There is no definition of what XDA is, nor the purpose of xda-developers.com.
There are two brief descriptions on the Portal.
One at the top, and one at the bottom.
Whilst I admit, this is a bit lacking, most people know it's an internet phone forum for hacking and modding devices.
The "About xda-developers" is for discussion about the site, not a definition.

Right, as Dave points out, we make this clear on the Portal, assuming that people go to the main page first, then go to the forums (for those that are first-time visitors).

Yes I was looking for that description!
Is there a chance to have it back again?
Actual super brief description not really reflects what is XDA

It's still there for those that are not registered. To see it, log out, clear cache, and refresh the forum index. See attached =D.
That is not the original description of what was XDA, Mike should remember this
Hope we can have it back, I think it´s very important to know where and how all this began
There's a main page? That's bad isn't it. I've never seen it. Lol.

I GET SICK WHEN I SEE THE GENERAL DISCUSSION THREAD
the general discussion is full of LG,Samsung,Sony-Ericsson threads and posts about roms, apps, whole bunch of stuff which we don't support because they aren't htc
some guys/girls asked for separated threads for those listed above, but they didn't get them because they aren't htc products
and now they are clearly allowed to post about those devices in general discussion
(because you don't stop them)
so when we look it in technical way...it is spamming,as talking about cars,pc's, estates is
in general or any other thread (except for off topic thread)
PLEASE STOP THIS by removing those threads or by giving them a section, either ways let's keep the forum clean and cool....and easy to use and navigate
the third option is to give us shovels to dig our way out of omnias,i780-s,x-perias and whole bunch of crap
please think about this and let's do something
thanks

Off-Topic is the Apropos Place for this.
Ultimately though, General is a good place for non-HTC products. Most people stay within their own section.

well we aren't windows mobile developers,at least it's not our name...we aren't support for wm devices, but for htc,as it's said in the welcome screen nad short "site about"
Welcome to xda-developers.com
This site is about certain PDA-phones, made by a firm called HTC in Taiwan. Their makers named them 'Wallaby', 'Himalaya', 'Blue Angel', 'Wizard' and 'TyTN', but almost nobody knows them by those names. The mobile provider O2 sells them under the brand-name 'XDA', and that's what we had in our hands first. They're also known as Qtek, MDA, SX-56, Hermes and many, many other names.
Since we develop software for it, we need information, and nobody seemed eager or ready to give us what we needed. So we 'reverse-engineered' the devices, found a lot of information, and shared it with the world. But as our site grew we realised that lots of ordinary users were also suffering from a lack of support. They started using the xda-developers forum to communicate and before long the forum was as much a user forum as it was a developer forum.
We hope that you will enjoy this site and find it as useful as we do. We encourage you to donate or otherwise support this site. Of course absolutely all proceeds from donations will benefit this community.

just kidding.
i think it's ignorant and somewhat elitist to completely deny non-HTC devices service here. We do have a forum for the XDA atom, which was NOT made by HTC. It was, however, carried by XDA. The world isn't static, and it's ignorant to say that the internet isn't either. We've opened forums for even the least used HTC devices, so we should definitely consider giving non-htc devices their own forums, especially given the number of people who have them.

admin opinion:
I have no issues whatsoever with the thread but I agree that off-topic might be a better place. Though this forum is for HTC made devices it doesn't stop us of discussing any other trivial matter as long as it's in the right section (whether that be the best brand of coffee, the speed of our dsl line, the color of my avatar or a different device)
We will not at any moment open forums for non htc made devices on this forum, it would open the floodgates for way too many devices and make this forum too general and unmanageble.
Best regards,
Flar

Unfortunately the life of a mod can be overwhelming at times, we can't be everywhere all the time. If you have a problem with a thread and want to bring it to our attention, you could send a PM.
We will evaluate the options and take the action we feel is best.

As jimmy says mods do have their own lives and can't be everywhere all the time, it helps if you help point out stuff like this.
Consider the fact that some of our mods spend up to 14 hours per day here, most of that time spent moderating...
Also consider this is vacation season and for a lot of the mods (and users) this time of day is the time you start thinking about going to bed, with mods being on vacation all of us have a hard time coping with all the mod work as it is, a bit of patience will get you a long way.

They have said it will get an upgrade to 2.2 but have not set a date. the post url is basically saying what we have known about for a few months now.
I am not too sure why people keep creating new posts about the same thing
There is literally nothing new here!
We don't need "confirmation" that Froyo is coming for the Desire, because the HTC "test" ROMs that have been kicking about for the last few days are clear evidence not only that it is coming, but also that it is almost here.

I'm no fan of the growing plethora of posts like this, but it's to be expected given the growing excitement of what we might see with the official release. That said, a post with a link to further comment on the release is really harmless.
Regardless, any post meant in earnest should be free from "deletion". I mean deleting offensive posts, things attacking individual members, posts meant to intentially mislead the community and anything with straight forward malicious intent are one thing, but deleting member posts just because they add to chatter would just undermine the whole community. Who would dare post something for fear of being deleted and labelled "that guy".
While I think the OP misinterpretted this article as a confirmation, I don't think this topic is without merit. An interesting side note, perhaps.
This is in the general section where it rightly belongs. If a lot of people get up in arms about the "hype and innuendo", maybe we should have a separate section of the forum for "rumours" or something like "just passing it on". Barring that, I for one would be saddened to see a decimation campaign to weed out all the posts that a small group finds to be without merit. Just my two cents.

Yes i would agree with you a bit, however it can be possible that because of the huge potential of people clicking on the page where it says that Froyo is confirmed just drives authors ad revenue.
So if it was actually posted in one of the many olds Froyo posts, i would be ok. But that particular blog had no new info. I mean even google demonstrated that Froyo runs faster during i/o. So to sum up. I think it should be in the guidelines no to post to the website that would benefit author himself. I mean its kinda spam. And it just uses extra space and bandwidth of the xda, therefore its a waste of resources.
Well i have seen this (Froyo update for Desire in August):

Indeed, its a nice rundown of info which is why I decided to mirror it here. This fartcape guy is just been a ahole, probably because his only source of social interaction is when he trolls a post and waits for a reaction, he needs to get laid and some friends.
Windscape, almost every thread in this forum has been ruined or derailed by your arguments and insults. You rarely have anything of any value to add, your arguments are often slavishly pro-Microsoft to the point that they become nonsensical and you seem to be incapable of responding to anyone with any respect.
If you can't control your temper or avoid trolling the forum then I suggest we'd all be better off (you included) if you just kept your opinions to yourself and refrained from posting. There's no point to this forum if every thread is going to be filled with nonsense posts from you.
Actually, copying and pasting an entire article is illegal as it's copyright infringement. You're permitted to quote sections as that's considered fair use. Having it reproduced here removes their ability to make money off of the ads to keep their site open.
Angry much? If you were the originator of the content then it's fine to do copy and paste it. But it's inappropriate to do that for someone else's work.

I put the author of article at beginning of work so its not as if its trying to claim it or anything its simply a mirror with link to source.
And whether you think its inappropriate or not is your problem not mine. I simply dont care.
Also it should be fair to mention when I wrote my post, he had invalid BBcode, wrong links, and didn't link the source at all.
But I'll leave this one alone, even I still think the article isn't very up to date.

The post has been edited now anyway because of little girls crying so pointless discussion.
I think this forum is the greatest for modding our phones. Many thanks to all the developers and the XDA staff!!!
I am still a noob even after 2 years of reading and installing some of the customizations on this forum. Some of the threads I read through need a lot of clarification. Most of them just assume everyone has knowledge of what to do and write just a minimalistic install forcing anyone without such knowledge to ask questions like, How, therefore getting snide remarks added to the posts unnecessarily.
My suggestion to you, XDA, would be to add and sticky a glossary and description of the processes that are needed and have to be performed thus eliminating the recursive and negative posts others likely post about noobs. All they have to do is point such a person to the correct link, the glossary.
I have searched through this site looking for such and all I could find was a single thread asking the same.I apologize if this is in the wrong forum.

That link doesn't provide anything. It's cluttered.
My suggestion is a single post so a user doesn't have to go all over the net (Google) to find something he isn't sure the editor/poster has efficient knowledge of. Such as, if I said to you I know how to tear your phone down and put it back together, would you trust me?

Two examples off the top of my head:
* You're talking about something legally dubious.
* You want to relay your experience of, for example, your mobile operator/manufacturer, without them being able to track you down.
An even better one: whistle blowing.
As per anywhere else on the internet, if in doubt then don't post. Also, if you're unsure about the legality then it especially shouldn't be posted on here.
It all sounds a bit paranoid to me, but that's just me I could post whatever I want about my provider and they'd never know it was me (if they even cared). You're as anonymous as you make yourself.

As per the forum rules, anything illegal is just closed or deleted. Even piracy is legal in some parts of the world, but we delete piracy & warez links and discussion etc.. Obviously judgement has to come into the decision sometimes, but usually if there's doubt then it goes.
