Hello every one, I've got a question (maybe already asked but I find nothing sorry) about de Desire:
My N1 was stolen a few weeks ago and I have the possibility to have a Desire. But the fact is that I don't want sense and I'd like to have the official Google OTA update, without waiting for HTC.
So my question is: is it possible to root the desire and install the same rom as on the N1?
Thanks by advance for the answers, and sorry for the english, I'm a poor french frog
Just look around the forum
If you look around in the htc desire development forum you'll find a lot of custom roms and how to's on rooting, s-off and theming.
This thread is in the wrong place
N1 ROms are essentially ASOP roms, they're all over this forum.
But if I take a custom rom, I won't be able to have the officials OTA Google updates, like it was with my N1, and that's what I want : /
see, the google updates are like cake, and the custom aosp updates here are like cake with chocolate sauce on top of it.
ok (I love cake so I love the image^^), if there's really no way I'll take a tour on the forum and check which ROM seems to be the best for me, thanks for the help.

althought the desire and n1 are similar there not the same, you cant just put the n1 rom on the desire so when google does an ota update, you'l magically get it on your desire too, the cake anology is good as generally the asop roms are more or less the n1 roms with tweeks to make them even better ( like overclocking etc) id recomend the defrost rom, it has ota updating built into the rom and am pretty sure as soon as gingerbread comes out we'l have it on the desire at the same time as the n1 people have it ( also you have the option of having a sense rom which is nice, always good to have options)

Crazy. You can NOT run N1 roms on the Desire
To OP: just use CyanogenMod

Thanks a lot everyone!
Hello fellow XDA members!
Following yesterday's news about the working camera on the Desire HD ROM ports, I started thinking about the infamous official Sense 2.0 update for our Desire.
In particular, I was thinking about which features of the new Sense 2.0 could be left out for our Desire since we have limited NAND storage to store the whole ROM as is. Unless HTC manages to compress the ROM, there is no other outcome for us than to have a feature or two less than the Desire HD and Z owners.
And here comes the question for all of you guys..
Which of the features of Sense 2.0 could you live WITHOUT?
Personaly..
1) I could live without the themes which I suppose take much of the space needed by the ROM, or at least have a limitation as to how many themes we can have on the ROM.. unless HTC decides to put them on the SD card.. Same goes for new/existing backgrounds..
2) I could also live without the camera effects too.. we have Photoshop on our Androids now so I see no need to have it on board the camera UI...
Keep it on topic.. keep it clean.. and let the discussion begin!! (not intended rhyme here... )
*NOTE* Since I havent posted on the appropriate threads.. I am therefore saying a great thanks to "snq-" for doing his magic on the camera module and "robocik" for creating the wonderful RCMixHD ROM and making our dreams come true
Can't find any answers on forums so here goes...will a future 2.3 OTA update for DHD be by carrier or phone manufacturer i.e by HTC direct.
I got mine p&g on 3 network but don't use the 3 sim, I use an o2...so how wld any OTA update arrive, do I need to keep putting 3 sim back in the phone from time to time or when I check for updates will it come from HTC direct?...I take it that it wldn't come from o2...
Thanks
**Emailed HTC..they say they wont be releasing any OTA update, it will come from carrier, and for me to contact 3
***Just spoke to 3...didnt expect much from them, according to their c/s call centre assistant in Mumbai, the latest version of Android 3 network has is 2.1...dimwit, I bought the phone from 3 and had 2.2 already on it, which he disputes..obviously he knows better than me who bought the phone and uses it
Have a look at the software build. If it's x.x.405.x then any updates will come from HTC directly. Otherwise you'll have to wait for the carrier to modify it first.

We are all new to it at some point but the whole process is actually a lot easier than it first sounds. Just read the instructions and FAQs until it's clear what you need to do. See my reply in the thread linked below to save you searching and to save me typing it all again!:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=920238&page=2
As for things not working in custom ROMs, well that was maybe the case when the DHD was first released but it's certainly not the case now. Lets take Android Revolution HD ROM as an example - Everything works as it should and the performance of it blows all stock ROMs away.
There are other 100% working / stable / every day use ROMs too, like LeeDroid ROM which also gets great feedback from the people who use it.

Many thanks...maybe I will have a try...getting bored with Froyo cos of all the 2.3 hype so wld like to see what the fuss is about...cant read anything on android forums without them banging on about gingerbread this, gingerbread that...and an OTA from 3 or HTC isnt worth holding breath for
Ah... now most fully working DHD ROMs are also Froyo, but don't let that put you off as they will all be like night and day compared to stock Froyo. You jsut have to have a quick look at the release notes and change logs to see the differences.
However if you really do want a slice of tasty Gingerbread look at the CM7 builds, but this is where you will find things not working or unstable etc as they're experimental.
Another option to relieve your Froyo boredom is to flash one of the custom Froyo ROMs and then start customising it with mods and themes etc. See post 2 in the Android Revolution HD thread for some really cool stuff, and also in the first few posts of the LeeDroid thread.
Can't anyone implement sense into 2.3 aosp is it difficult?
Because the HTC camera beats the Android camera in my opinion

We'll have to wait for HTC to release the official update, or wait for another model HTC to get 2.3 and then be ported over to DHD.
It will happen, we just have to be patient... something I learned waiting for the 2.1 update for Hero!
In think custom 2.2 would be better than stock 2.3 anyway. On the other hand, custom ROMs based on 2.3 are something to get excited about

HTC! there's potentially a lot of work with the framework and API changes from Froyo to gingerbread and I wouldn't expect personally to see a GB sense ROM until HTC have ported it
It's confirmed by Frandroid (FRENCH SITE):
No updates for older HTC smartphones
We have just had confirmation from a representative from HTC, former Sense HTC smartphones (HTC Desire Desire Desire Z and HD) will not have access to the new HTC Sense (2.1).
HTC prefers to focus on new phones in the words of the Taiwanese brand. As a reminder, HTC Sense is the custom interface from HTC that includes many features missing from the interface "pure" Android.
Nevertheless, news of Gingerbread are mostly irrelevant for smartphones HTC Sense. As a reminder, Gingerbread brings a new keyboard, a different interface, the NFC ... a lot of features built into HTC Sense.
Update: Do not confuse the version of Android (Android 2.1, 2.2, 2.3.2, etc.) and versions of HTC Sense (1.5 with Desire Desire 2.0 on HD and Z, and 2.1 on the new ones) .
This is the orignal link:

And the google traduction:
http://translate.google.fr/translat...ises-a-jour-pour-les-anciens-smartphones-htc/
It's not what I understood from:
http://crave.cnet.co.uk/mobiles/htc...t-for-android-23-gingerbread-update-50002752/
If they are going to update to 2.3 it doesn't make much sense not to put a new version of sense on the top otherwise they will have so many different threads going off...
It's the 2.1 sense interface and not the 2.3 gingerbread update. Those features are (according to http://androidspin.com/2010/09/15/htc-announces-htcsense-com/)
Locate your device by remotely calling your phone which will allow your device to ring even if previously set on silent
If your device ever becomes lost or stolen, HTC will offer a remote lock and wipe feature
Backup your devices’ contacts, text messages, call history, data and even customization
Share and edit multimedia content shot from your phone
Using your computer, you can send messages to your lockscreen
In 2.1 you can alose add a quick button setting (and 2 or 3 others features)
What I mean is why would they push out a Gingerbread update without Sense?
If they push out a Gingerbread update it'd have to be either;
1) gingerbread no sense
2) gingerbread with old sense
3) gingerbread with new sense
if it has old sense surely it means the HTC devs will have double the amount of work to do to make sure its compatible - when DHD/DS etc. will all have similar/same hardware and different UI to manage and maintain...
Of course we'll get the new Sense if we're getting 2.4 on the Desire - be a pointless update otherwise

According to them, it will be choice 2, maybe because they want to do the same strategy than Apple: new phones have new things, older one will not have them, even if it's possible.
Hopefully http://www.xda-developers.com/android/htc-huashan-gingerbread-dump-with-sense/ will bring a nice new rom with Gingerbread and sense to our lives sometime soon...
A lot of work would be needed but you never know, might be soon
I personally prefer to wait for a Desire S dump but we'll see
EDIT: Taking a look at the files now, see what I can do with it
Quick look...
- No HTC apps and it has the Lanucher2.apk so no idea what going on there (EDIT: It has some HTC apps but no widgets)
- It does have the HTC wallpapers/bootanimation files, etc
- Wouldn't know where to begin to port it over so don't ask!
sounds a bit fishy?
Oh well
It's a test build so probably not complete but I'd like to see a video of it running before doing anything with it. Im sure someone will release something at some point

Think it's more likely to be option 4) gingerbread with updated (old) sense same as they did with wm update the core and slap a newer upgraded sense over the top but still not the same sense as the newer phones.

there was already a report on that - they said it should come out around 3 months after the Desire S .... and basically said that could be any time between May and September
Wouldn't Desire HD still be superior to Desire S? It makes no sense to me to put new Sense into technically inferior device.

It's already been confirmed that the Desire, Desire Z and the Desire HD will all be receiving the latest version of Sense with the Gingerbread update, in fact it's already rolling out in some places. The UK will be receiving it tomorrow, as the last country in Europe to receive it. Desire and | updates will follow shortly after.
Htc is or has been working on a 2.1 sense for Desire Z. We already have a leak of the rom they've been working on

yes, but when ?
the wildfire s has the same internal memory as the desire and that has sense 2.1

wait, what tomorrow?
This phone has enough power to run this version. Many DZ owners can confirm this. Is the HTC Desire Z ever going to get this update?
Desire Z will officially get an update in January, but nobody knows what will it include
Wildfire S got an update recently with sense 3.0 lockscreen, but officialy it's called sense 2.1
Now Desire HD and Incredible S got a Sense 3.0 update. Hope we will get something too, especially if there's no next generation qwerty phone from HTC.
HTC engineers are working to bring Sense 3.0 to Desire Z at the moment, if they decide that Sense 3.0 works on Desire Z without any problem, they will release it via OTA, but if they decide that Sense 3.0 is not compatible with Desire Z, then they will cut the biggest features like 3D scrolling, and just release some Sense 3.0 features like Active Lock Screen as Sense 2.2 via OTA
desire HD got sense 3 OTA. im looking forward that they fix the bugs present in 2.3.3
is this confirmed already?
HTC Turkey confirmed it
I saw only information about DHD and DIS, nothing about Desire Z . Do you have any confirmation that HTC Turkey said anything?
No, because I have contacted with HTC Turkey by calling them, but I will try to get more information and a confirmation like screencaps for you
If you said that Desire Z will get update thats enough . However, wonder what version of sense we will get. My tryouts with support contact edns with information "phone is being tested with Android 4.x, but we cannot say anything". Well, we shall see. In my opining there are 3 possibilities, we will get 2.3.5 with Sense 2.1 with new lock screen, we will get Android 4.x in Jan/Feb or we will not get anything .
My conversation on HTC Chat with English Support.
"Hello. Is Desire Z will still be updated to android 2.3.5
Beatrix: Yes it is alredy relesed.
Beatrix: I can not tell you the exact date but every device will get the update.
Beatrix: You can check for a system update from the phone itself. On the Home Screen press MENU - SETTINGS - ABOUT PHONE - SYSTEM SOFTWARE UPDATES - CHECK NOW. If there is an update available then please download and install it. We recommend that you download the update via a WI-FI connection to avoid any data charges imposed by your mobile network provider.
Me: It is known IncreadibleS and Desire HD got the updates and Desire Z was not on the list of updates in December
Beatrix: yes it will be updated beggining next year. with htc sense3.0"
Engadget had desire z listed as getting sense 3.0 I thought..just a few days ago

is it new article? wildfire s just got an update... but no sense3
i dont mind if no sense3 as long as they fix the reload issue
and optimize the performance... before i go custom.
but sense3 will be appreciated if it comes
I also contacted HTC chat (Dutch support) They said the DZ will get the 2.3.5 update, but not what's included.
HTC UK
I have just contacted the htc uk customer services team who confirmed that the desire z will recieve android 2.3.5 and sense 3.0 update soon but they could not tell me when it will be available just that it is definately happening and it will be soon so its just a case of keep checking in and wait. seems like it will definately be happening though so thats one good thing
I hope before Christmas!
update
We got an update last Xmas, too.
Many of you probably have tried Sense 3.0 already with custom roms.
It is slow, I guess. Even with overclocking.
I hope they at HTC will find the right way.
I am waiting on an update, too, I just don't know why. It is nothing special.
Well, the new camera app is nice, advanced quick menu is cool, too.
Will you guys and all of us keep us updated if anyone gets the OTA update?
(we'll probably know about it in XDA forums, anyway...)
Why i want it? Two words- Rotating Rosie.

Thanks alot for this information guys. I've been trying hard to use custom sense Rom on my phone but the performance lag is just not worth it. If at all HTC does decide to bless us with Sense 3.0, I'm sure the developers will be able to optimize it even further for our liking.
Just a note: you've given us a hope by starting this thread. Here's hoping it doesn't get crushed!!!
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
I'd say the chances of our hopes being crushed are slim when so many of us have contacted htc directly but i cant say that im not worried that htc will go back on there word. After all what is the number of desire z users compared to the over all amount of customers htc has. We can only hope that even huge corporate companies have a concionce

You can try Virtuous Doubleshot then, but I couldn't fix mobile data on that ROM, CM7 RIL has only brought network back.
