any news on NAM 3g desire - Desire General

Hi i have been out of the loop about any new phones. I've heard that there will be a US NAM 3g desire that will be coming out soon. Is this just a Telus Desire or is it an unlocked one with 850 and 1900 3g? I don't want to sign with a carrier. If it's a non telus NAM 3g desire, any idea when it will be coming out? thanks

does anyone know the answer to this?

telus is going to be releasing an hspa version (850/1900) in a few weeks. But it'll be locked.

Desire without 3G :(

hi everybody .. i just got HTC Desire for my wife and we have this phone for 2 days now .The phone don't read 3G and when i checked the network info the phone read EDGE and when i checked my nexus at same time i seen the network UMTS . so what i can do make this desire read 3G
Check your carrier's APN setting.

You are on T-Mobile USA right?
Sorry but there is NO version of HTC Desire that is compatible with T-Mobile USA 3G network. No, T-Mobile in Europe does not use the same 3G bands for 3G as T-Mobile USA, so even if the phone was sold with a T-Mobile (Europe) logo on it it won't have 3G in the US.
Currently there are TWO hardware versions of the HTC Desire. The first one, A8181, is the one that is sold in Europe and Asia, and this one does not have 3G in the US. The second one, A8183, is sold in Australia by the carrier Telstra. This version is compatible with AT&T's 3G network in most part of the US, but it is not compatible with T-Mobile USA's 3G network.

You will find that very, very few "worldwide" GSM phones will work with T-Mobile US's 3G due to the split 1700/2100 AWS band that TMo US uses.
Ironically though, you can take a TMo US phone out of the US and it will happily talk 3G to most other non-US GSM networks.

Dave

Most Europe/Asian carriers only use 2100 band for 3G, so as long as your phone supports that band (most GSM phones do) you can get 3G on their network.
T-Mobile USA on the other hand, requires BOTH 1700 & 2100 bands support in order for your phone to get 3G on their network. For a long time, T-Mobile USA was the ONLY carrier in the world that use 1700 band for 3G, and therefore if a phone was not carried by T-Mobile USA it didn't have 1700 3G band support (it doesn't need to because no other carrier in the world used it). Well, lately a new Canadian wireless carrier, Wind, also employs the 1700 & 2100 bands for their 3G network... so the chance of getting more phones to support these 3G bands has slightly increased. Slightly, because Wind is a new and small carrier...

Anyone using the A8183 Desire (Telstra) with AT&T in the US?

I've been thinking about getting this unlocked model that is compatible with AT&T 3G. I was wondering if anyone here has done this, and is there a way to get a sort "US-ified" version of the official HTC ROM that can receive OTA updates.
Thanks.
i'm currently using the A8183 in Canada on the Rogers network, which uses the same freq as AT&T for 3g, works great for me. however, if you wait prob a month or so (or maybe even sooner) Telus/Bell will release a NAM of the Desire, they also use the same freq for 3g (Bell, Telus, Fido, Rogers, and AT&T all use 850/1900 for 3g)
i'm using an A8183 (Telstra) HTC Desire on AT&T... in my opinion, you won't get a US-type ROM without rooting and installing one of the custom ROMs... i'm using the DJDroid Froyo w/Sense ROM and have not had any problems. personally, i don't worry about OTA updates because i'll get them on xda first.
I too have an a8183 on at&t. The only problem is that at&t does operate on 1900 mhz for 3g, but 850 mhz will not completely fallout till the end of the 2010. So If you live in nc, ga, sc, or va . The southeast market. You won't have the 3g because they currently run 1900 mhz 3g. I can still stream music on edge pulling 100 kbs up and down.
Patience is a virtue and locally in NC I have seen an internal ATT map showing many cell site upgrades complete, but they have not switched it on yet for 850mhz.
Latest news is for Atlanta and Manhattan switched on.

Thanks guys. I think what I'm going to do is wait and see if AT&T comes out with their own version of the Desire this month, like has been rumored.
At&t will not get the desire. I am an employee and waited and waited. We may get the rumored dual core Qualcomm since it was just delivered to HTC and the incredible went to Verizon. So we are next for the bigger one.
There is a Samsung coming out Sunday, but I just love the support for HTC with xda. You will have 850mhz umts by the end of the year if you live in a 3g area.
What state are you in?

I think I may still wait to see what AT&T comes out with from HTC, even if it isn't the Desire. The new Samsung Galaxy S phone on AT&T looks nice, except for the fact that it doesn't have a camera flash. That's a big omission in my opinion.
I'm in Connecticut, where we already have 850 mhz.
Go for it , because gingerbread 3.0 will be a whole new class of devices. Maybe even dedicated graphics cards. But thats about a year away.
Plus the imei is not registered with ATT so you can get away with a 15 dollar data plan. Dude you got 850mhz. Shazam......

it's probably a good idea to wait. i got an a8183 a couple months ago, i love it but the only reason i got it was because my trusty tilt running eclair was run over and for some reason i didn't want to get a nexus (which is probably what i should have gotten). i was banking on the tilt lasting about another year so i could get on the dual core wagon but no dice. don't get me wrong, i love my desire but with all the cool guy stuff just over the horizon i wish at&t would have released the aria a couple months earlier, so i could have bought a less expensive phone to hold me over til the new stuff came out.

I see that Telus just announced they're getting the Desire soon, which will probably run on 850mhz and 1900mhz. So, I'll see what AT&T does and if nothing and the Telus version comes out, I'll get that one.
I live in North Carolina. How can you tell if they are using the 1900 or 850 band for 3g? I found someone selling the HTC Desire for $500/shipped and was going to get it until I saw this thread. Didn't know if there is a way to find out where AT&T had gone to 850 for 3G bands.
RTP area here and we are definitely on 1900 mhz, and will be strictly 850 mhz by the end of the year. Edge is pulling about 100 kbs up and down.

Depends what HTC Desire you have. Some can only get certain types of 3G with certain Desires.

Well, there is 2 models of Desire as far as I know; the A8181 (Not AT&T 3G compatible) and the A8183 (Telstra version, compatible with AT&T 3G). If your Desire isn't working with AT&T, then chances are it's an A8181.

Remove your battery and on the phone lists the model number next to the imei. A8183 is what you need outside of the southeast market until 2011.

There appear to be 3 models of the 'classic' Desire:
A8181 - Euro version with 900mhz/2100mhz UMTS/WCDMA
A8182 - North American version with SLCD screen and 850mhz/1900mhz UMTS/WCDMA
A8183 - North American / Australian version with AMOLED screen and 850mhz/1900mhz UMTS/WCDMA
Hope that helps!
I'm using a htc desire A8183 in Colombia, and it works beautifully with excellent 3G network speed of navigation and a month ago I got the ota update for Android 2.2 Froy. I'm really happy with the phone

Actually, all the A8183's in Australia being sold have SLCD screens, not AMOLED.

AT&T Data Plan Pricing

I apologize if a thread like this already exists, I couldn't find it.
I'm planning on purchasing the Telus Desire with 850/1900Mhz 3G for use on AT&T once it comes out. However, I want to confirm that I can use the "dumbphone" unlimited data plan (which is $15 or $10 for families) instead of the regular, overpriced, capped smartphone plans. I do this currently on my Motorola Milestone so I want to make sure it works okay with the Desire. Can anyone on AT&T confirm this for me?
... nobody on AT&T will be able to confirm this with you because not even Canadians have this phone yet. But if they don't know the Milestone IMEI they probably won't know the Telus Desire IMEI.
Right, I know it's not out yet but I was more looking for someone with the regular Desire on AT&T who could tell me. (I'm figuring AT&T will treat all Desires the same way)
The imei is not registered with ATT. Therefore you can have as I do a 10 or 15 dollar data for quick messaging phones and standard flips.
You will have 3g wherever there is 850 mhz 3g. TElstra desire does not have 1900 mhz 3g, but ATT will have the entire network on 850 mhz 3g by end of the year.

Correct, the Telstra (Australia) Desire is UMTS 850/2100. But the upcoming Telus (Canada) Desire is UMTS 850/1900.
Thanks for the info, I'm glad to hear that. I'm probably going to wait for the Telus model so I get full 850/1900 and I think I like the idea of the SLCD better than the AMOLED for outdoor use. And the off-contract price for the Telus Desire is rumored to be only $450, hopefully that's true Now they just need to launch the darn thing!

How did AT&T get the Nexus ONE IMEIs if they don't carry it. Is HTC handling them over?...
I assume the N1 is a special case... and it was released in the US.
The regular Desire won't work on 3g in the US uses different frequencies for 3g, so you have to wait for the North American version to come out. That's why people are saying that no one has one on AT&T

[Q] Telstra Next G network with foreign Desire

Hi,
I have a HTC Desire that I bought in France with Orange. The phone is now unlocked and rooted, with a LeeDroid 1.8 rom.
I'm currently in Australia with a Telstra sim card and it seems I can't use the Next G. I have the HSDPA in few cities like Sydney, but everywhere else it's only Edge.
Does someone know if my phone is able to access the Next G ? And if yes, how to do it ?
Thanks a lot !
Antoine
Looks like you bought a Desire without 850MHz. Out of luck I'm afraid. The "Next G" you are seeing is 2100MHz which your phone supports but in rural areas Telstra uses 850MHz.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Is your Desire a A8181 or a A8183? The 83 denotes Telstra NextG 850mhz support.
If you have an 81, you will get 3G signal on every carrier except Telstra. If you have the 83, you only get 3G (NextG or 3.5G) on Telstra.
Yeah I have an A8181 so it explains why it doesn't works.
Thanks for your help guys !

Well, same problem for me !
I have a 81 and had chosen Telstra for the nextg and the cover...
The 850mhz support is software or hardware ?
Is it possible to do something on my desire to be able to use the NextG network ?
Cheers,
Quentin
No.

Your best bet is to use one of the other carriers in AUS such as Optus, Vodafone or 3.
The 850 Mhz radio is hardware based, and your phone has 900 Mhz radio.
3 doesn't support 900, I think Voda are deploying 850(but don't know how far their UMTS currently extends on 900) so the only long term alternative to a new handset would be Optus.

HTC Desire in USA

Hi everybody, I am going to live in the US for a semester and I want an american number. I found the possibility of buying a Sim Card on T-Mobile and use it with my unlocked phone. The problem is that my phone does not appear in the list of compatible phones. My phone is HTC Desire (Bravo), European model. In the box it appears the following: GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900 and HDSPA/WCDMA 900/2100.
Will I get 3G? I've talked to several operators, each one tells me a different thing. There was even one who asked for my IMEI and told me 3G would work 100% sure. Others tell me that I won't only get EDGE speed.
Who can clarify this? It is REALLY important. I LOVE my cellphone, I don't want one of those prepaid phones that are crap, I'd only buy another phone if it would be better than mine, but they are really expensive and it has no sense to buy a cellphone for 4 months when I have one cellphone that I love.
WHAT CAN I DO? I will use data on a daily basis to connect with my family overseas!
Most of US carriers use 850 and 1900MHz for GSM and 1700 and 1900 for HSPA and WCDMA, so I think you won't have luck with 3G, but the rest will do perfectly.
