Sorry for such a silly question, but does the gmail app download the e-mails to the phone before I read them? I hope not.
The only other e-mail program I have used was Outlook for windows and that downloaded the e-mails before I read them.
the google apps version of it, is over the air using your data plan, on the browser
if you want to have it downloaded before hand, and not use air time data, then you'll need to sync it when you are connected to your computer, using the build in mail software, or you can use K9
check out this other topic, it might give you a better idea of what you can do with different email softwares

I am curious how is everyone managing their contacts?
Are you using Outlook?
Are you using Dashwire?
Are you using SIM Manager?
Are you using Photo Contacts Pro?
I am curious as I would love to import say friends info via facebook or any type of friendly software that can grab pics and any other info I have already obtained?
Any advice feedback or preference just comment and tell what's worked for you?
im too lazy too...i got some in dashwire, some in outlook...some written on my hand.
I just settle with outlook, I use it for all my calendar stuff too for both work and play and it does the job. Tried Dashwire but just wasn't feeling it...took longer to sync than hooking up to my computer. I use Google Cal Sync and Ogg sync to keep all in line OTA on the calendar front.
I'm still searching for a program that can sync my outlook cal/contacts with my dash OTA all in one.
I quit using outlook a year or so ago. Right now I am just using Hotmail / Live. With the Dash you can sync Hotmail and phone. So no need to use Outlook. All contacts are online.

Yes Outlook seems the best option. I also like Dashwire too, it is an amazing little program/webpage whatever you want to call it...

Im have trouble with my Picture Caller Id Screen. and Im using WM 6.1 and it comes up distorted... What would I be doing to change that?
dashwire ?
after reading their website that does sound pretty cool , but a question for anyone that is using it just to make sure before i sign up for their service .
it says you control what gets synced , and when .
just how much control does the user have over the process : can it be set to only update using wifi when i tell it to ? (since my service provider has no unlimited data plan available )
i use the free service by Nuevasync (www.nuevasync.com)
It is a two-way OTA sync with Google calendar and Google contacts using OTA Activesync.
Works flawlessly for me with 500+ contacts. I think it only works with one Google calendar right now and there are some restrictions with repeating appointments etc.
(Google contacts sucks but at least I am free of Outlook...)
I use outlook. I have around 2000 or so contacts (business) and I have had only some minor issues.
me too, using outlook, some duplicate contacts (1000 work contacts) but for the rest all ok
HTC Sync upgrade for HTC Magic, Hero &Tattoo "http://www.htc.com/www/SupportDownload.aspx?p_id=283&cat=3&dl_id=852"
it is at HTC site, but the Android rom is not broadcasting its USB id from cable, Can someone port it from Hero to TT2. So that we can Sync Outlook properly.
Sync client need to know it is exist.

It should be added to "NOT WORKING IN THIS BUILD:" as part of the build route....
Thanks to all developers making things work here.

Okay.
One hour to install this stupid software.
And it's still not done.
Seriously, how can someone use this damn windows os ?!?
If you are talking about HTC Sync software. Your PC may be overloaded restart pc and reinstall software it should not take more that 5 -10 minutes.

i think there are much better ways as using this software? how about a tool to sync your outlook contacts with gmail and gmail with your android?
think this works very well.
there is a tool its called once android finishes booting sign into you google account they automatically save all contacts as they are created in your android device.... and anytime you have to reinstall droid your contacts come with you lol

Import/Export of a C.S.V file is VERY easy between google/outlook.
you are all talking cross transfer I want to transfer direct not using Advert supported Gmail which I already use.! I want to sync Outlook direct. No way I would be slave to google for my email and other services. It is a commercial dive!
Sorry guys get your priority right. I am already using Google but I will not let them put Advert in my Email... No thank you!
Free or slave!
Regards
Tunc
I created a gmail account after setting up android and then went back to wm os used activesync with google and it keeps my contacts updated with both and i have not gotten a single advert email and seems a good alternative till usb sync is possible
agreed i stick with gmail since i get no advertisements what so ever

Am I missing something here? I don't get advertisements "in my Email." However, I do get advertisements surrounding my emails in a browser. Does that make me a slave to Google?
I take it you don't search using the major search engines like Google, Yahoo, or Bing either?
Check what is Google is planning they have right to include ads in your email as they wish. Since they have not implemented yet. Once they decide every email can include keyword base ads in delivery. if you mention Laptop you will get ads by Dell or Toshiba! So GMail will never be my main email for that reason only.... I always believe there are no free lunches! by Corporate.
I use my work email as a central source for contacts, managing them in Outlook. I sync with my Desire using HTC Sync, which works well and creates them on the phone as contacts with a type 'phone'. I would like to then sync these with gmail, but can't find a way to do it - and yes I've searched everywhere!
So the ideal would be - I add a contact in Outlook, which sync's with the phone using HTC Sync, which then wireless syncs with gmail - shouldn't be too hard, should it?
You could just export the Outlook contacts to a vCard and import that to Gmail.
That's my point - I could do it that way but it's a lot of manual effort. Surely there is some way of automating it?
Google are still working on the sync app, they've released the api to the community, unfortunately the only people working I'm it are corps wanting to make money, so until google pullover socks up. You either buy an app like 4team sync2, or manually update everything. There is a lb app called GO sync contacts, but while its free the dev has open
Sourced it, and gave up. There is an issue with it, so until someone fixes it. You need to buy one of these apps.

When I converted my phone contacts to Google contacts I did 3 things:
1. Exported all phone contacts to vcf file.
2. Copied the vcf file to my desktop
3. Imported the vcf file to my Google accounts (via Google contacts web UI).
It took about 1 minute.
I presume exporting all contacts to vcf in Outlook takes about the same time.
But the problem is I update my contacts daily (i'm a sales guy) so I want to keep them updated in all 3 places automatically by just updating Outlook. If either HTC Sync could create them on the phone as 'google' contacts, or I could sync 'phone' contacts to gmail, this would work.
If one of the apps mentioned above does this I'd be happy to pay for it.
Have you tried Companion Link?
chuk
If your willing to pay go for 4team sync2 it works very well, silent operation. And forwards all details you, can set sync times too. From memory its about $25

Thanks guys, Companion Link, 4team and Soocial may work, I'm going to look at these in more detail.
Shame that all I really need to do is to set the contact type to 'Google' when I sync and it would work, or sync contact type of 'phone' with Gmail.
How about making the PC the central sync point? i.e. use both GO Contact Sync and HTC Sync on the PC running Outlook.
As you know, we have two different email program in stock rom. "Mail" and "Gmail".
You have to be a google account for to use market and other stuffs. If you add a gmail account to your device your mails checking by "Gmail". You cannot add any POP3 account to Gmail. You should use for stock "Mail" Program for this.
It's look like to for every account we need a different mail program. It's boring and stupid idea. Yes we can add gmail acc. to stock Mail program but this solution is not good, either. Because we are using same account with different programs.
There is a mail program called K-9, we can install this and transfer all account the this program but basic problem is continuing: We must continue to use for "Gmail". We cannot remove gmail acc from this program and to use mail we need 3 different programs
I find this really unlogic.
P.S. I'm sorry for my poor English.
Don't see the issue myself, Gmail is just that, an app for gmail, if you don't want to use gmail then don't sync gmail. I use Gmail, and Mail for a hotmail and an Exchange account. You can use Mail for gmail but you won't have the full functionality of gmail.
i use k-9 since it supports push for imap
not using gmail at all. neither for desire nor at all.

Hello Yappay,
You seem a little confused. There are two main ways to access E-Mail on Android:
1. A dedicated app for a certain E-mail provider. The Gmail app on your phone is such a dedicated app, and offers decent background syncing because it's tightly integrated with the system and is configured to poll and receive push notifications for new mail in a way that's very efficient. The problem here is that these dedicated apps can only connect to their respective e-mail services: The Gmail app can only connect to Gmail, the Yahoo!Mail app can only connect to Yahoo, and so on.
2. A generic E-mail app that can connect to various E-mail providers through interfaces like IMAP or POP. The app "E-Mail" on your phone is one of these, as is K9-Mail or Maildroid. It's possible to add multiple accounts to these, including Gmail accounts, because Gmail supports both POP and IMAP.
If you really want to use only one app for all your E-mail, you can add all of your accounts to one of the programs from the second category. I'd recommend IMAP for the connection, because it keeps the server up-to-date with any changes you make to e-mails in the program (moving them to different folders, deleting e-mails etc.).
Guys
I am using an Android phone. I have the stock email program and I have also K9 and Enhanced Email all running at the same time.
I have an Gmail account but don't use it for email or for nothing really dont trust the cloud/google.
My problem is all the email apps work great BUT when I open outlook then they all get removed form my phone. So basically the only emails I am left with are the send ones(in my phone). This happens with my POP and exchange accounts.
My question:
1) is there a Mail App that will make a copy of the email in my phone so when I open outlook they wont get sync and disappear?
2) If number 1 is no then is there a easy way to full your phone to keep the emails.
Thank you

A properly configured Exchange server usually doesn't allow the local device to retain the message data, it's all accessed real-time from the server. Its possible you have what I call a Half-Ass Exchange, which means you have a central address directory, but the IT department set up Outlook and Exchange to store messages locally on the PC rather than on the server. This would lead to what you are experiencing... Outlook takes all the messages off the server, leaving your phone with nothing to see when it connects. There's not a whole lot you can do about that unless your IT guys will move your email data to the Exchange server. Or maybe they have an IMAP access option. (See below)
With pop3 accounts... You have a similar problem, except there is no way to for two different devices to access the same data. The closest you can get would be to configure both devices to leave messages on the server after downloading them. Any emailed replies then can only be accessed from the device from which you sent them.
If you have the option, switch your pop3 accounts to IMAP. All user data is kept on a server (just like GMail), and any device that is connected to that account automatically syncs with the server, including access to deleted messages and sent messages sent from any other device.
All that being said... The stock email program kinda sucks. I would stick with the 3rd party apps like K9.
This is a new issue to me. I came from a PRE WEBOS and i did not have that problem. I believe the problem is in the way ANDROID OS handles emails. Basically all its changed is the device all else remained constant. I believe but not sure that if i was run all my mail thru gmail this will not be an issue. Its that true?
Thanks

I access my pop3 mail just fine using K9 (again, I don't like the stock email program). Downloaded messages remain on my phone after they've been downloaded by my Thunderbird installation on my PC.
My current company doesn't have an Exchange server, so I can't speak to that with direct knowledge... My lat experience with Exchange was about two years ago, so its behavior could certainly have changed! My current company has 10 locations, and they are content to use a 3rd party pop3 solution for email. As an IT man, that annoys me, but then, I don't write the checks!
If you haven't changed any settings in your Outlook, then I would look closer to your settings in the email programs. K9 specifically has a setting that you need to check in order to download the messages to your phone (as opposed to just reading them off the server). I don't remember if it came checked by default...
Check to see if your phone email programs are set to actually download entire messages from the server, or just the message headers. In K9, there is a specific setting under account

I don't see that option on my Enhanced Email program nor in the stock email program and I can not use K-9 because y does not support outlook 2010 exchange yet.
thank you
