Slight rattle noise - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Does anyone else have a slight rattle noise coming from the camera area/back corner? You cant really hear it unless you tap on the back of the tablet lightly. My old(2012) nexus doesnt make this sound and not sure if this is normal on the new 1s or not.

i hear a tapping noise when i tap on it.
come on man, do you buy products to find problems? do not make this into the screen lifting issue with the first nexus 7. noone needs you exchanging yours a hundred times taking away possible purchases from other people.

Pretty sure it's normal. Same noise on my Nexus 4.

please dont start star the "screen lift" saga of 2012 with the 2013 model some people look for things wrong.. if you have buyers remorse take it back.

its the camera. you will notice that on a lot of devices with cameras. my Gnex does this, my wifes Droid Razr HD does this as well. my thunderbolt did it too. pretty sure it is something inside the camera housings.
dont tap there. its nothing to worry about.
i swear, the only time i find stuff wrong with my electronics is when OTHER people point them out.

My GNex doesnt make this particular sound, it makes a sound from the cover not being flush with the back tho.
Either way not a big deal, was just wondering if it was normal or not.

ridiculous mentality from some people here. A LOT of users, me included, go to forums like XDA to learn about potential build flaws because some of us actually care about getting quality controlled devices for our money. I actually didn't buy the Nexus 10 because of all the reports, both from forums and in reviews, about the bleeding, and I'm grateful for all those reports.
Just because you'd happily pay for a product with obvious defects and then defend the manufacturer to the bone like it was your employer doesn't mean everyone have that attitude. In the year 2012 gluing a screen to a bezel shouldn't have been a problem.
I'm not saying the OP has discovered a flaw here but any report of potential flaws is appreciated by someone like me and your overly defensive mentality is sad to see. Don't decide for others what a flaw is cause it is highly subjective.

lol, i just took the battery cover off the phone and tapped around, and the rattling got even worse....lol. My new N7 does have the rattling, though I dont think i would have ever noticed it, and I dont think its a defect at all.

i agree with that. its just some times (like the N7 screen lift saga) the defect isn't even noticeable until someone points it out to you.

The volume rocker rattles when I tap it. I've noticed on very smartphone and tablet I've handled pretty much does it as well.

Built like a tank, no issues here.

my volume rocker is solid, definitely seems like its coming from the camera.

Its the camera lenses. Perfectly normal. All cameras do this to some extent.
My galaxy nexus doesn't.... But remember it having a 0 shutter lag. Maybe it has a unique camera or something. Most other cameras click when tapped.

So i did a exchange and the new 1 i got has the same sound. kinda odd that some people are stating they arent getting the noise from the camera...
Anyone else getting the creaking/rattle?

Its the focus lens, lots of devices do this
Sent from my Nexus 7

does anyone else have it as bad as me?
I hear it even if i put if I put it down lightly.
example: flat on table with something soft under, pick up top area around 1cm and give it a little force pushing it down.

my first 1 was definitely louder than the replacement, i could hear it through the box. my replacement still does it when i place it on my lap or table, but its not as bad.
im pretty sure all of them do it. so if you dont have any of the other issues(dead pixel/QI not working etc) people are mentioning i would just keep it.

Yup I have it the exact same. I was nervous cuz I had it in my backpack (in a sleeve tho) and noticed it after I took it out, but if other ppl have it I'll let it go... Certainly seems like the camera

Hey,buddy.
I am confused about this , i mean , my nexus 7 has the identical issue even it is a very very slight tap...
Is it similar to yours?
not only the camera area but also the upper part of back cover...

it seems to be a normal to make the noise from the camera lens. i wouldnt worry about it too much.
I am still confused why some others have said they dont have the sound tho.

Review: Ringke Thunderbolt case

I was contacted to give my thought on this case..and well here they are.
The case is very well made. Its like a rubber build and it feels really good. Its got good grip on it. So good that sometimes i cant take it out of my pants pocket. It doesnt really get to hot even when the phone is hot. It has power and volume buttons build into the case so it makes it easier to lock and unlock the phone,as well as turn up the volume. I really like it. And the price is only 17 bucks. I say its worth it. It fits like a glove and doesnt cover any of the microphones either.

If u have any questions about it, feel free to post them here.

I got a case similar to this that has that same strip underneath the earpiece speaker. I've found it hard to drag down the notification bar when cases have one of these.

I disagree with the notification bar dragging issue. I have the ringke case and think it's fantastic. The feel is a little different than I was expecting, but overall I'm very satisfied. It was only $10 with a coupon I found online.
Yeah i can see where that could be a problem but it hasnt really bothered me.
Again
I have posted this previously:
The strip under the earspeaker covers the light sensor, therefore, while on calls, the screen will not turn off automatically.
I contacted Ringke about this a couple of months ago. They responded right away, and informed me they would look into it. I have never heard back from them since.
I went ahead and cut the piece off. It is structurally useless.
One benefit of keeping the strip might be that the lights on the soft-keys at the bottom of the bolt always stay lit when the screen is on.
Other than that, it is a nice case and fits the bolt well. My only other gripe is that the sides are not as sturdy as on the same case for the itouch.

Yeah im not experiencing this problem either. Maybe it was the first couple runs? idk
I've had my ringke case now since the day I
received my thunderbolt. I've been very
pleased w/ the quality and fitment of it.
I haven't experienced any issues w/ the
strip causing the screen to not turning off.
I contacted support and asked if they would
be producing a similar case to fit the extended
battery but they said no :/ i think if they did
then I would go ahead and jump for the extended
battery.

I worked hard on making that video for you.
And just to let you know, your ad hominem argument is an improper use of the Latin phrase. If you may have noticed, I stated that I have no issues with the screen not turning off and then proceeded to bash you and your Apple fanboy. I wasn't trying to undermine your statement by directly attacking you. My statement simply concluded that I think you're wrong based on my experience with the case.
Regardless, I laugh at you for thinking I work for Ringke or received a free case. Please note, I would never accept a job as a blue-collar worker.

You are quite IMMATURE.
As I previously stated, I am not an apple fanchild. I use an ipod touch as the organization I work for uses apple based products to run their medical software.
Also, if you check the other forums (as I previously informed you), you will see that all of my self-purchased electronics are android based (Xoom, DINC2, OGDROID, Thunderbolt).
Finally, you most certainly did employ ad-hominem. It is a fallacy of relevance. It is any kind of argument that criticizes an idea by pointing something out about the people who hold the idea rather than directly addressing the merits of the idea. As you admitted, you attacked me personally in order to discredit my point about the case, rather than prove your point.
Go back to school, and learn to be respectful and kind to others. Shame on you.

Front camera location!!

Does anyone else notice that the front camera is off. Turn the front facing camera on, do you notice you have to hold your phone off centered just to get your face in the middle?
yeah, i find that kinda annoying as well. poor design choice especially for face unlock.
You make it sound that its hugely off centered
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I would rather they centered the camera above the screen and located the ear speaker off to the side. Then I could look like the world's biggest dork when making a call.
I just tried this for the first time....I'm convinced people like searching for things to annoy them. I had to hold the phone at the ever so slightest angle if I wanted my face perfectly aligned, even if I didn't it wasn't like I was that far off center.
This forum is funny, though it's no different than the iPhone forums. They do the same **** over there, literally dig for things to complain about. Just an observation as an iPhone and Android user.
Is therea phone with center from cam? Most if not all front cams are located off center.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
I find this quite annoying too. How hard is it to get the camera to point straight ahead?!
My iPhone 4 camera is off center, but it centers the face fine. Again, still not a big deal to me as the Nexus isn't that far off center. It works just fine for me and I have another phone that is perfectly centered and it still doesn't bother me.
This drives me crazy too. I thought it to be a manufacturing defect, and will still look into it with Google and Samsung. Don't really understand how they couldn't angle the camera inside the body slightly so that it looks at you when its right in front of you. Just seems weird to point the phone down and to the left a bit to get my face in there, or at my neck when I'm holding it horizontally.
Wow, really? People will find ANYTHING to complain about.
"OH NOEZ!!1 I HAZ TO MOVE DA FONE A BIT TO BE CENTERED!1!1"
Please.

my phone (with a spigen hard case) fall to ground first time, the screen is fine, but I can't power on it anymore...
sent it to LG service, said need 3 days to check what's wrong..
my Nexus 5 fall to ground many times, and working well. and Nexus 5x just one... LG quality now is really bad.
Well, LG might say that user handling of devices nowadays it's very bad.
Hard cases suck for drops. They accept the drop instead of deflecting it like softer ones do. Just my opinion, buy a better case

You don't think anyone dropped their Nexus 5 and it broke too? It's just luck if it breaks or not, as with any phone in a drop.
My 5x fell onto tiled floor with no case or screen protector. Barely even a scuff on two of the corners. Good job LG!
BTW you shouldn't expect a case to help in a drop when it's not designed to help in a drop, isn't advertised to help in a drop, nor was it ever publicly tested in drop tests.
If a case doesn't have these things then it is for scratch protection, minor bumps, and aesthetics only. Don't be fooled by empty marketing promises. It's easy for any case or SP to type some words on their JPEGs "super resilient, shock and explosion proof, 9H hardness" but that doesn't mean it's true or was ever actually tested. They just want your money.
Couldn't the thread have been titled, "First unlucky drop and no power.." or something like that. Ya just gotta throw in the dig of "bad quality LG" as if it's their fault you dropped the phone. I just don't get all these threads that don't really ask questions so much as to get eyeballs on a negative depiction of a very capable phone. And I'm just as guilty, I read this crap.
Me too Bobby. I keep feeding the trolls. I can't help it. I feel bad for them.
Thing is it was happening in the 6P threads too. I had one for about a week until I realized it was just too large a device for me and I was definitely going to drop and break it due to the size and slippery back. "Super lag on the 6P", "awful camera", speakers terrible" things like that just the same as here. Some of them just Sammy fans and some iPhone heads but they came out of the woodwork. And same here, "5X-Hugely disappointed" over 45k views. I mean who goes on just to post something like that instead of taking the time to return the device and research another one? It just makes me wonder motivation.
Back on topic, I dropped my phone once and not a scratch. It was on the carpet, does that count?
The only thing lacking quality in this situation is your grip.
Mine survived a 4 foot drop to concrete.

I have to say -- I always try to assume the best in terms of motivation, and just chalk up someone's different experience to use case, app selection, etc. But my 5X is so fast, and multitasks so well, that I have to question motivation as well.

Lol, jabroni.
As soon as I saw that I knew I had a yinzer on my hands. He's beyond a jabroni, he's a chooch jag off!
I agree no need to do such things, it's a colossal waste.
I actually enjoy his videos. It's not as if he sawing it in half or putting it in a microwave or other stupid things people do. He's actually testing the device. Is it a little more exteme then what normal usage might bring? Yea, but it's nothing way out and I appreciate seeing what exactly my phone can handle and all that, especially compared to other phones.
As for this video, I can't lie and say i wasn't disappointed with how the U12+ did. Especially with seeing how those buttons popped off. And as someone who tears down phones all the time, hearing him question it's water resistance was also a little disconcerting. It's not going to stop me from buying this phone but one of the reasons I like HTC phones are because of the build quality. But seeing this do worse than how other phones faired and hearing his concerns did disappoint me.
And I wouldn't jump all over this guy for what he said about the phone. His videos aren't necessarily pure opinion. While he does give some opinions on how he think a phone will fare in certain conditions, it's all based on his testing and how the phone itself handled it and what he finds in his tear downs. That's all. If you got the U12+ and enjoy, even love it and think it's the best phone ever, then that's all that matters. Don't get too worked up over what others say.

Ya got me n'at. That's my point though, if I'm going to want to see a tear down (which I do, because I want to see what sort of vibration system HTC has employed here), I'll wait for a proper, scientific one from iFixit (who doesn't have one as of yet).

My gripe comes from his methodology and the fact that there are some who are still waiting for their phones. Seeing one destroyed in a non-scientific matter irks me. (Though the screen scratch testing, I have to give props to.) I can't see any day to day use where my device would come into direct contact with open flame or a utility knife.

It is non-scientific, but he does this for all of the new releases. So it's interesting to see how all of the new flagships stack up to one another regarding durability. At least it did better than the U11+ though.
The teardown of the U12+:
I'm a big fan of HTC but I'm no apologist either. That was rough to watch. Things that would normally be so simple to replace on a phone are causing this phone to basically become a paperweight if damaged. At the price they're selling this at, all these "little" things become that much more bigger.

loosening hinge

Is anyone else noticing that the hinge has some play in it when the device is closed.
Should I be worried about this. Only had it a week so could return back to At&t before the 14th day. Wanted to see if anyone else is experiencing the same thing?
I don't have any play in the hinge when closed and I've had the Fold almost a month now. I'd say return it back to AT&T before the return policy and exchange it just for peace of mind and what seems to be a factory defect.
The hinge becomes loose over a period of time, and when closed, the plastic trim around the inner screen creaks. I've gone through 3 folds and they all had this issue.

Did you return it. I still have a few days before my 14 days are up. Thinking of returning it.
Who cares lol.
You think I'm gonna return my $100K Mercedes when the gear shift starts feeling different? No you deal with it. It's a physical part...

What if your check engine light comes on? Just deal with it because it's a light?
As far as the noise, I'm now on my 4th fold and all but the newest one makes the creaking noise. It's the nature of the beast. I don't like something that cost $2k to sound like something that costs a fraction of that, but for now, that's the price to pay. For me, the noise doesn't bother me enough to part with my Fold. There are too many great things about the phone that I'm not willing to give up lol

do you think theres a chance your 4th one doesn't make any noises because of the "1st batch blues" for any tech devices?
maybe possibly you have a 2nd or 3rd batch phone?
thanks for the update though, that loosening hinge was really putting me off from buying the phone.
sucks to see that quality control is still a little random, even after all the delays.
I get a strange noise too when closed thinking of contacting samsung about this in a few days no rush bought of ebay like new no marks £1190 it was either that or the whopping £1,900 from samsung so a good saving with the buds.
