Sitting at my desk in central London, I get 4-5 bars of gprs signal only, no 3g whatsoever. If I set it to "WCDMA only" in settings then it will sit without a signal all day.
I put my SIM back in my old phone (HTC HD) and it gets 5 bars of HSDPA at around 3mbps in the exact same location. If the signal is so good why can't the desire even detect it?
Same story at my house, old HD gets 4-5 bars of H while the desire fluctuates between 1 bar of H and 5 bars of gprs.
Do I have a faulty unit or is just the limitations of the desire's radio hardware?
Does anyone on O2 in London get a decent signal comparable with their old phone?

Wasn't aware there was a newer radio, I've had the 1.21 OTA update which I thought contained a radio update as well. I used to flash different radios on the old HD but it never made such a drastic difference as either 5 bars of 'H' or not even detecting the 3g network at all.

Hi,
I'm currently using radio version 1.09.23. I've tried 3 other radio, the default, 1.05.*. No matter which radio I'm using the 3G reception is very weak on Three UK network.
Does anyone has any suggestion which radio they use for Three UK? London area.
Thanks
3's signal is usually weak. It's not phone's fault i guess.
my sony ericsson has a far better signal that the HTC and the SE holds the signal
im currently thinking about binning the Touch diamond and using the SE all over again and just use the HTC for my golf gps system bit of a waste tho
The GSM reception is absolutely fine. It's the 3G that is really dissapointing.
Yes, I had the same problem.
So, I bought a E71 from three.
Most of the time on E71 is 3G, sometimes 3.5G(that's HSDPA signal)
HTC supports 3G, but on my HTC phone, I only got HSDPA signal.
I thought the phone receive different 3G frequency.
As Three has weak HSDPA signal, so HTC receive weak signal with three.
So I had a test, I insert a T-mobile sim card.
T-mobile do the HTC diamond, so I thought they should support it .
The signal is very good.
In conclusion, I can only think that's frequency problem.
After about a week plus of having my TP2, i realize that where i normally am surfing the net, i don't have HSDPA anymore. All i get is 3G. It's strange cos when i put the sim card into my TP, it gets HSDPA right away.
I've taken my TP2 out and in town, it gets HSDPA so that pretty much confirms that there is no setting problem. I've flashed with all the available Radio from the radio thread and none seem to help. I still can't get HSDPA where i'm sitting now while my TP would have full strength.
Anybody else has this problem? Is there a way to force HSDPA connection?
Anybody?
I just hard reset my TP2 and still no "H". Took the TP2 out for a drive closer to tonw and i get "H" which again means nothing is wrong with the settings portion.
Take the sim card out and put it into my TP, i get a strong full strength "H" from where my TP2 could not get
Weird & sad cos i use my data plan a lot.
Try downloading something and see if actively using the data connection switches it over from 3g to H
Let me preface by saying I don't have TP2 yet, still waiting on AT&T
I think without using something like Advanced Config (assuming there is a rhodium version), it will only show 3G even if it is in fact an HSDPA signal. You can adjust the setting with advanced config to enable the H display. But it is just enabling the icon I believe.
With the stock rom on my worldwide version it comes up with H when i use the data connection, otherwise it sits on 3g even in full reception ;- ) why i suggested it
worldwide edition is; world 3G on GSM right? where can you get that one!

Worldwide except the USA I believe. Otherwise I would have bought it long ago
dammit!
I want to upgrade to this **** from my TyTN that is falling apart but no Canada 3G until 2010 quarter 2. thats when rogers upgrades to 2100
HSDPA is 3G. Some taskbars on the Touch Pro 2 label a 3G connection as "H" or HSDPA.
You are getting the same data speeds regardless of whether the "H" or the "3G" symbol can be seen on your phone.
However if you get an "E" or a "G" that means you will get EDGE speeds and GSM speeds respectively.
The fastest is as follows from left to right: 3G > EDGE > GSM
Thanx for the reply guys.
HSDPA is faster then 3G right? Or did i get that information wrong
Anyway HSDPA is already enable in my TP2 as when i move to other locations...say closer to town, i do get "H". I just feel that the reception is not as strong as that of the TP cos at home where my TP has HSDPA connection, my TP2 does not
I have just got my desire on T-Mobile, and am happy with the phone. But the signal strength both on my wifi and phone signal is very week. I was originally on T-Mobile for many years and never had a signal problem at home, so I tried my sim in an old Nokia and I am getting full bars, in my desire it fluctuates between 1-3 bars. I also have an N-router set up and get perfect coverage right across the house with all my wifi devices, but not the desire, even if I am only a few feet away from my router the best I can get is about 50% strength.
Is there a problem with the firmware, or do I have hardware issue, any comments welcome.
HTC Desire's 3G signal is much weaker than 2G.
I am at home, HTC Desire only has 1 to 2 levels of 3G signal, but full signal when turn to 2G. I use same SIM card on my Samsung i8000, 4-5 levels (5 is full) when in 3G.
How to fix the 3G weak signal of HTC Desire?

Are you rooted? If so, try flashing a different radio version as this can improve 3G speed and signal strength as well as Wi-Fi performance, and battery life.

have tried different versions of radio, no luck. which version of Radio is the best ?
2G has a greater range than 3g, I think.
When I'm in the middle of nowhere I always get a 2G signal even if I know there is a 3g tower closer than the 2G one I'm connected to.
I generally get better signal with 2G most of the time.

Hey guy,
You didn't read my first post carefully.

sorry,
phones perform differently, also some phones give you a misleading scale on the signal level, there is no industry standard as to what signal level 4 bars is afaik. manufacturers have been known to fudge scales of all sorts on their devices to make it appear better than a rival product.
try to get both phones to report signal level in dBm to compare accurately.
I also get relatively poor 3g signal with my desire compared to some other phones i have had...looking at bars, have never compare dBm.

Bars are no way to tell how strong the signal really is, since i flashed the latest radio i have a decent 3g connection without any bars.
If you already tried different radios there is no way to fix it, different devices will preform differently under the same conditions, nothing to do about that.

which radio you use regarded as decent?
32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27, but please understand that that will mean nothing for your situation.

this is what I am using. no good.
By the way, to all.
What I mean 3G signal is for voice. the reception is poor for phone call in 3G, it sucks when doing phone calls, but no problem in 2G. I place my SIM card into Samsung i8000, reception is strong and phone call has no suck at all.
In my house i have ALWAYS had FULL GSM 2G signal and if i go into the kitchen i could get 1 maybe 2 bars of 3G
But since yesterday that is not the case. Now i am only getting 2/3 bars of 2G (-97dbm) and occasional drop outs in signal all together - very annoying
What can be done?

It might just be a fault with your nearest cell tower so temporary. Do you have another phone you can try and use to see if that works as you expect? This would point to the phone itself being the problem or not?
Regards
Phil
What network are u on? I'm on orange and I only get 2-3 bars when network switches to orange-T-Mobile but when I manually set network back to jus Orange I got 4-5 bars

Thanks phil, I think u may have been right. I downloaded network signal info from the market and it was showing that I was connected to a mast about 1.8 km away and today my signal was back to normal... After checking with the app it showed I was connected to a mast around 1.2 km away so perhaps some maintenance was being carried out in that tower
