Hey all... just a quick question to set my mind at ease please...
Just bought a desire on ebay .. supposedly unwanted t mobile UK upgrade... brand New in box...paid 270 for itwhich I thought was a decent price...
I'm just a little worried about stuff on eBay though and wonder if there's anything I should check for to make sure its ok... any known problems I should be looking for or a reason someone would want rid in a hurry... as it was a 1 day sale.. many thanks for any help.
Nobody can advise what to look for? Is it at least possible to check how many minutes the phone has been used for ? (
Bought a Black HTC Desire on ebay.. £350.. box was still sealed - all good. But the chap selling it did live at the top of my road! LOL
Unlocked - just about to flash it!

thats a good deal, i got mine off ebay for £295, the main things u wanna check are the obvious, check the screen and the casing, check the battery for damage, turn it on and make sure you desire dosent have the pink screen tint problem, put it under some heavy usage and see if u get any random reboots ect and lastly plug it in while using it and make sure the device duznt get too hot, if your happy after doing all that ur sorted lol
If it's a stolen phone, it is possible that the IMEI has been blacklisted.
See here for more details.
Regards,
Dave
When you get it use the dialler to type *#*#4636#*#* then tap usage statistics. This will tell you how long each application has been used for. Obviously if it's brand new these should read 0.
It should be wrapped in a cellophane type wrapper that folds in all weird ways around it! It's all one piece. I would do all the usual checks, and look closely at it to ensure it hasn't been dropped etc.
Don't forget if it's a Tmobile upgrade then it will likely be locked to Tmobile and require an unlock code if you aren't on the same network!
It should come supplied with a 4gb micro SD card installed in the phone, the battery, usb lead, wall charger that you plug the usb lead into, earphones, and a few wee booklets. All the leads, charger etc should be in sealed bags.
Thanks all.... I've been using it since last night and seems allls well... gets quite warm at the.base of the back .. but I assume they all generate some heat ...
Checked the timers.. and sense was showing 3 hours.. but as I been using it a day that obviously me.. was in box all cellofaned up.. and all bits in sealed bags..
What's the pink screen problem ? Is it very noticeable ?
The 1 thing o did notice is there was an option to have something light up on receipt of mail or sms. I assume its the center of the optical tracker but I haven't noticed it light up once... should it? And hoe can I check? Thanks again for all the advice.. had set my mind at ease. )
The light for notifications is the one you see when you charge. There is no light at the trackpad.

If it is the case, is it then possible to "unlock" it by flashing another ROM onto it? Just wondered cause I'm looking at one that might be locked to vodafone (upgrade).

No. A new rom gives you new phone software. To unlock it you need to go to Vodafone, or the cheaper and better option in my opinion, buy a code online!

I have the o2 xda orbit and I never tried to modify it (change firmware, rom etc) or upgrade to WM6. Everything is original the way that it came. I have been using the orbit for about 6 months now and I had bought it off ebay.
Just yesterday I was chargin the orbit through the usb cable and I removed it since i had to go out and i just put it in my jeans pocket and after 5 min when i took it out there was a blank white screen. I took the battery out overnight and turned it on in the morning but still the same thing happens. The images below show exactly what shows up on my screen
I dont know what to do The minute i turn it on that is the only screen i see. No windows logo nothing. I removed the sim card and memory card. But still no luck. Can i change it through warranty eventhough I live in Canada? ANy help is appreciated!! I would be glad to give more information to you if I can.
If you know of any other forums where i can get better help, please let me know.
Switch it on but hold in the voice record button when you do it, do you get a Red/Green/Blue screen?
Maybe, it saw a ghost?

nope same blank white screen with a line in the middle.
Looks like a serious hardware death there. Did you buy it off an ebay shop or private? If from a shop you may be able to make a warranty claim, if not you'd have to post it to a repair centre and cross your fingers.
I am presuming here that you have tried a Hard Reset too, ie holding down both softkeys whilst resetting, then releasing the softkeys when you get a confirmation message.
if i press the reset button nothing happens. Orbit only responds to the power button. I bought it off ebay and hence the problem. Do you think it is only a screen malfunction and if i buy a replacement screen I should be able to solve the problem? is it easy to replace the screen by myself?
I DONT KNOW IF IT'S WORK for you BUT... I work in a big shop where a lot of clients buy differents models from Htc and, 2 months ago, somebody have the same problem (with 2 lines) WITH a Tytn. We have flashing his tytn with the original rom and the problem has gone !
Have you try to make a connection with you pc ??? If activsync work...(maybe the bootloader work and ... of course, you can't see if the htc is running because you screen d'ont work for the moment)... you have nothing to loose if you try... If activsync dont work, try to put a original signed rom from htc to the root directory of your microsdcard and follow this tread from the xda-wiki section : http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Artemis_SD_Card_Flashing
REALLY, I'M NOT A PROFESSIONAL BUT I REALLY THINK THIS IS MADE BY SOMETHING WRONG (FOR ANY RAISON) IN YOUR ROOT DIRECTORY AND THE SCREEN CAN'T WORK NORMALLY... oF IT'S MEABY DUE TO A BAD CONTACT BEETWEEN YOU SCREEN AND THE "MOTHERBOARD" FROM THE PDA.
I HOPE THIS CAN HELP YOU.

Could you give me step by step instructions on flashing the xda orbit rom. Out of frusturation i tried updating the orbit to WM6 and it successfuly updated according to message on my computer screen. So i have wm6 on my phone now but still the same problem.
I exctacted the file and put it in the root of my sd card and pressed the voice button and power button. Now how do i know that the ROM is being flashed? (since i just see the white screen). Even for the orbit should i just name the file on the microsd card as ARTEIMG.nbh ?
Thanks for all your help..but since i am new to this could you please explain teh process in more simpler terms?
Thanks again

Sorry to tell you dear friend but your LCD is cracked, you can see it very clearly on the first picture, bottom right hand corner.
simple way to test if true is to connect to the pc and see if its recognised.
sorry to give you some bad news.

i dont mind the bad news. So if i just buy a replacement lcd from ebay would that work? How hard is it to replace LCD? Is it something that i can do by myself? What should i be buying THIS OR THIS. You guys know of any other cheap places where i can buy lcd screen? My computer does recognise the orbit once i connect it to the computer and activesync successfuly completes the operation. So i am guessin there is something wrong with the lcd screen.
If You Put Out Your Battery More Than 30 Second, It Make The Same ?? And In The Same Place???
NOW YOU HAVE NOTHING TO LOOSE... if is it the screen, you must change it...
But before, try to flash one more time your artemis with the original wm5 and, for sure, begin to make it supercid before (so you are sure you dont make a second problem !).
The client with a same problem (but not with the little trace at the right side from your screen) is happy now ! Play also a littlebit to make hardreset, softreset, usb bootloadermode ... And maybe you will see the color coming back!
I said one more time, i am not a professional for this problem but, "still trying" is never bad.... And for the screen... if you command him, you must waiting... so... try it first and if you have no more solution to try, send the pdaphone to htc... And if it's the screen, pay the replacement to htc and dont make it you self ( ebay?? are you sure 100 % the screen you buy its working???!!!??? ).
Yeah, if your computer recognises it, it'll just need a new screen.

Ok, first bit, there is a section on this forum on linking where to buy a lcd with touch screen, and there is also a guy who has done this, you can read up on it, but it will take you some time and hours removing the covers ( trying not to damage them ) and also hours of painfull cleaning, dust is the worst thing you could ever imagine,as soon as that nice lcd comes out of the package you will have dust all over it and once you have the phone back together the smallest amount of dust trapped inside will drive you crazy.
The best action for you to do would be to send it off for repair, in the end you will have your phone fully working.
the price of the replacement LCD is around 80 Euro's + sending cost.
the price you have to look into for a repair could be double.
but look into this carefully and ask yourself these questions.
1. Have you ever done this before.
2. Do you have the right tools.
3. Do you have a lot of paitience.
4. Is it worth doing it yourself and causing more damage to the phone ?
if you cannot say yes to all of these points that the solution is to send it off to repair.
hope this helps.
Regards.

i've just sent you a pm! please check
Does anyone know, where can it be send for repair to?
I have a bricked phone (even bootloader is not started).
And it was bought at eBay, so no any warranty or so.
This is XDA Orbit and I'm in Austria, where O2 has no representation.
Could you, please, advice the companies/possibilities to reapir it (chip change or direct reflashing - not via USB).

Thanks for letting me know..i though it was a pretty simple thing to do by myself. But now I definitely dont want to take that chance. I will shop around for some local cell repair shop. But since this phone is not available in canada I dont know where to go. Does anyone know of a repair shop in Toronto?
I would think the quickest turnaround would be throught HTCamerica. Its located in Houston Tx...
http://www.america.htc.com/support/service-repairs.html
thats just my two cents, turnaround time is like 5 to 7 days after receipt... if they service your phone, they do p3300, you would have to call to find out

Is there any way to tell for absolute certain that a phone is new?
I know it's easy these days to reset counters and such, so I was just wondering if there was any way to tell for sure if a phone someone sold on ebay is indeed new and not just a clean used or refurbished phone.
Thanks for the info!
impossible !!!

u can't verify if it's new, cause you only need to hard reset the phone to get a brand new phone (OS is as new) !!!!
anyway just look at it,if it looks new, it's new, otherway, it's an old phone !
salut !
Look around it and specifically at the silver line around it.
If the phone is old, the silver line always goes off.
Slt
Yea the silver line is a way to tell and also, look if the chrome color is wearing off the middle button...
My Trinity was stolen out of my car after my window was broken. I reported to ATT and the SIM card was in-activated right away. However, they acted "dumb" and refused to put a flag on the Trinity's EIM# as theft/stolen. I spoke to three different representatives without any satisfaction. I KNOW for a fact that if someone has an unpaid balance, they would flag BOTH your SIM and EIM from being used. SprintPCS will flag a stolen phone for you, but ATT will not from my experience.
One of the representative told me, "What difference does it make? You no longer have the phone..."
The second representative said, "I don't understand what you want me to do. You already got a replacement phone." (I'm actually using one of my old cell phone.)
The third representative said, "Your initial question is in reference to reseting your email. I have assisted you with that issue. I don't know anything about stolen phones."
Keep in mind that I explained my situation to all three representatives about my break-in and about using my EIM# to prevent someone from selling or using the phone for new service.
In a competitive cellular market, I guess ATT does not care if you use a stolen phone to get new service--it's one more account for them.
Please beware of ATT.
GPS Theft Tracking Software
It's for this very reason that I would HIGHLY recommend GPS tracking software for your phone.
Mobile Justice is a free Open Source version, and there are other PAY alternatives.
Mobile Justice monitors your phone for a SIM change, or waits for you to send your phone a specially coded SMS message. When it recieves it, it will do one of a few things.
1. Pop up a message you select on the screen of the missing phone "Hey Dirtbag, Gimme Back My Phone" or whatever you choose. (Aside from the fact that this might cause them to throw the phone away, I also would rather not let them know I'm coming. I want to knock on his door, look him in the face, and demand my phone back! As soon as he's finished changing his drawers. )
2. Send the GPS coordinates of the missing phone back to you.
3. Both 1 and 2
I just ran a test with this software and it's AMAZINGLY accurate! I typed the RAW coordinates into Google Maps, and it showed not only which house the phone was in, but which room in the house it was in, even when I moved it around. VERY COOL!!!
Pay Alternative:
Bak2u
This software monitors for a SIM card change and automatically sends the phone's NEW Phone Number and SIM Info to predetermined phone numbers that you choose. It does all this in the background so the thief knows nothing.
Mobile Justice can also be setup to be unnoticeable.
Of course, if they do a "Clear Storage" or Flash a new ROM, then neither of these programs will be there to work anymore.
PS: Sorry about your loss, and ATT's lack of help!
this was a big problem in the uk, but phone crime has really dropped due to the phone and sim getting blocked as soon as reported here.
just installed Mobile Justice to my phone...thanks for the link
such a shame your handset was stolen. i'll presume you had this hidden from view when left in your car?
just thought i'd mention blocking the IMEI only prevents that handset from being used in that country providing the service providers have an agreement amongst themselves and will not prevent the phone from being used abroad (unless under agreement too).
Its also (easily) possible but illeagl to change the IMEI.
(posted via phone)
have you ever thought of an hard reset?
then your installed programm is useless...

Yes, that's why I mentioned it in my first post. I would love to find a way to burn it into the rom too. Then they would have to flash a new rom to remove it.
Also, to test it, just send yourself an SMS with "your code +g" give it a few minutes to warm up the GPS and it will send you the phone's cords.
Well hope the memory card wasn't too expensive.
Damn! they'll just send a kill handset command through the sim. Not a lot you can do about preventing someone from changing the IMEI on your phone. It's gone, be thankfull you will get a replacement. Some people dont get insurance and pay for it big time.
BUT I had no idea Mobile justice was around. This should be a compulory addition for all cooks out there. Your phone is going to be a little easier to find if this is installed.
there are quite a few programs like this. Others are "Ultimate Theft Alert" and W.I.M.P - Where Is My Phone"
I find ultimate theft to be the best.
These items also dont show on installed programs list so the only way to get rid of them is to hard reset.
EDIT: Also, be mindful to put someone elses number to be messaged as your sim will be stolen... has been done before!

Hello Guys, im new to 10 forum but in the past 12 years i used only HTC devices so im planing to leave my m8 and jump to 10
My question is this: I have a offer for a HTC 10 in brilliant cosmetic condition no sratches no even single sratch on the panel perfect as brand new condition never been droped or watered but the phone cannot switch ON.
The owner of the device have it from around 3 months and tell me that he was trying to SIM UNLOCK it somehow even he don`t know what he was doind coz he is not very familiar with things like this and NOW the phone its seems dead.
Its a Shame because is even under waranty but was locked on a network.
Anyway he is going to sell it for about 50 USD im asking you
Do the deal worth it? and what can cause the reason for this DEAD HTC 10 after trying to Sim Unlock it.
I think to try eveyrhting posible to give this phone a second life and after a week will be able to take it and see whats goes i don`t know more info i mean do i have access to Recovery or Fastboot since the device is not here till the next week but my question is do this worth it and what can be the cause of NO switching ON anymore.
The owner sayd that before to attempt this Sim Unlock the phone was worked perfectly fine.
Thanks in advance for the advices and of course when is with me will Update the thread with more info about the device.
Thanks

Do the deal worth it? and what can cause the reason for this DEAD HTC 10 after trying to Sim Unlock it. Well that's enitrely the problem with buying phone not working. You can't troubleshoot all the internal hardware like you can a PC and test what works and what doesn't work. you would need a working HTC 10 to swap parts with to test.
That said my opinion, forget about this phone. Go buy a working phone on swappa, ebay or HTC.com they are having a $200 off sale and you would have the peace of mind, knowing that you have a working phone. swappa would be best if you wanna negotiate a good deal with a seller.
Or go to ebay - factory unlocked 10's are $400 delivered all over the place.

I know what you are saying but listen
I know this guy is a friend of mine i know the device is brand new he bought it before 3 months in this case when is bricked after atempt to Sim Unlock im sure its SOFTWARE related problem becuase like i sayd the phone is in Mint perfect cosmetic condition no a single dust or scratch.
I know that its HARD to really Brick a device forever on a software level.
So i know also how much cost a brand new or second hand HTC 10 the goal here is do 50 Bucks worth it coz if i think stright only the Rear and Front Panel and the Displey in my opition worth more.
Im asking you what can cause Broken phone after attempt to Sim Unlock.
Thanks in advance

If its software why cant your turn the phone on? If its software you need the phone to be able to boot to download mode to flash RUU. I think your friends is lying to you. If its still under warranty why doesnt he return it back to the carrier? How about he give you the phone and if you get it fixed you give him the $50. If hes your friend he would understand.
Hello,
I'm a proud owner of an HTC 10 I bought a few months after it was released. It's my current daily driver but the battery has gone really bad and it's no longer under warranty. I could still sent it to HTC for battery replacement but I don't know how much that costs (it shouldn't be cheap) and I'm sure they will wipe out everything, which I don't want.
I'm thinking of buying a new phone, but...
I don't really like anything recent out there from any brand (even HTC).
The flagship phone prices nowadays are ridiculously high.
From an hardware point of view, I don't think I'll lose much if I don't go with a 2018 flagship.
Given that, I'm thinking of getting a brand new (I'll make sure I'm really getting a brand new, I think I can find a few on eBay) HTC 10 for around 300€. Do you think this would be a nice deal? There's a hounded reasons why I love this phone compared to what's in the market right now... The battery sucks, granted; and in another 1.5 years, it will suck just as my current HTC 10 sucks, but I'm not paying 700€ for a phone, so...
What do you guys think?
P.S: I'll need to S-OFF/root this device, is SunShine still the way to go? Are there any limitations on the firmware version required for this to work and should I take that into account before buying?
You can buy a new battery and replace it yourself if you're inclined to do so. YouTube has videos.
I thought we got a 2-year warranty?
I have a 10 that is in mint condition. I’ve had it for a year but it’s akways had a case and screen protector, if you’re interested

I'm definitely not inclined in doing so. Have you seen the nightmare it is to tear down the HTC 10 and assemble it back?

I thought we got a 2-year warranty?

I doubt HTC will honor the warranty since my device is S-OFF and rooted. Either way, I've asked if they could replace my dying battery on my phone WITHOUT wiping the data and they said no. So it's not an option for me right now.

Thanks, but unless it's brand new, sealed, I'm not interested.
In case this helps, I had the same problem with the battery. I contacted HTC (Switzerland) to decide whether to send it or not and this was their reply. You can try it.
please unplug the phone from charger - turn off the phone device - press on Volume up + Volume down - Power on button all at the same time till the phone started on , please check the battery indicator ,then follow as below :
1. Restart your device
2. Turn on Airplane Mode
3. Connect your device to the charger, and charge it fully
4. Set screen brightness to Max.
5. Set Screen Time out to never.
6. Dial *#*#3424#*#*, choose battery and Charging run down test, and follow the instructions.
If the device loses more than 40% of battery in an hour, then send your device to the repair center

Oh, yes, it's a nightmare but if my choice is between a paperweight and a learning experience/working phone....
Contrary to popular opinion, rooting/S-OFF doesn't automatically void the warranty; it is one of htc's selling points.
They're going to throw it on a bench, along with a bunch of other phones, try to RUU it and if it fails, run a diagnostic, replace what it tells them to, then RUU it, and send it back.
I would copy all my data off of it, RUU and wipe it (relock and S-ON if it doesn't cost anything), and put in a warranty request.
I certainly wouldn't write it off.

All that will tell me is the state the battery is in and if I should send it to them for repair or not... I don't think I need such test though. I take the phone from the charger (100% charged) and I don't even turn the screen on for a while and when I pick it up, it lost between 5 to 10% without doing practically nothing. Also, sometimes the device reaches 30% and turns off and enters in a boot loop. I boot into download mode and it shows 1% instead. Yeah, the battery is ****ed and needs to be replaced.

Looks like a very ****ty service to me. However, I don't even have official HTC support on my country and I have no idea if they send it to HTC for repair or if they do it themselves, either way, I don't think it will be cheap.

I just checked my phone on https://imei24.com/imei_check/HTC/ and it's no longer under warranty. I bought it off eBay, not from a certified reseller or something.

Still, I can't afford to be without my phone (even if I have to charge it multiple times a day) for a couple of weeks (if not more).
My idea was to buy a new one, migrate all my apps and stuff carefully on my own time and when that's done, send the old one for battery replacement. Depending on the cost, I could accept the repair and sell it used. If I could get ~100€ profit out of all this, I could have a brand new HTC 10 for ~200€ or something which is still a very nice phone and could last me at least more 1.5 years.
