its almost to its EOL, they want us to buy new phones so why unlock it?
My 2¢
if you have another sprint phone.....
Call sprint, swap esn to other phone.
Sell yours on craigslist.
Buy another one on craigslist that's rooted (call and swap esn to phone to make sure it works)
Go home, install whatever you want.
