Syncing help! - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi i just purchase a desire a few days ago. I love this phone. It is a refresh from the windows mobile phones i used to have but, using it for a while i have a couple of questions.
First of all, i sync my facebook and gmail accounts and my flickr accounts. At the beginning i det auto sync to off because my nrw carrier and their unlimited data plan doesnt come into effect till july 1st. I would manually sync fb and email. However, after a night and in the morning i can no longer sync. Pressing the buttons doesnt do anything. I even turn on auto sync amd let it sync for everything. Still doesnt work. I have tried removing the widjets and accounts but it still doesnt eork.
I ended up doing a hard and everything works. However, once i turn off auto sync the next day it wouldnt work again. The only theory i have that i have only 10 megs left from installing apps and games. I have the low space indicator. Is this the reason i cant get my gmail or fb updates through friendstream?
Thanks for reading

have you tried to free up some more space or a possible cache clear to see if it sycns when you do it manually? My phone behaves strange when the space is very low

gmail push

Does push Gmail require my data connection to be on all the time? If so, how much battery drain does a constant data connection cause?

no. ur using activesync so u have d choice of setting it to manual sync, or interval or immediate (always on)
if ur using edge, expect 8-9 hours.
3g, 6 hours top.
I’d just like to add my 2 cents in this so that people don’t get turned off by push email…
I happen to connect to an Exchange Server via Active Sync for my email. For 14 hrs a day, it’s set to sync “as items arrive” (i.e. push). During the night, I set the sync schedule to “manual”.
I get a moderate amount of emails each day and I have to say that I’ve not notice a substantial battery drain relative to an IMAP connection that polls every hour.
Push email doesn't require a constant connection as if you're always downloading something. It's more of a "pulse" connection. Try to research a bit into exactly how push email works and you'll see what I mean...
There are two ways to push gmail (or two that I've used recently). One is the new gmail sync, which is an Exchange server. Using that method, I was getting about 8 hours of battery.
The other method is the System Seven beta. I used this for a year+ on my Moto Q before gmail sync became available. I don't know how System Seven works -- it's not Exchange and it's not IMAP. But it works. It seems to be more reliable and quicker than gmail sync, at least for now. It never has gmail sync's problem with passing through attachments. On my TP2, with Seven, I can turn Direct Push off in Comm Manager, and I get more than 24 hours of battery. The only funny glitch with Seven is that on the TF3D home messaging tab, in the little envelope on the screen, instead of showing the beginning of the message, it says, "Click to view message." But that's o.k.; I wouldn't read messages on that screen anyway.
I recently switched back from gmail sync to Seven, and for now it's better. I expect that in a short while, gmail sync will iron out some bugs and become more responsive, and maybe I'll switch back.
One feature that neither of them have, and I'm dying for: The ability to synchronize flags, to mark a message as "Follow up" in Pocket Outlook and have it star the message in gmail. Gmail sync allows the flag, and it will sync with Outlook, but not directly with gmail on the web.
System Seven is here: http://community.seven.com/main.php
It's free and seems likely to remain so...

the whole fb/phone saga - think i've got it

just been playing around. i removed my facebook account from the accounts & sync and that cleared the contacts from when you press "phone", just left my contacts on my phone. i re-added it (facebook for htc sense) and updated the sync live feed and it left the "phone" bit with just the contact from my phone and friendstream still worked.
im not sure how this works if you leave it to update every hour or so, whether it'll update all contacts again, but then you could always just turn it off?
just trying to work out whether if i link a contact in my phone to their fb profile and then do as above whether it'll stay linked - i doubt it but you never know!
edit: it doesnt stay linked. didnt think so. never mind i'll keep using people!

[Q] Gmail issue - continual syncs gmail lockdown

I have suffered a double whammy on my desire, after a running froyo for a week last saturday I suddenly had a low memory storage warning and subsequently my gmail, contacts and calander sync stopped. After transferring all the apps I could to the SD card and removing trivial apps I got up to 16meg phone memory and sync began to work again. Yesterday phone memory reduced again and sync stopped, deleted more apps sync started to work but looking at my gmail on the laptop to confirm emails were up to date my browser version declared my account had been put into lockdown due to unusual activity WTF
Today memory back down to 11meg, sync stopped again, deleted a few more apps (ones I wanted) then updated facebook for android and suddenly 100meg of memory appeared . Calendar and contacts sync fine, gmail started to sync and looked to be up to date, however refresh bar in Gmail Widget continues to show loading conversations and sync symbol is flashing. Decided to have a look from the laptop again sure enough emails were up to date, came out of the inbox on my laptop to look at the calandar to check that and no problem. Tried to go back into my inbox on the laptop and up popped the good old Account Lockdown due to unusual activity please come back in 24hours
Now I am realy peed off I was just about to clean up my inbox as there are quite a lot of old emails in there but cannot access the account on line.
Does any one have any ideas cos I do not know where to go next.
I only have my one gmail account [email protected] (migrated from @googlemail.com had to wipe and reset my phone for that one a couple of months ago thanks google)
check your sent items and see if some spam bot is sending out kak from your gmail account. Either way change your gmail password just to be on the safe side.
Got back into Gmail account after the lockdown and deleted 580 emails got down to 10. On my desire the loading conversations still shows constantly when looking at my inbox even though there are no more conversations other than those showing, the sync icon was not showing on the notification bar.
All seemed well for a week then this morning noticed my phone was running hot in my pocket, looked at it and the sync icon was on in the notification bar. Looked at the sync menu and lo and behold Gmail was continually refreshing, this managed to kill my battery after a couple of hours. Checked on my work computer and Gmail account seemed fine, put phone in car dock on way home and sync icon came up again on gmail. Got home and checked on laptop and Gmail account is locked down again.
Any ideas peeps.

gmail syncing

Something I noticed...I set my gmail to sync hourly but it does not do that at all. Both my hotmail accounts will sync hourly but whenever I go to my gmail app, the longest time before another sync was like 22 mins. I emailed myself something through gmail once and although my sync settings were still set at hourly, I got the email 10 minutes later. Idk what's going on with that. I just now put it on manually because I'm pretty sure its turning on my 3G more times than it should.

gmail app?
Anyhow, I have my gmail sync every 15min and think it's pretty accurate...
I actually have several gmail accounts and they sync at various times with my main personal account syncing every 15min... And it all seems fine...

He probably means the Gmail email app you get once you configure a Gmail account on your WP7.
slightly different problem with gmail sync
Hey everybody,
I'm wondering if anybody else is having the same problem as me at the moment ?
I've had the phone a few months now. I experienced a few issues with Hotmail and returned to using Gmail. It used to sync and push emails flawlessly, however it seems to have stopped working which is driving me mad.
When I wake up, i'm used to seeing new messages waiting for me (mainly XDA forum news). However, the push functionality has stopped working. I open my inbox, and see a message indicating email is up to date. However, no new messages are displayed. When pushing the sync button, the inbox is synced and the new messages are displayed, despite the settings set for "as items arrive". Highly annoying and not very productive to have to check for messages manually.
I played around with the settings trying various options, I even deleted the account and started over again (which was a pain re linking contacts etc, all to no avail.
Can anybody help me to restore my push email please ? I'm getting really cheesed off now.
Thanks
Garrickus.
Could it be possible that your phone had synced with G-mail 50 minutes before you sent yourself an email, and then you received it 10 minutes later, after the scheduled hour?
BUMP
go to email account settings and check if it is showing any errors. happened to me once. I re-entered my username passoword and the error went away. Perhaps this is due to Google getting very picky these days as many gmail accounts are getting hacked.
Why not just leave it in 'push' mode? Unless you have a lot of emails every hour, push email uses less data than polling. Gmail's exchange activesync isn't exactly rock solid. Back in WM 6.xx days, I have to reset my account every few weeks.

[Q] Email Sync Issue

I am having a weird issue with email syncing. I have several email and exchange accounts set up with syncing scheduled for every 5 minutes (and push for the exchange accounts) with peak times disabled so that it is supposed to sync every 5 minutes 24/7. I have this exact same setup on my galaxy s3 without issue.
The problem is that 8AM and 5PM everyday syncing stops and will not continue automatic syncing unless I manually sync one time. For example, email was syncing every 5 minutes as schedule before 8AM. Now once it turns 8AM, it does not sync automatically anymore. Around 9AM, I check, and the last sync is anywhere between 7:55AM and 8:04AM. Now once I manually sync once after 8AM, the phone syncs every 5 minutes until 5PM. The same problem occurs again and the phone does not automatically sync until I do one manual sync.
I am on my home wifi network at both times (8AM and 5PM), but it occurs regardless of wifi or mobile data, and I have ensured that master sync is enabled, and under the data usage settings, auto-sync data is enabled, and restrict background data is unchecked.
I have tried restarting the phone. I also cleared all email data and cache from the application menu and deleting the cache from recovery. I then renetered all my email accounts, and the same issue occurred on the dot at 8AM.
My phone is rooted with CWM recovery, but this issue occurred before I even rooted my phone. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
No one else has this issue? I find that hard to believe. I installed the Wicked ROM, and the same exact issue is occurring as in the original stock rom.
Did you try to enable peak times and under peak settings set to every 5 minutes? I don't know as I have mine manual to save battery, couldn't imagine how quick my Battery would die pushing e mail every 5 minutes

Yeah I did try enabling peak times every 5 mins but it didnt work. Battery life isnt too bad, I work nights now and it lasts the entire 12 hour shift with moderate use.
I have isolated the issue. It seems like having multiple exchange accounts causes this issue. All my exchange accounts are outlook (ie hotmail). So after I removed all of them except my primary, it is now syncing without issue. This is a serious bug that was introduced in the GS4, as my GS3 does not have this problem.
I am curious is anybody with multiple exchange accounts having or not having this issue?
