Quick question about recovery - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I rooted my evo with new simpleroot OTA edition from jiqqaman. Everything worked fine, but I noticed my recovery build said "not set" at the bottom left(using ra).
I got rid of the flash_image and other files used to flash. I tried flashing it through fastboot, and now when ever I plug my phone into my pc it just boot looops to no end.
Here's the question, would it be possible to flash from one of the terminal emulator apps?
I was thinking maybe I could download the amons ra_rec on my phone along with a new flash_image file and run the cat, chmod, etc. commands through that...
Thoughts?

I am quite sure you can

That was almost too easy to fix, without even using a pc. Having root owns.
Not sure if I can plug into the pc or not though, hehe. Haven't checked yet.

No you need a PC. My suggestion is yo get a hold of a PC and use.Odin yo flash to stock. What did you do to your phone?

If you have a pc, use the one-click cwm3. If you don't have a pc, but have root you can manually install cwm3 from a command line on your phone. Instructions have been posted several times in the last month, so search for them.

I JUST GOT THE PHONE YESTERDAY I updated to 2.2 with the we upgrade tool turn rooted with the oneclick root but it gave me the the 2.5recovery instead of the 3.0 I just downloaded syndicate frozen it flashed ok then got caught in a boot loop then tried to restored restored ok but when booting back it just kept going into recovery..... I wasn't paynattn that it was extra 4 I think that's were I mesed up I did do a full back before also and I have experience doing this I had a moment then a hero now I got an epic

Ok need a lil help I think I messed up

Ok so after a few unsucesfull attempts to root with one click. I tried the gingerbreak no pc method. Root went fine it seemed and I have super user and root access. Ok so I installed rom manager and tried to flash clockwork 2.5.1.0 so I go to rom manager, choose flash rom, go to clockmod 2.5.1.0.zip hit ok and all that eventually it reboots into clockwork. But the only options are: reboot, flash update.zip, factory reset, and clear partition. So I chose the update zip one. It failed said it couldn't find updaten.zip so I tried that a few times no luck reboted and tried again..no luck so I went through 3 b utton push thing on a reset and clockwork doesn't open. I have to go through rom manager and when I do those are the only 3 options. Also when in clockwork. The camera button is not the ok/enter button as it should be I have to hit the home key for ok. So I tried to flash the fix for 5the home screen. Same issues. Where di I go wrong? How do I get going again? The phone works fine, wifi teather is working now. Just can't seem to get clockwork working or flash anything

Okay, a few things first:
1. Narrow down your problem, your description is far from clear and concise
2. If you're having problems with ClockWorkMod, search their threads for your answers, or post your question there
3. Why are you using Gingerbreak? That's for, Gingerbread. You shouldn't be messing with a leaked and buggy Rom if you don't know what you're doing.
My suggestion is to go to the Clockworkmod thread. Check out version 3 in my signature. All your problems are likely answered there. But I can't answer them for you, regardless, because you neglected to mention why you resorted to this frazzled method. If you want to pursue this method, you'll have to go back to the forum you got it from for your answers, but I recommend starting over.
GOOGLE any question you have with "XDA" in the search bar and I promise that your question has already been answered.
Well I tried to do one click 4 times and could never root. I fund this gingerbreak method in the samsung epic 4g dev area. I ran it and I have root. I had no other idea what to do at the time to gain root. I have rea through the clockwork area but none of the help answerd seemed to have the same issues as me. Sorry. Ill keep reading. The reason the One Click didn't work is because you didn't turn off your AV and it kept deleting the single most important part of it.

A couple dumb questions:
1. Is your computer detecting your phone?
You may have a cable problem.
2. Is your phone properly recognized?
You likely haven't installed the drivers listed on the OneClick page for 32 bit and 64 bit computers.
3. Have you attempted to Odin back to stock?
In the first line of my signature you will see a link to Syndicate Rom Frozen and CWM Odin. Download that rom to your phone. Then follow the other link and download the EB13 pre-rooted with CWM 3.0.0.6. Odin the necessary files as the page tells you to, then boot into CWM, and flash Syndicate Rom Frozen. Follow all directions where applicable. When your phone is happy, shutdown properly. Three finger boot into CWM. Backup your phone, and then RESTORE that backup immediately. Journaling will be on. You will be happy. Any future problems from there will have been answered in the Syndicate thread.
Edit: I see k0nane beat me to the punch! I still recommend following the directions as I laid out above, this should be an easier fool-proof process for you. Otherwise, I yield to k0nane's expertise.
Don't use ROM manager. It is very buggy with the Epic.

Very true, but the directions for Gingerbreak actually told him to use it for this computer-less root method.
Thanks for all the help so far. So what's better than rom manager?
Is there a way to just install clockwork right now? I am not wanting a custom rom or anything else. The only reason I am rooting at all is to fix the lock screen date.
If I could just install clockwork from where I am at now that would be helpfull.
Id like to keep all my settings and apps n such just as they are I finaly have this thing kinda doing what I want I really don't wana mess with it too much more.
Thanks for all the help so far.
My biggest issue with rooting so far has been my lack of access to a computer that I can use to do the roting. I get pc access but getting access to one I can download to doesn't happen often
Thanks again

I have the same issue, I actually downloaded CWM, Roms, and everything to my phone and then loaded them to my work computer. Use dolphin mini if the default browser gives you issues downloading.
Syndicate has a flash-able fix for the date, is that what you want to apply? I just put it on for the hell of it, but I have to tell you, after May, you won't see a problem with any other month. If that's your only reason for rooting, you may just want to stick it out for this month, just saying.
Yeah that's really the only reason I'm rooting.
Thanks for all the help!

Lost clockwork mod, don't know what to do....

To start things off, let me just say that I just installed the stock eh17 rom and put the AIO mod on top of it and this is the best looking and most stable that my phone has been since making the leap to gingerbread. However....the AIO mod wiped out CWM recovery for some reason and reverted me to stock. As far as I can tell I'm still rooted, I did the terminal test, I have SU, and wireless tether for root users which works fine....but no CWM.
Now I know most would say just odin it back but here in lies my second problem which probably deserves a thread of its own but ties in with this one. My pc just up and stopped recognizing my epic. I have 3 different cables two crap samsung and a better one, none of which work in ANY of my ports. I just odin'd EH06 like a week ago, but still I have tried updating my drivers with no avail. My device manager does not recognize or list my android device at all, I have uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled them, I have rebooted both devices several times and still get nothin. The only thing that I remember chaning between when it worked and when it didn't was I flashed an ext4 rom...could that be it? I've tried going back and it still doesn't work....
Anywa...deep breath...my main question is, is there a way to get CWM back on a rooted, deodexed, supuer user granted phone? Or am I screwed in that department? I guess on the bright side if I can't mod my phone anymore, at least its stable and looks good.....

Sometimes you can have 2 recoveries at one time. Have you tried 3 finger boot and rom manager to get into recovery?

Just run one click root again

So what do you get when you three finger into recovery? Stock recovery?
I get stock recovery and I have tried rom manager to no avail.....I also tried downloading it and running it as a update zip but it said the signatures were bad...

Yeah, you can only use signed update.zips. If no computer recognizes your phone then nothing will get CWM recovery back on. ADB needs to see your phone. if you have done the whole different cables, different ports, new drivers thing then you are mostly screwed. There is an EH17 Update.zip in development you can try.

Hey, try running the Samsung 1.3.08 driver pack in XP Service Pack 3 Compatibility Mode (via Rclick>Properties over the msi or exe file in Win7). Once installed just close. Then go to the [Guide] [Recovery] [Heimdall] Clockwork Mod 3.1.0.1 Purple Heimdall Epic thread here in Epic Android Development section.. Down and install Heimdall and run the driver pack (you may have to run PDANet as well). This is only the only way I can get reconnected in DL mode once my drivers go bat-****, which for some reason they do about every 6 weeks.
And after Heimdall recognizes your Epic, you can just shut it down and use Odin for your tar-balling fix if that is your fancy because after that Odin will COM your Epic again as well.
PM me if you need help on this, I am up till 2am most nights
If you are still on GB, only flash the recovery. Otherwise you are safe to flah kernel as well.
As far as all the driver crap
Heimdall has it's own driver pack to install. And is more robust. You will be able to install just the recovery this way. I used it to swap out Bonsai recovery with CWM 3.1.0.1.

[Q] Evo is S-Off, but acts like it is not rooted.

A friend of mine has the EVO 4G. I rooted it for him last fall. I was trying to help him/teach him do stuff on his own and install a custom ROM the other day when we realized he didn't have a recovery on his phone any longer, or at least not able to access it, the screen went to a picture of a cell phone with a red triangle with an explanation point in the middle of it. When I rooted it, I installed Amon_ra and know for a fact it was there. We couldn't get to it from the h-boot menu or from ROM-Manager. I even tried to have ROM Manager go ahead and flash Clockwork-mod, but it said it couldn't get permission and the superuser permission never prompted like it should have. Wireless tether has also stopped working and it never prompted for a superuser request either. After talking about it, a few days ago we think he may have downloaded the Sprint update his phone has been prompting him for. He said he pulled his notification bar down to clear a notification out and a while later his phone suddenly rebooted and his phone hadn't prompted him since.
Booting his phone into H-Boot his phone still shows S-Off. It is showing h-boot version 6.16.1002 and radio version 2.15.00.0808
I'm not sure on the h-boot version, but I'm fairly certain the radio version is still an older version. So if I had to guess, the Sprint update didn't actually take, but for some reason it did something to knock out the recovery.
Anyone have any ideas? We'd like to get it to where we can get the radio's updated and then install a custom ROM such as Energy. Then get his wireless tether back going. One thing I have not tried is installing the recovery via the h-boot menu. At this point, I have been out of an Original EVO for about a year, so I thought I had better ask before I do too much.
I've spent the past couple days searching, so either I'm not entering the right key words or no one else has had this happen. I'm very good at hitting the thanks button for good answers! :good:

Having s-off does not mean you have root access. All you have to do is reflash the recovery through hboot and flash the super user.zip located at Androidsu.com under super user tab.

If they are on stock ota installing su from market may not work, reflash recovery thru hboot, then install su and su-bin thru recovery. Its easier and guaranteed to work

He said he wanted recovery to flash roms anyway, so might as well kill 2 birds with one stone, and just get su with 100% success on the first try instead of fighting with su from the market, personally I use super su pro and the su elite so I can unroot with a check box for some of tge sstupid no root allowed apps

Make sure to flash the matching su-bin.zip from androidsu.com too should use su-efghi and su-bin-efghi that way your binary is up to date so you don't get errors on updated apps

What did I do wrong?

I know the phone is screwed. This is to get info so it doesn't happen on the next one I have coming. I haven't been able to find anything on what EXACTLY my issue is. I was flashing gf's S3 in ADB with CWM touch for her phone (same file I used). Terminal emulator kept crashing (which is what I used for mine) so that is why I chose ADB. Her phone is a stock S3 rooted.
Here is what I typed and what happened.
adb shell
su
dd if=/sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18 (looked as though everything went fine after)
exit
exit
exit
I then held the buttons for recovery until the phone restarted and viola, nothing. It is detected as DLOAD when I put on QPST and it comes up the same way any other bricked S3 is reported to work. I'm wondering what I did here so that I DON'T do it again. I want to flash this version of recovery and proceed to install all of what I use on my phone, but I need to flash the stupid recovery first! I did flash the odin file for CWM, but it seems to be too old or something because none of the roms I flash on my own S3 with the latest touch seem to work. Any help is greatly appreciated here and sorry for looking like an idiot. I do apologize if this already exists, but I searched for a while and couldn't come to a conclusion as to what I did wrong.
Wait. Please don't tell me I did this because instead of exiting I needed to reboot recovery as a command...
i dont think that shpuld matter you should still be able to access recovery via the key combo as long as it flashed correctly
That's what I thought. I even found a video of the EXACT same procedure done except they rebooted recovery instead of exiting ADB with a command. The only logical explanation for this as far as I can tell is that the file I had was corrupt in one way or another.

Got the replacement and flashed with ROM Manager. Buying premium soon to do touch version. I flashed my own S3 using the same steps in ADB and it worked. I'm just glad we got a new one cause this is my girlfriends, not mine. Thanks for all the tips everyone!
You don't need to buy premium ROM manager to get the touch. Download ROM tool box then open ROM management >tools >flash recovery it's right there free
