I was originally going to buy this through Telstra, (outright not on a plan) but reading over the internet apparently Telstra has false advertising on the memory specs etc?
I have my heart set on this phone, mainly because of the keyboard.. havent seen any other phone have one like it..
Does anyone know a good place to buy this, otherwise I will go through Telstra
I got one shipped from O/S to Australia 2 months ago. My screen is a little funny and requires warranty service. HTC Australia will not have anything to do with it. I have to pay postage to and from Hong Kong for service!!
Keep in mind that the Telstra version works with different bands. Optus, Vodafone and 3 use differend radio bands for their 3G, so if you are planning on sticking with Telstra for the service then get it from them...
Its a wonderful device. I basically havent put it down in 2 months! With a data plan, Google Maps is great. Last month I rocked up at the local Fasta Pasta and saw that it was packed. I fired up google maps, and within seconds I had the phone number to call the place on and find out the expected wait time.
I couldnt find any mention of the memory at http://shop.telstra.com/webapp/wcs/...001&catalogId=11651&productId=81567&langId=-1
but know this: all devices initially reported 256MB RAM until a recent ROM from HTC that bumped the reported amount to 288.
Go grab the phone! And get irritated like me when someone asks "is that an iPhone?" Grrrr.. Never been so insulted and its happened a few times now lol
i bought mine on telstra. no problems to report, but if you buy a telstra phone you'd better be on telstra, because they preload a BUNCH of rubbish!
I decided to get mine from Smooth Mobile.. they have got good feedback from people on the Whirlpool forums.. it is also an unlocked phone so dont get any of the crap that comes when purchasing from carries
Now to read through and through these forums for cabs and such!
if you are on telstra, pm me and i'll give you some links to some USEFUL stuff that came on the Telstra version
Is there any advantage to getting a desire thats been nowhere near o2/Voda/3/Orange/T-Mobile ?
The proper sim free Desire will not have any network branding or apps installed and it will be first in line for any updates released by HTC. Plus, you won't have to run the risk of debranding the phone and losing its warranty
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
YES!
Orange have mutilated the Desire, ****ed around with the apps, broken the browser, and muddled up the voicemail - it's a car crash.
T-Mo have been kinder, but they decided to volume limit the damned thing, which is hugely annoying when your favourite tune come on.
I don't know what Voda, O2 or 3 have done to theirs.
However, you can always debrand a carrier-subsidised phone by flashing the ROM, it's an easy procedure (search - there are loads of guides) but it might void your warranty. If the operator's ROM is available in the wild then you might be able to reflash it before sending it off for repair, but you cannot flash an older bootloader over a newer one which might put you in a pickle in 18 months time if your debranded phone's been updated a few times OTA and only old operator ROMs are available.
Therefore, your best bet is to get it unbranded, you could eithe pay £380 full whack for it or get it from Carphone Warehouse or online and get the benefit of the subsidy as well.
It's an amazing phone, man, AMAZING!
£380
where ??????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just whack "htc desire" into Google shopping. Saw it on Amazon for £390 or so earlier today.
I think play.com are doing it for 389 now.

It'd be first to get 'proper' FroYo but I don't like the trackball - one more thing to possibly break and if anything like my missus BlackBerry it'll stop working within a couple of months!
EddyOS, your local to me lol
also, I had a blackberry 8800
went through 5 trackballs in a year, but £10 for a bag 5, meh, wasn't fussed
Then they integrated in on the 1st Bold
I just hope the desire gets ginger bread.

Generic HTC Desire on Vodafone in the uk
I cant see any way my desire is locked, or modified by Vodafone - i used to avoid them in the past as Id seen the mess they made of some handsets, but to the best of my knowledge the one I got from them 6 weeks ago is completely standard.
I know it's not locked to any networks, already tried a few different sims in and it works fine, and nothing in the Software Info suggests locking or customisation.
If you need a contract of some sorts it seems a good plan, its a free phone and my contract works out at about £400 over the 18 months anyway, not to mention all the data text and calls i get in the deal

yeah 3 has it for that price but not many will offer it as they get less commission if they sell on payg but who knows you might get lucky.. oh apparently they need you to buy a £10 top up now so total is £360

Guess I was lucky with my Three handset.
I took one out on a contract and got a totally unlocked and unbranded handset.
Apparantly it was because they were having problems getting three branded handsets so all the shops were send unlocked/unbranded ones to help with the demand!
Cool eh!

It is interesting that Vodafone (UK) are not branding the Desire - their unlocked policy is well known.
When I compare a Vodafone handset to my unbranded (bought that way) Desire, the Vodafone handset has even less 'bloat-ware'!!!
As commented elsewhere, I will get any Firmware upgrades first - but I don't understand Vodafone's logic: -
No branding.
Unlocked.
So why not just hand out default unbranded HTC phones, if you're not going to control the experience...??
MMB.
Does anyone know where to buy a Telus Desire if you are in the US. Telus does not ship to the US? They went on sale today on the Telus site.
I ended up paying a buddy in Canada to pick oneup and ship it stateside.
The $450 price makes that pretty reasonable compared to the $529 developer nexus one.
Cellunlock is unlocking them for 15 bucks with a coupon from hofo.
The only one I found so far is THIS on ebay. Bestbuy has it as well but they won't ship.
Anyone know what SPL it comes with? Can the Telus phone be rooted?
Thanks for the heads up guys, now i can get my friend to pick one up for me this weekend. $450 (~ $500 with tax) is a steal!

Total with tax in Ontario was $508.49. Considering the Nexus one directly from Google is $529.99 not a bad deal at all.
Unrevoked3 successfully roots the Telus HTC Desire (I've done it on mine). Someone on Hofo is further reporting they can load new ROM's (I'm too scared to try that at this stage).
It comes with 2.1 right?
On a side note, no place in Richmond BC seems to have them yet. Booo!!
Questions for those who have one;
Is it branded?
Does it have lots of Telus 'crap' installed?
Is the SLCD any good?

I just bought it yesterday at the Lansdowne- Bestbuy (~2pm). Really really friendly guy 449 for the phone (no questions) - knew exactly what i wanted to do with it ... unlock + root.
I wasn't sure if i wanted it (currently using a rooted htc dream) - he told me i have 14 days to try it out as long as i dont (root/unlock it/ use >30mins talk time) i can return the phone. I am with Rogers so its not possible for me to make any phones calls. I am using the WIFI to do everything at this point (install apps / exchange corporatte email / hotmail / youtube / twitter / facebook)
Gotta say the phone is DAMN FAST!!!
going back to your questions:
yes its 2.1 eclair
branded? - no it doesn't say TELUS on it anywhere .. it just says HTC on the splash screens - the back of the phone says
(on the top) - HTC
(bottom) - with google
with HTC Sense
i dont see any telus stuff on the phone - all the stock eclair crap (unlike the rogers htc dream) a crap load of rogers icons and colors
SLCD - it looks awesome on the phone - i've watched some HD videos from youtube and its really really clear so
when i picked up my phone they still have 1/2 in the lockup - so give it a try
@azn604boi did u unlock it if I did can I ask where I live in vancouver. I took it to 5 different places they couldnt do it. Cuz supposly telus store sold me a refurbished 1
Im takin it bak tmr try return it. Cuz when I went home the box wasnt sealed and there was fingerprints on screen.
Thanks azn604boi,
My friend went to the Lansdowne bestbuy as well but they told her to check back next week hmmm. Oh well, she ordered online instead.

I got mine from the BB in Coquitlam Centre. Apparently I took the only one though, since the online stock checker is now sold out. Apparently Best Buy in Metrotown still has them, plus Metrotown is nice and easy for an out of towner to get to
A question for anyone whos bought a telus desire from best buy;
Do they normally sell new phones without a contract, or do you have to talk them into hooking you up?
My friend tried to order one for me online but they are out of stock, the same for the telus store nearby. She called best buy but they insisted that they couldnt sell it without a contract. Whats up with that?

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone in Toronto area would know a place to buy the HTC Desire Z that isn't from Bell?
Or if it is from Bell, contains no Bell software (unbranded) and is unlocked?
I've been looking and haven't had any luck.
and has anyone noticed that Rogers is falling behind in the phone model area? Their phones are kind of getting outdated...
Thanks!
I uphave one unlocked with rogers....yeh there wayy behimd in terms of android. I suggest checking out kijiji.com or look at ebay or craigslist. If all else fails pm me and ill find you some online.

I purchased an unlocked/unbranded Desire Z on Ebay to use in the states on the AT&T network. It was a North American Version which had the correct 3G bands for ATT. Had a good seller and good experience but the phone was quite pricey. They go for anywhere between $550 and $650 US.
I would suggest buying it from Bell via FutureShop or BestBuy.
You don't have to get a plan if you do that, plus they offer their extended warranties which still cover you if you root the phone, etc (though you should still make it appear stock).
You can flash the official WWE ROM which is basically stock HTC Sense. It won't have the Bell apps, and you don't need to root or anything to flash the WWE ROM (I think). You just need to make a 'goldcard' which is just a specially formatted SD card.

Be careful, because G2 owners have found big problems when they unlock their phones, like not being able to connect to any network after that
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=835673
Cellunlock.net with the code bbrocks50 for half price. You can find the phone listed a couple different ways. Either by first looking up htc or by first looking up bell. One is chapter than the other. I paid 15.
Zero issues unlocking. I think the issues are limited to g2.
I'm unlocked with Telus currently..and I used HTCsimUnlowNow.com. Seemed to work fine..the only thing was it was initially $15, but then I had to send them another $10 (after paying the 15) because of the Bell carrier or some excuse. So far i've had no problems..and i'm even able to use my BB data plan with the HTC despite Telus telling me it most likely wouldnt work lol.
I was wondering if I'm able to remove Bell's software using a program (TitaniumBackup, for example) or do I have to go through that whole process of flashing this and that to unbrand it?
And how bothersome is the Bell software?
..Although I'm gonna do it anyway but I don't have time right now to mod the phone.
You need root and it takes a lot of time to do it with titanium. It's easier to flash the wwe rom. But the apps aren't too annoying. The lack of htc locations is annoying
To elaborate on my last msg (which I wrote in a rush)..
It's more painful and takes longer to remove the apps manually as you need to root and then use Titanium's force remove method, one by one, which reboots the phone each time and takes forever.
Alternatively you could root and then S-OFF and delete those apps with the root file manager.
Or, the easiest/quickest way imho is to borrow/make a goldcard, download the euro HTC Sync, the WWE Rom, and run the ROM install program. It does the rest of the work for you
I was gonna go buy the phone today but Bell won't sell it unless I go on a plan.
I called up several different places, all the same reply, they won't let the phone go unless it's going out with a plan.
Does anyone know where I could buy it in and around Toronto?

I asked at our local Best Buy (Oshawa) yesterday and they said they can sell the phone without a plan, no problem.
I bought mine today, you can buy it at WirelessWave or Telephone booth for the retail price.
I did notice the timestamp on the text messages are incorrect though, does anyone else have this problem?
I bought mine brand new on ebay for $375, t-mobile branded.. paid $15 to unlock it.
I suggest watching for a cheap one on ebay, maybe even try to bargain with some sellers.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
I suggest not buying from bell, or anything that is compatible with bell, unless you need it for ATT US or in Australia. Reason is that they use the wrong frequencies for use in Canada and would lock you to ROBELUS (the old evil phone companies). The US version of the vision is better... still compatible with robbers, but also with the best things that have happened to telecommunications in canada.... ever.
It sounds like we should start an exchange:
T-Mobile/Wind compatible phones exchanged for Bell/Telus/Rogers/AT&T compatible phones...
I'm on AT&T and I'd love to find the Bell Desire Z for purchase at a reasonable price. All the prices I've seen are ~$650 but the phones retail price is $500. Maybe I'm just not used to Canadian taxes... can my Canadian brethren enlighten this ignorant American as to how much the phone would cost unsubsidized after taxes?
You can get them straight from Bell for $565, with tax (13% on 499.95). If you look on kijiji and CL you can get them anywhere from $400-$500.
I bought mine yesterday for $480, no tax, and factory unlocked. It was brand new and sealed and came with a receipt for the warranty.
A lot of people are fooled into paying $600-$650 for an unlocked phone because sellers try to tell them that it costs $80-$100 to unlock it. But if people would take the time to look they would find you can get it unlocked for $25.

I'm thinking of getting the DHD, but before I do can others in the UK who have one on T-Mobile confirm that it's totally unbranded please?

Ordered on a Friday afternoon, got it on Monday the following week but that was before they were officially listed as available on the site. Make sure you take a look at the hardware issues like camera misalignment and small gaps between the battery cover. I'm waiting until about January before I send mine off for warranty repair over it since I figure they'll have more stock and I'll have to wait less time.
At risk of sounding like a noob, can I ask: doesn't unbranded mean the phone has no mention of the network at all?
If it does my t-mobile desire HD (ordered 1st december) certainly isn't unbranded, as it says t-mobile on booting and shutting down, and has a 'T-Mobile Recommends' app.
Not to mention the homepage on the internet browser was set to T-Mobile's mobile site when I got it.
Or does it just mean that T-Mobile isn't actually printed on the phone?

What exactly is the camera misalignment issue? My camera lens isn't centered, is this a problem, or is it normal? Haven't noticed any problems with it from actually using the camera..
As for the small gaps, if you're referring to the SIM cover, I never had a problem with it after reading this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=827091 before I got the HD.
