Did everyone watch Apple's press conference today? If not it's available on engadget:

So since every smartphone has a weakspot I'd like to know where the EVO's weakspot is. Has anyone found it? Maybe Apple doesn't think the EVO is a smartphone, therefore it has not weakspot?
update:
Just to be clear, "weakspot" is referring to a way to hold the phone to get the signal strength to go down.
I heard if you stuff it in your rectum, you drop more calls.

If you cup the top of Evo with your hand, Evo will lose signal
Its near the top of the back of the phone. Try covering it with you hand (the camera, leds, speaker area)
I do this and drop 2 bars immediately
It is towards the top. Im kinda surprised that any phones have side antennas when the phone is gripped from the sides
After scratching the damn thing today, I'd say the jutting 8MP camera in the back of the bloody thing.
Slightly marred the sweet red paint job...guessing they opted for aluminum versus stainless steel. Boo.
haha if i hold a evo in a completely unnatural way cupping the top of the phone while holding the bottom with my other hand for stability, it drops two bars, but not the call....proof the iphone 4 design is flawless.....what a BS press conference
Don't act like you weren't the one trying it out!

I don't have a weakspot... unless my Innocase is preventing me from finding it. No matter how I hold the phone I have the same bars.
Yea, Apple only showed the few newer phones that had the drop in bars when held the same way as iPhone 4.
Is this good design by HTC to have it near the top where you never hold it naturally? Or just the way it worked out? Since everyone in the industry is fighting this problem as Jobs said, wouldn't they develop the phone so the antenna would not get blocked or attenuated when held naturally?
I don't know enough about that kind of engineering stuff, just some things I have been wondering. Anyone else have thoughts on this?
Actually in the manual somewhere it tells you where to avoid covering the phone. If I remember correctly it's by the volume rocker?

Im going to say it was a good design move by HTC. The Bold 9700, Eris, and Omnia II (the three phones he tested signals with) were all released last year. He didn't make references to the iPhone4's more direct competitors (HD2, Incredible, Evo, Droid X) because they don't have this problem.
I covered the phone up all sorts of ways, sans the rectum thing, and the best I could get it to do was drop a bar on the WiFi strength. Network coverage was never phased?
The best way to take an Evo out quick is a pointed object real quick to the center of the screen. That's definitely the Evo's weak spot.

Hey guys... new member and user here. Just got my first smartphone, Samsung Focus, last thursday. I've got a few other questions but I'll get to the most important ones first.
I just received my new case.. a Monaco aluminum case. I did a lot of research and although there is very little info on this one, it definitely appears to be the most well designed. In the youtube review of it, they noted how the developer specifically cut ports in the case to allow for signal strength to be unaffected.
I just got the case and was thrilled with the fit and everything. but then for the first time since having the phone i'm having messages not sending. however it still says i have good signal reception. i then took the case off and had mixed results. put the case back on and had no issues for a bit.. now i'm having issues again. i have had random bursts of good and bad reception in my room where I am.
So is there possibly an app that tests exact reception strength or something? I'd really like a direct comparison with and without the case. By just looking at my bars up top, they don't seem to be affected with and without the case.
Anyone? Surely there must be a way to determine actual signal strength aside from just the bars up top, no?
If you have a metal case which more or less surrounds your aerial, then you basically have a Faraday Cage
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faraday_cage
...which will significantly reduce the signal received by the phone. Especially if you are holding it and are well grounded. If you're wearing thick rubber-soled boots, that's a bad ground. If you're barefoot, that's a good one.
Basically a metal case isn't a very good idea for a mobile phone.
Try this:
Dial ##634#
Tap call
You will now be in the diagnosis app
Now type *#32489#
Press the on-screen back button three (3) times
Tap 9 (it will say Antenna/ADC)
The Antenna signal strength number is displayed in -mD. lower numbers indicate better signal stregth (so -60 is a better signal than -100)
Hope this helps!

Hell yes! I knew this forum looked useful. How in God's name do you find that diagnostic menu? AT&T or windows function?
Anyway, I wish I had a second eye with me so I can take down all the numbers and run a hypothesis test on the sets of data.
However, just by observations over about 2 minute periods, I see no discernible difference between case and no case. Without the case, the db level seemed to average around 94-95 with a standard deviation of about 10.
If anything, the case seemed to improve reception, though I doubt there's any real truth to it. The reception seemed to average exactly the same as without the case, except I experienced less stray values jumping up in the 100's as I noticed without the case. Overall, I'd probably just list those values as outliers as I would probably just contribute them to the incoming signal itself.
I'll try testing again in another location.. however, as of right now, it appears the myth is busted that this case has any impact on signal strength.
Thanks so much for the help!

Welcome! Keep in mind that signal strength is affected by many variables such as location, how you hold the phone, time of day, how far away you are from the tower serving your phone, even the weather.

Yes.. of course. But my goal was to figure out whether or not my awesome new case was hindering signal strength. I tested it with and without the case while in the exact same resting position, as well as the same position with my holding the phone. I also did it multiple times to try to factor in periodic surges in signal strength.
Definitely makes no difference... possibly even better with the case.
And, by the way, does anyone else have this case? I'd have to say it's definitely the top case out there for the Samsung Focus. It offers much better protection than any others (open screen cases that is), while providing great access to all side buttons, and not looking nearly as ugly as most of them (Case Mate!).
Only two grips.
1. Why hinged? Why not just snap on like all the others? The hinge and clip barely add any bulk, but still they are not necessary.
2. Could use just a bit more screen room on the sides and top of the screen. maybe a few mm on the sides and a centimeter or so up top. But I'll gladly take that for the protection this thing provides.
So I was thinking about boosting my antenna signal with those Antenna Booster stickers. I know a lot of people say they don't work, but I think it's because they're not positioned correctly.
Anyway here's a picture of an unfortunate G2 I bought off Ebay used to repair my working G2. I keep it around for spare parts. Are those copper contacts really the antenna? Looks like the metal materials runs under a portion of plastic to extend the range.
I believe that the bottom is for cell use while the top is for blue-tooth and wifi. I was thinking of buying a couple and doing this too boost the phones signal.
There's enough empty space to place these stickers in there and try to boost the signal. Compared to some other phones I've had, this one has a rather weak signal in comparison. Especially in those spotty areas.
Not to rain on your parade but if a $4 sticker that probably costs .04 to make really helped at all, don't you think phone manufactures would already be using them? Any way you identified the antenna correctly, have at it

Thanks, I ordered a pack of 6 for $3. I'll report if there's any noticeable difference. I've used one long time ago on my Motorola Razer and seemed to work.
Really wish this phone came with a better loud speaker.
It could have been the placebo effect?
About the speaker, do you think we could find one that fits on eBay or RadioShack or whatever? So as to make it louder?
I noticed when I hold my phone with my left hand, the signal really sucks. I knew the cell antenna was in the bottom section and now I know why covering the left side is bad. I try to just hold the top part but it's hard when browsing or other functions besides calls. We all made jokes about the iphone and the "you're holding it wrong" crap but it seems to be true with our G2 As far as booster stickers go, they have been selling these things for many years now. They have never been proven to work and disproven many times. The placement of the boosters don't matter and were allegedly designed to be placed right side up and behind a battery. They don't supply power therefore couldn't act as a repeater or booster nor do they alter the design of the original antenna not to mention they don't even make contact with it. They used to sell for $20 but now sell for 1 penny lol! The only things that ACTUALLY work are external antennas (few phones even have ports for them anymore), cellfi, uma, repeaters, microcells, etc. So, shell out some real cash for a proven booster/repeater or hold your phone differently. Sorry... good idea though! Worth a shot...

Hello,
any news abut possible signal improvement?
I would like to replace the bottom GSM antenna with better one.
I've already tried couple of modifications, but without success.
I would appreciate if somebody could share hardware modification which really works and improves the GSM signal reception.
Thanks

Do people have no sense at all? If you wanted to do a test like this, hold both phone over the same surface (like concrete. not random granite pavers) and drop them the same time in the same manner. Instead of randomly flinging them in the air like this guy.
The problem with S3 aside from no frame except plastic on the edges is that they thin the glass near the edges like lunatics.. That is what makes it weak.
umm it was a petty good test IMO. Don't know why everyone is acting so surprised the S iii failed the test as the screen shattering on the smallest of drops seems to be a common problem with the S iii

The tests are very inaccurate. If test something there shouldn't be so many variables. In this instance, the way the phone landed, how it landed, the surface it lands on, angle of the surface it lands on. For instance he says he's dropping the iPhone 5 face down yet in the slow mo it lands on the side. Any kind of test should have very few variables with constants set for each trial. Anyone who payed attention in science class would know that.

I've dropped my phone several times on concrete (from about 3'-6') and never had a problem. It does have a case that I got from the T-mo store. It all depends on how it lands I guess. But agree that the tests were not conducted equally.

The test was more of a height test with the variable being the angle at which the phone drops which the reviewer tried to control (but failed). But either way, i was more interested in how the S iii performed on it's own. Sadly, it reaffirms the rumor that S iii screens are really fragile and easy to break

I am using one that I got from the T-mo store. I don't have the packaging anymore, but I would imagine it is just a samsung case. Its a semi hard silicone case. My brother works there, I can ask him to check later.
Tests like these do have a lot of invalidity. In order to have a more valid test, he should drop the phones at the same time, at the same angle, at the same height, onto the same flat surface.
Ugh give it up already.
His test sucks but we gotta agree that this gs3 that we have is very easy to break.

Random Thoughts on this Blasted Issue (is it even an issue?)
This test was not an accurate comparison, as such, between the two phones. Don't they both have "Gorilla Glass?" Regardless of if they do or don't, thing is... All types of glass have weak points (usually the corners) and at the same time there are individual defects... so its quite possible that this gs3 or even every gs3 is more vulnerable at certain angles.
That aside, its also important to note that the drops were *relatively* realistic... I've dropped phones and seen them dropped. A certain low grade HTC phone ended up with a (basically) shattered touchscreen that was held together by the coating (dropped from ~3.5 feet) fell straight on its front but because of an elevated "back button" the force was concentrated onto a corner of the screen (dropped on tile- small pieces of glass came out as well). And then I've seen an iphone 4 dropped on its back (nearly flat) (on contoured tile) and end up with a nasty scratch (not to mention the loss of sound to one speaker).
SO! Bottom line is in the real world you won't be able to control the circumstances of the drop. (Unless phones came with some sort of a self preservation function in the future). And there are enough variables to where almost literally anything can happen. Sometimes you get lucky. But almost always, these devices are fragile enough to where a drop now may lead to a failure down the road because a wire came loose and that was exacerbated by wear and tear or whatever the case may be. so AGAIN... Moral of the story... Don't drop your phone... Unless you are planning on upgrading soon.
Side note... Weight... GS3 is 21 grams heavier... so for the geeks out there thats 16% more force when the phone hits the ground... just saying... its a *negligibly* non-negligible change in the amount of beating... Who knows!!! Maybe in 20 years we will have phones with quantum computing and those flexy OLED displays so that it weighs in at less than 10 grams... We could chunk our phones and they would land like a newspaper/paper-airplane...
Last thought... regarding the NFC on the GS3 you have to actually completely touch the backsides of 2 phones?!? I dont know... but... it seems like you would have very little place to actually HOLD the phone (since its so thin)... Maybe thats why so many people keep dropping it all the time.:cyclops:
This thread is comedy. There's nothing complicated or funny style about how he tested the 2 devices. Whether he dropped the sg3 the same as he did the i5 or not. It shouldn't be surprising to anyone that this model of the i5 outlasted the sgs3 in a drop test. The i5 is encased with a metal shell, the sgs3 is encased in a good quality plastic shell. It's comparing apples and oranges. Geez!
I'm just sayin!

I know, I also noticed that he dropped the gs3 from a higher level after he cracked it, to act like he was surprised that the screen cracked more. what an iddiot, the iphone can be cracked also, he wasnt even trying.
As sad as it may be, I do think the GS3 is more fragile than the iPhone5. Is it more fragile because the S3 display is bigger, therefore have bigger weak points in the glass?

The Galaxy S3 has a metal frame too. Plastic is more durable too since it dissipates shock better than rigid metal.

Overall I think its pretty good, however, I notice if you press the phone to your ear somewhat hard, it will creak. If you press above the speaker grill it will slightly creak too. Its kind of annoying, but my Note 2 on T-Mobile does it also. I also would rather have capacitive buttons than a physical home button. The home button tends to make a "clicky" noise if you press the center, whereas pressing the sides result in no sounds.
I think the Note has better build quality than the GSIII though, but its still got ways to go. What do you guys have to say about build quality?
And for $700 one is to be very nitpicky about such things.

Unless you use glass or an equally hard material squeaks will be inevitable. I wouldn't count that as poor quality, just the way it is.

Your absolutely right.
Overall I believe the build quality is very good but Samsung will need to step it up to be in Apple's league. The back material should be improved, it seems to be quite prone to micro scratches. I understand that they can't use aluminum or glass since it would make the Note II weigh a brick but perhaps a matte type of plastic like HTC phones.
I don't think that because Samsung make their phone out of plastic that equals poor build quality. Their are advantages to using this type of polycarbonate to build their pones. Aside from making the phone thin and light I have read one of the reasons iPhone doesn't have NFC is because the aluminum body make it practically impossible.
I just wish they stopped using shiny plastic that is a fingerprint magnet and is more likely to show scratches. I'd prefer a back like the S2 or the rubberized type back.
It's a phone... I guess I'm a function over form type of guy.

Overall I think it's good enough on the quality with the materials. But I'm a little picky on some interaction parts like buttons, I hope Note II got more consistency and better quality. Power button and home button are ones that we press so many times. Initially power button was a bit loose so I actually disassembled and added two layers of tapes on the back of the button. Now it feels much more responsive and tighter.

My buttons are firm too, even home. No click.
I'd take this physical home button over capacitive any day (a previous poster states the opposite). Often the home button is a more convenient unlock button, makes it easier to tell if the phone is upside down or not when just waking up in the morning or in a dark room, and it's easier to operate quickly without looking.
I like the note 2 build quality. View the drop tests. Note 2 did EXTREMELY well. I have a case anyway so could care less about the look of the back materials and the front is sexy Imo.

Mine sounds just like a non mechanical squish keyboard (the "membrane" type keyboards) no click whatsoever but a feint squish. Trust me, I know what to listen for. My old sgs3- it "clicked".

Black ones will be coming out after the first of the year sometime...but...I am going to disagree with you about them not being in Apple's league...because to me they have already surpassed them not only in delivering a superior phone..but as far as the build quality of mine it doesn't take a back seat to them.Sure..the Iphones may be built out of higher costing materials...but all one has to do is go look on most all of the Apple forums and see just how sloppy they have become in the past 2 years..and I sure as hell wouldn't want a aluminum or glass back like what comes on their's...that is more prone to breaking and scratching than the poly carbonite Samsung uses..The mystic and glamor of the Iphone is nothing more than a trend that is waining...

That was including tax, but I should get a pretty penny for my iPhone 4s. So far I am not regretting anything. Worth every penny.
Just wish build quality was better. :/

I got $225 for my like new 3 month old 32gig IPhone 4s last week at the AT&T store when I traded it in on my GN II...so if your wanting more you might want to sell it outright to someone..
If the build quality of your GN II is not up to par...why wish it better...return it in your 14 day grace period and get one that is perfect..

Can't believe some of the complaints on here. The Note 2 is a solid piece of technological wonder. Jeebus. It feels like a $1K device easy. You guys have issues.

I tried to exchange to get a better one, but they refused because they cannot agree with my complaint about button quality so I have to pay a restocking fee if I really want to get a new one. I was quite mad about it because three store managers disagreed me for an exchange regarding the button quality.

Pay the restocking fee and get a new one. It sucks but they are doing that now.
You can call the executive office and complain to them and see if they will reenburse you on your next bill.
Make sure to check the phone out well before leaving the store this time though so there won't be a issue next time.

Does anyone else have a slight rattle noise coming from the camera area/back corner? You cant really hear it unless you tap on the back of the tablet lightly. My old(2012) nexus doesnt make this sound and not sure if this is normal on the new 1s or not.
i hear a tapping noise when i tap on it.
come on man, do you buy products to find problems? do not make this into the screen lifting issue with the first nexus 7. noone needs you exchanging yours a hundred times taking away possible purchases from other people.
Pretty sure it's normal. Same noise on my Nexus 4.
please dont start star the "screen lift" saga of 2012 with the 2013 model some people look for things wrong.. if you have buyers remorse take it back.
its the camera. you will notice that on a lot of devices with cameras. my Gnex does this, my wifes Droid Razr HD does this as well. my thunderbolt did it too. pretty sure it is something inside the camera housings.
dont tap there. its nothing to worry about.
i swear, the only time i find stuff wrong with my electronics is when OTHER people point them out.

My GNex doesnt make this particular sound, it makes a sound from the cover not being flush with the back tho.
Either way not a big deal, was just wondering if it was normal or not.
ridiculous mentality from some people here. A LOT of users, me included, go to forums like XDA to learn about potential build flaws because some of us actually care about getting quality controlled devices for our money. I actually didn't buy the Nexus 10 because of all the reports, both from forums and in reviews, about the bleeding, and I'm grateful for all those reports.
Just because you'd happily pay for a product with obvious defects and then defend the manufacturer to the bone like it was your employer doesn't mean everyone have that attitude. In the year 2012 gluing a screen to a bezel shouldn't have been a problem.
I'm not saying the OP has discovered a flaw here but any report of potential flaws is appreciated by someone like me and your overly defensive mentality is sad to see. Don't decide for others what a flaw is cause it is highly subjective.

lol, i just took the battery cover off the phone and tapped around, and the rattling got even worse....lol. My new N7 does have the rattling, though I dont think i would have ever noticed it, and I dont think its a defect at all.

i agree with that. its just some times (like the N7 screen lift saga) the defect isn't even noticeable until someone points it out to you.
The volume rocker rattles when I tap it. I've noticed on very smartphone and tablet I've handled pretty much does it as well.
Built like a tank, no issues here.

my volume rocker is solid, definitely seems like its coming from the camera.
Its the camera lenses. Perfectly normal. All cameras do this to some extent.
My galaxy nexus doesn't.... But remember it having a 0 shutter lag. Maybe it has a unique camera or something. Most other cameras click when tapped.

So i did a exchange and the new 1 i got has the same sound. kinda odd that some people are stating they arent getting the noise from the camera...
Anyone else getting the creaking/rattle?
Its the focus lens, lots of devices do this
Sent from my Nexus 7
does anyone else have it as bad as me?
I hear it even if i put if I put it down lightly.
example: flat on table with something soft under, pick up top area around 1cm and give it a little force pushing it down.
my first 1 was definitely louder than the replacement, i could hear it through the box. my replacement still does it when i place it on my lap or table, but its not as bad.
im pretty sure all of them do it. so if you dont have any of the other issues(dead pixel/QI not working etc) people are mentioning i would just keep it.

Yup I have it the exact same. I was nervous cuz I had it in my backpack (in a sleeve tho) and noticed it after I took it out, but if other ppl have it I'll let it go... Certainly seems like the camera

Hey,buddy.
I am confused about this , i mean , my nexus 7 has the identical issue even it is a very very slight tap...
Is it similar to yours?
not only the camera area but also the upper part of back cover...
it seems to be a normal to make the noise from the camera lens. i wouldnt worry about it too much.
I am still confused why some others have said they dont have the sound tho.
