So I was trying to see the current posts on the forum from my phone last night, but for some reason opera mini wouldn't let me, so I did a search of the forum to try different links when I saw this site, that gives people free user names and passwords to our forum, it says is for people that don't want the hassle of registering with us , can use these and come and go here. I don't know if I'm overeacting about this but I personally wouldn't want someone getting their hands on my username and password, and abusing it and getting me banned from here.
Now I'm hoping that this are usernames and passwords of people that no longer want to come here and are giving them to this site, and that is not that somehow the're stealing our usernames and passwords.
Here's link.http://www.bugmenot.com/view/forum.xda-developers.com
that's incredibly f'd up. the jeep forum that i'm on is there too.
I've heard of it and used it once before for another site. It's shady but it is a spammers paradise. I think the only reason I used it was for the inability to get an email reply because registering was temporarily down.
lmao, at the op.
BugMeNot is a great website.
I use it all the time for forum's where I know I prolly only visit once in my lifetime.
yes, i cant believe you've never heard of bugmenot before. Its user submitted U ... the people that submit usernames are doing alot of people a huge favor.

You see I have no problem registering to a forum and becoming a member if I'm looking for info or apps/games or to chat. and you say that users that submit are doing people a huge favor, in what way, so people can go into these forums and sites without effort or contribution and just mooch from everybody.
Oh well I guess it's just my opinion.
I guess your just really young and naive.
so, let me slowly explain the benefits of this site.
Say I was searching for a song on google.
I then found the song on a forum, but to download it I have to be a member.
Now, instead of wasting 10 minutes of time registering for a site that I will never again you, I can just go to BugMeNot or use the BMN firefox extention.
Get it?
It does not effect the forum, cause I will never go there after the inital time.

First of all I'm not young and naive, I'm 33yrs old, married with 2 kids, own my house and three cars, How about you?
and second like I said before if a forum or website has something of interest to me , even if is one thing I'll become a member, I've done it before, I have gone to sites and forums and thought maybe I won't come back but I end up browsing thru, just to check things.
Look, I guess the're are some people that might find this beneficial, and that's cool, and my main concern was on how they aquired such u/p , but if they are being shared by the people that made the acc. then I guess we have not much to worry about.
One of the things that I like about forums like xda or NECO is that there are actually people at the other end of the user names. If I post something, the responses to that post are coming from people that I may or may not trust.
Point being, if multiple people are using the same login and only doing so once to post a questoin or comment on something then you end up with user names that post a lot of crap or you can have folks trolling and trying to sell their "insert junk here".
Take the time to register. Even if you never go back to the website who cares. If your time is too valuable to spend 3 - 5 minutes registering a username and password then you're not very likely to be trolling forums.
I used bugmenot on xda a copule of times, then I registered!

BugMeNot has helped me MULTIPLE times, and it benefits both the forums and the users (to a degree). Say I wanted to use a forum just for one thing, I simply go to bugmenot.com to find a username/password. I won't get unnecessary spam, and prevents unnecessary accounts being made on the forum.
And I don't even know why I typed all that^... lol -_-"

Will do. I used to administer a forum on a different topic but this type of stuff was a problem for us too.
I have no idea if this is even possible in vBulletin. I tried to google but didn't come up with anything so it might not be... but I figured I would make my case anyways.
It would be awesome if a senior member was capable of moderating their own thread. I know that as a rom developer for the cdma hero and a kitchen programmer, a thread can VERY quickly get out of control. It makes it impossible for someone that hasn't checked the thread in a few days (or hours) to find anything.
I think rather than asking a mod to take time out of their day to try and clean up posts isn't nice to them either.
So I'll ask... is it possible to add a feature for a senior member to be able to moderate a thread that they are the OP on. If it is but xda doesn't want to do that, what are the negative side effects that I'm not seeing? I figure if you are able to limit it to senior member and to their own threads then any shenanigans from this new power would mostly be avoided.
Thanks all!
This has been mentioned before. AFAIK, we have not yet found such a plugin.
Thanks,
Dave
The only negative side is that, "Senior Member" is just a title, I think you get it after like 100 posts? If this was to be implemented it should be like 500 posts to become Senior Member.
It does seem like a good idea, I think though, that some people would delete their posts that offend and then they can claim that they never said anything. This would have to be very carefully thought out and planned if this is possible to implement, because I know some people would use it for bad purposes.

What the OP is asking for is the equivalent of being able to throw someone in jail while that someone is in your house doing something that you believe shouldn't be done in the first place.
I think Uncle Ben said it better... "with great power, comes great responsibility"... and I don't believe that half the Senior members in this site are ready for that .

Yeah, thats why I said its not a good idea.
You can already help the moderators by reporting anybad conduct, it makes it easier since all they have to do is look at the post and edit it or delete it or ban.

So it seems that everyone agrees, just with the caveat that the "senior member" should be a higher number of posts. Or possibly even a second level at 500 or 1000 posts, and THAT'S the level you have to hit in order to be able to moderate your own posts.
I actually tried to go post on vBulletin's support forum but it appears that you need to buy support in order to even be able to create a new post there? Kind of crazy. Ha. I'll keep looking to see if I can find a plugin, because without it this doesn't even exist as an option.
Thanks for the feedback all.
Edit: I don't know enough about vB's settings but according to ChopSuey (a vB coder) this should already be possible: http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showpost.php?p=1919340&postcount=11. What he says makes it sounds like that would allow someone to modify any thread, and not their own. But you would think a coder of the app would know. Ha. Maybe it requires version 4.x? I know xda has been talking about upgrading for a while.
We're looking for a way in vB to allow certain people (of a given usergroup) to moderate their own threads. If anyone finds a way, please let me know!
it wouldn't do to simply count posts
there's users having an amazing amount of redundancy, repetition and even irrelevance (chat like) accumulating their post counts that wouldn't be considered with this method alone
the title (if differentiated more fine grained than junior, member, senior) would only be meaningful if it was combined with e.g. a user rating (reputation), derived from other users

That would require members to rate other members and even though the ability to do that exists (at least for threads), hardly anyone does it.

Indeed, its a nice rundown of info which is why I decided to mirror it here. This fartcape guy is just been a ahole, probably because his only source of social interaction is when he trolls a post and waits for a reaction, he needs to get laid and some friends.
Windscape, almost every thread in this forum has been ruined or derailed by your arguments and insults. You rarely have anything of any value to add, your arguments are often slavishly pro-Microsoft to the point that they become nonsensical and you seem to be incapable of responding to anyone with any respect.
If you can't control your temper or avoid trolling the forum then I suggest we'd all be better off (you included) if you just kept your opinions to yourself and refrained from posting. There's no point to this forum if every thread is going to be filled with nonsense posts from you.
Actually, copying and pasting an entire article is illegal as it's copyright infringement. You're permitted to quote sections as that's considered fair use. Having it reproduced here removes their ability to make money off of the ads to keep their site open.
Angry much? If you were the originator of the content then it's fine to do copy and paste it. But it's inappropriate to do that for someone else's work.

I put the author of article at beginning of work so its not as if its trying to claim it or anything its simply a mirror with link to source.
And whether you think its inappropriate or not is your problem not mine. I simply dont care.
Also it should be fair to mention when I wrote my post, he had invalid BBcode, wrong links, and didn't link the source at all.
But I'll leave this one alone, even I still think the article isn't very up to date.

And the "do not care" remark had nothing to do with me caring if you cared or not, I mean I dont care about whether its "appropriate" or not.
The post has been edited now anyway because of little girls crying so pointless discussion.
I haven't had this problem until recently. Has something changed? But I find it really annoying and discourages me from answering queries.
The problem I have is the way XDA now combines recent posts - even when totally different subject matter. i.e. if I answer 2 questions or make comments in 2 areas one after the other in a close time frame, XDA combines those posts into one post. This is really annoying.
As a reader of the posts it is also so very hard to follow. Two or three responses in the one post...
So just now I did not bother responding to some quires. Well actually I did try, it combined them, it made no sense, so I deleted all but the first. Obviously not the desired result of this change. (and I've now deleted a couple more that made no sense at all). Frustrating!!!!!!!!
In my opinion not a good idea at all

That's like saying: "Please remove that feature". If they allowed users to have a choice, then most would "opt out" and the feature would seem as if it doesn't exist. This would allow those users to double (or more) post and just spam the thread.

This prevents <10 post user spam.
But, and this is the key thing, there's no actual reason for EVERYTHING to be in separate posts.
The only justification for wanting this to be different is if you are trying to increase your postcount, whether by spamming, or wanting to just get it higher...
It prevents a user constantly bumping a thread as well.
There's nobody stopping you answering a few questions. But it will automatically combine the posts, a bit like multi-quote does (which is the preferred way to answer several questions).
This is a standard feature used on a wide range of forums including vbulletin.org. By merging together sequential posts from a user, it reduces resource usage, as there's less individual posts needing loaded.
^what he said......
I'm sorry but I just don't see the issue here.
If you are responding to multiple posts in a thread, use multi quote. Problem solved.
Is there enough spam to warrant this?
Yes. There is enough spam to warrant much more stringent methods of preventing it imo.
This is a simple feature which greatly increases the readability of a thread.

Exactly what they said (below). Using multiquote is not hard (I did it in this post ). If you want to answer multiple questions, do it in one post (using multiquote). It is unnecessary to make 2 (or more) different posts to answer 2 (or more) different questions when there is a way to do it in 1 post.

I beg to differ, it reduces the readability of the thread enormously and is really annoying. That's why I'm raising it.
Please show me the evidence of spamming that you mention. I have not seen it myself.
Surely if a person was spamming a moderator could remove it and warn the spammer. That's what I've seen on other discussions and boards that I have run.
It would save this heavy handed autocratic approach - punishing us all.

Perhaps, but it's illegal in many other countries and this is an international forum is it not? Personally, I think banning any such discussion is too heavy handed based on the fact that it is NOT illegal everywhere. But the mods/site owner has taken a different view.
So are you saying nobody can answer or the mods wont let anyone answer

Ok, question, is there "Freedom of Speech" in the country where the xdadevelopers servers are located?

What are you asking me for? It's got nothing to do with me. I just visit here, I don't make the rules
Maybe you should PM one of the mods, or raise this on another board or thread?
This is a common misconception, there is no "Freedom of Speech" outside of the government trying to restrict it. This forum is provided by a company who make rules about whatever is discussed here, this applies to all other social communities as well such as Facebook, Tumbler, Twitter, etc. They can make whatever rules they like, ban people for breaking them, delete posts that break the guidelines etc, and you have zero recourse other than leaving the group.
I'm fine with it like I said sorry for posting will no happen again was just looking for information did not mean to stir anything up will not ask about it again. I respect your decision. Thanks again

this is a bit of a pointless comment, freedom of speech is a lie people like to believe, as soon as you enter private premises (web sites fall under the same heading) you have to follow the "house rules" so you may have freedom of speech by local law but the rules of the establishment they can kick you out and ban you for saying the wrong thing. as the people who own/run these establishments are held acountable for what they allow in their establishment, so really freedom of speech is nothing more than an idea used to make people think they have the right to say what they want, if there truly was freedom of speech there would never need to be a language rating on TV and Movies as people would have the right to say what they want when they want. it's the same as you wouldn't be able to be prosecuted for things like racial abuse as freedom of speech would protect your right to voice your opinion on those groups.
funny part is there is info on doing this so google play will see your phone as a different phone so you can download more apps but we cant help someone out that wants to use his phone and not show what he is using. Great.. Who ever asked the main question just search for the info by looking on how to change your phones info to download stuff i dont know if that will work but i hope it does.

It's a completely different thing though.
Changing the phone "type" so that you can download different apps, is not contentious and doesn't have any sinister undertones. Changing the IMEI is what criminals will try to do with a stolen phone. Blocking the IMEI number on the network is the only way the network operators have to block stolen phones. That's why it's illegal in most territories, because it's synonymous with criminal activity. Yes there are non-criminal circumstances where a genuine user may wish to change the IMEI number for his phone, but they are usually out of luck. I'd like to own a hand gun here in the UK, but I am out of luck with that too!
Discussion of changing IMEI is prohibited on XDA.
Freedom of speech does not apply here as this is a private site operating under its own rules and guidelines.
