I seriously need some tone help! - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 General

I realise that this is not a new phone but it is to me (£27 off Ebay!) and I've had it two days and am pulling my hair out!
HOW do you change the text tone?
HOW do you change the alarm tone?
I have converted them to .wav files and copied them into the /windows folder and I can even see them on the drop down list but it wont let me select either, just goes back to 'default'.
I don't ask for much in life but this little want seems to be way out of my reach and I'm fed up
Please can someone help - in idiot terms as I'm just not getting this!!
Thank you in advance

in general, all sounds that are not the call ringtone itself, are changed through "sounds and notifications" in the settings. however, the call ringtone is the only one, that can be changed to whatever you like, the rest of the sounds offers you a reduced choice of predetermined sounds. i am sure, that 3rd party software can do more than that but that is the standard state of all blueangels, no matter if you are running the windows mobile 2003se stock rom or a cooked rom of say, windows mobile 6.5.5 from this forum, the standard sound settings are still the same (i am not sure about mp3 ringtones in wm2003 though).

Thanks for your response Tony - it would probably been quite helpful if I had any idea what a blueangel or stock rom or cooked rom is........
I thought that I was almost there by actually being able to see the tones I'd converted and transferred....it would appear not!
What is this 3rd party software you mentioned? How do I get that and how do I download it to the phone? Can I do it via the computer and data cable or is it something I have to do via the phone itself?
When I said 'idiot terms' I really meant it!!!

ok, let's start at the very beginning. HTC, the hong kong based manufacturer of phones like ours, used to distribute their phones in europe and america not under the HTC brand name, but the network providers branded the devices with their own names. therefore, the T-Mobile MDA III or Qtek 9090 or O2 XDA III or E-Plus PDA3 or vodafone VPA III or SPV M2000 are all the same device. to bypass confusion, xda-developers name them by their HTC name. the name for this device is HTC BlueAngel.
about the roms:
your device probably looks something like this:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
that operating system running on the device is called windows mobile 2003 SE. since the device was shipped with that OS, that system is called the Stock ROM or Shipped ROM. Some time has passed since the release of that OS and the device and since 3rd party software suppliers don't offer any software for that old OS anymore, the xda-developers ported newer mobile operating systems to the device, like windows mobile 5, 6, 6.1, 6.5 and even newer.
most of the users here flash a cooked rom, meaning a rom containing a newer operating system with lots of customizations, which is why most of our devices look something like this:
or this:
just by the look and position of the start button, you can tell, that comparing wm2003se to the newer versions like wm6.5.5 is like comparing windows 2000 and windows 7 on the PC.
running a new rom makes the device comparable to new devices still in stores or even upcoming devices.
the next thing is the connection issue you seem to face: there are several ways of transferring files and data between the device and the pc, the most common way is using the usb cable or the original cradle, that comes with the device. on the pc, depending on your operating system, you need to install any outlook version newer than 2000 and activesync (on win xp) or windows mobile device center 6.1 (win vista and 7) which gives you several possibilities: synchronizing personal data with outlook (appointments, contacts, tasks, notes, email...) and accessing the device from the computer to transfer files. in general, for transferring large amounts of data, an sd card reader is recommended because it is much faster. you can use sd cards up to 4gb in the device, but only normal sd cards, no sdhc cards.
for many other very basic questions about windows mobile, you should have a look at your device manual, read a lot of threads here and read the wiki here: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Blueangel
for additional information.
if you decide to upgrade your device, please do not consult the wiki, as in some points, it is quite outdated, but refer to the tutorial linked in my signature, it gives you detailed instructions on how to upgrade the device, and many add-on applications.
about your original question: i believe the path for ringtones in wm2003 is \Windows\Ring\ or something like that, when you copy an mp3, wav or mid file there, it should be possible to choose that file both from the phone settings and the sounds & notification settings, but only for incoming calls, for sms, email, or any other sounds you can only pick from a limited list. since that is perfectly fine for me, i don't know, if any 3rd party app can change the sms ringtone, but even if there is one, it probably wouldn't work with wm2003 but only with newer roms. i guess after about a month of using the device, you will get used to it and all of its options, and then you might want to come back and upgrade the device to a newer rom.

Thanks Tony, that made much more send although only your first pic was visible and my phone is slightly different to that one.
I went into O2 today and they said to try converting the tones into .wma instead, so I've done that but still no joy.
If I have to have the predefined ones, why can I see the ones I've put in? Is it just to torment me?!

Power bar on today screen?

I feel kind of silly here. I did a search on the forum, and didn't find much.
I want to be able to look at my phone and see how much power is left. Right now I have to go Start-->Settings-->System-->Power.
Ridiculous!
Am I missing something?
You will need to install some plugin on the today screen to get the feature you are looking for. I personally use PowerCheck version 3.5, which is freeware and allows you to monitor both the battery and memory state.
I have attached a a CAB file with PowerCheck. Just copy it to you device execute it there to install.
dont install this program. i did and I have to hardreset my XDAIIs
Is this a general issue with the Blue Angel (or what device do you have xcalibur)?
Honestly, I have been running this plugin for more than a month on my Magician. It hasn't caused me any problems at all - not even something that required a soft reset. I find it strange that it should cause problems on the Blue Angel but not on the Magician given that they both run Windows Mobile 2003 SE PE. Moreover, this plugin has received almost purely positive reviews on several ppc freeware sites.
I'm sorry xcalibur, but I have ask: could it be that your hard reset was caused by something else than this plugin - or perhaps by a bug in some other software that doesn't work if this plugin is installed?
I have an O2 XDAIIs with ROM Version 1.12.62WWE. ROM DATE 10/4/04.
Try SPBPocketPlus http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/
You can create today shortcuts and put a small block style powerbar across the very top edge of the screen.
Loads of other features as well including the option to make the X button really close apps rather than just minimze them.
Completely customisable as well
anyway, thanks.
Hi!
I remember when i load the O2 Uk ROM there was this battery bar in the today screen, any know what program they use?
I hope if possible it can be extract from the O2 UK extend ROM, i just need to know which file?
I have recently upgrade to the iMate Arabic 1.31 ROM so lost the O2 features.
Alvin
Try this one: TodaysInfo
Hi
Try this on: TodaysInfo. I'm using it on SPV M1000 & M2000 and it works fine with direct access to memory and bat.
There is one TodayScreen add-in where this one will disappeare but I don't know which one. Un/reinstall it and it's back.

I'd recommend Magic Button 1.8. It's supposed to give you control of running programs, but also incorporates a powermeter, as seen in the top right corner.

This is the smallest and nicest I've ever seen. You can also choose the position on the top bar.
No installation required, just copy it wherever you want and execute (\windows\startup is a good place).
Tapping on it you will have immediately all your bat and mem information at a glance.
Cheers.

hi,
this file don't has uninstall option but you can uninstall it manually,
1- go on your pocket pc to windows folder you will find a file called bettery.exe,,, delete it
2- now most important you have to edit the registry because the phone will be looking for battery file every time you reset it and it will give an error because you deleted it , now using any reg edit software go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\init
"Launch250"="\windows\battery.exe" <= delete this key.
that should work.
please make first a backup for your pocket pc, you may need it in case something wrong happened.
Regards.
'Uninstalling' battery_OU
Thanks for the reply; appreciate it. After I posted here, I started looking at files w/in the CAB & found the reg entry. I also thought it's _250 init meant that the corresponding pgm would get started in the order implied (basically about last if I remember correctly). Reminded me a little about the root pcs start sequence dependencies in Unix. So I removed the reg entry, restarted & the upper right icon disappeared. Then I was comfortable w/deleting the windows\battery.exe.
Rebooting, that-all looked fine. So then I thought I'd wait for your reply, to see what else I might have missed, then reply back.
Again, thanks for your reply. I think whoever built the CAB didn't build the corresponding uninstall; kind of 'hacky' to me, but, no harm.
FWIW, I'm using the kbattery executable that 'dave' posted in his post dtd Thu Mar 10, 2005 12:20. Small, works fine, can place in the Start where I want. Shows primary battery strength, which is what I'm mostly looking for most-all the time. Can click it to get more info if I want too (although it shows more detail about memory only).

O2 applications

Well in my search for them on this forums I stumbled accross many versions and different threads, and people couldn't find them at all.
That's why I thought to put these wonderfull apps in one topic.
So far got 3 of them, 2 from some chinese site and 1 from here.
O2 plus has like 3 cracked versions, sms plus just 1, and after 2 days of searching I found a cracked version of phone plus!
To bad I can't find the answering machine yet, media plus nor message plus and menu plus.
Anyone got some more? Might take a look at them and try to make all device versions from it.
Versions (all latest to my knowledge):
O2 Plus 2.3
O2 SMS Plus 1.1
O2 Phone Plus 1.0
Here's the description of the 3:

O2 Phone Plus
O2 Phone Plus is a dialler application that simplifies local and overseas calling. This easy-to-use program enables simpler and faster dialling from your O2 device by reducing the number of steps and keystrokes needed to make a phone call.
•
A special dialler lets you edit phone numbers when you are on the go.
•
You do not need to store the same contact number in different formats and different IDD prefixes.
•
Enhanced dialling intuitively filters your contacts to speed up the dialling process.
•
You can store IDD prefixes, calling card dial sequences into profiles, and insert the IDD prefixes or dial sequences before making a call. You no longer have to carry the calling cards with you.
•
You can block unwanted calls.
O2 SMS Plus
O2 SMS Plus is an alternate SMS application to the Inbox application that allows you to send and receive your SMS messages via a chat style user interface. The feature allows you to view both incoming and outgoing SMS messages or to show only unread message in the same list window. Plus, set up a delivery time for created messages, send and receive vCard contacts via SMS from other compatible devices, and even search through messages for keywords.
O2 Plus
O2 Plus is an application manager that gives you control over the running applications and it comes with 7 Today items that provide the user a wealth of information on the Today screen about operator name, battery, memory, names of running applications, alarms, sound profile, call divert status, tasks and appointments statuses.

Voice camouflage

Hi there!
Is there any software that allows you to camouflage your voice dissimulating a male for a female for instance as it does for PC? Google is not answering to my question...I hope that inside here somebody does...
Why do you want to sound like a girl? Sounds a little perverse to me...

a bit of metabot crawling would have brought it to you too...
never used, never will have a purpose for it , but feel free to have go at it, alternatively you could search for text to speech as this will be more difficult to unmask, I take it these proggies use specific algorythms that can be unscrambled.

No access the the GSM Voice Stream!

I guess "PPC" refers to "pocket pc devices" where as "WM5" or "WM6" devices are now called just that.
Although the OS is essentially the same stuff and the hardware the same kind of architecture, we use "PPC" to describe WM2003SE or below and "WMx" to describe the later devices.
Im just guessing. Therefore PPC devices WOULDNT support GSM stream, but WMx would. Just perception of the acronyms and their differences in real terms i guess.
I hadnt even thought or realised WHEN we decided to seperate "windows mobile devices" and "pocket pcs" out of what each are technically both!
or something.
has anyone used a good freeware "text to speech" app? looks like there's a lot of them to pay for...

Not sure it's exactly what you want, but I've been using this site to convert text to speech for a year or so:

Works well to make notifications for SMS, etc. Just click Play, then save the file in Storage Card/My Documents. Sorted!

Actually I believe they are referring to the difference between PPCs and Smartphones, not specifically regarding OS systems (though they use slightely different operating systems: PPC=WM6 Professional, Smartphone=WM6 Standard). One of the limitations of PPCs is the inaccessibility of the GSM voice stream, a problem that Windows Mobile Smartphones do not have.
I would like some freeware as well

WM Trojan Dialer, a case for sandboxed apps/managed code

As seen here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=650393 theres a game that people have downloaded that is infected with a trojan that calls out to expensive international numbers at midnight,

You realize of course that your [thread] title doesn't match the contents of the thread at all?
Your title purports to suggest sandboxing and managed code, which are both good ideas, and then in the thread itself you talk about restricting the APIs available on the platform to Silverlight/XNA and restricting distributing to the Marketplace, which is a terrible idea.
"Managed code" -- in case you weren't aware -- is terminology created by Microsoft for code that interacts exclusively with the CLR.
BUT IN CASE YOU DON'T KNOW, P/INVOKE IS PART OF THE CLR, SO "MANAGED CODE" CAN STILL ACCESS NATIVE APIS!
"Sandboxing" can refer to a broad range of concepts, all of which are relatively good ideas (although some are more expensive in terms of overhead than others).
I think the best thing that Microsoft could do to prevent attacks like this -- rather than locking down their whole OS like Apple-wannabes -- is to implement the multi-user paradigm of Windows NT6.x and/or Linux on their phone OS.
See the problem -- as far as I can tell -- is that Windows CE is a single-user operating system. Much like Windows 9.x. Which means that processes only run in one context: Administrator.
So any process that is running on your Windows CE device, has full access and control of the device/operating system. This is why you experience so many lock-ups/crashes on CE-based devices.
In a modern multi-user operating system, processes can run in one of two contexts: User or Administrator. The User context has no access to the system itself -- it is effectively sandboxed. It can still wreak havoc in many ways, but it cannot bring down the operating system because it doesn't have the privledges to access the APIs et cetera that it would need to do so. The Administrator context still exists, and the user chooses to elevate processes there when the need arises -- this is what UAC, runas, su, and sudo are for in Windows/Linux.
These are the devices that should be implemented on a phone OS, not draconian lock-in schemes that turn a phone OS into a phone appliance.
Well, actually making phone calls should never prompt for elevated permissions as far as I am concerned.
In the case mentioned above a game has an add on functionality which doesn't play nice, so even prompting on installation (which WinMo 6.5 does), doesn't help matters.
The CLR incorporates a pretty sophisticated permission management but it's terrible to deal with it, even if as a programmer you know what things are about - pushing it onto the end user of a phone in my opinion would be a pretty bad idea.
Cases like this one are exactlly why the way Microsoft intends to deal with software, is a great idea for a default behavior - although I would like to be able to sideload applications.
But honestly, if people could sideload at all, they would activate it in masses, if even for one dumb farting app, outside the marketplace that everyone thought was cool. I'm not talking about devs or Power Users but about people using Google to find: how to get app xyz working.
Pretty soon a situation would arise like the one we could see some weeks ago, when a virus infested lots of jailbroken iPhones in Australia. The problem was that simply after jail break, most didn't change the administrator password of the phone, allowing telnet connections from the phone network.
I don't like the situation that arises with WP7 and I really hope we will get access to APIs for doing actual phone calls, accessing the PIM data, etc. but yes: sandboxing with reduced permission sets without elevation is the way to go when MS tries to change the way WinMo is perceived by many: unstable and easily compromised.

Please copy / paste / timetravel / this conversation back to 1975, to a non-suspecting group of consumers, along with the PDA and tell them this is how we go about calling eachother in 2010. Sandboxed AntiTrojan/Virus Administrative Rights Calling Application Programming Interface and some more of that.
For sure they will protest and kling-on to the old round dialer disk phones.
/end of topic
It''s about control. As many other said and Microsoft implicated, they need more control over the brand/expierence.
In the early months of 2002 you could take your Compaq Ipaq 3870 and hook it up to a Bluetooth GPS, a Bluetooth Phone with GPRS, and have navigation- and web based realtime GPS Tracking software running at the same time.
That is 7 years back. Making that work took 5 minutes (manually configuring COMport splitter).
I sincelery hope that developers will get access to the system at a level that makes the above possible.

OverviewApplication allows to receive files via Bluetooth or send files via Bluetooth.
Also application include feature to auto install received REG RGU and XAP files.
So you can send XAP file from PC to your phone and it will be installed at the end.
Same with REG/RGU - you can send a file and it will be applied to registry. Note file must be in UNICODE format. ANSI files don't supported by application.
Application has some unresolved issues:
If send operation was canceled, other side device will save the already received part of file instead of show "canceled" message.
Sometimes it's impossible to receive files without opening Bluetooth settings.
Seems Bluetooth go to some low power mode while state is still ON and CONNECTIBLE.
To send from one WP7 device to another WP7 device you may need keep the destination phone in Bluetooth settings page. Otherwise the first phone can't see the second.
Already paired devices list isn't implemented.
Was tested on phones: *Samsung Focus R1.3
*HTC Gold
*HTC Spark
*HTC Schubert
*HTC LEO

wow! Installs fine on Omnia7 but I haven't got another phone to attempt sending/receiving.
This is a huge step to Windows Phone development!
Thank you
That amazing THX
cool , and the intergrated file explorer is soooooo fast , really great work
Thank you very much for big business
Testing it out.
I can send just fine, and the file browser works great. Adding an easy photo chooser or something might be nice, though.
As a thought, I can only send files to the device when the Bluetooth menu is open under Settings. Is this intentional? It's not really a problem, but I found it a little interesting; otherwise the device doesn't seem to be visible on other Bluetooth devices. Sounds like part of the WP7 design.
EDIT: I'm able to send files if my computer already knows about the device, regardless of if it's in settings or not. Cool stuff! It's a shame bluetooth is so incredibly slow, though.
Nice work
I tested too and workig fine. Before start app we have to run BT transfer in phone and paired with computer. For good work app must be open. One more time THX Cottula.
it works great ! Focus 1.4
Work great in my HTC MOZART! Send and Recive!
