Okay... on my previous phones (HTC with WM, Nokia with symbian...) you could have data connection active, but the phone would use it in X minutes/hours (just as often you setup everything to update, like mail).
With android, I have noticed that data connection is active all the time. It may not make transfer constantly, but the connection is active. Why is this so? Have you all noticed this too?
I have noticed that by turning mobile connection off, I can get my Desire battery to last x3 times longer then leaving it active (example: 20 hours with constant data connection on, 2-3 days with data connection disabled all the time).
Why doesn't the phone use the connection only when needed, and disconnect?
get a program called juice defender that will activate the connection by a schedule i.e 1m of active connection every 5 minutes.
I had that program, no problem in that aspect. My question is: why is only android doing this? Why android must keep the connection active all the time in 1 hour, when it will really need that connection for a minute every hour?
I am not asking for a third-party solutions, I am talking about general android function

Hello again Reg/Software techies!
Is it possible to make a Reg tweak / software to auto detect Wifi ?
so that i wont have to set it up every time?
10x in advance,
That would be lovely...
There are tools available to turn it on/off at certain times of the day - but I guess, without it being "on", it can't detect the presence of a network, and thus it is a catch-22.
Best I can think of, is for it to be turned on every x minutes, and set to disconnect if it isn't connected to a network for >1 minute - thereby it would keep cycling around, but you could feasibly walk into a WiFi area and not pickup signal for as long as "x-1" minutes. Lets say you get it to check every 10 minutes, you could wait as long as 9 minutes after walking into a hotspot before it picked up the signal and stayed connected.

That's a really interesting thought. I wonder how well that would work (at least in terms of saving battery).
What I think the original poster wanted, however, is to give the Universal the ability to automatically connect to each unsecured network that it finds without any user intervention. Battery life aside, you can leave WiFi on all the time, but if it detects a network it prompts you before it connects.

Brett knows what I meant
although - it would be nice to tell the device:
search for an unsecured wi-fi connection every 2 minutes.
if it disconnects - in another 2 minutes it will search another connection anyway!! 8)
(as for batt. life - true. HOWEVER- if its a prog. that does it, it doesnt have to be ALWAYS on...)
Well, is there such a programm or option for this?
any 1?
Hi,
I'm wondering some things to optimize my battery life, but couldn't find any answers so far:
1) When Wifi and APN both are ON, Wifi will get priority. But the APN-setting is actually still on. Will it drain the battery, or should I always turn APN off when Wifi has been connected?
2) I have set Ultimate Juice (or Juice Defender) to turn on APN every 10 minutes during 1 minute to check for updates. But when I turn off APN, Juice Defender can't turn APN on himself to check for updates. That means that I have to remain APN ON. Doesn't that drain the battery, or is Juice Defender turning APN off on his own way?
3) I noticed that when the screen is off in standby, Android will turn off Wifi and APN. People are saying you should turn off APN and Wifi when not in use, but since Android turns both off while screen is off/standby mode, what's the use of turning both off manually? I think you could even turn them on all the time since they will get turned off when the screen goes black.
4) e.g. You're in a situation without any internet access. Apps like the Friends Stream, or Mail want to check for updates every 5 minutes. the consequence is they can't update because there's no internet connection. Does that action always drain the battery some more?
wtf no one??
under the wi fi advanced settings.. you can set wifi to never sleep... this should mean that your not using the apn connection...
I think apps try to update and if they do not succeed, it will be cancelled. I doubt the apps will continously check for updates until they get a fix. Same with Weatherbug. I sometimes see Weatherbug last updated hours ago, even when I have had internet access for the past hour (I have set it to update every hour). That was when I had unchecked 'enable always on mobile data'.
There are options available for wifi under advanced menu to set it to always stay on, or shutdown after 15 mins of sleep.
There is also an option available to always have data connection on. This will keep data connection alive even if phone is set to sleep.
Do you mean "mobile data connection" everytime you call it "APN"?
There's WiFi and that; two ways to access the net which pull power. WiFi can be disabled quickly and easily through the widget. So can the mobile data network: http://yfrog.com/0ymobilewidgetp
Leaving it to 2G when you don't need 3G or when 3G reception is bad saves much power. I'll need to do more experimentation before I can answer your other qs with assurance.

Does anyone know where to set the wifi "not to sleep" during stand-by. I try to find the setting but cannot find it.
Currently, it seems like HD7 uses data connection (GPRS) to sync e-mail , calendar, etc. instead of wifi while phone is in stand-by mode. (I turn off data connection and my inboxes are not syncronized during stand-by even I turn on wifi)
It means i still have to pay for the data connection usage even i use wifi at home.
Wi-fi will stay on during standby if you plug your phone into the mains. This is to stop your phone running itself out of battery power, which it would do quite quickly if Wifi stayed running all the time.
So your answer is, plug the phone into the charger when at home.
Thank you very much
Dear friends,
My Defy seems to be dropping wireless from time to time. Here's the whole story:
It's a green lens Defy running PAYS v6.0. What I've noticed in the last few weeks is that Skype calls drop sometimes (when the screen is off) followed by a relogin to skype (usually takes like a minute or so to relogin). Then I also noticed that when I turn on the screen the wireless sign disappears and reappears like it would be reconnecting.
Other 2 phones and 2 computers have no problems connecting to my router, even skype. Skype works fine on my Defy's mobile connection.
I've had Juice Defender installed but I've disabled anything related to wireless and then froze it. Wi-Fi sleep policy is put to never. Other programs that I have and might have anything to do with wireless/data connection: 3G watchdog, 3G mobile hotspot, widgesoid.
It looks like it's something about the wireless, but I cannot understand what. The only thing I could do is try another wireless network at my parent's or something...
Thanks in advance!
PS: I keep on mentioning skype because it needs constant data flow.
Later edit: Might, by any reason, have anything to do with the fact that I'm using a French release instead of a CEE one (like I "should")?
Hello,
I have started to have a problem in the last couple of weeks. I have to use my internet with tether because the internet at my accommodation is very slow. The problem is that when i am using tether, be it wireless or usb, the internet connection seems to drop after 10 minutes or so. It does not always happen, sometime it can stay fine all night but other times it can do it every 10 minutes or so.
I have tried it with a few different roms, it works better with CM but is not as quick as it is with LeeDroid or Android Revolution. AR disconnected the most, and i am using LeeDroid now and that is about every 10 mins.
There are no signs of the disconnection, for example the phone is still connected to 3g, and the wifi (or usb) connection is still active.
P.S. i dont know if this is related but i cannot use my phones internet when the tether is active. Like, i cannot download anything from the market at the same time as having the tether activated.
Thanks in advance for your help.
