Download and flash ROM all from phone? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

How can I go about downloading a Rom and put it on the SD card so I can flash a new one without having to go on my pc?

Bump.

Just go the dev section in the web browser and click on the download link in the thread for the ROM you are looking for. It will download it to /sdcard/download/ copy that with a file explorer to the root of the sdcard reboot into recovery. Nandroid backup and flash away. That's what I do anyway

you have to browse to wherever you downloaded it. first download a file explorer or if your on a stock rom my files and search for it. once you find it remember the path that got your there. now boot into recovery and follow the same path.

flashing apps

When I put my backed up apps into a zip folder and try to flash it it says faild to flash and blah blah......and when i try to put it inside the rom like system-app it dosent flash my apps just the ones I didn't put in
Any advice

What did you use to back the apps up?
App backup & restore
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium
You have to use the app to restore your backed up apps. Not flash them...
I used the app to backup my apps than I took those backed up apps and put them inside a. Zip folder or a rom like cyanogenmod inside the system-apps after that I put the zip file on my sdcard and rebbot to recovery when I try to flash it says error

Again, You have to use the app to restore your backed up apps. Not flash them...

Whatever app you used to back them up with is what you use to resore them. As far as installing things via recovery, you can't just throw a bunch of apps into a zip file, you need to script things accordingly as well. If you're wanting to go that route, for whatever reason, look into how to create an update.zip

Uninstalling zips

If I flash a zip on my phone and I don't like it or it doesn't work, is there anyway I can just remove with out reflashing
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA
That is why you make a nandroid backup. You can't just undo flashing something
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
Only way to uninstall zips is to plug your phone into your computer and find the zip file and hit delete but it is best to always check the ROM out before you back it up get it set up the way you like then back it up but always back up your stock ROM that way you can go back to it

That doesn't uninstall anything, it just deletes it off your sd card. Like the other guy said, Do a nandroid before you flash anything because flashes can't be undone. you can flash over it but you can't undo a flash.
That's basically what I was saying
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
Not even lol. Deleting the .zip file is the file itself, it's already flashed to the phone. You could boot with no SD and still have your.zip flashed. Basically, you have to reflash the rom if you don't have a backup.

Haha that's nothing like u were saying bro lmao
@OP
Open the zip,
find the files it modifies inside system folder
Open ur roms zip file with 7z or similar
Find the needed files
Replace into zip overwriting with the originals ofc, follow the layout.
Put on SD
boot to CWM
Disable signatures
Flash zip
Clear cache/fix permissions if necessary, you haven't described what your flashing..
Reboot.
Done.
But if you don't make a backup of it and restore it's still on there?

If it ads files then yes technicly but by replacing the main files it wont be initiating only as the otigionals.. u can delete extras with a delete command in updater-script..
And yet again u didn't specify what you were "restoring"
Guess I need to be more specific lmao

Yes you can remove by deleting apk just like copying apk will install (as long as it is folder you have write access to and you restart the phone).
Also keeping a copy of any apk will allow reinstall later just enable non market sources in settings use file browser select apk for install while running OS and it does not require a restart to use the app by the way). You have to use app such as titanium backup to backup your apps settings and data though.
You can also un/install using adb
Adb install blah.apk
(Google for options)
As well. Just like if you copy apks in to a ROM zip (right directories don't just drop in root; Google if needed) before flash they will also install when ROM zip is flashed (may need to re-sign but these days that usually is not required).

Custom recovery after ExynosAbuse

I have rooted my N7105 (Orange UK) successfully using ExynosAbuse. Now I would like to install a custom recovery without using a PC.
I can imagine doing this using Rom Manager, MobileOdin or GooManager, using some version of twrp or cwm.
Has anyone here done that, and what did you use?
Sent from my GT-N7105 using xda app-developers app
You can use Mobile odin
First copy CWM recovery in tar (or get recovery.img from zip) to SD card
Open Mobile odin-recovery-select file you have copied and flash

Never tried this way, anyway thanks
I always use Mobile Odin Pro to flash custom recovery. It's easy and can done without PC (Just need to copy the custom recovery zip file to SD/internal storage to flash)
Great, thanks will try this. Any particular recovery that is known to work well with the N7105?

I think chenglu 's recovery working fine.

I downloaded a rom and its in es file folder when boot into recovery I cant find the rom nowhere.I had no problems with finding roms using 4 ext touch anyone know where the rom is at in clockmod recovery this is driving me crazy lol
Sent from my SGH-M919 using xda app-developers app
Try putting it on the root of your SD card and make sure you are looking in extSdCard.
I cant find a wipe for dalvic like on 4 ext touch.so basically when installing a new rom just wipe everything except sd card then flash rom then wipe partition and then reboot.
Sent from my SGH-M919 using xda app-developers app
If I cant find the rom that I want to flash on my sd card where else in recovery do I look for it at?where can it be I cant find it nowhere I new to clockmod recovery any help will be gteatly appreciated.

Your not extracting the zips are u? Do not extract the zip file. Then put the zip file on your sd card and boot into recovery. Then apply zip from ext card. But first go into advance options on cwm and wipe dalvic cache, wipe etc. Etc

When I go into recovery it has apply/sdcard/update.zip do I go ahead and flash this?whats in this update?I cant find ext card anywhere Im trying to find the rom I downloaded gor I can flash it.please could someone help me out.

In recovery select 'install zip from SD card'. At the next screen select 'choose zip from external SD card' if that's where you put it. If you select 'choose zip from SD card' it will look in the internal storage.
Hey it on my device storage how do I get to it through recovery or hoe do I move the rom from device storage to my sd card.
Sent from my SGH-M919 using xda app-developers app
If is on your phone, select install zip from SD card then select choose zip from SD card and then go to wherever you saved it. If you want to move it to your external SD card, plug phone to your computer and move it to /extsdcard. Then in recovery select install zip from SD card and then select install zip from external SD card. What is the link to what you downloaded that you can't find?
Hey I just found the rom and I downloadrd it then I wipe dalvic and cache partition and then I rebooted my phone and my stock factory rom is still on my phone what did I do wrong.

You want select the option that doesn't flash the stock recovery if you want to keep flashing ROMs/kernels etc.
