preventing dust intruding from the camerahole

Even if the TP2 is very nice, I got mine last week that stupid camerahole bothers me and the TP1 was the same.
So I taped that hole (look at the picture)
Or does someone else got a better solution for it?

What's the point with the screen protector
I don't want dust in the back of the phone.

Agreed. Having a protector in the lens is only useful if you're planning on jabbing sharp objects through the hole in the back cover.
A much more effective solution is to cover the hole itself, thus preventing the back of the phone from filling up with dust.
Seems like a bit of a weird thing to do on HTCs part, though I can understand it. On my TyTN2 I actually took the back cover off to take photos as the "lens cover" was so obliterated and caked with dust.

Warning TP2 Users Needing A Case!

If you have/get a USA TP2 you will be offered the split hard shell (leather wrapped plastic) case that actually fits and works very well but it has a MAJOR design flaw. Turns out there is a proximity sensor just above and to the right of the letters HTC on the front face (can't see it and don't know how it works) that is used for blanking the screen when in a call. The case TMo will try to sell you covers that sensor and it won't work. I took a 1/2" drill bit and made a hole just to the left and below the hole for the speaker (leaving enough plastic to keep continuity of the frame) and now the sensor works.
I will be calling my local dealer in the morning to make them aware of the problem. This needs to get out because the proximity sensor really works!!!! I wish I had it instead of the light sensor on my Touch HD.
Also make sure that ANY case you buy has that area uncovered.

You can't see it and don't know how it works.. but after your cutting in the case you know it works.. i don't get it

A proximity sensors works by sensing if there is anything in its proximity.

I think I figured out what the OP is talking about. He's referring to a hard plastic shell accessory for the phone. The TP2 has a neat feature of turning off the screen during a call when you put it next to your ear. I wouldn't have noticed it if it weren't for the OP.

Comparing the TP2 to my HD I noticed, before I put the shell on, that screen blanks perfectly during a call when it gets about 1-2" from my face (my HD effectively does not have that feature) and functions much like, dare I say, like the iPhone for the screen blanking. It took me a while to realize the sensor is not near the LED/speaker area but about 1/16" (1-2mm) above and to the right of the letter C from HTC. I initially drilled a hole that was about 1/8" but it was too high and too far left for the sensor to work so I just made the hole larger and now it works perfectly....not pretty put it works. I actually like the hard shell (my wife, not so much since it makes the whole package bulky) and feel that it is providing good protection and good anti-slip properties.
My comment about not knowing how it works is based on the sensor is in a part of the case (phone case, not add-on protective shell case) that can not be seen, no holes, no windows, nothing. It is not infrared and is not visible at all. I guess it could be some kind of ultrasonic emitter/receiver to sense proximity, not sure. Anyone read about how that works?

On the EU version the sensor is to the left of the HTC logo about 1cm to the left of the 'H'.

Great info, thanks. I take it the EU devices have the letters HTC in a place other than just above the top left of the screen?
Question: I am looking on Ebay for another hard/split case like the one I got from my TMo USA dealer and see that some have a hole for the sensor but it appears to be to the right of the speaker. Do the EU devices have the sensor in a different spot?
This is the link I was looking at to buy but the hole is one the wrong side or is it just a picture that has been reversed? Or is that a hole for a front side camera that the USA devices don't have???

My local TMo dealer said they would replace mine so i can drill the hole more accurately but I am still thinking I want to try one from Ebay.

More screen blanking problems
Wow, after some research it looks like no shell/skin type of cases have the cutout for the in-call screen blanking proximity sensor.
If you have a shell/skin for the TP2, can you confirm that feature is/not working?

I can confirm that the sensor does not work when I put my silicon case on. I ordered mine from ebay...there is a thread about silicon cases here. Anyway, I did a test like you did and sure enough, the sensor does not work when I have the case on. When I take the case off, the sensor turns off my screen.

use a hole puncher on a piece of post-it... move that holey post-it over the suspected area... use other palm to simulate your face... move holey paper until screen blanks... and there's your sensor.

tmobile sells the body glove 2 piece snap on case (hard black case) as well as a 2 piece silicone case combo pack with a car chargeer. the silicone case with the car charger actually has an offset hole for the earpiece and proximity sensor unlike the body glove case.
moral of the story...get the tmobile combo pack that has the silicone case as well as the car charger.

Im thinking of getting this phone and so im looking for possible issues but I don't understand why this is a problem. If the phone is in the case, then it would be in proximity to something and it ensures the screen stays off so its not wasting power or getting hot right? Then when its taken out of the case and you bring it out of suspend mode the screen and all turns back on....? what am I missing here?

Hey Gordo,
I am curious. If the prox sensor blanks the screen when it is close to your face, wouldn't you want it to also blank the screen while in the case? That would seem to keep alerts from leaving a live screen and wearing down the batteries. (That happens to me now with my Tilt.) If so, then you do not want a hole in the case?

If you look at my original post I mention that this problem is with the split shell case that is being sold by factory Tmobile retail stores in the USA. Ebay also has a number of 2 piece cases/skins/shells that, without a hole for the sensor, will frustrate people who might not know that the "screen blanking while in call" feature will be rendered unusable. Someone mentioned that it is the Body Glove, hard plastic wrapped in leather, 2 piece case that has one part clip on the display part of the phone and the other part on the back of the keyboard half of the phone. Both halves of the case are intended to remain on the phone. If you are just placing a naked TP2 in, say, a pouch case, then this is not a concern to you and should blank the screen if you are in a call while using a BT headset.

back cover and picture quality

little irritated that i just realized that taking the back cover off my tilt2 made for better quality pictures. and i randomly clean the plastic lens cover on the back cover but pics still come out hazey.
anyone have this issue or tips to clean it?

Is the plastic cover scratched -- like from rubbing against something?

Ironically, I am having the same issue. I was just searching for a solution on here last night. It seems to have just happened within the past week. The cover on mine doesn't seem to be scratched.
I tried cleaning it vigorously with my shirt, but the haze wouldn't go away. A little more "cleaning" today and most of it seems to be gone.
My buddy fixes copiers, so I figured he might have something that will clean it up good. I will work on this tomorrow and see if I can get it cleared up.

nope no scratches or anything. i'm pretty careful with the phone since i paid full no-contract price for it i've done windex and rubbing alcohol via q-tip...but no success.
the drastic difference without the back cover is like going from watching standard tv without contacts to watching HD tv with contacts.

yeah, I noticed the same on my tilt 2. The plastic cover makes the pictures blurry. I ended up just removing the plastic camera piece from the back cover. The camera is recessed, so I don't see the need for a plastic cover. Works much better.

but checked it out...and yep...HUGE difference....
the plastic 'lens cover' looks like a pretty cheap plastic material....
even with the best care and cleaning it will ultimately change....
mine's filthy and scratched a little....
considering popping it out

I popped mine out and it looks a lot better now. The contrast/sharpness is much better without it. The camera is actually pretty decent now, weird that htc ruins the cam by putting these plastic pieces of crap over the lens!

It's not because the lense is dirty, I tried it the same day the TILT2 came out, fresh out of the box. So it's not a dirty lense, i had the same issue with the TILT 1 , its the protective lense cover, it's just cheap and not clear. so you could remove it , some people even drilled a hole in it. It will allow for dust to get under the cover more, but it gets under there anyways, you can blow it out every once in awhile, instead over removing your cover and having people look at you like your retarded.

no prob. figured picture quality was a lens cover issue..went on a hunch. loving the pictures and the phone so much more now

true..i airblow mine once a week at least. dust build up is incredible...pretty much a dust magnet. looks like i'll attempt to drill a hole or take the plastic off completely. picture quality is too d*** good without it

If you are concerned about dust, when removing the clear plastic piece, place a small piece of gaffers or masking tape (with one end curled over) on the hole. This will create a small flap that will prevent dust from entering. When it's time to take a photo just peel back the tape a little.

Also No need to Drill a hole, from the outside push on lense protector inward, and it pops right off, if you decide later, you can put it back on real easy.

i'm gonna keep the plastic off for a couple of days and see how it goes.

side note and another small observation: looks like a slight bad design flaw on HTC's part, for the HTC Tilt 2 if you look at other phones...blackberry, nokia's, and even the HTC Pure..basic keyboardless version of the Tilt2...you can see the lens higher up on the back of the phone. now hold you're phone as you usually would while browsing the web or checking the weather. don't know bout anyone else, but i place my pointing finger along the back of the phone as stable support..unknowingly covering the lens part. that and possible oxidation (the yellow discoloring that occurs on your car's headlights) may lead to the bad quality pictures.

Night and day difference in popping out that cheap plastic lens. WOW, better then my 3.1 digital camera now.

Yeah, I did that on my Kaiser and it was much better. Bought a replacement back cover just for that purpose, but I can't find another cover specifically for the Tilt 2 yet, so I just can't bring myself to do it to this phone yet.

I got my TP2 just one and a half week ago new here in Germany. And there was no plastic lense in the battery cover, just a hole.
But the quality of the camera is more than poor. I had an SE X1 with the same 3.2 MP before it -that was goot quality. The TP2's quality is more than poor compared with the X1. Like 1 MP (TP2) to 3 MP (X1). Even at a good sunny day a picture in a garden is without sharpness at the edges and in the bottom of the front. The camera of the X1 I used more and more often instead of my standard digital camera for same easy pictures and it was ok. But the camera of the TP2 ist unusable compared with the X1

Spiderweb scratches on camera lens after 1 week?

I've only had my Note 3 for a week and already it looks like there are tons of scratches on the camera lens. I already had an Otter Box for the Note 3 when it arrived, so it's been in that it's whole life. I say they are scratches, but they look like some kinda disease on the lens, like spiderwebs or something. I've tried to clean with professional lens cleaner and cloth for my DSLR, and it's just weird. They fade and come back.
The pictures it is taking seem OK, but I don't want to wait too long to do a swap as I bought my phone outright to keep my monthly bill low.
Any ideas?

might it be that you still have the protective covering on the lens? you're supposed to take it off.

I thought that as well. But I took it to the store and they called it some kind of fog on the lens that wasn't normal. They gave me a new phone.

Packaging : its good and safe. Tempered glass placed inside a sterofoam box .
Installation : Now, this is the tricky part, although it has full adhesive, the installation wont go as simple as installing other (ex iPhone) full adhesive TG. It (the adhesive) tends to spread unevenly causing bubble.
The trick is to go from the corner, while keep the other corner floating, press the glass with two or more finger ensuring no bubble appear in the process.
It will take sometimes till you get it right with zero bubble,
But the result is rewarding. It perfectly fit, and can be used with cases as well. I use it with original google fabric case.

I'm guessing this is the same product as HeroShield. Looks the same. My HeroShield should arrive in a few weeks, so we'll see.

Its because although the adhesive on the display area is full, there's lil gap on the edge area where it doesn't have the adhesive, i guess due to the curve, it still not possible to create fully transparent glass protector with full adhesive. I never seen one for popular phone like iphone either. All iphone x glass protector has coloring as well.
The only real transparent protector with full adhesive is whitestone probably, but thats using low viscosity loca to begin with, so its different story, not to mention the skyhigh price.

It doesn't. It have a transparent window with adhesive under . It stick perfectly though, thus no interference to the proximity function. I try make a call and place finger over the sensor, it work normally

Nothing extraordinary regarding the coating i guess. Finger glide nicely just like on original screen. But it collecting fingerprint overtime. (Am one of those guy who have wet hand all the time though, so my experience with fingerprint might be severe than how it should) :silly:

You need to lift it off if you already stick large area of it prior to reposition,
Positioning is quite easy though, the harder part is to push the glass slow and even.

I'd almost be interested, but I try to stay away from protectors that cover the proximity sensor. I know it works sometimes, I've just been bitten by it too many times on phones where it causes issues.

Here's HeroShield's install video. Seems like they include a squeegee with theirs to help with the bubbles.
Mine comes today, so I'll see what it's like too.

Can see from the video that it has glass covering the sensor, so it will be hit or miss. Some will have no issues with the sensor. Others will.
Mine will be here in a few weeks, so I'll see then too.

Hi OP... Are you able to post some picts of the top and bottom edge of the phone? Or a pict that can somehow show the gap of the side of the protector to where it meets the screen. Just curious to see if there is a slight gap as there is no adhesive there. Since I go case less, I am afraid I will always crack the glass because of this gap. Thanks in advance!
