To start things off, let me just say that I just installed the stock eh17 rom and put the AIO mod on top of it and this is the best looking and most stable that my phone has been since making the leap to gingerbread. However....the AIO mod wiped out CWM recovery for some reason and reverted me to stock. As far as I can tell I'm still rooted, I did the terminal test, I have SU, and wireless tether for root users which works fine....but no CWM.
Now I know most would say just odin it back but here in lies my second problem which probably deserves a thread of its own but ties in with this one. My pc just up and stopped recognizing my epic. I have 3 different cables two crap samsung and a better one, none of which work in ANY of my ports. I just odin'd EH06 like a week ago, but still I have tried updating my drivers with no avail. My device manager does not recognize or list my android device at all, I have uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled them, I have rebooted both devices several times and still get nothin. The only thing that I remember chaning between when it worked and when it didn't was I flashed an ext4 rom...could that be it? I've tried going back and it still doesn't work....
Anywa...deep breath...my main question is, is there a way to get CWM back on a rooted, deodexed, supuer user granted phone? Or am I screwed in that department? I guess on the bright side if I can't mod my phone anymore, at least its stable and looks good.....

Sometimes you can have 2 recoveries at one time. Have you tried 3 finger boot and rom manager to get into recovery?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
Just run one click root again
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
So what do you get when you three finger into recovery? Stock recovery?
I get stock recovery and I have tried rom manager to no avail.....I also tried downloading it and running it as a update zip but it said the signatures were bad...

Yeah, you can only use signed update.zips. If no computer recognizes your phone then nothing will get CWM recovery back on. ADB needs to see your phone. if you have done the whole different cables, different ports, new drivers thing then you are mostly screwed. There is an EH17 Update.zip in development you can try.

Hey, try running the Samsung 1.3.08 driver pack in XP Service Pack 3 Compatibility Mode (via Rclick>Properties over the msi or exe file in Win7). Once installed just close. Then go to the [Guide] [Recovery] [Heimdall] Clockwork Mod 3.1.0.1 Purple Heimdall Epic thread here in Epic Android Development section.. Down and install Heimdall and run the driver pack (you may have to run PDANet as well). This is only the only way I can get reconnected in DL mode once my drivers go bat-****, which for some reason they do about every 6 weeks.
And after Heimdall recognizes your Epic, you can just shut it down and use Odin for your tar-balling fix if that is your fancy because after that Odin will COM your Epic again as well.
PM me if you need help on this, I am up till 2am most nights
If you are still on GB, only flash the recovery. Otherwise you are safe to flah kernel as well.
As far as all the driver crap
Heimdall has it's own driver pack to install. And is more robust. You will be able to install just the recovery this way. I used it to swap out Bonsai recovery with CWM 3.1.0.1.

As the title suggests....yeh..
Originally I went back to stock di18, no root...then had the bright idea to use the stock recovery reinstaller in the all-in-one (thinking that maybe the update.zip would require it lol).
Decided I wanted to try a full reinstall of eb13 from dameons thread afterwards to see if some bugs would disappear...but..
Like I said, one click fails. The one click root/cwm gives me superuser (but I have my suspicions its not working correctly: using adb shell, then typing "su" yields a "no permissions" error) but fails cwm...AND the one click CWM standalone fails miserably.
The error messages given basically say a couple of the directories that need to be remounted to read-write CANNOT be remounted....????
...which leads me to believe (again) the root didn't take fully, since it can't get those permissions...
Help!!!!

Yeah user error
I used the all-in-one tool that is stickied over on sdx....
I think the root/cwm that is in it is an old version
Once I downloaded 2.5.5 it worked fine...
Which is weird, tho, because the version in the all-in-one was tested to work for froyo
Sent from my baked and emotionless SPH-D700
I had that same problem. I used tha one click root 3.0 CWM & when I put it in recovery it wouldn't reboot. Then I installed odin & tried 2.5.5 & it didn't load in recovey mode like how version 3.0 did. So now I can't root my phone, can't get no ROMs. Wats worse I'm still on Andriod 2.1. If any 1 could give me some ideas let me know. I wouldn't advise a samsung phone 2 no 1. Every 1 else in different countries already have tha update except 4 us. IT SUCKS!!!!!
Just recently running eg22 gingerbread leak, everything is working perfect but now I want to update my modem currently on (eco5). Everytime I go into download mode it doesn't read in odin for some reason?..does anybody have a ideal or possible solution because I really want to upgrade it!

Try another usb cable. Try re installing drivers
Odin mostly only works in the same usb port you installed the drivers on. Try each port, uninstall/reinstall the drivers and reboot, get a better cable. Also search. There is already about a hundred threads exactly like this.

Been having issues with my laptop, running Win7. This is the laptop I have loaded every ROM since I started tweaking my device.
Lately I have had to uninstall my device from the device manager, go into download mode and plug in the USB, then do a scan for new hardware in device manager. Odin will then recognize the phone and I can run.
Yes I understand that but everyone has different ways on how theirs wa reslove every bit on if helps. Mind works fine when phone on,in download mode it says device malfunction and tryed with 3 different cables(shrug) :/

Make sure you do a proper shut down, I have NEVER had issues with odin til eg22. I practically shat myself trying multiple computers that I know worked but to no avail. All my computers said device malfunctioned. I reinstalled drivers but nothing worked.
The problem was I had pulled the battery while in clockworkmod and went into download mode. I reproduced this later it does not recognize if you pull battery from cwm on eg22.
The solution was as easy as going into cwm doing a backup/wipe and install a fresh srf 1.2 and booting it up then proper shutdown and go into download mode and BAM it recognizes. Hope this works

Always is drivers and cables.
I would give the following option (and this is only if your comfortable):
Try installing a VM software, for example virtualbox (http://www.virtualbox.org), install a fresh copy of Windows XP, Vista or 7 (what ever you have a license for) and start fresh from there to:
- Install Epic Drivers (Reboot VM)
- Install phone drivers (connect the usb cable while phone is on and with usb debugging is checked and let it install, then reboot the VM)
- Place the phone in download mode and connect it to the VM, let the drivers install.
Load odin, image files and pit to the VM and proceed to do the download from there, it should work unless something is really wrong with your phone.
Let us know if this helps.

Heimdall is much better for recognizing your device and loads it's own drivers. You need to use 7zip to disassemble the tar files into seperate components and place them in their appropriate spots. I heard the newer version can use the full tar. Haven't checked it out yet. The best thing is you can install another recovery and modem when flashing.
Please, tell me I didn't brick my device on the first night by following instructions to the T...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1562042
1) installed Odin
2) connected phone to PC thru USB
3) rebooted PC and did a turn-off->battery-pull on device. Booted device into Odin mode, started Odin on windows in Admin mode.
4) Odin found device, loaded FC22 ROM + ROOT on PDA button.
5) flash reported as successful, phone went to reboot
6) 20+ minutes later, phone still on Samsung GALAXY S II screen.
7) pulled battery, turned on, see item 6 above, lol. -_-
I can still boot into Odin mode, but since I've proven that I don't know what I'm doing as far as flashing new ROMs goes,... can someone tell me what to do next?
At this point I'd just like a working phone again, whether new ROM or original... But I'd like to make sure I do it correctly and don't run into this again!
EDIT
Flashed "FD26 rooted nodata" over the FC22 I tried, and everything works fine now. Sorry to clutter teh forumz. -.-
First off, why flash a month+ old rom when you could have flashed the couple days old FE22? Anyways, did you perhaps leave the "force reset time" box checked in Odin? Only auto reboot should be checked. Either way, glad to see you got your phone working. Just make sure to be extra careful when touching ICS.

it could be that the rom didnt come with a ics kernel. gb kernels cant boot ics roms. therefore freez at boot logo. simply by flashing a suitable ics kernel would fix that issue.

Anyone seen this before? Any suggestions to resolve? Trying to avoid ICS and my 6 hour battery life, but I'd like some flexibility...
What rom and kernel combo are you using? If both your rom and kernel are based on the same android os (gingerbread, ics, jelly bean) it should boot. If you have an ics rom with a gb kernel it won't boot. If you have a safe recovery installed try mounting usb storage and transferring a rom to your sd card to flash again...otherwise just do an odin oc that'll sort you out.

I'm having an issue with my t989 that has persisted since I stopped using Kang's ROMs and the Bullet Kernel.
After going from the Juggernaut ROM to Darkside's ICS when it came out, my phone started to not be recognized by any computer, be it OSX or Windows. I've tried everything on the PC software side, from clearing Kies and the Samsung Drivers, as well as clearing registry information and re-installing both separately, and this has not helped at all. The windows error is:
Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)
I don't use antivirus, and I don't use a firewall, suffice to say I'm a programmer and have plenty of experience in doodling with phones, and I'm stumped. I've come to the conclusion that the Bullet Kernel installed from my Juggernaut days is the cause of the issue, as I repeated the process on a friend's device and he has the exact same symptoms.
With this situation, I'm not able to access ODIN to return to complete stock, so I can't flash over the Bullet Kernel. Alongside the USB device not recognized problem, I also was not able to get into ODIN / download mode until I made my own USB Jig to get around it.
Is there any way to get back to the stock kernel without ODIN? Would Mobile Odin Pro work if Chainfire added support for our device? It's really pissing me off as I'm a software developer and can't use my own device to build to.
EDIT: As a note, when moving from Juggernaut / Bullet to Darkside, I flashed the appropriate ICS radio and kernel, but when returning to 2.3.5 stock from Samsung, somehow the Bullet kernel managed to persist.
edit: nvm you answered my question.
Im not aware of a way to unroot without Odin Can you get into recovery?

There is still a way to get back to the Stock ROM ( 2.3.5 ) and Recovery, but the kernel flash was not included with the package:
http://galaxys2root.com/t-mobile-galaxy-s2/how-to-unroot-t-mobile-galaxy-s2-sgh-t989/
This is apparently the "Zedomax" unroot that does not need the ability to hook up to Odin, so needless to say, it's not unrooting that I need, it's getting back to the stock kernel that is the problem.
Obviously now that I'm unrooted, there really isn't a way for me to install Mobile Odin Pro even if I had it. I've been looking how to contact him to request it, because I don't want to be rude and PM him the request when I'm sure that's not the way that respected XDA members would want.
Can I ask why you think the kernel alone isn't being overwritten? That seems odd to me, since every ROM packs its own kernel, and flashing a kernel specifically only replaces the kernel. So if you flash an ICS ROM you're getting an ICS kernel, GB you get a GB kernel, etc. It wouldn't work otherwise. If you haven't done it already, you might want to try Darkside super and cache wipes.

Well, for one, I get a Bullet loading screen... Apparently reading through other threads, it's a known issue that Zedomax's Stock ROM method doesn't include the kernel, which basically means I may have f'ed myself permanently seeing as how I can't get ODIN access. Unfortunately, galaxys2root.com didn't tell people on their site that it didn't include the kernel, so needless to say, I'm never going to that site again and I would advise people not to follow any of their stuff either.
Although it's a small omission, their lack of providing information has just caused me to possibly lose a moddable phone.
EDIT: the threads that I've been reading through are the ones you supplied, RTFOP
So can you not get into download mode or get your computer to recognize your phone in recovery? If you're willing to tinker some you can back track and root and reinstall and overwrite that kernel and then circle back.

Well, to re-hash over what I've said already for clarification's sake:
1. I can get into download / ODIN mode
2. I still CANNOT get my phone to recognize in recovery. I know it's not my PCs, it's the phone, and I suspect the Bullet Kernel as it was not reverted back to the stock kernel when I flash Zedomax.
With that said, I don't see how it's possible for me to root and get CWM seeing as how I'm on stock Recovery (3e), and I can't ODIN. Unless there is a untethered way to root the t989, I think i'm up ****'s creek.
At what point did you lose root access though?

The whole point of flashing Zedomax's .zip is to unroot and go back to stock Samsung 2.3.5.
Just to verify, I downloaded root checker and it states I do not have root access.
So if you can get into Odin with your jig workaround, why can't you load a custom recovery and super user and then run Darkside wipes and install whatever ROM you want?

I think there's a fundamental misunderstanding between you and I. When I say I can get into download / Odin MODE, that means I can force the phone itself into ODIN Mode, but since my computer does not recognize my t989, the ODIN application on my windows box does not recognize the phone, and the ID box does not 'turn yellow' as it should if my phone were recognized by my PC.
So even though my phone is waiting for the ODIN application on my windows to send it commands, I can't send it commands because the application won't recognize the phone.
Thus is my quandary.
Yeah, sorry, I didn't get that. Have you tried plugging it in without the sd card in? It's kind of a long shot, but errors on there might be keeping your computer from communicating with the device, since it seems to be working otherwise. Maybe the jtag repair service through mobile tech videos?
