I was hoping someone could help me get things straight in my head before I proceed any further. Currently I am running stock w/root 1.47. The first thing I did was get titanium backup (donate version) and backup my apps and system data. This is where I am at a loss.
I want to be running a lean, fast phone with wifi tethering. Here are my questions:
I installed ROM manager, can this be used to test out different roms without rebooting into my recovery?
Is there a list of apps I can remove? I can use titanium backup to remove them (also, should I remove, pause, or delete?) Specifically I don't want things like sprint nascar, sprint zone, etc.
Will the roms remove my useless apps, or do I need to do it manually? Specifically I was thinking of installing baked snack.
Thanks
ROM manager has an option inside the app to boot you into recovery. No way around trying a new Rom other than going into recovery, wiping, and flashing.
Go to the android chef forum and search 'apps safe to remove' and it should turn up a thread that keeps a list of apps you can use.
Most custom roms, including baked snack, remove bloat apps (mostly Sprint apps)
Awesome, one more thing. I am trying to figure out what to backup using titanium backup. On my stock rom, lets say I have all the apps downloaded that I want to use. Do I want to exclude everything RED on titanium backup and just backup the green programs? When I flash to a new rom and go to titanium backup, if I backed up EVERYTHING and restore it, wouldn't it put the bloatware back on my phone?

is it possible to obtain full root without wiping phone data? all i want to do is remove apps that i dont use...like most of the sprint/htc crap i dont care for a custom rom only want a custom kernel with all tweaks
I don't think it's possible. However, once you do get full root access and nand unlock, you would be able to remove the apps you don't want, set your phone up, and you could do a nand backup.
It can be a pain in the ass, but it's well worth it.

Use the unrevoked method. Then use a backup app like titanium, backup your stuff then go through the root process then restore your backup. There are plenty of guides on how to do this.

Titanium backup has a market doctor feature that links your backed up apps back to the market
Definitely root and use titanium backup. But keep in mind with a custom ROM you are going to lose everything you have. Any apps that store data on sd card will probably be fine.
What I did before I had Titanium Backup was flash custom ROM. Then once booted I make sure things look fine, fully sync to Google, then reboot. When I come back from that I turn on WiFi and go to market and Download section. Any apps I previously downloaded will be in that section waiting for me to download. Download them all at once, DO NOT leave that section before downloading everything again, or you will lose that list.
Once done, open apps and customize to liking. Then download Rom Manager if you don't have it already. Flash clockwork and let it do its thing. Then do a NAND backup from Rom Manager. Once that is done do backup with titanium backup.
Sounds like a lot of work, I know, but you only need to do this once. Then incremental backups with titanium and you are set. It is a lot of time up front but can save a ton of time and headaches down the road. Trust me here.
Is it possible to use ROM Manager if you use Amon_RA's recovery?
I have been thinking about trying out CynMod6, but I dont really want to flash it and wipe again and wimax worries me not being on CynMod6, and from what I have read switching back to what I am running BakedSnacks1.5 is smoother when using Rom Manager.
Some other General Questions:
1 - things that I want to fast boot do I need to be placing them on the root of the phone?
2 - Everyone talks about a Nand Backup, Is doing a Nand Backup on Amon_RA's recovery and then a Titanium Backup and a Backup on App Brain enough for changing to a different ROM? I guess the real question is how should I go about my backup?
I understand the issues with things already being posted but I have been on this forum literally for 2 whole days now and making the effort not to be redundant but if I could just get a few things cleared up it would be a big relief. Search function isnt as helpful as I would like it to be here. Not knocking the forum just saying for Noobs like myself sometimes a question just needs to be asked.
Yes, you can flash either recovery with ROM Manager.
1) What are you talking about? Things you want to be able to flash (ROMs, radios, etc.) should go on the root of your SD card so they will be accessible in recovery.
2) Yes, that's certainly enough. Nandroid (NAND backup) will be a snapshot of your current ROM, Titanium will back up your apps and data, and AppBrain will also remember your apps. Be careful with TB, it can cause problems if you restore all sorts of data between different ROMs, it can break apps and system processes, and it's mostly just too much power for somebody to go blindly batch-restoring.
I always advise flashing from recovery, not ROM Manager (wiping, too), just because it's cleaner. Maybe I'm just OCD.
Now as far as backing up apps, couldn't you just save all the installer .apk's and then reinstall them after you wipe your data the same as backing up your apps using titanium or any program like it. And is something like rom manager really necessary bc from what I'm reading if prefer the"ocd" way of doing a clean reinstall.
Hello. My first post here and I'm hoping someone can help me out. I rooted my Evo with unrevoked and flashed my first rom yesterday. Finding info for rooting and rom installs was easy. However, being a noob at this there are little things I can't seem to find any info on. I flashed Myn's Warm 2.2 using Rom Manager and screwed up the addons right off the bat.It took 2 more flashes for me too realize the reason I kept losing the Launcher Pro theme was because I would batch install my apps with stock LP not realizing I was overwriting the new one. LOL Anybody know of any links with info about building your rom i.e.(addons) after you've flashed it? I'm just tired of reinstalling my apps after each flash. I want to move forward with root but can't for fear of starting all over again.
What you need to do is open up titanium backup, and batch backup all your apps. Periodically backup your launcher settings, adw[ex], lanucher pro, ect. Before you flash, backup your current rom. Once you flash a new rom, all you have to do is go back into titanium backup, batch restore all apps, then restore your launcher settings.
Hi all,
About to root and rom for the first time on any phone and I was wondering a few things.
First, after I install clockwork mod recovery, I can make a backup... Does this backup have the ability to restore all of my apps and data after I install a custom rom? Also, does it restore things like homescreen widgets, app settings etc as well?
Secondly, after I install the rom of my choice, how does updating it to a newer version work? Will updating to a newer version wipe my phone completely or is it like receiving a stock ota update in that it doesn't erase anything?

1) The backups in clockworkmod are of your entire phone. Without a 3rd party app such as titanium you won't be able to restore specific pieces of it. IMO clockworkmod backups are meant to be used to restore your entire phone if something goes wrong. Titanium has a feature where you can restore specific stuff from the backups, but I would recommend creating backups via titanium rather than relying on what was done in clockworkmod. Personally, I backup everything with titanium then do a backup in clockworkmod before I flash a rom. App settings will restore, widgets do but many times you'll have to add them again because they restore with placeholders for whatever reason.
2) Updating a rom is dependent on the specific rom and often the version. Some roms you can just flash over what you're running, sometimes an update will be significant enough to require a wipe. Even if a rom doesn't require a wipe, I'd advise at least doing a backup.
notes/warnings:
I've only tried this going from touchwiz to touchwiz ROMs. works between stock+ root and deodexed+ heavily tweaked.
what's frozen in the current rom stays frozen in the restored ROM and vice-versa.
only tested with the latest CWM backup and RomManager.
Rom Manager has to have Advanced Mode turned on.
let's say you flashed a new ROM, sent a bunch of texts, updated some apps, and added or removed a few. then you decided you want to switch back to a backed up ROM. you'll have to redo the changes and backup your texts...
nope. you can restore the backup and de-select Data and Sd-Ext from the advanced restore options. when the phone boots up you will have all your current user data intact.
as stated above there may be some peculiarities if you have apps or system apps frozen with titanium but that's the only strange behavior I've seen.
enjoy!
