Are there any refurbished HTC desire sold as new ?? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I am currently travelling at Hongkong, here in Mongkok district of Hongkong, there are hundreds of shops selling mobile phones at 'quite cheap' prices.
I just bought a HTC desire, it was sealed with plastic, and the storekeeper said that it was a HTC desire with HK warranty. For HKD 4100.
I wanted to buy 2 units, one for my sister. But the store only has 1. So I went to a store next door, and the storekeeper said what I just bought must have been a 'refurbished' one. He said the normal price in HK should be around HKD4250 - HKD4300.
Question is, Are there really any method to check whether this new phone I just bought isn't a refurbished one? or a second hand sold as a new unit ? seeing me as a foreigner, they would think I am easier to trick.
Blackberry units, at least, has its own call/data meter, which is unresettable, so I could easily know whether the unit was new or not..

here is the photo of the phone in the store

if you take the back cover off there are two screws at the top right and bottom right that should have "Void" stickers on... not sure if there is anything else you can check, software is guarenteed to be reset, maybe check for signs of wear on the screws while your there..

from what I heard, the store would go as far as replacing a new outer case for it.
I didn't see any signs of wear on the screws though...
Are there really no method by software to know whether this phone has ever been used before (call/data) ?

if there is no way of telling, whats that point in finding out?

because there is no way of telling just by looking from the cases and screws, now I am asking whether there are methods to find out by software/system ? something like a call/data meter which is un-reset-able. are there any?

I have been in Hong Kong last week myself and bought my Desire there.
The best price that was offered to me was at Tsim Sha Tsui at a shop right opposite of the mosque in a corner store on Nathan street. They asked for 3500 HK$ and I could bargain them down to 3100. After I agreed they told me they would need to unlock the phone and I should not make any updates afterwards. I did not like that and got my money back right away. They explained to me that these cheap offers are imports from the US. They need to unlock them since they are branded, that is why they are that cheap.
For 4100 you should get a regular unbranded and unlocked phone.
If you're unsure, as was I, go to Fortress - they might be a bit more expensive (I paid 4450 HK$) but you get a proper guarantee plus an 8 GB memory card add-on and they put on a display protection right in the store. Not to forget the good feeling about having avoided to be fooled ... ;-)

One thing that just popped up in my mind:
Why don't you just call HTC support and ask them? I called them course I had some questions and they registered me as a customer. They would immediately be able to tell where the phone comes from and how old it is - or if the IMEI is a fake. You could even tell them a fa- ehm I mean they do not check if your name is really your name...

Side not missing :
I took the photo's with my old XDA II so give me a break here anyway cut to the chase the tiny little screw is missing on that one side. I've tried radioshack/sears hardware etc, and I cannot seem to find a replacement, I don't know where to go or what to do from here.
*EDIT* - I just realized I posted this in the wrong category it should be moved to Accessories, since a screw is an Accessory, I'm sorry.
How wierd is this...I have the same screw missing on the same side!
Could it be a design fault?

I'm not sure, I don't remember it falling out, but I just recalled seeing that it was gone.
But I've also looked at : http://www.itbox.com.au/catalog/images/itbox-xda-2-s.jpg
and I notice there are screws in both sides! Maybe its a common thing to lose a screw on that side because of the keyboard or something... but I want a new screw!
I too missed it a few days before. I had to take it to service center and get it fixed with a new one.
They charged my Dhs 5 (aprox U$ 1.35)
same screw on same side.
That screw just popped out. Good thing the unit was in my pocket and the screw didnt get lost.
I was forced to buy a specialized screw driver just to put the screw back.

Your lucky you still had the screw. I've Had the exact same proplem except my screw got lost!! Anyway After much argueing with orange, I got a contact number for HTC that got me though to an answerphone. I left a message on that and they called me back and sent me some screws for free!!! If I find the number I'll post it up here. As they sent me four screws I could send one out to someone if they REALLY need it. You will need a Tork 6 screwdriver to fit it back.
Please tell your company who you got the phone from as well as calling up HTC. When I spoke to orange and HTC for that matter they told me that they have had no other reports of this happerning to others despite loads reports of it on here.
thats interesting that it happened to all of us that same way hehe, well I need a new one and I've tried every hardware store possible =(
Am also missing one. is my 3de MDA! first 2 where exchanged by t-mobile for the missing screw and a hardware problem. think they aren't really tightened... hope anyone got some link or adres where i can get them!

How to identify an "original Samsung Battery" on eBay?

The question is quite simple. Many people claim their batteries are original when they aren't. The fact that they cost 9 USD when, in Brazil, they cost over 100 BRL also make me wonder (mainly because USD BRL conversion is 1 - 1.8)
it's hard to tell if you shop online.
But if you can actually get your hands on it, there are couple things you can do.
The easiest way to identify is rip open the sticker on the battery. ( it's wrapped around the battery, so even if you rip it open, you still can wrap it back )
There should be carving like in the picture below.
{

"lightbox_next": "Next",

"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
But there are a new type of identical copy right now, that has the same carving as the picture above.... if you run into those.... see if the batter wrapper ( the one u rip open ) build quality is good and good luck....
One more thing, the the original battery weights 49g, and most the fake ones weight around 45g.
If you are buying on ebay, there is really nothing you can do until you get the actual item. And to be honest, if the seller do selling original battery on ebay for a cheap discount price, he is probably loosing some money there. I would find a more reliable source if I want to buy stock stuff.
That was a very useful response, thank you. Would you happen to know any worldwide deliveres worthy of trust? And what would be a reasonable price for the original battery?
not that I know of :x i usually either just suck it up and buy a cheap one that I obviously know it's some pirated stuff, or just dish out the cash and order from samsung. At least I can sleep better that way knowing what I am getting exactly...
The problem is Sammy still does't sell anything for the Note in Brazil.
all the battery is fake in china

I know vodafone have them in white try look in one of those stores my friend got one from there. Don't know the nearest one try check on the store locator.
Vodafone or the carphone warehouse might have them in stock.. They are only available in white, the black is for the one S. Below is a link to phone shops near the hotel all within walking distance
https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=e...FBg&sa=X&oi=local_group&ct=image&ved=0CAYQtgM
Edit: other shops might have them so it would probably be best to have a look at all in the area
I've not found anywhere selling this yet, I just want the hard case (not flip cover)

I ordered the flipcase and the plain hardcase from expansys yesterday with express shipping and they are waiting for me at my local dhl drop point. Maybe a bit more expensive then you might find somewhere else, but they have them in stock...
Never mind, just checked expansys again looking for a screen protector and noticed that both cases are out of stock now.

The hotel is very close to Oxford Street - just ask her to try some shops on there, she may get lucky.
I had a look and on google shopping Uk Mobile Store got them in stock for £11.99

[Q] Unique Problem With SGH-T989 Galaxy S II! Need Expert Advice!

I recently purchased a Samsung Galaxy S II T989 off of craigslist. It was described as Brand New, and came with box and all original accessories, etc. Still had screen protectors and everything on it, so i assumed i would have no problems. I am using AT&T and wanting to unlock it so that i wouldn't have to switch carriers. I paid a pretty reputable website 25$ for the unlock code, which i received and entered as directed.
I attempted to enter my SIM and i get an invalid SIM message. I called Samsung to figure it out and they had me send them the phone. They received it and inspected it to ensure nothing was wrong. They then tested the IMEI which came back as a black-listed phone, but would not disclose the reason.
So t-mobile will offer me no help what so ever, nor will samsung. I try calling the *#7465625# number to test if the phone is unlocked, but i get an error message stating "The process com.android.phone has stopped unexpectedly" and i have only one option which is force quit. I used the factory reset option a couple times to see if this helped at all, and got nothing.
I only have experience with iphones, so i really know nothing about the android OS. I've heard a lot about "rooting" and such for the unlock but it's like a whole different language for me. If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated. This phone has just been sitting in my drawer for the past month because i have absolutely no idea what to do.
Sounds to me like you may have bought a phone that someone perhaps filled an insurance claim on. I know I had a phone taken once and filed a claim on it and got a new one, eventually got the old one back and when a friend took it in it was taken on the spot. This may or may not be the case.
Yup sounds like someone bought a phone, Reported it lost,Kept the replacement, and sold you the stolen one. The same thing happened to me about a year ago with a HTC G2 from craigslist. You could try rooting (really not as scary as it seems) putting a new ROM then try to unlock again

That is what i'm assuming the case is. I've heard of friends and such running into the problem, but never thought i would fall victim to it.
Do you know where i might be able to find a rooting guide for a complete noob like myself? Step by step in depth kind of stuff? Would the fact that the phone is blacklisted cause me to get the error i'm getting whenever i try to test the unlock? Is it possible to unlock the phone for another GSM carrier even though it is blacklisted with t-mobile.
Explore all the options of getting your money back. If no good, you can always try to get someone to chqnge the imei for you, beware tho, its same illegal as changing vin plate on a car. Theoretically noone will help you, but practically, there are plenty shops selling nintendo cardridges with 100 original games in one...

You cannot ask on here how to fix this problem. It is against the rules, and illegal. This thread will be closed.. Just saying.
Ebay it with bad efs in the title, sell for parts, will probably get a coupe hundred for it. Don't buy a phone off frauds list unless you meet them at the retail store and have the number ran. At least then if they report it stolen you have some record of the transaction and may be able to get it UN black listed. Crappy situation that is for sure.

As stated, the course of action you were proposing is illegal and therefore discussing it on the forum will not be tolerated.

Now the phone seemed fine, from what i could see from the third of the screen that was still working. It still booted up and charged etc, still got calls..
I looked into getting a screen replaced and to my disbelief i found out it would cost me £120. I figured i'd get a replacement and fix it myself, as the phone is only worth about 200 quid now anyway.
I bought a LCD from Ebay for £50 and i successfully opened the phone and removed the broken lcd/digitizer and replaced it with the new one.
Ok you might all be thinking.. "whats the problem" - Well it appears i've snapped the powerflex cable, close to where the button is connected to it.
(I think those of you in the know will know what i mean)
I'm torn between 3 options here..
1. Buy a powerflex replacement £6.50 and install it myself, bearing in mind there might be something else wrong.. or the LCD just doesn't work..
Also i'm not 100% sure the powerflex part is easily removed/installed. I know one section of it is a snap-in connector.. not sure about the left side of it.
2. Get it done professionally for £50ish - bearing in mind the phone is in bits, and the shop i send it to might make up some BS stories about how i've destroyed other bits needing replacing etc etc..
3. forget it all and sell it on ebay as spares/repair - bearing in mind all my sensitive data, apps, and pictures are still in the phone
I just wanna get it fixed, working, and all my data and stuff off it so i can sell it i probably would have kept it had all this disaster not happened, but I'm in the new phone mindset now and my contract ends next month :fingers-crossed:
For 6.50 it has to be worth a try, you're gonna get a lot more money, and satisfaction, for it if its fully working. and if it doesn't work, well it's just the price of a MacDonalds. oh and if it's the cable I'm thinking of it's no worse than any other one in there.

I'm going towards that route tbh...
This is the part. I tore the right most part.. just below the button.
Got to fix a new power flex mate
The phone albeit might be worth £200 to you but with a bust screen/power flex its worth £70/100 on ebay
Just make sure while youve got it in bits you dont knock off any of the contection tabs

Their absolute bastards to repair thats if you can source them any where
and if any one reading this can tell me where to get them id be well chuffed...im fed up with making me own
Thank you
