Is there a vanilla Android 2.1 or 2.2 ROM? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just want to get rid of this Sense UI stuff. After coming from a Droid the Sense UI is very busy looking and doesn't really offer me a lot above the plain 2.1. I'd love just a vanilla Android ROM that had everything working (cameras, 4G, etc). Does such a thing exist?

Cyanogen will be out soon..I suggest following that for AOSP 2.2

I'll keep my eye on CM, wasn't sure what it was, exactly. Thanks for the reply.

The nightly builds of CM are fantastic. I've had extremely minimal issues with them, and I've been using them as my daily since they were released.

You don't need a ROM, you can turn off Sense on the Evo and use vanilla Android if you want.
From the home screen, go to settings - Applications - scroll down and choose HTC SENSE - press Remove Defaults - press Home button and you'll get a pop up asking you to choose between Sense and the stock UI, click use as default and choose stock and you're done.
You'll get default home screens, launcher, and 3D app drawer like the NEXUS ONE, on the flip side you can still use the great Sense widgets and apps.

Poll: Sense vs NonSense

So I just want to get a feel for what peeps are using these days.
Do you Sesnse or NonSense ROM?
At first I like Sense when I bought the phone, but now I like nonSense better each day. Although, I still missed some of the widgets such as FriendStream from Sense though.
Ever since I started using Launcherpro, I don't think I can use Sense ever again. The only Sense App I miss the calendar lol.
I love the weather animation on the homescreen and most of the widgets
I like sense and the widgets, but I cannot believe that the evo didn't get the ability to have a landscape homescreen. I had been using Zen's MyTouch2 port on the hero and it has the ability to rotate the full sense homescreens.... Why they wouldn't include this for a phone that has a kickstand and is obviously going to spend time horizontal is beyond me.
Anyway, I prefer horizontal homescreen orientation for use in my car dock. I haven't had time to pull all the apps I don't want out of my Flipz build yet, but when I do I will probably switch back to Helix and delete all the sense apps and widgets...Until we get a sense build that rotates or until we get a real AOSP build. I would love to use a Cyanogen build with the 360 degree rotation built it, that is the coolest feature IMO.
I used to like Sense. Evo is my first Android phone. I thought Sense was great from watching reviews and such.
After a while, I started to get more and more into custom ROMs. I flashed the test build of Froyo on to the Evo and it was great.
I realized I never used any of the widgets except for the switches, and there are nonSense alternatives. I just like the nonSense 'feel', I guess. No real explanation, just a preference.
I loathe Sense. The rounded corners. The gimmicky widgets. I like a nice clean interface. adw.launcher is working pretty good on 2.1, but vanilla Froyo is the best.

[Q] Hybrid ROM?

I would firstly like to express my gratitude to everyone involved in making the Incredible live up to its name.
I have cycled through various ROMs, and at one point I had SkyRaider 2.5.2 Vanilla. (This is my first Android-based device, so if I use n00b terminology don't flame me to death.) The homescreen looks to be stock android, as opposed to the Sense "Themes", but I must admit, the selection of widgets is awful. I really like the HTC homescreen widgets, like the flip-clock and weather widget.
Basically put, is there a way to get the HTC Sense widgets in a vanilla flavored ROM?
I know this would require running both Sense UI and whatever would be running the stock Android home screen. I downloaded the apks and I would get an error message saying "Application not installed" when I tried to put on the HTC widgets.
(Sorry, typically I would research what exact terms I'm looking to say but I'm feeling lazy today.)
Thanks in advance!

Beautiful widgets is a good place to start. It's in the Market.
Beautiful Widgets is nice and it's really customizable. I really only wanted the Sense style flip clock with the weather, so I went with Fancy Widget.
As far as getting Sense stuff in SR Vanilla, you can do it but it takes some monkeying around with what needs to be installed in order to make other stuff work. If you're wanting Sense stuff with Vanilla styling, the best thing to do is to get a Vanilla theme. I think someone had one called tainted vanilla or something. It should lay right over the top of Sense... You'll still have the Sense launcher, but you can add another launcher app (I use ADW.Launcher) to make it feel less like Sense.
Best option if you want sense-like widgets on a Vanilla ROM is to use LauncherPro Plus and Beautiful Widgets.
That'll cover just about everything.

[Q] Cyanogen with sense

is it possible to get cyanogen's mod with the sense ui...basically the best of both worlds
In a short answer- No. What exactly do you need from sense ui (rosie) and cyanogen specifically? What do you want from one or the other? Deficitism and ihtfp69 have created roms that combine the best of both worlds one would say with Uncommon Sense and Skyraider Vanilla. So reply with what you specifically want in the rom...and I can better recommend things for you.
Add IncDoes Sense/AOSP "Best of Both Worlds" to that list. Its not fully stable but it might be something to watch. This is an AOSP rom with some sense elements integrated, like the camera, gallery and dialer (I think). However you wont find Rosie (the sense launcher) on any AOSP roms here yet. The two mentioned in the previous post are sense roms that have been trimmed down.

well for sense widgets i really like the clock with the weather, favorites widget, and friend stream and i lock the lock screen too, but the vanilla on is nice because you can set phone to vibrate from there.
Sounds like Uncommon Sense may be the rom you want. It's got those things you've listed

Use cyanogen.. get beautiful Widgets for the clock from the market. Get launcherpro and use the friends widget. The friend widget is the same as friendstream.

Thanks for the help guys
At this point, koush or cyanogen woulden't put sense into CM. Thats what Makes CM a really good stock AOSP rom. For the Best of both worlds I would definitely try a Sky Raider rom. XD

This is probably the closest you'll get with AOSP. Other then that I'd recomment Skyraider Vanilla, which is based off sense so you get the sense goodies with the vanilla look.
If you want specifially Cyanogen, which is made to be Vanilla android, you can install the Black Notification bar which will put sense icons on top instead of the vanilla ones

[Q] Question to all you rom freaks out there

Hey Guys and Girls,
I love roms,I am always flashing new ones but I have an idea and I need help getting it.So I like sense but love gingerbread, the thing i love about sense is the lock screen where i can drag the apps to the bubble.Thats pretty much it,so I want to have gingerbread as my actual home screen, app screen, and for my keyboard.I know this sounds pretty crazy but can anyone help me find a rom or apps that can help my obtain this.Answers to this quetion would be very appreciated
install a sense rom then install a launcher from the market
Sent From My Optimized HTC Incredibly Since
Agile lock from the market is a nice sense 3.0 lockscreen clone. Its still inferior as the software is a little edgy and there aren't any sms previews like the sense 3.0 one has. I currently use this with CM7 along with sms popup from the market and it works great.
Otherwise download a stable sense rom with the sense 3.0 lockscreen (Nils Gingersense, Synergy) and use a different launcher.
There's also SupraROM which is an AOSP Sense 3.0 mix, but I'm not sure if it has the sense lockscreen.

I know when I ran MIUI about a month ago there was a Sense ring lockscreen you could install in Theme Manager. The downside was I couldn't figure out how to pick what apps other than the ones it gave you. Maybe that's changed, not sure there.

Ah right, I forgot about this option.
I do believe that they can be changed. You have to edit a text file though so its not as easy as HTC makes it. There's a MIUI lockscreen thread with a few of those sense ring lockscreen alternatives. However they all have one thing in common: when releasing the ring, the screen immediately unlocks. No cool "fly through the ring" effect.

Div033 is correct on the MIUI sense 3.0 lockscreens, they look pretty much identical but lack the fancy animation.
I'm not sure what the OP means by this:

By gingerbread, do you mean the stock AOSP look? Because if so, you could use agile lock on CM7, like has already been mentioned, or maybe try the synergy rom with the warm theme. It has the sense 3.0 lockscreen but is themed with quite a few AOSP gingerbread elements.

Why is HTC Sense 3.0 better than GO Launcher?

I've got a rooted and deodexed Inc2 running Virtuous Unitity 2.39. Ihave the HTC Sense 3.0 it comes with as well as GO Launcher...and have Home Switcher App to change from one to the other.
It seems to me that having the 5 button selection bar on the bottom (that can be swiped and added to unlimited times) is so much more efficient use of space and provides better choice that it removes any rationale to have anything like HTC Sense with it's standard three choices (and only two which are really used much).
What am I missing? Why can't others have the great lower selection choices of GO Launcher (is it correct calling this the Rosie bar?)? What does the HTC Sense give me that is more functional and useable?
The VU2.3.9 runs fine and was a clean and easy install.
If you change the launcher from Sense to something else, don't you lose the other Sense add-ons like the Weather Widget, Lock Screen and Themes?
You do lose the sense Widgets but like go and launcher pro they have built in Widgets. The lockscreen is an additional apk. Themes will stick as far as status bar goes. Also launcher pro, adw, and go launcher have downloadable themes.

No with launcher pro plus

The only reason I use Sense 3.0 is for the gadgets and the purdy interface, I would have switch to something else like the gingervanilla, other AOSP or RMK debloated stock rom if I were to use Go launcher.
You do lose some Sense widgets, but the lockout screen stays tied to Sense. For example, I have the weather on the lockout screen, but even when I switch to GO, the lockout screen after has the fancy weather animation.
I get a "sense" that there is not really a reason to deal with the HTC Sense launcher other than looks, but if I am wrong, let me know where.
I do know that I love having the 5 button rosie which I can spin to more 5 button rosies at the bottom. Much better use of screen real estate.
Sense is nice and its all preference
Can you know to me what's this your theme ?
i like the battery...Im using ROM BAMF...so Can I use this theme?

Are you sayin that running LauncherPro Plus over Sense you can still load the Sense widgets, and they work?

No launcher pro plus has the "sense" widgets built into the launcher. They are look alike

I didn't like the sense-like Widgets. They didn't have the same feel as the real thing. But I do still prefer LP to anything else including Sense (most of the time)
Sent from my Incredible 2 using xda premium
I think that is a loaded question. My thinking is Sense is for people that like Sense and AOSP roms are for people that don't care for it. I'm just trying to make things simple.
IMO, sense feels more professional, while anything else is for enthusiasts. And the Widgets in lpp are cool and all, but really they are a joke compared to the sense Widgets. And the intergration is nice too, something aosp hasn't done yet.

I actually don't care for the Sense widgets or the Rosie launcher at all. I use the Pure Messenger widget from the Market, and while it's not as pretty as a Sense widget, it combines e-mail, text/sms messages, phone calls, facebook and twitter into a single messaging widget as opposed to Sense's separate widgets for each.
As for the launcher, I just can't justify dedicating the whole bottom of the screen to 2 buttons - the app drawer and the phone button. The customize button is stupid, once you have the phone set up the way you like, that button is largely useless.
Of course, these are just my opinions, but to me, Sense is far from superior/more professional than anything else.
The Clock with weather is the main reason most stick to Sense, it has a cleaned look/feel that add to the homescreen. I personally can't do AOSP I miss the weather clock from sense until I switch back, I love unlocking my phone to a new animation

Fancy widget pro is better than the sense clock, you can get the senseclock, plus tons of different themed clocks, that is what i use. I like the sense photo album widget, which is pretty much the only widget that doesn't have a replacement app. I can't say i enjoy sense when very much and i usually run an AOSP rom (omfgb currently) but have a couple nice sense rom backups on my phone for when I'm itching to use sense.
