Total Noob here, need some help! - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, I am brand new so bear with me. I JUST got my EVO today, and it came with the upgrated .6 software. After 2 hours of trying, I finally figured out that the software prevents you of rooting your phone.
So I guess what I need to do is roll back to a different version. I've read some threads about it, and I am feeling a bit confused. Most of the threads assume common knowledge, and that is something I just dont have yet. Could someone post a step by step walkthrough on how to get my phone back to a state that I can root it? Or maybe its just easier to just wait till someone figures out a way to root the phone using the .6 software? Any help would be appreciated, cause Im sure as hell not going to pay Sprint 30 bux a month for tethering....

You need to get back to the release version of the software, ends in .1. Since the version you are using is newer (.6) the system is rejecting the flash.
This thread has the version of the software the evo was released with. It's an .exe file so you just save it somewhere on your computer and double click.

If you look at step 2 here

it tells you the steps and files required to enable the downgrade.

Yea, I dont fully understand what step 2 means. So I get the .exe first? then what? Also what does "go into your shell" mean? I'm sure I'm making it more complicated than it really is.

I had .6 on mine and used biles guide and it worked fine. It's in the development section. That may help
I just went and looked (to make sure I wasn't crazy) and it does work with .6

If I buy a new phone tomorrow, can I root it? Or is it going to be root-proof...

Just curious what the verdict is there. I had no problem rooting my first one, but now I have a bunch of paid root apps to carry over and it would suck to not be rooted because they are shipping with a patch or something.
Does anyone know the answer?
I even if it ships with th latest OTA you should still be able to root it. I believe there is a thread in the dev section that explains how to root the newest version

I'm running the latest OTA patch and I was able to root my Evo today. It's dead simple; it even has a video guide. Here's the thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=718889
Yes, but I need Simple Root ha ha. Ok, well I'll go ahead and give it a shot, then.

A video guide detailing every step is as simple as it gets . I have absolutely no knowledge in the inner workings of Android at all, but I got it all working.
Besides, I don't trust those three click root methods. They might miss an important step, neglect to permanently unlock the nand memory, etc.

[Q] Unlocking the New HTC EVO 4G

I know, I know, I know...
I am a member of a few different forums for other things and there is always a neb that comes on and asks a question that has been beat to death.
I have heard that God kills a kitten ever time someone post a thread before doing a search on what you are trying to get answered. So for my sake, God's sake and that poor kitten sake, I did read through a lot of post before I had the sack to post this question
I am posting this question because there seems to be a lot of different answers to a lot of different questions, so, I was hoping for very direct answers to these questions that I know have been asked plenty of times...
Here it goes...
I have purchased the HTE EVO w/ android 2.2 and I have had it for about 2 weeks.
I want to root my phone, which is my first ever smart phone.
This is what I would like to happen...
1) I want to be able to have the restore point so that I can flash my phone back to stock so that if something happens the warranty will still be good.
* Does this save on my home pc or sdcard? Or Both?
I have read that you need to download here not there(ruu...clockworks/rom manager)...no here not there...If you download anything but this you will not be able to get it back to the stock setting and Sprint will know you have rooted the phone...The whole thing started to get a little confusing.
I am a very simple person so I am hoping for a very simple answer, if there is one.
1) How do I root my HTC EVO that has the android 2.2?
2) How do I make sure that I can have a recovery point incase I mess it up (brick, etc...)
3) How do I make sure that I can flash my phone back to the original settings just incase I have to send it in to be fixed for some reason, which rom manager lets me do this?
4) Is it legal to do this?
5) What might be the biggest no-no to do before, during and after you root your phone?
Thank you in advance for taking the time to read this.
Visit the wiki, that should answer most of your answers.
1. Rooting voids warranty
2. Always perform a nand backup if you want to revert to your previous state.
Visit the wiki, the instructions are simple.
EDIT: Actually the wiki will answer all of your answers.

Sorry for the silly ? But what is the wiki?
It is a sticky in Android Development called Evo Wiki. You have to put effort in searching, I believe in you!

DO NOT RUN UNREVOKED OR YUO COULD PERMANENTLY CORRUPT YOUR PHONE!!!!! at the moment, there is no brainless way of doing it. you need to manually set up the adb and usb drivers, and then do some coding work, along with downloading like 1/3 gig of files.

depends on what he's wanting to do..if he's rooted trying to go stock or keep froyo with root, also, if he's stock GB and wants to go back to froyo, won't happen, hBoot versions different and will pop up with a message saying the update is too new or something like that.
so a little info on his part will help us out by helping him out!

Anyhows was really looking into on just delparting it(networkingskills) starting to take over my thoughts. Hell with it, delpart it n ,get dos boot disk made from win2000 to recreate Rom from cmd prompts?
Is there such a wipe? Mean just wipe all clean without it going back to recovery to reboot from?

My 2¢
if you have another sprint phone.....
Call sprint, swap esn to other phone.
Sell yours on craigslist.
Buy another one on craigslist that's rooted (call and swap esn to phone to make sure it works)
Go home, install whatever you want.

4.24.651.1 Update

Good afternoon,
I searched as best I could for an answer. I recently had my phone replaced because of water damage. The new phone I recieved has version 4.2.651.1 software. Is there anyway to get it back to version 3.x.xxx.x? (waiting for slap) If there is a way, please let me know. I would like to root my phone but as I've read in the forums, 4.2.651.1 cannot be rooted.
Thanks,
CJ
It's funny that your FIRST POST IS AS GAY AS THIS. if it can't be rooted, then it can't be rooted. simple as that. There is an OTA online waiting for you. go update your phone. LMAO! no joke. that is going to be the answer in the long run. The problem to rooting the phone will be clearly in the next OTA. As everyone on here says don't upgrade an OTA, but well, that's the answer. :-D

There's no need for a reply like that. On topic - basically as long as you have the gingerbread update you can't root your phone. There are some phones with the gingerbread update that can be rooted but I think its a temp hack only.

No need for gay slurs man. Lets just be cool
As for the OP, no, unfortunately no way to go back...it's sad I know. I had to get s on and unroot for a repair (knowingly of course) and now i kinda wished I still had a broken screen. Hehe. Until someone hacks the hboot 2.16 to allow us to downgrade to an older one we cannot get s off and consequently no permanent root, not that there is temp root either.
But if you like different Rosie mods there is a link in my signature about being unrooted. See if you can find anything there

not cool.
OP, from what I've gathered, a few people have received refurbished EVO's w/Gingerbread that have s-off from probably previous owners rooting their phones. If you received a refurb'd evo with s-off, I do believe you can flash on old RUU. More authoritative figures could confirm or dis confirm this.
Please boot into bootloader and tell us of you are s on or s off.
To do so turn off fast boot in settings then turn off phone, then hold volume Down kkey and power button

Confused about rooting my DHD

Hi,
I got a Desire HD from a friend for free, and now i want to root it and install custom rom.
I have found alot of rooting guides, but there is a few things that confuses me a lot.
The phone has 2.3.5 software and sense 3.0. So i need to downgrade first, that is okay.
But this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905003
Does what i need to do, but i dont know what android version the phone came with, and my friend just bought it and used it, he is not interested in
phones and things like that so he doesnt know either.
So my problem is that i don't know what android version the phone came with, and if i can use the guide i just linked to
I found many different ways to root it, just got very confused about everything.
Maybe anyone can help me out?
I think your phone comes with 2.2

Ok, that guide will get you in troubles. After upgrading to gingerbread, reflashing a froyo RUU will probably get you stuck. The best is always to consider that your phone came with GB, just to avoid issues.
If you want to root you need to follow this:
http://tau.shadowchild.nl/attn1/?p=74
and if you need further help with some basics, just use the guide in my signature. If further help is needed, just let me know!!
Thanks
But im not sure i understand the steps in that guide?
What should i choose in the cmd? There was several things to choose..
EDIT:
I think i understand now, i only need to press 1 as that fixes everything?
The other one is for going back to stock right?
Then it shouldnt be a problem
