Video and Battery - Desire General

Will be taking a flight over the Summer for Holiday/Vacation - Yippee....
Anyway I was wondering how long could I expect the Desire to last when playing Videos, what factors affect video and Battery use (Codec, Bitrate, AMOLED backlight) and also how long have you guys played video before a fully charged battery gave up?

Obviously you will be in the plane and your phone will be in airplane mode so your radios won't be sipping power all the time... this will add to the power life dramatically anyway.
As for bit rate you have only a few options. It comes down to the compromise of video quality and pixel H/W. You may be able to convert your videos to a lower resolution and save some more juice. I would, if wanting to save battery, also leave the backlight on half brightness as to not compromise the watch-ability.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App

How long has anyone watched videos on their desire - 4hrs, 5hrs, more ?

sounds about right, 4-6 hours i'd say if fully charged with airplane mode on
without airplane mode i'd say about 2-3 hours max

Additionally, it'll depend on the rest of the gazillion phone settings you've chosen too. So there is no fixed number we can give.
Lower brightness, H.264 vids, ACC 44KHz aud, and lower bitrate overall = lower power draw
Lower than fullscreen res (like VGA) also has lower power draw.
128Kbps aud and ~700-1000Kbps vid is the lowest I use.

Actually, I've had 4 to 5 hours out of my Desire with the radios on, and still had some battery to spare. The video was encoded to iPod Touch standards.

How long will the battery last when playing .mp4 files?

I've got a 10 hour flight coming up soon and the in-flight movie selection is just awful. As such, does anyone know if I could get 10 hours mp4 playback out of a fully charged phone when it is is airplane mode?
Many thanks
Spud
I wouldn't like to say that you would definitely get 10hrs out if it, but I'm sure you'll get 5+. I often watch say 2 to 3 hours of video on my Desire at the end of a full day (all radios on etc, medium usage) and then charge up before I go to sleep.
For a long flight though, I would suggest getting an external battery pack or second battery anyway just to be sure.

Dave

How many hrs of movies/music?

Ok, i've heard about the battery performance of desire. I'm planning to get one anyway, but I wonder how many hrs of movies/music can I enjoy before the battery runs out.
Up (until I get some answers).
Nobody watches movies on desire? C'mon!
RockPlayer is not doing very well
On my 3 previous WinMo HTCs, I could watch several movies before the battery was depleted.
I've installed RockPlayer and after 90' of watching the same type of movie files, I lost 60% of a fully charged battery and that is way too much.
I'm going to look around for another player and see how well it does.
After 130 views, at least somebody replied. Thanks man, I really appreciate it. Is that coming from a 100% charge? It seems galaxy s is the way to go for heavy multimedia.. it's the desire however that I want in my pocket.

DivX using Rockplayer is definitely not as battery efficient as H264 - I can get 4/5 hours out of H264 encoded video, with some battery to spare.

Depends really, with the radio turned off I get maybe 4-5 hours maximum.
I watched a XviD movie on my Desire 90 minutes and was at 71% when the movei was over.
Well I have encoded some Tom and Jerry movies and a lot of the pixar stuff, but I encoded it to low mp3 quality.. But the quality is still very good. My son can watch two full dvd movies and I an still on eighty percent..... I use act to watch them. The low quality is extremely battery friendly.....
3G off, Screen Brightness maximum.. 4 hours and used up only 20%! I dont really know but I seem to be getting very good battery life compared to others! I love my Desire!

4h of movies and still on 80%...? Hard to imagine how that could be possible... never saw a phone that would make up to 20h of movie playback...

Woah. Well, he himself wonders why. So, on the average everyone can seem to watch at least 2 movies. Not bad.
Please include your player with your posts
Those that claim > 4 hours of playback, what player do you use?
I use RockPlayer, which I find inferior to the TCPMP player I used on my WinMo phones.
I use ACT for playback and recoded files. The files are recoded on purpose in a low quality (but still very watchable) and during playback I had only 15 to 20 % processor activity. Wich is very low. That's how I get the good numbers.
I suspect that when i play a full 750 MB MP4 my proc would eat a lot more power giving me less playback time. But since they average from 180 to 230 MB in size only, the proc does a lot less processing and thus uses up less juice.......
Well I only have 250-350 mb movies as I convert them to mkv or rmvb cos they take up less space too much music :/

Travel a lot. So watching movies on my Desire is very more or less mandatory.
I am able to run 6-7 hours, but battery after is 10%, just enough to make some calls and be on standby before charging.
And that is now after battery calibration and applying POWERSAVING MODPACK. Maybe placebo, but before I was able to handle max 3.5-4h hours and actually had to buy a spare battery to cope with my travel requirements.
I am using RockPlayer, auto brightness. Playing video without any conversion, just download from torrents unzip and play on phone and only SD videos, no HD (I do believe RockPlayer is not able to handle it).

Am I having a faulty battery?

My hox is three months old and was repaired once one month ago by htc dur to screen flickering issue. They changed my device's battery and main board based on the repair report given by them.
Right now I can only get around 2 to two and a half hours of screen on time with one full charge. I'm on stock Rom and the device is never rooted. Very light user thus not installing more than 15 apps on my phone. Not sure what is the reason the battery drains that fast. I did have notification on for whatsapp and a few social media apps but don't think less than three hours usage is what I should get.

2 1/2h is pretty good
What is your display brightness level set to?
I usualy set my brightness to 30% for daylight/indoor use, minimum level at night and max level only when i cant see bcause of bright sunlight.
The HOX display use approx 50-70% of battery capacity depending of brithness settings. see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1579392&highlight=battery+optimization
A lot can be done to save some juice: try to lower your brightness, your screen timeout, turn off wifi when in sleep mode, smart sync your apps........ search this forum for more tips.
You can also see your battery health by downloading Battery solo widget on google market and double-tap the widget.
hope this helped

HTC One V battery draining too fast?

Hey, I bought the HTC One V about a month ago from Amazon (unlocked) and I looked up recently that the battery is supposed to hold up a maximum of two days, unfortunately, mine holds for barely a day (about 10 hours) most of the time the phone is just sitting on my table with his screen locked, but for two-three hours I play games such as Dead Space, Anomaly Warzone HD (Or whatever it's called) and so on, not your typical "angry birds gamer", a little web browsing here and a quick overview of the Play Store. So I would like to know if my battery is in fact a defect, maybe these games are just super power consuming due to the fact that the One V has to struggle to make them work properly because of his slow hardware, Or maybe I'm just missing something,
My Wifi is almost always off by the way, I'm using my data plan for 90% of internet related stuff, brightness is always on auto, and gps, bluetooth and all that are 99% of the day are off as well.
Thanks in advance!
Nope, theres wrong with it.

Ah, ok then,good to know.
thank you very much!
Dont use auto brightness,it consumes more power that way cause of sensor usage, just keep the widget on home screen and adjust it as per needs, lees brightness means less power.
Wifi actualy consumes less power(if you have decent steady signal) then mobile data.
And yea,games eats battery.
When you get root, flash the custom kernel and do not overclock, just use it for setting governor smartass v2...
Remember..battery life is always depending on user, and few settings.
There are few more things, but you will find out you self.
Most likely your battery drains while you're playing games. I always turn on my wifi and autosync in my house and work place. playing drag racing online for about 2 hours, phone calling etc. My phone lasts for 19 hours

and you will be back to nokia 3310.
seriously, you have a smartphone, use it like one!
don't turn off all the things and make it dumb phone. i use autobrightness because it is better when you are outdoor and autobrightness is dimming your screen when it is night or you are in your house with no light, the phone will become less brightness and that's a good thing for battery. widgets are indeed consuming power but if you set the governor to lionheart / smartass v2, that should be ok.

How's your wifi and 3g signal? Do you always get at least 4 bars? You can try tips from Iceb0x to find governor that match your habbit. Browsing with poor wifi/3g signal will drain your battery even faster. I only have few apps running on the background though. twitter, whatsapp, gmail, yahoo, weather, xda, and play sore I guess.

Let's see... I flash like 10 or maybe 15 CM10 test builds per day, my battery lasts 1 and a half day.
On normal usage, wifi, mostly calls, sms, little gaming - it lasts 2 days and a half... +- 1-2 hours.

uninstalled all useless system and user apps. added play services in doze mode. reduced background activity and background data on all user and system apps.
using 1890x3360 resolution (to fix touch issues).
Im on oreo (.51) with storms DRM Fix/kernel, I used serajrs debloat script to get rid of all the useless apps, 8.45 hours with 13% left, this phone is a beast! Mobile data all day, stamina on performance, some YouTube, lots of browsing, telegram msg's, couldnt ask for better.

Hi,
My device isn't rooted and this is what I do to get the most out of the battery...
1. I try to never allow the battery to get hot in order to prolong its excellent performance. If you're charging your phone, don't run heavy draining apps as this will greatly increase the battery's temperature. When charging my phone, I usually set stamina mode to always on and if I'm not expecting important phone calls I sometimes activate airplane mode. If you want to make and receive calls just turn off Bluetooth, wife, data and GPS while the phone is plugged in to keep the battery temperature down.
2. I used to love the Juice Defender app which was able to automatically turn off Wife/Data whenever the screen is off but sadly it hasn't been updated in so many years. Now I just manually turn off WiFi and Data whenever the phone is not in use.
3. If you're watching an offline film or reading a book, turn off your WiFi and Data. Again, if you're not looking to make calls activate Airplane Mode as this tends to lessen the battery drain especially when watching 4k movies.
4. Delete any apps that you don't use. Especially the power hungry apps!
5. I only tend to set brightness to the lowest setting when I'm in a very dark room. There's no point in always having it so low in broad daylight like a disorientated cave-dweller.
6. When you go to bed, activate stamina mode (if you want to save more juice then also activate Airplane Mode) and just make sure that it won't affect your alarm in the morning. ?
That's pretty much it for me I guess. Rooting voids the warranty and that's not something I want to do so I'm happy with my current usage and performance.
Hope this helps!

By the way, root seems to improve a lot the phone, but I have Amazon warranty and would be a shame to lose it for rooting the phone

Yes that's one of the reasons why I'm not too keen on rooting. Rooting the device will also cause some issues that currently have no fix available so I'm good for now.
I can capture excellent stills and beautiful 4k footage. I get around 9-10 hours of screen on time with moderate to heavy use. Everything works as it should so I'm very happy with that.
3.5 hrs loosing 40%
I think for normal daily usage xzp got between 7-8 hrs
The seco d day reached [email protected]% of battery
Well, by my own experience, going out to work at 7:00, getting home at about 18:30 (plus commuting, as I was doing it in the bus too), I was reading an EPUB the whole day (Moon Reader+), black background with white text, the app prevents the screen from turning off, and I hardly had any reason besides lunch break to turn it off, I noticed I had forgotten the cable at the end of lunch break and took out brightness to about 35%, enough to be readable for me, it was on auto until them, no stamina mode either.
I got home with about 40% of battery left. I was quite surprised with my results.
Can get more than 20 hrs of SOT now
Look @The screenshoti taked after long day
5.5 hrs of SOT and 47% battery remaning
I get an average of 6 1/2 hours SOT with heavy gaming and brightness set to around 30%
Otherwise 2-3 days standby with medium to little use. I am impressed.
Ps. When gaming, is the screen running in 1080P or 4k?? How can we tell?

Thanks for clearing that. This means that we only get 4k when viewing 4k movies? However, by default we are getting 1080p which includes gaming.
It would be nice if we could run games in 4k. Why have a 4k screen which is only running 1080P?
Same as buying a 4k TV/Monitor and gaming at 1080P. :crying:
At least we should have an option to change resolution like a PC when gaming, would make sense.Even gaming at 1440P would look amazing. Some games have visible jagged edges which would be eliminated if running at resolutions higher than 1080P...
