Hi guys....
I m a complete noob regarding android and custom roms and i must confess i find the whole thing a bit confusing..
I m a previous iphone owner where jailbreaking was a straightforward procedure and recently bought an htc desire and this rooting and OTA update thingies got a lot confusion to me...
I live in cyprus and purchased an htc desire from ebay,
it has a T-mobile boot logo but its unlocked...
so i have some questions to make and thanks in advance for any responses....
1. will i be able to retrieve any future OTA updates when HTC releases them like froyo? ( I m asking coz the phone looks like it s not factory unlocked... it has a T mobile boot logo on it)
2.If I root the phone and install an official HTC rom (with sence) will i be able to receive OTA updates?
the whole rootin thing gives me shivers coz i ve heard its a little dangerous... so
3.If i root it and install a custom rom from the community is it going to get updates if the specific team release any? or i m going to repeat the rooting procedure and install a new rom every time its released by them?
I m a bit scared of it.....
Thanks
1) OTA should work but its a branded Desire
2) I dont see why not
3) Installing a custom ROM is fine, just pick someone you like, Defrost, Setrom etc and flash with their latest version,,,, check the forums a week later and there has uaually been an update or some changes
for help Rooting have a look at this, nice and simple, just follow the rooting process for a Branded Desire and Goldcard and you should be fine

Thanks a lot for your answers m8,
Now things are getting clearer..

Ok, I thought that in case of branded phone, network operators are pushing the updates

I be read somewhere that a guy debranded his HTC desire with the official Rom but when he installed some OTA updates, the WiFi broke...
Then a guy advised him that he should root his phone and install a custom Rom instead of the official one, just to avoid future risks with OTA updates..

I d prefer to root my phone and install an official Rom....
How can I do that?
How risky is it?
All I want is to debrand my phone and make it like a factory unlocked one, without any future risks...
Thanks!!!
Best bet is GoldCarding it
again follow this;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696189
and then install the ROM in post #4 its the standard HTC ROM but it has the rooted benefits (superuser app etc) thats the best way to keep it simple, the wifi breaking was an issue with the Radio i beleive that wouldent work with the ROM he was running
Ohhh I see
Thanks a lot for your support m8,
So I should first root the phone with goldcard following the guide in post 3,
And then follow the guide " How to Unroot your HTC Desire to stock"
In post 4...
Right?

Exactly, so with the GoldCard you can flash to a ROM of your picking but if you feel its not for you flash back to stock and you havent lost anything (except for root)
Hey Guys,
im getting a Desire through Telstra tonight, and the first thing i want to do is debrand the thing.
I have read up on some things but still a little confused, can someone point me in the right direction, of 1 how to unlock the phone, root it and the best ROM to install on it.
Much Appreciated
Ok i think i know what im doing now.
One thing though, i just want a normal rom to put on it, just debranded, can anyone recommend me something?
I dont really want custom roms etc
Look in the sticky in rom section, shows the stock roms available. Then you can upgrade to stock 2.2
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Ok so if i use this rom
RUU_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.21.405.2_Radio_32.36.00.28U_4. 06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed.exe
Which are not rooted do i still need to root the device etc or can i just use this rom and it will update and remove the telstra stuff?
And is this the latest normal 2.2 Rom?
You need to root to debrand, then put the stock Rom on
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Ok no worries ill do that, but is the rom i posted the correct Stock 2.2 Rom i would use in AUS? for the Desire?
Just remember having a goldcard always inserted, while debranding and OTA updating.
I was gunna do this method, no goldcard needed.
http://myhtcdesire.com/modding/how-to-root-your-desire-easily-method-2
But do i only have to have the goldcard inserted while updating and rooting, then i can remove it?

HI there,
I used the unrevoked method and this provides "root" and ClockworkMod Recovery. I then initially downloaded [ROM-FroYo] Official Froyo HTC Sense ROM (16/07 v1.0c | OpenDesire Team) link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=726300
The above rom is very much like the standard HTC sense ROM but without the Tel$tra bloatware. Have a good search on xda though as there have been a number of roms (sense like) been released since this one.
I have since moved on to [ROM-FROYO AOSP] OpenDesire v3.6.1 (720P | 2.6.34.5 SVS KERNEL | 1305mhz) (26/08). http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=712615
This rom is a "vanilla" (plain) version of the android OS and is half the size of the sense ROM, and is clean and fast, but you lose the "sense" interface and the HTC FM radio.
Everything else camera, wi-fi, GPS, phone, etc works perfectly from me.
BTW, all this is on a Tel$ta Desire (A8183) that is 3 months old. I have had no probs at all.
Hope this helps
Thats awesome info great so ill use the guide i posted to Root the device then i can install any ROM i wont, i think ill use the original 2.2 Rom that i posted earlier in the thread
to confirm even if i want to use a stock HTC RUU rom from the Stock Rom page i still have to Root my device?

It would be pointless rooting before applying an RUU, as it's not necessary and the flash process will remove root anyway.
That RUU you pointed to will break a Desire with an SLCD screen, so be warned.
Ok so i should just use a hacked rom thats based on the normal one, how do i find out if the phone i have is SLCD?
You can still use an official ROM. Read this for lots of info:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=749551
WOW now im even more confused i used to be able to hack my old HTC Touch Pro easily lol.
Ok so i have to hope my Telstra delivered phone is still AMOLED, then i wont have any dramas, to be honest im not much into running a custom rom, id rather just get rid of the telstra crap thats going to be on the phone, but i also do not want to brick it or break the screen in the process.
So if i just use one of the RUU updates in your post you linked me too it doesnt matter if its AMOLED or SLCD i can update to it without rooting?
Ill get the phone first work out if i have SLCD or not, then go from there.
I wont Froyo on my phone and no telstra stuff so i can make a goldcard and update, or if i have a AMOLED phone use the Rooting tool and update to any rooted ROM correct?
You can debrand on any type of screen using the correct RUU. You can root both types too.
If you root you cannot run an official ROM, but you can run something almost exactly the same.
Which Froyo Rom (rooted) would be the closest to stock?
To Confirm if i have an AMOLED phone i can just update a Stock Non Branded ROM without rooting? By placing the update.zip on the phone and updating using recovery mode?

hi widge
just go with the flow, unbrand it, root it and play with all the roms, your gonna love it. try em all and see what u like best. I am on nextsense rom 7 at the mo and waiting for the kitchen to open again so i can do some cooking. Tried opendesire a while back and it was pretty mint, may take a lokk at it again myself.
You can't switch to an unbranded rom by using update.zip files, you use an RUU to flash the phone, which requires a goldcard.
To install custom roms you root and install them as zip files in recovery.
You can do both on an SLCD or AMOLED screen, but with an SLCD screen you have to be more careful which RUU you use.
Last night I've upgraded my Desire HD android 2.3 (the official update from htc)
I've waited with rooting my device until the official update came out.
I've tried rooting with visionary, but it doesn't seem to work. :s
I haven't tried rooting on an other way yet, but is it possible I'm not able to root my device yet because it's running on gingerbread now?
Or won't there ever be a way to root it?
I hope I'll get a quick answer, I'm quite a newbie to this and I'd like to have my device rooted!

nope.. the only one rom rootable its 1.32xxx WEE OFICIAL RUU
BUT DON´T WORRY DOWNGRADE ITS AN EASY STEP..
if you need help post again in Q&A mate...
First, I need to downgrade (but I don't understand the gold card)
Then I need to root
Then I need it to be s-off? And then I can install custom recoveries (= custom roms??), but what if I don't want custom roms?
If I just want to tweak a bit with the gingerbread+sense version I have at the moment (changing icons in notification bar, changing bootscreen etc), do I still need to continue with the s-off step?
Or can I only tweak with the things I want if I have a custom rom?

okay let´s do it...
if you want to flash later another different baseband (radio) you need s-off & you must to continue doing it... (with Radio s-off tool... etc..)
but its not neccesary for to flash a new rom...
custom recovery isn´t a rom..
custom rec. its a menú that you need for to flash roms... etc into your machine..
neccesary for recover your system if anything goes badly (IMPORTANT)...
AND FINALLY... you can flash custom roms that are not ported from another device or are not themed etcc... simply are OFFICIAL ROMS (WEE OFFICIAL RUU named) only with root acces, (deodexed, zipaligned...etc for better performance... sometimes upper that 50 % speedup!! )
if you flashes a official rom without root incorporated your going to lose your work (root... recovery,, etc.. but not s-off)
i recommend to you that continue doing s-off and eng-off for obtain "CID 111111" (BROWSE what is this an judge by yourself )
I have a Orange branded DHD, unlocked via IMEI, running 2.3.3, i want to install the HTC rom as i have been told it comes with far less bloatware.
I do want a genuine rom though, rather than a cooked version, so have opted for the HTC rom. I found and downloaded the following file which claims to be what i need.
Am i correct?
RUU_Ace_Gingerbread_S_HTC_WWE_2.36.405.8_R_Radio_12.54.60.25_26.09.04.11_M2_release_187331_signed
Also, as it is a genuine rom, do i still need to do all that "rooting" business?
Or can i go ahead and install/flash?
Thanks for any possible help or tips.

If your phone is allready rooted then, after installing the new Official ROM it will be unrooted again, You can try downgrading to the official 1.3x version and then update from HTC direclty. I dont know if you gonna have any problems
because your phone is branded, but i dont rly think so. Im just a user using roms etc, have no idea for further instructions!
Considering you paid a hefty sum for your Desire HD, i strongly recommend you first find your branded rom somewhere in the dev forum first. Just in case you have to reflash teh stock rom for warranty issues. For the rest, I also recommend downgrading to 1.3x first and then flashing whatever you want (cooked roms need s-offs and root). I have a guide in my sig on how to root, s-off and flash a rom, however, stock roms are executables from what i know so you might not need to follow my guide just plug in your dhd with drivers installed and let the exe do its work. Regarding downgrading, you will find a link in my thread to the "Downgrading to 1.3x thread". Have fun
Edit:
I know of 3 ways to brick your dhd:
1. Partitioning your sd card with clockwork mod recovery 3.0.2.5
2. Editing some esf files or something and mistyping something
3. SMashing your phone into a brick wall repeatedly
So, don't worry so much, it's not a galaxy S
Yes, the file i have is an executable file. I think it is the most recent genuine HTC rom available for this device.
So, that being said, i should not need to root or downgrade etc? Just double click & go?
Surly you should not have to root your device when wanting to install a different, but still genuine rom?
I have found it very difficult to locate stock roms for this device.
Going to have another search now, but if anyone knows a shortcut, i'd be more than gratefull

You will need to downgrade first as your device is branded. Once downgraded just run the RUU and Bobs your mothers brother.
If you have an orange dhd you will need the orange upgrade. I'm pretty sure if you try to use a different one it won't let you do it. I'm not 100‰on this.
I used to get android updates for T-Mobile brand off the T-Mobile website.

@ ghostofcain
And to downgrade is it just a simple rom flash? Or do i need to root or s-off etc first?
I know this would be the case with cooked roms, but i'm only talking about Genuine releases here.
I'm currently running an Orange branded 2.3.3 ROM, so if i simply flash an older rom to the device, then i am all set to flash the newest HTC generic rom to the Desire, right?
That older rom i need to flash first, it would have to be Orange branded too right? Is there any chance you could give me it's exact name or provide a link?
Thanks greatly for the help.

Once you have downgraded you don't need root or s-off to flash the RUU and you don't have to flash an orange branded one. You can flash any updated .exe.
if I have time ill find you a link..
*EDIT*
Also bear in mind if you flash the orange ruu. Or any other branded rom. It will still have all the bloatware you are trying to get rid of.
You must flash a standard HTC one. Go to the HTC website and download the official update from there. You will need to downgrade first though.

That's the problem, the HTC 2.3.3 rom was only ever released OTA, and is not available to download from their website.
Although i think i have managed to find the ".exe" version of that rom.

From what i can tell, this seems to be the newest, Genuine HTC 2.3.3 rom for the Desire HD.
So, i just need to downgrade and then install this right?
So what do i need & what do i do to downgrade, bearing in mind what i currently have installed?

the 1.32 downgrade should be in the link I sent you. I'm not sure about the ota updates. its seriously worth considering doing a full root after you dg and try out some of the fantastic roms some of which are kept as stock but you have more options and root privilages.

You have to downgrade and use a goldcard to de-brand your phone. You cannot flash a standard WWE ROM on a branded phone. After you have completed the steps of de-branding and flashing the latest WWE ROM.... OTA updates may or may not work.
Everything you have asked about is already thoroughly documented elsewhere in the forum and I suggest you go read all the stickies. Do not do anything with your phone that you do not fully understand as you could run into problems.
With Regards to warranty and such-like that people have mentioned, HTC don't really care what you do to the phone software-wise, they might have a problem if you returned it too them in pieces claiming that it just came out of your pocket that way.
Just read everything here and you should be good to go.
Peace.
I'm root curious as I want to remove my carriers branded software, and after the lastest update my phone has developed a lag, so I am considering rooting and a rom but I am confused.
The how to root guide talks about downgrading? Is this a good idea?
Do I need permanent root?
Thanks in advance..

I cant remember the exact process as i rooted my phone more than a year ago.
Basically you need to gain temp root, then downgrade in order to achieve permanent root.

Yes, you need to dowgrade first. You can folllow this guide
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1259821
Is a one step process to root, S-OFF, supercid, custom recovery etc. Then you will be able to flash any custom rom or a stock rooted rom.
Follow the instructions very carefully.
Ah Ok so does that mean you cannot root unless you downgrade? So when you install a custom rom does it upgrade you again?
I'm kind of lost as to why running older/downgraded software is good idea once you have gained root?

The problem is that on DHD is not possible to root (actually) if you have android 2.3.5.
So you need to downgrade first. Once you have rooted the phone you can flash a Stock rooted android 2.3.5 sense 3.0 (like the one you have now) or a custom rom.
This one is a stock rooted android 2.3.5 sense 3.0 for example (f you like the stock feeling) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1382235.
Hope it helps
Clarifies it perfectly. I understand now, thanks very much for your reply.
Glad it helped
The next question then is - I guess what I really want is to keep my phone as it is now. So If I do the advanced ace hack , install that stock rom above, my phone will be exactly the same (like with all my settings etc? except I can uninstall all the crappy orange bloatware etc?

When you will run the ace hack kit you will be prompted to download a RUU in order to downgrade. Be carefull and chose the WWE (world wide english) and not a branded one. Doing so you will get rid of all crappy bloatware.
If you will download the rom I linked, your phone will be exactly as it is now (not the settings of course, you will lose your settings).
It will be as out of the box and need to set again.
Just be carefull and follow exactly (read twice and even more) the instructions.
OK I am doing mucho reading as we speak!
Good. I did it too.
Read, learn and try. It's the only way.
