Hi, I hope this hasn't been asked, I searched and had a look through a few pages manually and couldn't find anything.
I seem to have a problem sending emails from my hotmail account on the HTC Desire. I have an HD2 set up with my account and it works fine, but my friends desire set up with MY details will receive my emails but not send them. Has anyone come across this before. I've been through the settings and they match up with what is listed online.
Thanks in advance
(again hope its not already been asked)
Check your account settings and apply these settings:
Outgoing:
Outgoing mail server address - smtp.live.com

Hi, yeah I've checked through these and they perfectly match the settings on the phone. I've even registered myself for Gmail, set up the phone to receive the Gmail emails (which it does fine) but it will also not send from the Gmail account.
The messages disappear, they go to sent items not outbox. But just never seem to reach the destination. (tested the destination several times by sending emails from my HD2 and its working fine)
Thank you anyway though
Try changing the outgoing server port to 587 and that should work for you.
If not, are you rooted or running the stock firmware? Have you tried a hard reset to eradicate any potential software bugs?

Yeah I saw someone had 587 and I tried that. I think I have found the problem (after saying I tested the destination thourghly) emails sent from the Desire are being rejected by our mailscanner. However when sent from my HD2 they arrive fine. But when I sent an email from the Desire to another hotmail account it worked. When sending to a yahoo account it arrived and then instantly disappeared again into junk. So I guess now I would ask...do you know why the emails are being put into junk when sent from the desire, but the same email from an HD2 doesn't?
Thanks
No idea mate. I thought it could be something to do with your mailscanner config on your mail server but like you say, it receives email ok when sent from your HD2 :S

Yeah definitely a weird one, I guess I'll have a tinker and see what happens, if I get a result I'll post it up incase anyone has the same problem in future.
But thanks for your help
Dan

Hello, I'm hoping someone can help.
I recently bought a HTC Desire and I'm loving it except for a big problem with my IMAP email account.
Everything worked perfectly for the first day. However the next morning I noticed I hadn't received any emails. I ended up deleting the account and starting again. No joy.. I ended up hard resetting the device and setting all back up. This time the only mail I received was what it hadn't received prior to resetting.
Now after numerous resets and support phone calls the device receives absolutely nothing yet it will send no problem. I have another account which works fine. Also the email account works fine on all other devices.
I understand the obvious question is whether I've configured the device correctly. Trust me I have.
Please can anyone suggest anything? It's almost like the Desire has cached something about my email account despite the data wipes..?
Many thanks in advance!
David
Just the same issue - "no mails"...
IMAP works perfectly here. I have one Exchange ActiveSync account and one IMAP account.
My IMAP gmail account is working perfectly here too. But I did had problem getting email notification to appear on the status bar which I manage to resolved.
I tried the imap but went back to just the gmail app as the gmail app had the emails come through much faster. I didn't find the imap and gmail worked well at all.
Tried an alternative mail client like K-9?
I'm using K-9 but I don't like it. I haven't yet found anything else that does push with IMAP though. K-9 doesn't work in the same way as other email apps for POP, which I use for another account. In fact it's unusable for me for POP on Gmail as it deletes msgs as soon as they arrive (they are not being deleted from server).

Same problem over here with IMAP failing to retrieve new emails after a certain point. I think the built in client is having difficulty with some messages - if I use another mail client to delete the next email (after the Desire stopped receiving new mail), receiving springs back into life.
I'm going to take a closer look at this. My best guess is that the HTC email client has an obscure bug relating to a mis-implementation of the IMAP protocol. For all sorts of reasons, I'd like to get the HTC client working! Perhaps there's a workaround we can implement until a bug fix is released.
In short, definitely a bug.
I agree, there is definitely a bug in there - more than one. I think I'm going to be forced to go back to good old pop3 for emails on the Desire. Even then though, the HTC mail app doesn't do push. Maybe k9 will work better with pop3 than it does with IMAP. Although neither k9 or the gmail app copy and paste do they? So I don't know what is going to be best.

so ok. I have my new lovely desire. But one problem. I added my new email address to the Mail aip. It works but i can receive email. Instead I just get the message: "This is an old news letter and has expired".
how can i fix this?
Use the following settings
pop 3 address: pop3.live.com
enable SSL
smtp add: smtp.live.com
enable TLS
job done
Bump!
I've run into the same problem. Above posted settings don't work for me, when manually inserting them. Same goes for auto-detected settings after filling in my hotmail address and password.
When I change the app's settings to download the previous X amount of emails instead of past X amount of days, emails do get downloaded. The problem here, however, is that these are the very first emails I received, dating from the year 2000 and marked as "unread". When going through them to mark them as "read" again, new "unread" messages won't get through and the very first emails are kept.
Very strange problem that only affects, as far as I know, a minimal amount of users.
I've tried deleting the account, restarting and even a hard-reset to no avail.
Furthermore, I've contacted microsoft and htc. Microsoft's answer was rubbish, stating I should try the settings they provided in the email, which were the exact same settings I told them I had already used... Still waiting for HTC's response.
PS: Other mail accounts work fine btw.
Anyone experiencing the same problem?
I'm gonna go ahead and try this again. Bump, please help!
Just tried with these settings and it worked for me:
POP server: pop3.live.com (Port 995)
POP SSL required? Yes USE TLS
User name: Your Windows Live ID, for example [email protected]
Password: The password you usually use to sign in to Hotmail or Windows Live
SMTP server: smtp.live.com (Port 25)
Authentication required? Yes (this matches your POP username and password)
TLS/SSL required? Yes USE TLS
Important things to note are in red. Hope that helps
Thanks for the reply, but I already had those settings (everyone assumes I got them wrong ). Anyway, I solved it this afternoon after a lot of trial and error...

I did two things to get it to work. Perhaps one would suffice, but I couldnt be bothered to check which one fixed the problem. Here's what I did:
- Somewhere in the settings you can link your hotmail to your live account. I did that.
- I had a huge amount of emails in my inbox. I moved like half of them to a new folder.
Afterwards, the mail app synced without a problem.
Good luck!

I LOVE YOU!!!
XDA, this is my last resort.
I have a Yahoo E-Mail account that I decided to set up today with the HTC E-Mail app, as the Yahoo one is rubbish. Everything works brilliantly, apart from the fact that when I delete a message from my phone, it stays on the server over at Yahoo*.
Would anybody be able to tell me how to solve this problem and weather there is an option to actually delete mail on the server when deleted from the phone? Thanks in advance.

I am only guessing there might me a setting somewhere in the app, about the amount of time for leaving mail on your server [BT Yahoo!], if you are in fact downloading mail to your device.
Take Care

I think it's a mailbox setting you can configure in Yahoo webmail but i'm not shore. I'm using Gmail and that one has a setting something called like "leave a copy in mailbox". Good luck!

I've set-up my Hotmail. When I receive an email it doesn't push it to my handset immediately. I've had a look in the settings but I don't understand what I need to change to that the emails are pushed as soon as they're received.
Please can anyone help?

You can change the frequency of when it checks your email.

Use the Hotmail app instead then, this support push notifications.
I use and would recommend "Touch down for smart phones" it is almost instant push notifications and seems to work very well i have been using it for 18 months now. The other option is to set up your hotmail to forward masks to your gmail account, this also works well.

Thanks for the replies. I will take a look at the other options you suggested although I would prefer to use the default app. I'm not keen on the Hotmail app.
Scotty mate, i had the same problem, the Hotmail app sorts it, and now I prefer it to the stock mail app.

I'll try it out for a bit, see how it goes.
In order to get true push email + IMAP for HOTMAIL use this settings:
Incoming settings:
Enter your email account and password Do no hit next, instead click Manual Setup Chose Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync
In the Domain\Username field: delete everything and enter your email address In the Server field: enter m.hotmail.com Keep the box ticked for 'Use secure connection (SSL)' and keep the box unticked for 'Accept all SSL certificates'
Should do it.

Yes that worked a treat. Cheers mate!
I set-up my push email (hotmail) with the settings mentioned earlier in the thread. I thought it was working because I was receiving my mail. The thing is, I only get my emails when I click 'refresh' in the app. I sent myself an email from the PC and it wasn't pushed to the phone. Not sure were I'm going wrong. In the settings I have 'push mail' selected on peak & off peak. I have the data connection on. Does anyone have any idea what I need to change in the settings?
Anyone?
Using the email app or the Hotmail account in Account & Sync?
The email app wouldn't update for me either, and i've read a few posts from people with the same problem.
I just use the Hotmail Account to auto sync

Thanks for the reply. I managed to sort it out (with help from wnp_79). I downloaded the stock Android app and set up my account. The emails are pushed to the handset now.
Nae bother. So you can download the stock app from the Market? I'm guessing its just called Mail? It would be better to have that working than Mail and Hotmail both trying to sync, for battery life.
No the app is not on the market.
Here is the application.
Guide on how to set-up Hotmail manually on it. (Just in case)
Hope this helps.
Cheers dude
Tried searching but could not find anything useful.
I've set up my POP3 email many times on all of my HTC phones. Today i got myself the Note 2 and did my usual email set up but am having issues trying to send emails out. It just keep failing. Anybody else came across this issue?
What other email app would you recommend similar to the stock email app? K9 email is way too complicated for me
Im new to android but after reading people suggest me to use maildroid from the google store and works very well for me

Thanks. Really wish the damn default email client works Am using AquaMail. Seems ok so far.
Hey Buddy,
It probably isn't your email client, more than likely your settings. If your network is o2, go into your settings and change your SMTP settings to smtp.o2.co.uk and port 25. This should enable you to send email whilst on 3G at least. Ideally you can just add your network's smtp setting and have that as well as your email provider's too.

Thanks for your reply but it's weird that i can get go email, aqua mail and a couple more other email clients to work but not the stock mail. I've had a string of HTC phones and never had settings issues until now. I've tried port 25, 26 and 587. Tried with different security settings like SSL and stuff but still no go.
I'm guessing i'm the only one facing this problem
