Root - unlock - new ROM relation - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, i'm new in here so please be patient.
I have an orange locked desire (not branded, not rooted) and i want to flush a new rom.
I want to ask you which is the relation between the root-unlock-flush?
like can you root without unlock or can you flush rom without root or unlock?
Thank you!

You can flash generic htc roms without rooting, to flash a custom rom you need to be rooted, you dont have to unlock your fone to root or flash custom roms

wow .. awsome!! that's the way i hoped it would be cause the unlocking is overhead for me. Thanks!

help with orange uk rooting

Evening one and all...
Am looking for some help with rooting my Orange UK HTC desire. Have tried many times to root the device but as the radio keeps gettin upgraded I keep gettin the network locked message once rebooted.
Can.someone please give me detailed instructions on how to root the device without upgrading the radio as I really don't have a clue. Have managed each time to downgrade the radio and flash back to generic rom, am however wanting to root the device.
Many thanks for any advice you can give me.

its how i rooted my official rom so it should work and if you downgraded it should defo work with older bootloader versions
You'll need to use a goldcard root an orange branded desire, without it, the flash will fail.

This.
Follow Paul's r6 method from http://desire.modaco.com its the easiest way possible IMO.

He must already have a goldcard if you look as he says he has already downgraded to a generic rom

Just look for a ROM that states 'no radio's in the title, that way it'll keep your current working radio.

yes.
DO not upgrade radio unless your phone is unlocked.
All custom ROMs here on XDA do not contain radio's so you should be fine just flashing a new ROM after you have rooted. Changing the radio is a optional step if you are unlocked or not on Orange.

[Q] Can I root my Desire if locked on Vodafone?

Hi guys,
I know my question maybe dumb, but I am not as much an expert in this android business.
So, can I use Unrevoked to root my desire if it is locked on Vodafone (Romania)? Can I debrand or unlock it, via a ROM , a MOD or anything simillar? Or only in specialized centers?
Thanks for your ideas.
It is possible to root and debrand your desire using the unrevoked method and to use a custom ROM.
If it's a branded phone, you may need to use a gold card. If it's recent model, then you may need to downgrade the boot loader to an earlier version. There are some excellent guides out there (see this post for links).
A friend of mine believed that his HTC Legend was still SIM locked after all this, so I'm not entirely sure you'll be able to unlock the phone that way.
Thanks man for the quick reply. I used unrevoked with no issues on my previous Desire (which I sold to try the nokia N8) but that was not locked. Now I have a chance to get a locked one at a more reasonable price and that is why i was wondering. So practically it is ok, I just need to root so that I can have a few minor tweaks like on my previous one. No major stuff: just for instance installing the ROM manager or backup pro or A2SD+. So if this is possible I dont need the phone to be unlocked, as I actually am on Vodafone.

[Q] easy & quick question about root & debrand

hey guys..
I just have a quick question regarding rooting and debranding..
I debranded my German T-Mobile branded HTC Desire back when 2.2 was just out for the Desire, so I could get the update couple of months earlier.
and just last night I rooted my device, without any problems..
now, regarding my question:
my room mate got a new Desire with a T-Mobile brand and froyo..
he wants his phone to get to my state, so can I just root it and install a stock ROM on his phone and the brand will be gone too?
or do I need to unbrand it first..
thanks for any help!
peace
(PS: to avoid you having to ask anything,
after the root, his desire will probably have s-on if I do it the way I rooted my device. can he install ROMs with s-on?)
thanks you guys
UPDATE:
I just successfully rooted his device..
so, will the brand be gone if I install a custom or stock ROM?
or do I still need to debrand? his s ist still on too..
You can flash a stock WWE ROM without rooting.
Just get the ROM, make a goldcard and flash it.
You can, also root before or after flashing the WWE ROM if you want to.
Root and S-OFF are different and are done separately, and of course, you can flash custom roms when s-off.
I Edit also:If you install a custom rom or a stock WWE ROM the branding will be gone for as long as he stays on these roms.
I am not sure what you mean by debranding as it is rather the state that you are not an a branded ROM with a branded device, i.e., it's not something permanent that makes your device unbranded.
thanks for the quick answer..
s-off was a typo tho.
I meant s-on..
can't I just install it through Rom-Manager?
and will the brand be gone after that?
Okay, for the brand part see the edit above.
You can install ROMs with rom manager.
You can install ROMs with S-ON.
thank you so much dude..
I have to admit I'm still learning all this android stuff..
just don't wanna brick my friends device, nahmean?
thanks again..
peace

How to unlock a HTC Wildfire to any network

I have been looking throught the forum and found many different ways to unlock and flash a HTC Wildfire which is currently running HBOOT version 1.01.0002.
What is the easiest way to downgrade the HBOOT with instructions?
Ive tried various ways and not getting much look with this Android based phone, basically i just want to unlock the phone back to manufacturer status, and if at a later date flash it with some sub-standard ROMS, for testing purposes of course.
I do have an old HTC Touc Diamond and that was the simplest HTC ive unlocked, one executable and once run you can then flash with any custom ROM.
Could it be as easy for the HTC Wildfire?
I do have ROMS for the Wildfire, but the phone rejects the WWE Manufacturer ROM at about 90% flashed. The ROM i want to flash the device with is :
RUU_Buzz_HTC_WWE_1.37.405.1_Radio_13.53.55.24H_3.35.19.25_release_151892_signed
Any help and easy guide to flash this thing would be appreciated
Thanks
not that easy...
Hi.
What I have read so far the free wildfire unlock is not possible...
For you to install custom ROM's you need (if I am not wrong):
1 - to put the security off (s-off)
2 - to root your phone
Then you you can flash all the ROM's you want...
For any of the above steps try this thread by 3xeno.

[Q] Why downgrade?

I'm root curious as I want to remove my carriers branded software, and after the lastest update my phone has developed a lag, so I am considering rooting and a rom but I am confused.
The how to root guide talks about downgrading? Is this a good idea?
Do I need permanent root?
Thanks in advance..
HTC Desire HD A9191 in the UK on Orange
android 2.3.5
sense 3.0
I cant remember the exact process as i rooted my phone more than a year ago.
Basically you need to gain temp root, then downgrade in order to achieve permanent root.

Yes, you need to dowgrade first. You can folllow this guide
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1259821
Is a one step process to root, S-OFF, supercid, custom recovery etc. Then you will be able to flash any custom rom or a stock rooted rom.
Follow the instructions very carefully.
Ah Ok so does that mean you cannot root unless you downgrade? So when you install a custom rom does it upgrade you again?
I'm kind of lost as to why running older/downgraded software is good idea once you have gained root?

The problem is that on DHD is not possible to root (actually) if you have android 2.3.5.
So you need to downgrade first. Once you have rooted the phone you can flash a Stock rooted android 2.3.5 sense 3.0 (like the one you have now) or a custom rom.
This one is a stock rooted android 2.3.5 sense 3.0 for example (f you like the stock feeling) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1382235.
Hope it helps
Clarifies it perfectly. I understand now, thanks very much for your reply.
Glad it helped
The next question then is - I guess what I really want is to keep my phone as it is now. So If I do the advanced ace hack , install that stock rom above, my phone will be exactly the same (like with all my settings etc? except I can uninstall all the crappy orange bloatware etc?

When you will run the ace hack kit you will be prompted to download a RUU in order to downgrade. Be carefull and chose the WWE (world wide english) and not a branded one. Doing so you will get rid of all crappy bloatware.
If you will download the rom I linked, your phone will be exactly as it is now (not the settings of course, you will lose your settings).
It will be as out of the box and need to set again.
Just be carefull and follow exactly (read twice and even more) the instructions.
OK I am doing mucho reading as we speak!
Good. I did it too.
Read, learn and try. It's the only way.
I bought my DHD in February 2011 and googled aroud this forums to learn, finally on december I decided to join. Good luck!!
