I am trying to narrow down why some of us are having SMS lag. Lets say when you send or receive SMS, your phone lags for a few seconds to sometimes a minute. I have tried a few ROMs and still have this small amount of lag. I believe it might be the radio I am using.
TP2: TILT 2 from ATT
ROM: Feb 7th NRG Sense 2.5 from 21XXX
RADIO: 4.48.25.20

I had some SMS lag on my stock 6.1 tmobile ROM, but it doesn't seem to be there anymore after I ran the fix to kill the "sent" notification. I can't find the cab for it just now, but you can find it easily in the forums here.
EDIT: I have radio 3.45.25.14, just fyi.
Thanks. I disabled that. Are you using Sense 2.5?

I just switched to Sense 2.5. I haven't been using it enough to experience this lag, but I noticed when in a text message and switching to landscape I freeze up on occasion. I have to make sure the text screen is fully loaded before sliding my keyboard.
Energy.RHOD500.21891.Leo_07.Feb.2010
I have the sms lag with official T-Mobile WMO 6.5 and Sense 2.1. When I exit a chat it hangs for 5-10 seconds everytime. I also get lags after sending SMS's. I didn't have this problem with stock 6.1.
What are the chances we get a hotfix from HTC/WMO?
I've had the sms lag with every Manila 2.5 ROM I've tried. Starts out nice and quick and then after about 3 days it's very laggy. Deleting text messages brings it back up to speed usually.
Otherwise no lag here, specs in signature.

It's simple...the core code for the sms app is crap. Like Toleraen said, if you clear out your messages it's good for a few days...or less depending on the volume of text messages that you send/receive. I send/receive anywhere from 100 to 150 messages everyday so my tilt2 doesn't take long to start lagging. The problem is within the windows mobile code. The sms code has been crap since winmo 5. I've had the treo, mogul, tp and now the tilt2 and they're all the same...lag lag lag. That's why you still see the lag even in cooked roms. I don't believe any of the core code is re-written in any of the cooked roms (correct me if i'm wrong). The problem for me is that I need to keep all my text messages (for business purposes) so I will ALWAYS experience this lag. Either way, you shouldn't need to constantly be clearing out your messages for your phone to work. With all the text messaging people do these days it needs to be a daily task, and who has time for that. Microsoft needs to re-write this app and make it more efficient. BTW, htc released a hotfix for this "sms freezing" for the tilt2 and I installed it on my tilt2 and it didn't make a bit of difference.
So, if anyone out there has actually found a real solution to this, please share.
BTW I have an att tilt2 with the stock 6.5 rom.

I think a lot of the reason I don't experience this is because I keep my sms storage trimmed almost all the time. I too need to retain a lengthy history of texts, I just use a solution that stores and backs them up off-device in a way I can quickly reference via a PC...any threads I'm not actively using get backed up (manually), singly or in batches, at least once a day. There's a number of tools that can do this, I personally use MyPhone and Jeyo Mobile Companion.
If your need to keep the messages also dictates that you need them on-device at all times, then you might want to see if any of the SMS apps available for WM have the ability to save them in an accessible format elsewhere on the phone, like in a folder on the SD card (ideally).
This obviously doesn't solve the root issue (which I agree is endemic to WM...the same exact issue occured on my Wizard and my dad's TyTN), but it's a fairly painless way to sidestep it

I also use a couple of tools to back up my messages (jeyo mobile extender and mIQ live) so I guess there really isn't a need for me to keep my messages on my phone. I just don't have the time to sit there and trim down my sms storage on a daily basis. Deleting messages is also a slow process on winmo. It just annoys me that something this simple and easy to reproduce passes QA and gets released to the public. It shouldn't be up to the consumer to find workarounds for these bugs. Ultimately I think it comes down to trying to keep up with the competition. Microsoft and HTC are trying so hard to keep up with the iphone, blackberry and now the droid that they've really eased up their QA process and let things like this get passed QA just to release a phone. From my standpoint, they're not doing themselves any favors by doing this.
I text about 100 times a day as well. That is sending and receiving.
I was thinking that was the problem too, and as it seems a lot of us that have experienced the lag have a lot of text messages.
It sucks because I like to keep all my text!
This never happened on the WM 6.1 on my Tilt 1 though.
Coming near a conclusion that it is the major amount of text we have guys?
With my GF thread we probably have about 1000 something text messages over the past few months.

Yeah I didn't have the text lag with 6.1 either. I find it quite odd and annoying.
No lag in SMS, see signature for specs.
I also get a lag with the latest mighty rom but its mostly a lag when replying to a text message or even trying to close the window for text messaging it takes 5-10 seconds at times to close. I thought it was something with the software < i wish there was some time of program to overclock how fast the sms software works

How much text messaging do you do on a daily basis and do you regularly clear your inbox?

I text about 500 a month (based on my bill) and I keep a clean inbox. I delete it every few days.

This is why you don't get any sms lag. I do 500 every two or three days and I don't ever delete. I need to keep my messages for business purposes. I have software that backs up my messages to outlook but I like some redundancy. Either way I don't have time to sit there and clean my inbox on a daily basis and I shouldn't have to. With the volume of texting that I do I would have to clean it every day to keep my phone from lagging. Winmo stores an "unlimited" number of text messages (provided there memory available), yet the phone doesn't work properly if the inbox is too large. To me, that's a feature wasted. If you're going to give a phone a feature, make it so that it works.
Tmobile 6.5 Rom Mine lags all the time. I'm not patient so i soft reset most of the time. it is pretty annoying

Same here.
Is there a 3rd party application that can be used? The only thing I can do to stop the lag, is to run traditional mode, which is not what I want. (HD2)
I disable the HTC Messaging service and use the WM client.
You can still use the HTC messaging from the contact page of a person, but it sets the WM as the default
See my post here and try it out if you want.
Theres no lag at all.
I still get the lag after I send a message and exit out of the screen to go back to sms inbox, anyone find a solution yet?
Ever since the 2.2 Update, the entire Messages app for me has been laggy.
Starting the Messages app from the home screen is SLOW, but switching from one conversation to another is terribly slow as well. For a few conversations, I do have 1000+ messages each.
But the kicker is that while I was on 2.1 (as shipped, never updated to 1.4x) I had no slowness and lag with opening the Messages app, and switching between various conversations.
Anyone else notice degradation in performance for this app? I will be setting up Purging to get the normal performance back, but I am lost as to why it's behaving this way post 2.2 update.
I second this. My evo is slow when texting but everything else is great.
My wifes evo is not rooted and fully stock. Her Messages application has been getting slower and slower as she texts more and more. I would imagine that the massive amounts of texts combined with multimedia messages are bogging down the phones memory. Trying to delete messages is not working either.
I've erased all messages on my evo and texting is fast as ever. So, the problem has to lie with the amount of data the phone has to sift through in the application.
If anyone has extra input please help.

Solved by erasing her over 10,000 texts!!!
Hi I've searched around in different Android sense areas and can't seem to find an answer so I'm asking it, please if I missed it point me in the right direction.
I have a new Droid Incredible, just switched over from a Touch Pro 2, and I love it except for the fact that SMS Recipients is capped at 10. On the WinMo phone you could go in a tweak the registry to allow however many you wanted. On Android is there a way to do this? I plan on rooting it so that won't be a problem if I need too. I've read to use Handcent (has been giving me annoying pop-ups) or ChompSMS but I'd prefer just be able to use Messages.
I dont have a sense rom anymore, but if I remember correctly, it's as simple as going into messages..pressing menu..pull up settings, and then think with storage settings. You should be able to adjust the limit per thread and conversation numbers. Let me know if I am delusional..but I'm pretty sure that's it.
I've found that and theres a place where I can limit the amount of sms and mms's however nothing about recipients anywhere Any other ideas?
Anyone else have ideas? I'm using Handcent but after I send one message it acts like my group is empty and I have to restart the phone. Chomp was sending double messages, are there any other programs or methods out there? The group has 58 members
Is there a limit to how large a thread with a contact or total SMS limit between all contacts? I currently have almost 4,000 messages in 1 thread and they're all backed up, but I want to make sure I won't randomly start to not receive messages or have SMS force closing on me. Would anyone happen to know?
Don't quote me, but I believe about 4,999 messages (sent or received), as that is what I believe to be roughly the storage size in messaging. I'd double check through menu>settings>applications>manage applications and then check inside the messaging app. I believe the max size is 4,999kb which translates to 4,999 sms if each sms (not mms) is all 120 or 160 characters alloted. Not 100% sure, but I read something along that line.

That many messages is going to slow down your phone like nothing else. You wouldn't believe how much faster your phone will run if you just delete those texts.
You guys were definitely right. My phone was really starting to slow down when there were 3500+~ messages in that contact's thread. On top of the other 750~ or so messages my phone had, it was becoming really slow opening the messenger, receiving, and sending messages. I even had a few FC's. I went ahead and set a 3,000 limit for now and it's back to "normal" operation as far as I'm concerned, but I see what you were talking about with having more than 4,000 or so total messages causing a problem.
Hey, I run Omega Rom on my Note II. I need to send out about 100-150 text messages a day on a regular base and I keep getting warning messages with any SMS app I use that the app is trying to send out a large amount of sms messages.
I researched and found out it's a limitation from Jelly Bean's side. Is there a "fix" for this?? This is really annoying and driving me nuts!
That is a laaaaarge number of sms's to send. I think the limit is 100 sms every hour.
Anyways theres an apparent fix here.
Hope this helps.

Thank you, I will try this out
That's an awefull number of sms o send on one given day indeed. It reminds me of the teen in this country. A local news channel had a study the other day chatting about the texting habits of our today's teens. They found out that in Belize City, college kids were sending on average 1200 text messages per week .... unbelievable.
Anyways, getting back to topic. I know I'm not crazy but I swear I saw somewhere an options in the settings where you could have specified the limit number of sms. I'm on stock tho. It would be nice if you could reset the counter in the event you cannot increase the limit too.

Unfortunately the link for AOSP is dead (when you are actually about to download it).
I tried to apply it manually with SQLite Editor. Let's see if it will work tomorrow... here's hope...
Ok, that didn't work. What I did was adding the line to the settings.db (it was not in there) like explained here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=30682863&postcount=21
But that didn't do the trick...
