Root/ Froyo question - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I currently have a R3 Rom with A2SD on it. The only i rooted was that i can install A2SD on it to have apps on the SD.
But since froyo will allow for apps on the SD, is it better for me to install the original froyo rom rather than an aftermarket?

The stock froyo roms idea of a2sd is crap!
It only allows you to put certain apps on SD, and then only after the app developer has made it possible in their app.
You can flash a custom froyo with the old a2sd. A good combination in my opinion!

You do realize that's how it's supposed to work, right? I've had no issues with it, and neither should anyone else who has at least 2MB free on their device.

So how does it work, does it work with every app?

No, only those that have the option enabled by the dev. Just go to Applications > Manage Applications. Then, if you tap on one, you'll see a Move to SD button. If it's not greyed out, and the app isn't/doesn't include a widget, you can move it. If not, no. You can probably move most apps you find under Downloads there.

Apps on SD with Froyo update

It seems that on Froyo update, there will be the option to save apps on ths SD.
But how will this affect us 2.1 owners with apps2sd installed? Will there be a process to move the apps to the SD or will we have to re-install all the apps? Or is it to early to say as froyo is too new?

You can be almost 100% certain that there will be no official process, because what you have done is an unofficial mod.
You will need to backup your apps and reinstall.

How can I remove system applications

I tried searching, but got mixed directions and methods that ended up confusing me.
Running Baked Snack 9.7 and there are some apps that I would like to remove, mainly every trace of Sense.
Tried removing them through ES file explorer to no avail.
Try this method. I am using DC and there is an application called "DConfig" that allows me to ban sense (if I desire). If you don't want sense, I would suggest flashing a ROM that doesn't use it (like CM6). CM6 is a Froyo ROM too which is a huge plus. I would use it but I'm a bit attached to sense at the moment. Hope this helps.
Titanium Backup is the easiest way IMO. Just tap the app and click uninstall

Never knew this feature was built into titanium ..... this method is probably better as I will have a backup of what I remove assuming I remove something that I shouldn't lol. I wonder if there is a thread somewhere that gives a list of stuff that is safe to remove through titanium. Time to search

RootManager work too

Desire Memory Space

Ok, so I finally upgraded to Android 2.2 and moved all my applications (except a few that don't work like that) over to my SD Card thanks to the hack.
Yet I still only have 43MB/147MB...Whats the deal?
Go into Manage Applications and delete data and cache of your apps. The Dolphin browser had something like 50mb of user data for me. Stopped using it now

its because you using legacy apps2sd as apposed to apps2sd+, legacy apps2sd only stores the .apk on the sd card, where as apps2sd+ moves alot more of the program data and cache' to the sd card

that rom dosent have apps2sd+ i suggest if you want more disk space, you try a rom with apps2sd+, like leedroid or nextsence but remember it wont work if you dont create an ext partition on your sd card

Well, eventually we won't need Mod Install or apps2sd+ to do it right, developers will make there apps do it auto? no...
Seems like I have enough space right now, much more then I did before hand, with 2.1. So should be fine. I just found it weird.
*and no way to add apps2sd+ to this ROM?

How does one go about installing Apps2SD+ manually, without resorting to flashing a custom rom (as there are some members here who, like myself, prefer stock roms)?

if your rooted you just need an apps2sd update.zip and flash it from recovery, becareful tho most of the ones ive seen on google are for eclair and wont work with froyo, maybe post a thread in the android development section asking someone to make you one, it wont take a skilled person long

I am rooted (via UnRevoked), and have even got a nice class 6 card already partitioned and waiting.
Surely if it wouldn't take a skilled person long to do it someone would have done it by now? I've seen a few requests in these forums since Froyo was released asking how to install apps2sd, and yet they all either get ignored or pointed towards a custom rom. It's almost as if the people who know how to do it want to keep the secret to themselves!

can I just rooted w/o using custom ROM?

Which one is the official Desire ROM?
The statement makes no sense. Yes you can root but stay with your original ROM

It is becoz I have previous experience on N1, when I unlock and root my N1, the original ROM can't run properly which force me to d/l a custom rom in rush.
This time i need to help my frd to root his Desire and he want to have App2ext and remove some unnecessary bundle its the official ROM, making system backup using Titianium etc. Sorry for making the question unclear.
When rooting with Unrevoked you will keep the rom you had.
If you want A2SD+ you need a custom rom.

ic. if i keep using the official ROM of Desire, can i removed those Unused bundle apps such as twitter, plurk etc.?
Thanks
Yes but it wont free up space on /data if you remove them from /system so you end up with no extra space for apps

Unless, I think, he does the Nandroid backup first of the rooted Stock ROM, do an S-OFF, then apply MTD partition hack/adjustment, and then restore the Nandroid..That should take care of the space problem, without even a need for A2SD+. Shouldnt it?
He would get some extra. But still deleting apks from system would not do anything unless he deletes the apks, nandroids, sizes /system, adjusts the partitions, then restores nandroid.

Exactly..That was my point..If he does that he neednt even install a custom ROM, I've seen people spare around 300mb (I think) for their app folder in Internal..Does away with need for A2SD+.. I envy those people with devices with 2 Gb internal..

Link2SD and updating the OS

I tried upgrading my system with Link2SD installed (CM7 nightly), but after I done that, every application that has been previously linked to SD, is invisible to the sytem. I am only left with generic android shortcuts that don't work.
I tried reinstalling boot scripts, quick rebooting - nothing worked.
I cannot afford reinstalling system from scratch every time I upgrade it, because I have too many things installed. This has never been a problem when I was using DT A2SP.
I hope someone can help me with that, unless the only way to do that is to go back to DTA2SD.
Have an ext partition. Flash CM7. Download S2E app on Google play. Configure S2E settings, Reboot.

Why s2e? Is it better than Link2SD or DTap2SD? And if so, why is it better?
I believe s2e is specifically designed for cm7. It is very easy to install and configure. I've been using it for a while now and have not had any problems. DL from market and give it a try ;-)

Because it works. Its fool proof and flexible unlike Dark Tremor you can move back things around with ease (provided that there is still enough space on the phone).

How is DT less flexible? As far as I can see, S2E has the same options, minus swap and zip align that DT has.
S2E can move application data if you want to. I can't remember if DT has that feature as well.
