Droid Eris 2.1 leak!

So, some chinaman working for HTC decided to bless us all with some Eclairy goodness, complete with drivers and all! If I'm not completely mistaken this should be very possible to port over to the Hero, so let's see you take your best swing at it, devs, you can do it! I'm even going to try it for myself, I'll post it if I can get it to work (Mind you I'm no experienced dev, but I'll give it a shot anyway, can't wait for a flawless 2.1)
DISCLAIMER: Do NOT flash the rom in the thread, it will brick your phone. (I didn't flash it, just thought I'd say it since some people don't seem to tell the difference between hero, sprint hero and eris)

I downloaded the Eris 2.1 leak when I woke up at 6am...

Who thinks these leaks are endorsed by HTC as a backdoor to public beta testing, no strings attached? Remember the 2.73 build "leaked" about a month before public release.

So the Eris is that close to our hardware that it can be ported then ?
Good news all round I imagine, both for Sense ROM's and AOSP ROM's.
There will be some busy chefs over the next few days, and a hell of a lot of flashing going on

Can't believe this has been deliberately corrupted that is awesome (as a joke). I would not be surprised at all if HTC have leaked this on purpose, companies do that all the time (including music companies) however they would never admit it.

I asked head office for a leak of the 2.1 Hero rom last week. Broken or not broken... I'd fix it.
They completely ignored me!
A rom thread with almost 400,000 views and they ignore me - lol.
Anyway, we have something now.
I just wish I had the time over the next couple of days to port it. Someone might beat me to it, but by Saturday, I'm hoping it'll be Villain 3.0 FINAL.

There is an uncorrupted version in the thread, people have flashed it to their Droid Eris(es) and it apparently works just fine

Although protected apps are gone in the market
but that's pretty much the only "bug" i found on that thread.

Again, a very easy fix.
Mihali (sp) fingerprint should sort that on Hero.

This is why I donated to him, when there's something new he's always there, messing about and putting down the time for producing great roms!

With any luck, this should mean Villain 3.0 Final
What I mean by that is, this will be the perfect base, and if we get everything working as it should - this will be the perfect base rom, needing only minor, incremental updates until the official rom is released.
Then... I get to play around all over again with villain 4

So basically this was exactly what you were looking for really to make a perfect version 3 ahead of an official hero 2.1 release

I'm following the Eris thread closely. It's definitely not bug free
So far, someone's reported -
- Soft reset of phone using Gmail Push notifications...
- Google Earth fails to load (I suspect OpenGL issue)
I really hope this isn't the case.

hmm, just see how many people report the same issue, maybe that someone didn't install correctly, we already know how every installation is different on different phones.
Lets hope if there are issues they are issues we already know how to fix

Are there any ( current ) reasons NOT to root?

Just wondering - there seems to be across various threads hints at reasons not too, such as iffy GPS & battery performance hit.
Anything I should be aware of before I try ( just made a Goldard )

If you screw up the Apps2SD installation, you can kiss your USB functionality goodbye. It's less concerning because it's affecting very few people, but it's more concerning because nobody really knows why it happens in the first place. They're still working on possible fixes.
I've experienced better battery life, myself.

Search! Read! Post new thread anyway? Sigh!!!
I came on the forum for a look around about 45 minutes ago, ever since I have been reading and reporting threads (as per recent mod request) that shouldn't exist in the first place.
Please search, read, learn instead, far more fruitful and doesn't damage the forum usability for everyone else.

Go easy on the OP.
It's not that easy to search and find the older threads because few people tag their threads. In this case he did fine the threads but perhaps he wants to know in the context of THIS phone? Also, this thingy evolves very fast so an updated info is probably warranted.

Sorry j-zeus if I was a little over zealous there. This was about the fifth thread I had come across. I'm sure you can appreciate the irony of stating in your OP that you had found other threads on the subject but that you had decided to start a new one anyway.
Anyway, I didn't mean to be rude or combative, I just wanted to point you in the right direction for future posts. It really does make life easier if the forum is well organized without multiple threads on the same subject.

One reason NOT to root now that I could think of:
Google IO is only few weeks from now (May 19-20), there they will most probably announce Froyo, Android 2.2.
It would be wise to wait what will come out.
APP2SD will be native if they include it in 2.2 (I [email protected]!).

No worries - I do know how to search and did. I find it somewhat over the top as it throws up 28 thousand snippets of information that you have to trawl through only to find it's out of date already - and for a non techie like me this leads to masses of confusion. I post the question to get the latest feedback, not stuff from 2 months ago ( also as posted it helps others too ).

1 reason is: it wipes your phone and you get a random other rom, which might have stuff missing you are used to.
sense for example is missing for sure.

This is the kind of thread where my sig really makes a lot of sense...

I agree the search facility is not the best on this forum and after searching for a few hours its easier to give up as i have normally lost the will to live by then.

and it's funny that there's an exact same thread right below this one.

Sense is only missing if you... pick a ROM that's missing Sense. That's a very silly and misleading thing to say.
The default rootedupdate.zip that's provided with the unlocking method is just the stock ROM with root; it still has Sense. Half the ROMs on XDA for the Desire still have Sense. Saying you lose Sense when you get root is just flat-out false.

Thats not on really, I did try the search before I added my post and I was easily able to find threads relating to this topic which is where this question should have been posted. Even the OP acknowledges the existence of other threads in the.. er... OP.
I added a note to the J-Zeus in case he/she felt my response was over zealous as upon re-reading it it does sound a little sarcastic and he/she has responded amicably. The thread has been moved since my post.
I have been using this forum ever since I got involved in hacking my XDAII (new account since then as lost my details) and the desire section is the messiest I've seen, I guess because this is the first iPhone killing android phone and has proven to be unbelievably popular. I was only trying to ensure this forum remains usable, ordered and collaborative.
What I said was in line with the forum rules, your response isn't.

But once you are in a thread, at the top of the OP there is the option to 'search this thread' which may help out in some searches as it is, of course, limited to the current thread only.
In any given forum section, in the same position, there is the option to 'search this forum'

By no means guaranteed but hopefully! I am sure they will make it exclucive to the N1 for a while. Even if there is no official update I rather suspect it'll find it's way onto the device through the Devs here and else where.

IMO that would be very strage if Desire wont get Froyo and would be dated after two months.
But I have seen Google Nexus One with Desire's OS, which means we will be able to put Nexus One's or Magic's Froyo if it wont be offered officialy ?

Desire HD/Z Port camera error. Need help fixing camera.

So as everyone know there is a problem with the camera on htc desireHD and desire Z ports, so please who have an idea or knowledge of making drivers, help us. We will very thankful.

It's amazing how very few people seem to care about the new sense roms, their is almost no interest at all, i think everyone is waiting for the official one from htc because of the fewer bugs? I think what leedroid said about the the roms not being the final builds has also got alot to do with the fact that very few devs are working on getting the camera sorted, maybe we should remind everyone how long the official froyo update took!

My only problem with the new sense is that I don't to put part of the system on my sd card. If a rom can install fully on internal memory then I'll use it without thinking.

Anko184, sorry, i think my previous post was a bit unclear, i mean't the official new sense for our good old desire's, maybe it's just hot air, but i've read a few post saying that the new sense will come to our desire's, can't remember where though...

there have been conflicting reports about this
but from what can be read in HTC statements, they most likely wont port it to Desire or older HTC models
considering all of those mobiles have lower memory, even HTC would need to struggle to port those large ROMs to older devices (and i doubt they would release ROM which required to be installed on SD card and not on the internal phone memory..)

I checked lib, bin and other files which contain "cam" in name in HD ROM and old Desire ROM, and all of these are almost the same size. So changing it won't do anything with camera.

Moved to Q&A as not development.
This is a know issue everyone's aware of and the devs are working on afaik.

There is still a lot of work to be done. There is no need to doubt whether this is genuine or not, even Kernel(not sure whether it is the right term) can already be compiled, therefore 2.3 version will be easy. I can even change the version to 2.8, therefore there is no need for me to use the source of 2.1 and the skin of 2.3 to photoshop. If you guys do not wish to use it I will keep it for myself so there is no need to argue about whether this is genuine or not.

*only* thing that worries me is that we havent followed inc s update patch (they have official sense 3.0 we doesnt)
and while smarter folks then me might be able to do something with the kernel source, i certainly cant
but the camera files should fix all that stuff for aosp id imagine

I don't think we need to worry about getting it for our exact phone, but as long as we have for the incredible S. At least, our dev's will be able to get some of the hardware working completely.

either way we want an ota for us as that gives us 3.xx kernel source at some point
