Hi guys,
I have HD2 and next month going to update my wife's contract.
Would u buy another HD2 or go for Desire?
- can u record all calls in Desire?
- do u have on Desire any decent navigation like Garmin or iGo8
- how long keeps the battery?
Thanks for all answers.
All the best
Desire is better than the HD2 IMO - I've got both and it's Android all day for me!!
- Google Maps is free and better than iGO
- You can record calls if needed (don't think so out the box, though)
- Battery life is about the same, 1-2 days depending on use

- why? have u tried Garmin or iGo on your HD2?
- Im using VITO Audio Notes to record all calls and it works brill, cant find this
program works on Desire, do u know any?
- HD2 battery can keep 12-15h, I am using internet often
The HD2 is pretty out of date. There's little chance it'll be upgraded to WM7 so sooner rather than later, you'll find yourself a bit in the lurch when it comes to newer appsand such. The Desire, on the other hand, is definitely getting Froyo (2.2) and will probably get Gingerbread as well, who knows what else. Plus thanks to Android's community, you'll get future updates for a long time, particularly due to its similarities with the Google Nexus One.
So from a purely "future proof" perspective, the desire wins.
When it comes to recording calls, there's an app for that. Battery life is going to be similar to the HD2, so it'll depend on what ROM/Kernel you're using, but generally they're comparable. Navigation I'm not so sure on, but google maps is pretty solid and is being updated all the time. I believe one of the other big SatNav companies has, or is working on, an android version as well.
Basically, I'd say get the desire.
There are also other good nav programs out there like copilot or sygic, but as everybody says, google maps navigation es very good and now offers street view (when u arrive at the destination i believe) and yes, there are programs to record calls (same as hd2, doesn't have such a program out of the box either!!)
Desire all the way (this is coming from an ex-touch hd owner, wich isn't as fast as hd2, but i know winmo very well!!!)

Yes I've tried iGO on the HD2 and it's crap compared to Google Maps IMO
I am a recent convert, I had the HD2 and love flashing it .
However I am glad I moved to the Desire, generally Android is a MUCH BETTER OS!
More app support etc
And you still get the benefits of HTC Sense UI
Im so glad to have a phone that just works!
And google maps navigation is the best !
There are few apps for Win-Mo and next to no free apps. Reason enough to avoid

Plus Win 6.5.x OS is pretty much dead, no Win 7 upgrade and such.
I sold my HD2 to get my Desire. There isn't a market place for the HD. no free apps of worth nor any reasonable priced ones. If you don't mind the phone as it is out the box its not bad, but the Desire is FAR SUPERIOR. From operation to apps, to even the screen.
Desire ftw

Thanks guys for all posts.
Regarding call recording - people complain that u can record only your voice, the other side is missing or very quiet.
Can u send me a link call recording program on Desire? Cant find any.
Do I need to flash Desire or current software for O2 UK is fine?
Cheers
Depends if you like the customisations O2 make to their phones. Personally, I always get phones SIM-free when upgrading (from CPW, P4U, etc) as you can then get updates straight from HTC as opposed to waiting on the operator...
Yesterday I sold my HD2 and got a Desire. Android is much better, fluent and nice looking OS that Windows Mobile.
You questions:
- since I can't use google navigation in Bulgaria I have to search for other options. I found that iGO has a version for Android. It's called iGO My Way - http://www.igomyway.com/android/en/overview.html. I haven't tried it yet, but I will when I have some free time this weekend. As far as I know it uses the maps form iGO, so if you were happy before with iGO, you should be with my way also.
- about the battery life - I can't tell you since I didn't used it enough time, but it's been 8 hours since the full charge and now the battery is on 70%. During that time I've installed 3-4 apps, at least 10 minutes of browsing, 10 minutes of talk time. Compared to the HD2 - with that time since a full charge and this usage, now it would be at 50%.
I've had desire for almost a week now, like all new things I've had a good play and enjoyed it for the most part.
It's fair to say if you are mad in love with all the [email protected] apps Android wins hands down.
However, as a phone the rom scene on Desire doesn't come close to HD2. Leo's Energy roms in particular are simply amazing the Dinik Glass Cookie mod is pure pleasure and has a beautiful interface absolutely knocks any desire rom I've seen into the long grass. The bigger screen may not be amoled but I find it more comfortable. I have all the Sat Nav apps for PPC and as a rule they all destroy Iphone/Android counterparts. Igo works on the Desire but it's slightly more of an ar$e to get working WELL.
As a phone personally (I've owned them all) I think HD2 wins over both Desire and Iphone 3GS. If you are an app man it slips to last place despite having superior Sat Nav (because thats almost all it does have). So far for me the Iphone is in last place bacause I detested it TBH. I know you're not asking about the Iphone but thought I'd share my thoughts on hod the HD2 compares to my last 3 phones.
This is based solely on the fact a hundred variations of iFart style apps and nice looking but ultimatly hard to control games do nothing for me.
I still have my HD2 and I think as a measure of how much I prefer it I think it will be my tool of choice for my forthcoming holiday. I'm using the Desire day by day at the mo but haven't decided if I'll keep it yet.

Which one do I keep HD2 or Desire?
Done keeping Desire, on o2 in Uk it comes supplied with some satnav software.
Not tried it much but seems very well with turn by turn voice guidance.

BTW, I found a WVGA version of iGO for the Desire. It's called iGO Motonav and it uses the iGO 8.3 maps and has a nice GUI.

I have both hand sets battery for me far better on the HD2 with a good rom and radio and to be honest any of those kind of tweeks are far easyer on the windows phone.
copilot works realy well on both hand sets
i think there are .cab , .apk on both phones if you wantd to record calls
Having spent a week searching for any calls recorder on Desire, my conclusion is - you can't record calls on Desire. This is essential for my job, so I will buy another HD2 then.
Any idea about Dell Streak? The same questions for the first post.

2. Is their any lack or slow or bug errors ... in opening standard programs..
3. How is the GPS works? is this work well and fast?
4. Any other problems for this Artemis lately??
Thank you very much for your answer..
The reason is PPC, when is first launch always has some problem.. with normally can be fix by the next firmward, so i just want to make sure that this work well... (Not like ATOM when is first launched)

1. Sound quality: I would give it a 3.5 out of 5. Reception is very good. Ring volume: excellent! Too loud for my taste in fact. I NEVER use the maximum setting because it is, well, too loud!!
2. Nothing significant regarding bugs. Speed is more than acceptable. I still cannot believe that it's using "only" a 200MHz CPU. It simply doesn't show. I guess this is due to excellent implementation on their part (AKU and all). Also it is VERY easy to overclock and get significant improvement (if you so desire...) but I haven't found this to be necessary.
3. The best GPS implementation I have ever seen. State of the art in my book.
4. I was looking to get Nokia N95 but I'm glad I didn't. HTC has hit the jackpot with this one I think.
I agree I hardly notice the difference between my shiny new XDA Orbit and my 2 yo XDA IIs, apart from not having to carry around a brick!
This was my biggest concern, top marks to HTC!
I have to say this thing blows the Exec out of the water. I got crashes when messaging, freezes while looking at pics, and a whole host of other little niggles with my Exec. The O2 XDA Orbit which I picked up yesterday has been an absolute beauty. It's a lovely size, really light, and the controls are very easy to use. The only thing I'm slightly concerned about is my battery has gone from 56% down to 6% in about 10min, which is a little bad but aparently is just my battery so changing that tonight.

Excellent
I have had the MDA compact III for a week now and I think its great, if you want a brick then its not for you... ok it could have done with 3g and wifi (I have had it confirmed through a friend who works for HTC that the wifi Chip (hardware) was removed on the MDA) but at the end of the day who turns on there wifi? I havent on any other device...
All in all you choose the device for your needs, I had a M3100 and got rid of that for this... my main needs are tomtom, e-mail and phone in the smallest form factor I can get.... this device does it!....I have two and my partner has one also ... got them from the t-mobile shop £20 for each phone then £15 a month and 6.99 for the Web and Walk .... Bargain!.
Mouse - I prefer the roller on the M3100 but I do like the inovation and have played a bit with it but I do like it.
It's awesome. I have the the HTC with Wifi, but also without Wifi it's an excellent device
All the points that you ask have a 5 stars for me, compared with my old HTC Himalaya
Nothing is perfect anyway, a cradle available is my desire
I am also seriously considering getting this phone. My only concern is reception and voice quality. Anyone who has used HTC Magician please compare phone function of these two phones?
Also, does this have a2dp?

Reception is good gps faar out and voice quality better than the magician (s100)
Good Device (still trying to get rid of the t-mobile ****) using mda compact III with wifi. by the way the device supports RDS (many people where asking this on the forum so here's your anwser
When is the free unlock available and htc roms (tmobile roms are fully branded and hardreset softreset doesn't affect this much....
Just about perfect...
This phone is the best I have owned. I upgraded from a PDA2k and see no appreciable lag between that device's 400mhz and the 200 in this little beauty - other than Voice Command taking just a little longer to beep after button press. It plays video like a champ (although converted to divx) - but who uses non-converted video anyway? Too much space on the mem card!
My only desire is that the memory card would be easier to get to. Sending large files to the card via Usb or Bluetooth takes forever. I hate the fact that I have a card reader built right into my laptop and I can't make use of this functionality with my PDA without taking out the battery and lifting the sim card holder. I guess since it uses MicroSD and those cards are easily damaged, HTC figured that hiding it away would protect us from ourselves!!! Hey, deeper in the device means less dust, right!? Just get a 2 gig and forget about it.
I have noticed that the battery is a little weak; I had an extended battery on my 2k and it lasted forever - but talk about bricks!!! I see that they are making an extended for the Artemis too, but I am hesitant to bulk up such a remarkably perfect form factor.
By the way - I concur that the wifi is solid and the GPS is fantastic (and well managed by the OS). I can walk around INSIDE my house and not loose my fix!! As far as Rollr is concerned, it takes some getting used to, but after a while I now don't think I could live without it! Read on:
If anyone wants to try a great configuration, try this: Use Double Launcher 2.11 and you go from having 6 hardware buttons and 2 softkeys to having 16 functions available via button! DL doesn't see the start menu button or the OK button on the Artemis, but it will give you 4 options on each of the other four keys. I had Vito Buttonmapper on my 2k, but it didn't seem to function well on the Artemis. DL is much nicer on this device. Then I used the registry hack by travegliaesogno posted here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=281487&page=2&highlight=mousemode to get the mouse mode to turn on using a button rather than the HTC icon on the Today screen. I used 40c2 (as this is the startmenu key which I never use for that function). The best thing is that the hack survives soft reset! Now I can get the mouse to appear within applications when I need it and make it disappear when I don't without having to minimize and go to the Today screen to activate/deactivate it!!! The mouse takes a little practice, and I wouldn't be surprised if the ROM updates for this device will make it run even more smoothly as time goes on.
I was really considering the Trinity when it became more and more likely that it would eventually have GPS, but now that I know the Artemis is as zippy as it is and my new love affair with Rollr, I'm glad I took the plunge with this lovely gadget! High marks, HTC!!!
Oh yeah,

Voice quality is excellent - no "sweet spot". Sounds good everywhere on your ear. Reception has been fantastic on Cingular in Virginia, USA. Sorry, can't comment on A2DP since I don't have bluetooth earphones yet. Okay, I'm done.
psargent, thanks for your mini-review, it was very helpful and removed my doubts about the device.
Thank you very much
Thank you very much for your coment on this Artemis..
So.. should say that this is the most perfect phone HTC ever build..
one more question, is this phone capable of 2g microsd?
Anyway i'll buy it.. wait until it release in THailand...
Yep, its a fine phone/pda. Ringer is loud, im glad to say, nice ringtones too, none of the normal crap tunes they put on all the phones these days. Tomtom seems slow to get the sats up but once it gets going its great. Its amazing what you can get on a 1gb card. I have 2 full length films and tomtom with space to spare. Unreal picture quality too. Well happy
I have the 2gig sandisk card from www.mobymemory.com and it works fine.
2 Gig Sandisk ULTRA also works well

I havn't looked at this in detail but dont forget you can only compare the clock speeds of CPU's with similar architecture. Intel XScale chips usually have sky high CPU clocks (500MHz) but their architecture means a different CPU at 200MHz could potentially have more number crunching ability. One thing is for sure though more MHz = more battery juice.
Checkout the current crop of PC CPU's, Pentium 4's have clocked upto 3.8GHz but the new Core 2 Duo's running at 2.6GHz are way more powerful because of their architecture.
Its good to know that HTC's 3300 at 200MHz matches older 400MHz designs though so thanks for your input, I had been reading lots of posts about "BUT ONLY 200MHz - WHY!!?" etc etc I thought they were talking boll**ks now I know they were.
Network lock
Does anybody know if the O2 Orbit is actually locked to O2. I'm so tempted to go and get one right now, phone shop is only 10 minutes away, but i need to put a Vodafone sim in it.
Thanks for your help.

mine wasn't locked at all. orange sim worked with no probs...

Best phone I have ever had. I tried out Iphone 3gs and HD2 ON o2 for two weeks on both sets under their returns policy, sent them back. Got the Desire with T Mobile, brilliant, great phone, great price plan. Have had no issues with it. Some issues on this forum have been sparodic and not the norm, most have been dealt with. Compare the issues with other handsets on other forums including Iphone there are shed loads of issues out there.

1) If you are going to switch from iphone to Andorid...then initially you may feel that you have missed lots of apps that iPhone has... yes, thatz true.. you cannot not compare the iphone apps with android apps...
2) with respect to the phone.. i would say its a 100% buy... screen is excellent 100times better than iphone.. The touch screen is brilliantly done…no issues till now I am using it for past 27days... below are the few things I found it difficult...
a) I could not setup my office exchange server email on HTC desire.. but, it used to work fine on the my iphone.
b) i got the phone thru T-mobile UK.. The problem is when I browse the internet I cannot receive incoming calls.. (This problem is only when your are browsing the internet in 'G'.. no problem when browsing in 'H'). Not sure if the same problem exists with other networks.
c) Battery life is not good.. i have to carry the usb cable all the time with me (just in case..)
3) I tried to play few .mp4 files that i downloaded from youtube.. image quality is excellent but the sound output was not good (i am using the inbuilt video player).
4) Music player is not as good as iPhone... very low volume compared to iphone... supplied ear phones are very big in size for my ears..
thanks!! am planning to change sometime in a weeks time,
with so many threads on problem with HTC desire, that was making me doubt my decision!!
please also tell any one feature u like most about it
I've been wondering the same thing. Lots of posts about issues etc.
Can anyone advise on these:
1. Low speaker / ringer volume
2. Poor Image quality on browser
(I download and view images in my job so high quality is vital)
3. Screen colour issues - pink hue
4. Battery Life !
I'm sure I'll think of some more..
Thanks
1. Never had that issue, but I don't use the loudspeaker
2. You'll get this as it's a mobile browser - stick to a PC/Mac for big images
3. Only the HTC website is noticeable IMO
4. nearly 48hrs without a charge at the mo

I would recommend it if you don't mind carrying a spare battery or buying an external one if you're going to use it heavily day to day. (assuming you don't have access to somewhere to charge it) As the battery life can be very temperamental although it will last at least 8 to 10 hours of light use. This may be fixed in the future to give longer battery life but you're not going to get more than a day out of this phone if you are using it for more than a few hours a day.
Other than that it's generally a very good, powerful phone. There are the odd complaints here and there but most of them should get solved eventually or can be worked around or are minor things you don't really think about / notice from day to day. Things that need to be sorted out or improved can be found in one of the threads but I've had no major problems.
The only thing I would say is as I like to have a huge amount of apps on my device so more program memory would have helped. I get around this by storing the apps I don't regularly use on my sd card using app monster I think and then reinstalling them and installing something else. It doesn't take long to do and I haven't needed to do it yet in the month I've had it so it's a minor problem for me.
So to sum up even though what I've said about the phone above doesn't seem to positive I really love this phone. The phone is good enough to do nearly anything the other smart phones specialize in and do it well. I've used it to briefly edit and access large office documents, browse the internet (including most flash sites I use even worked with a few audio streaming sites and even quite a few videos, for ones that didnt work I found apps like engadget and bbc iplayer beebplayer.), listen to last fm, record as well as download videos and upload straight from the phone, get the tube status, next train times, search, stocks, my notes, use for car navigation, listen to music, IM and play games (3d applications and games are improving and look good). All these feature I've used so far have worked perfectly for me. This is only the tip of the iceberg for me and I'll use more features as I need them. The android app market is great and still growing at a fast rate, Google apps can be very useful and are free too.
SorryI couldn't just mention one feature I use when I use so many!!!
i would be fair with you. The phone has issues like any other phones. none is perfect. HTC sucks big time in their updates ..... everybody knows it but what makes ppl still buy htc is the xda forum and the ability to install custom roms.
i am 100% sure all the minor issues you have read about till now will be solved with custom roms. but until then, we should be able to get root.
so my advice, wait and see if the htc desire gets rooted properly with new recovery image . once this is achieved, just go and grab yourself a desire as it is one of the best out there.
if not , then consider your other options. the samsung galaxy s will be out soon

8-10 hours on light use? Seriously?
I'm about to plug it in after 17 hours of what I'd consider medium to heavy use. Wi-fi on constantly, push email, replied to and sent 20-30 mails, FriendStream and weather set to sync every hour, couple of phonecalls, hour or two of browsing, some messing with Google Sky and a live wallpaper running!
I come from wimo. Traditionally feature rich but sluggish and unstable at times. Desire is my first Android. Not as feature rich as wimo, but lightning fast with the Snapdragon. When travelling home this evening, was watching a movie on the nicely colored screen (800x480), got a call, answered it with sound on the headphone and talk handsfree via the mic, and resumed watching video again, all without any hickup or problem. That's impressive. Of course, this is only a very small aspect of a phone, but it still impresses me after 2 weeks of ownership. Can't wait until arrival of 720p recording, divx support and some work on the Bluetooth stack.

Has it been confirmed by HTC??
I'm curious about that too. I don't think I've heard any direct confirmation that it will actually record in 720p, but I've seen a few places say 720p playback.
The Snapdragon is supposedly capable of both, though.

1. Very loud - maybe a bit tinny, but like every other smartphone I've heard, the speaker must be tiny. Anyway after hearing the startup jingle, almost fainting, and then reading 'quietly brilliant' I reconsidered HTC sense of humor
2. Excellent quality, images are compressed only in 3G and I'm not sure if this happens regardless of the handset or the browser
3. This is very personal and varies between handsets-you can always have it replaced if its really bad. Personally I notice it only under 40% brightness
4. Like every other smartphone it depends on your usage. I can go very well through a day/day and half of light-medium use, but you surely can waste the battery in 6 hours of continuous heavy usage. Spare batteries are always a good idea and cheap nowadays. After a week of usage:
- very light usage: 2+ days
- normal usage: 1.5 days
- heavy usage: 1 day, barely
- worst I've done: 5 hours (heavy GPS and 3G, high brightness, installing lots of stuff)
Like in every other handset I had, I think what kills the battery is (in order): GPS - 3G - High Brightness - Calls - Sensors - File Access - etc
With regards the pink hue, I notice in the big sticky that HTC have replied to one of the posters and said they're working on it.
Personally, I didn't even notice it until I read about it here
Well i have had my desire for a week now, and i'm very satisfied with it. the pinkish tint don't annoy me, and i actually never noticed until i read it here. Other than that i don't understand people complaining about poor batterylife, as my phone is still at 20% after 12 hours of heavy use the first days, and that is with around 5-6 hours of awake time. With normal use it last at least 2 days.
720p recording has been mentioned by some HTC official back in February/March but I would not consider that a hard promise. You will find it right away with Google.
heavy use which includes: WiFi/ friendstreem /emails/ weather/ game/ download /installing and more
battery life is about 12 hours
+ display is fantastic
+ performance is great with pictures and videos (watching)
+ screen size generously big
+no problem with WiFi and networking up to now
+ you enjoy Eclaire on this hardware
+good on-screen keyboard
-still no root access so no other fonts languages yet
- HTC sense is not really that hot as it seems to
-I can can not find a grip for wrist band on the phone
- camera focus really dodgy and almost slow shooting
o. optical is not bad I don't really use t
hat much
at the end nothing is perfect
and yet I am really happy with this phone

hi, i'm now using a Cooked WinMO HTC Touch HD and very divided weather to go for HTC Desire or iPhone 4 .. Both has their Pro but i have only play with their default OS and seen video demos on their features..
1) ex-WinMO users, how do you bring all ur contacts, sms, calender over to HTC Desire ?
2) Does a Rooted HTC Desire has better multi-touch ? I seen a video comparing HTC Desire & Samsung Galaxy and HTC Desire seem to lose out ?
3) Are you able to play videos on FB on HTC Desire ? I have a crappy FB app on my WinMo which is useless.. hahaa
4) Any ex-iPhone JB users can share what's the pro & cons for both OS ?

Hi,
I was / 'am' the biggest Apple fan out there, had all the iPhones and JB'ed all of them, thought what could be done on JB was brill....until I tried the Desire / Android which I bought because I was bored with the iPhone, expected to keep it a week and then fall back to the iPhone and sell the Android.
Well I ended up selling the iPhone and loving my Desire, everything you achieved by JB'ing the Apple you do out of the box with Android, then rooting it takes it to a whole new level of 'fiddling' and getting a config which you want.
Get the Desire, no question.
Thanks for all your reply..i'm inching closer to Desire soon ...
Just one last qns .. comparing the apps (not including games) is Desire able to match iPhone ones ?
currently on my mind i can think i need is audio translator..
I moved from WinMo (HTC Touch Pro) to a Desire. I was worried I would miss some of the WinMo functions but i dont !
Contacts copied straight across from PC using HTC Sync provided. I did miss the syncing with Outlook until i figured I could autoforward my account to a googlemail account and get the best of both worlds.
video is poor out of the box on the Desire but a quick download of Rockplayer brings it back up to (and beyond) WinMo video.
Games are much better for Android than WinMo (although maybe not yet on a par with iPhone for sheer volume of games - but how many games do you really need ??)
MS Office also worried me moving from WinMo but there are plenty of apps out there to sort you out.
All the stuff that you relied on chefs doing for you on WinMo you can do on Android just by downloading apps from the Marketplace.
Go for the Desire. I was dubious but Im now a committed Android groupie
I have an iPhone 4 (personal) and the Desire (work). If you are a casual user I would say go with the iPhone. If Facebook is a big concern I can say with confidence that the iPhone app is better.
IPhone 4 pros:
Amazing screen
Better keyboard (comparing to stock HTC sense keyboard)
Easier to use for the average user
Better battery life
Better multi-tasking (for the average user)
Desire pros:
More customization options out of the box
Better Google maps app
Better goggle integration (which I love)
I know some will disagree with me, but that is how I feel. I love both phones, and they both appeal to different parts of my personality. I think if you are not much of a tweaker then you are better off with the iPhone. Hope this helps.

I too am curious to your thinking. One thing I noticed from my friends iPhone is that when he brings up the multitasking thing at the bottom he can scroll through everything that's running as opposed to the 8 latest apps that the android shows. But I've never actually found it to be an issue personally.
Also in relation to the OT, I have never owned a iPhone (only my currently rooted Desire) but my friend who used to have a 3G and recently chose the iPhone4 over other choices says that while he is happy with how the iPhone runs, he does kind of wish he could customise it like I can with my Desire.

WTF, the Desire does have multi touch, you must be confusing it with Xperia X10 which has dual touch instead of multi touch as sony didn't want the possibility of being sued be Apple.
It should be noted though that Apple didn't invent multi touch.
I was using Touch Diamond with custom ROM for two years, Few weeks ago I switched to android (have choosen DESIRE).
I could not made a better choice. Not yet brave enough to ROOT it )))).
Really the phone is excelent, speed and UI is great, customization possibilities are as good as I was used with WM.
Flash is also working without any problems, so is multi-touch. Even iPhone 3GS users were impressed ))))).

It is a well known fact that the Desire, unfortunatelly, doesnt have proper multi-touch. It has a somewhat refined dual-touch ability, but in games, it has some issues here and there. You can see it downloading a simple app from the market for touch testing. Thats the only thing im somewhat jealous of the other multi-touch phones (galaxy s, iphail).
But the only thing im jealous the most about the iphone is its scratch resistant screen.. that makes me cry every time i realize that our screens are made from glass only.. :/

Let me preface this with the fact that I am running both of these devices in parallel right now. Also, I have 5 of the desires in production in our corporate network (which I am in charge of troubleshooting)
As of yet, the Android doesn't have a way of naitvely handling the problem of multitasking for the average jo-blo. "dl this app, then every now and then check to see if apps are open, otherwise your battery will drain" Is what I find myself telling users.
This is not that case with the iPhone. Multitasking battery savings is done automatically for the average user.
I know that most people reading this are power users, so closing out of tasks is no big deal, however, this is an enormous task for the average user, and I really feel that Apple has done an awesome job with the whole multitasking idea, and have made it very easy for the average end user to use the phone.

Hi,
I disagree! I do absolutely nothing to "manage" multi-tasking on my phone and suffer no problems with battery.
In contrast, the vast majority of iPhone apps don't multi-task at all anyway, so I can't see how it can be better.

Dave

The iPhone's method of showing what apps are running is nicer and it is a pain to have to download an app just to see what is running on your phone. But on the Desire you don't actually have to go closing everything. Apps running in the background do not drain battery while sitting idle. Using apps like Advanced Task Killer should really only be used to close problem apps, not to constantly shutdown everything that is running.

As of 2.2 we have a "sort-a" built in task killer so no need for 3rd party stuff... as for your other claim, indeed the apps dont drain battery at all (well..not as much..) so i really dont get it when people say that background apps drain battery and what else.. i dont have any battery drainage whatsoever, and if i dont use wifi at all, my battery can last 2 days easily...

Hello good people,
First of all, Merry Christmas,
So I'm currently looking to buy a new phone. My current phone is a i900 Omnia which is great but I really like the HD2 and DHD. I probably won't buy a new phone for a year or two so would like something which will last.
Is there any people here that had/have a HD2 and upgraded to DHD? Was it worth it? The DHD is about $250 more then HD2 here and I'm wondering if I should get it or not. I like the tweak ability of the HD2 but have never used it so I don't know how it feels whereas I tried out DHD and was very impressed. Even if I did get the HD2 I would still use Android and WinMo for GPS, unless there's something as good as iGO8 on Andoid.
Also I read some people have issues recording in 720p, freezing while recording. Is there a workaround with this issue?
I had only a little play with Android so I'm new to all this root etc...
Thank you, have a nice day
Currently, android on HD2 is not so good as DHD, and I'm sure it's not going to, so pick up your choice between winmo or android.
I myself moved from HD2 to DHD, for finger friendly UI and newly developed apps.
Another good thing is android is both dev and user friendly, no more registry tweaks or volidate cleaning! Apps gone as you want it to, also easy to get back from market.
It is not a bad phone but the battery life sux big time. You need to carry spare battery with you.

Thanks for replies people,
Is the touch screen much different from the HD2, as far as the sensitivity and such? When I tried the DHD I went into the messaging and tested out typing and it was just such a breeze, atm it's always a hustle without a stylus.
I'm not too worried about battery life, I won't be watching movies on the go, maybe just some gaming, web browsing and mp3 playing.
I just want a device that makes my life easier, I read that WinMo on HD2 needs ALOT of tweaks and registry changes to get running how it should be and while I am a computer whiz and love messing around with everything, I think now I just want something that works mint out of the box with great potential if I decide to try other stuff. Also apparently the SuperRAM Android builds on HD2 runs extremely well.
Are there any other good devices with 4.3" screen and 1Ghz CPU? I tried the Galaxy S but didn't like the build quality and typing seemed crap compared to DHD.
Is the DHD what I'm looking for?
Did you say Stylus?? hahahaha.. havent heard that word in a while... plus the stylus doesnt usually work on a capcitive screen..
In respect of HD2.. rightly said.. you need to do a lot of twearks,, but once done you are good to go.. or you find a good custom ROM and you are all set... With Sashmi you can install all your tweaks and the apps automatically when you flash a new ROM.. PLUS to Root (read HSPL) a WinMo phone is just too easy and straightfwd...
While going thru the rooting for DHD, goodness... i got confused.. so many times

I just upgraded to dhd from hd2 last week. I had been running mdj's dhd roms for more than a month....so the upgrade was not revolutionary. It was not a necessary upgrade except that I was flashing new roms every other day....
The pros of dhd compared to hd2
Slightly better screen...colors and sharpness
Better screen sensitivity
Better battery
Maybe a bit faster and more stable??
Better cam & video
But external speaker is very soft.
if I had known...I prob would not upgrade. Now my son is running mdj gingerbread on the hd2...lots of potential...

Yes Stylus!! LOL, Omnia has a resistive touchscreen so a stylus makes things easier. Yeah I've been doing alot of reading for HD2 and now how to flash, and I agree that it's much less confusing then rooting the DHD. The initial shock of reading how to root was overwhelming haha!
I think my only best bet now is to go and try a HD2 in a shop, but I must wait till the 5th for shops to open. If I can save 200bux for near same experience then I'm all for it. I'm a student and don't have cash just lying around lol, I mean the DHD costs more then my car!! (Had my 180sx stolen from where I study and needed something which nobody would bother stealing...POS '91 Ford Festiva)
@genting1 Will you be looking to go back to a HD2? Are you now regretting buying? Is the DHD enough?

Wait for few more days get some more money
Ask few of ur friends for some maybe they can help u out with ur money problem
But don't buy HD2 if ur gonna use Android for every day use
Hope this helps
To my fellow student...
I know what it's like, the ability and situation to spend money on any device you wish...an upgrade is however, necessary. Your old phone seems quite old, judging by its manufacture date and stylus interactions. What you have to remember, as a student as well as a person, is what device will serve your needs more? Do you want a more multimedia-oriented phone or a business phone? What will consume less time and work out of the box? Right now, it is a very critical time for me. I have seven exams in January alone. If you are in a situation even a fraction of what i'm in....well you get the point. I previously owned the HD2 for the best of a year before "upgrading" to a Desire HD. I would say that Windows Mobile, although an extremely flexible OS that allows for many tweaks and customisations, is an extremely old and "outdated" OS...it requires a dedicated owner and a lot of time to get it the way YOU want it. Also, you will get into a habit of regularly flashing custom roms and trying out another Android build etc. I believe that it is a phone for people who wish to experiment and realise the potential of a device.
On the other hand, you have a Desire HD. I would see it as an entertainment class phone. It has the same size screen as my old HD2, but more vibrant colours. The speakers are low and softer in volume, although who ever uses phone speakers to listen to music? As students and on the train and in lessons, we use our phones to listen to OUR choice of music in privacy and as a form of time-passing and relaxation. The Desire HD is a valuable music player, as it reproduces sounds far better than my HD2, thanks to SRS and Dolby sound effect algorithms. It is quite adept at playing multimedia, and has 720p capture AND playback abilites. There is also an 8mp camera sensor, and nice applications.
Personally, I believe a Desire HD will be more suited to you. It is a newer model with more powerful/updated hardware. From what I assume, if you were to purchase a HD2, primarily you would use it for Android on a daily basis and GPS navigation within Windows? If that is so, i'd suggest going for a Desire HD. I have one, and it is flawless. Android on the HD2 will never be on the level of a Desire HD. It natively runs the OS, and the device is fully stable. Booting into Android on a HD2 and back and forth to Windows will take at least a minute either way. It's up to you in the end, but I advise you go for a Desire HD. Although it's more expensive, it's all the more appealing and filling. Thus you will have the latest device, best hardware, a smooth OS experiance and the ability to download programs from the Market at the swipe of a finger. As a side note, if you want another device recommendation, it would be a HD7. Rumours have it that it is selling for £414.00 on Amazon and less on Ebay! In the end, the choice falls to you. I hope i've clarified the situation for you
(And in case you are wondering, no I don't regret getting a Desire HD. The experiance, smoothness and perfection alone are enough to make me happy and show off my device)
I won't even look at WP7 until it matures more and see how it turns out, seems too limited too me and I don't think I will be happy with it.
I'm not a fanboy of either OS but I do feel WinMo is getting old and customizing is essential to get the most out of it. I haven't had too much interest in Android until recently when I was researching more about it and it has really grown on me.
I've been keen for a HD2 for months and months simply to try Android without completely moving to a full Android device but that was before I knew more about Android and it seems like it's a great OS. Definitely "future proof" where developers will spend time on it so new software will always be available, unlike WinMo.
Better hardware is a lot what I've been thinking about, so why not right, it would be time for once to own the best right NOW.
But anyway, I think I've been convinced and I'm gona break my own "rule" ($400 max for a phone, in the past anyway lol) and thank you all for your time to help me out, I look forward to owning a Desire HD
So first thing I should do with the phone is get S-OFF and flash Buzz 1.0.6 kernel and then update to latest version? Or get S-OFF, update and then change kernel?
I'd suggest S-off, then flashing Android Revolution HD (either latest one for android 2.2.1) or Android Revolution 1.9.3 for android 2.2...real difference is slightly faster IO speeds..but with latest rom you can't flash a custom kernel...yet! You can also try Leedroid, and try out kamma's kernel, although I have gps problems with this combination. Hope I helped!
Hi,
Next week it's finally time to buy a new phone and I have a few questions I hope you guys can help me with.
I pretty much had my mind made up to get a HTC Desire with a 12 month contract, and go for a top of the line (hopefully HTC) dual core phone next year.
But now the Desire S is coming within 2 months (expected) and i'm beginning to doubt.
After searching here at XDA I found 2 major issues people seem to have with the original Desire.
The lack of multitouch support and the small internal memory.
I really like the design of the original Desire, especially the hardware buttons and trackpad. But the Desire S isn't ugly either.
And ofcourse the Desire S fixes the 2 problems and bring better specs. But it will also be a lot more expensive, around 150 euro extra with a 12 month contract I think.
I also have to walk around with my old Touch HD for an exta 2 months
So finally my questions are: How much of a limitation are the dualtouch screen and internal memory?
How much/which apps are unusable due to lack of multitouch? Only games or, more importantly, other apps as well?
And with App2SD and more possibilities after rooting, do you still have problems with the internal memory?
As mentioned I have a Touch HD now, I don't have many application installed and I don't play games on it.
This could change with android seeing as there are much more possibilities and quality apps, but I still don't see myself gaming extensively on my phone.
Using search I could not find a answer, only that some have 100 or even 200 apps installed. Which to me sounds like more than enough.
I would very much appriciate your thoughts!
Thanks
Heyo,
My short answer would be, get the original desire.
Long answer:
If you are going to root your phone and possibly even install a custom rom you would get almost unlimited amount of space for your apps with the apps2sd solutions around nowadays. Well... maybe not unlimited, but more than enough space anyways As it comes to multitouch, I own a desire and have never found myself thinking "i wish i had multitouch." As far as i know it's not really needed for anything (except for google maps tilting etc. whoop-de-doo.)
I also noticed that you mentioned preferring the hard buttons. Let me tell you, the touch buttons on my previous phone (wildfire) were driving me CRAZY!!! I accidentally pushed the back button while writing a message so many times it wasn't even tragically funny any more. Just so you know, when you do that, you have to write the whole message again... which is nice!
All in all, the desire S seems like a good phone, but the overall opinion about it seems to be that it's sort of a inbetween phone. The original desire does not have the appeal it once had because it's not new and shiny any more and the dual core HTC phones are yet to be announced.
Thanks for your input. And yes I'm definitely going to install custom roms, maybe not right away but as soon as I get bored with the original one. I flashed all kinds of roms on my Touch HD as well (thanks xda-developers!). If that pretty much fixes the memory problem that would be great.
As for multi touch, glad to hear from a desire use that does not have problems with that. While reading these forums I came across multiple threads showing Youtube movies of the Axis crossing issue and complaining how they have so much trouble with it. Do you play any games which require multiple touches at the same time and don't you have any problems with that either?
Anybody else care to share their opinion? It would be great to hear from a few other desire owners what their experiences are.
I'm voting S. No point in getting a one year old phone when you won't get dual core phones in less than a ~year either way. By that time your contract for this phone would expire.
Desire S is not in the upgrade path for the Desire vanilla owners, but for users like you, which don't have either.
People are sharing misinformation regarding S that it is just plain ridiculous. I guess it is desperate fight in favor of their investment
The device is clearly better than the original Desire, and not only in the terms of internal memory. The only reason why you possibly might go after Desire vanilla is the AMOLED screen, which you couldn't get either way now.
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
Well, if you have enough money to spend then yes I would agree. But I'm a student and the Desire S will cost me an extra 150 euros easy. Which I could spend on other things as well.
So the reason why I'm trying to determine the impact of the low memory and dualtouch is to see if the "issues" with the Desire are bad enough to spend that extra money on a newer device, while I will be upgrading to a dual core next year anyway. Or can I last 12 months with an older, but still pretty good, smartphone that has some limitations.
And as a Desire owner, could you provide your take on the low internal memory and dualtouch issues please
Only reason I would choose original Desire over S is price of phone on contract. If the difference is over 100€ I would buy original Desire. Especially if you plan to root and install custom roms which can overcome Desire's problem with low memory.

I'm a college student with some 9 exams to grad, so I know what you're talking about
I don't know what multitouch is, so I can't miss it either.
Low internal space is no problem, you have plenty of ways to circumvent this, and decent SD card outperforms nand either way. The only thing I can imagine which might eat your internal away are stupid Gameloft's games which don't work on Desire either way like they should due to poor gpu performance. I have some 70 apps on my phone and 100mb free on my internal storage.
Desire S packs second generation Qualcomm cpu which rectifies the first gen shortcomings, has moar internal storage, moar memory and on top of that, has better battery combined with more energy efficient cpu. This sounds like a win win situation to me, while clearly the internal memory issue is not the only one addressed like people claim.

@erklat, thanks for the info. And I won't tell you about the dualtouch/multitouch issue on the Desire. If you haven't noticed by now than it's safe to say that you are not bothered by it. If I explain it, you might start to notice this little shortcoming
Edit: Erklat, you say you have 70 apps and 100mb storage left. Is that by only using the app2sd option in Froyo or do you have a custom rom with more move to SD card options as well?
@monsterfly, yes I'm beginning to think so as well. Also because no one seems to notice the dualtouch limitation here.

Get the Desire S if you are looking for a gaming device (Minigore, Mini Squadron, Gun Bros and basically any game that uses dual analog controls won't work it's best - and the lack of multitouch is painfully obvious). Otherwise, the only place where you'll find Desire's dualtouch lacking is in the newest Google maps.
As for the memory/battery issue... The battery on the Desire doesn't last more than a day of use (unless it's in airplane mode and with the screen off). The internal storage is severely lacking with the default software, but resizing partitions and/or apps2sd make the Desire a Beast.
A 100€ is a lot of money for a student (I'm still in high school ), however, if you're going to be able to afford a dual core HTC next year or so, is money really such a problem? (especially if the other way to spend the $$ is getting drunk )
Either way, it's up to you. Personally, if I had the money, and not the Desire, I would probably go for the Desire Z, but choose what fits you best.

I use a2sd+ capable custom rom
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
@number22, thanks for your reaction. I'm not looking for a gaming device so I'm glad to hear yet another person is not having issues with the lack of multitouch.
And I'm familiar with the battery not lasting long, my current Touch HD doesn't last that long either. About a day and a half with moderate usage, so I'm already used to charging every night. This seems to be the case with most smartphones nowadays anyway.
And I will be able to afford a high end phone next year because I will take a 2 year contract. But to me there isn't one high end phone now or coming in the next few months that is worth that 2 year contract. So I want a 1 year phone to keep me happy till next year without spending too much money. And I think the original Desire will be able to do that.

so he could see the additional money spend as precaution for becoming an alcoholic if not yet .
I guess I would go with the Desire S (because of more storage space and I did not root my Desire yet) but agree on the fact that 150Euros is quite alot. On Multitouch: I play some games (miniSquadron, Gun Bros) and on neither of them I face a real "big" issue, maybe it would work better with multi but it works fine as it is as well.
@chrismast, haha I suppose you can look at it that way. And thanks for the info on multitouch, great to hear.
low internal storage is not a problem any apps2sd+ or data2sd solves it perfectly
battery usage ? with custom rom (snq kernel on InsertCoin ROM) i get 3-4 days with low use and 1 day with heavy use. ppl say that with couttstech kernel it is even better.
multitouch. you will experience it only in games (and google maps)
but most games (good games actually) have the option to use 2 d-pads diagonally which makes it playable on the desire not every game though (for example i cant play pes 2011 cause the buttons are on the same height as d-pad)
but here is a funny fact. do some search on desire forums here on xda, topic name was 'is desire a good smartphone'. some guy claimed there that he could play all multitouch games easily, i specifically asked him to double check some games and he said that he plays this games without any problems while i cant (one of them was pes2011) he haid a PVT4 erasesize 2000 version (SLCD of course) and i have a PVT3 version. but in theory they have the exaclty same hardware so i cant tell wheter it actually worked better on his phone or maybe he just couldnt see the issue (dunno how would that be possible)
I'm a desire user, but I'd say if money isn't a problem then it'd be best to get the desire s, unless you're willing to play around with it a bit to get that extra storage.
Personally, I can't leave those hardware keys behind, I'll be waiting around for a dual core with them (if not, maybe a quad core later ) and the desire has a great community behind it, with a nice variety of ROMs. The multitouch isn't bad at all if you don't play too many games, I play a lot of games requiring multitouch and haven't had any problems except for a couple (multi-touch 2 player air hockey, and another one I forget that wasn't fun anyway)
Also note that you do have "multi-touch". It's not like the X10 before it's update that had to use zoom buttons. Only a few things that require real multi-touch don't work with the Desire. This basically comes down to the google maps tilt thing and dual player games (on the same phone like airhockey). You aren't going to miss it. For just one year the Desire will be fine. My own contract ends in about one year from now.
Thanks for all the usefull answers guys. I think i'll be getting a Desire next week
My opinion:
Dual-Touch: I've played many games on my Desire (mostly tower defense games and Sudoku, which wouldn't require multi-touch). I only noticed an issue with this when I loaded the new Google Maps and couldn't use some of the new features. Tbh, you wouldn't normally want to use that feature other than to show off to your friends what your awesome new phone can do.
For my touch-screen gaming, I mainly use my iPad (and soon my Motorola XOOM! ).
Low internal memory: When I was using the default ROM, it was pretty terrible. I'd have to clear internet and Facebook cache all the time just trying to get another couple of MB of storage to be able to sync (when <15 MB remaining on internal, nothing syncs including email, IM clients, Facebook push notifications, etc). Even using FroYo's built-in Move to SD feature, there was not nearly enough space on my phone. After I installed LeeDroid (with A2SD+), however, things went so smooth. The ROM is miles faster, slightly better battery optimization (still a daily battery, but now lasts maybe 2-4 hours longer until needing to charge) and most importantly: apps can be moved to ext3 partition on SD card allowing LOADS more space on internal memory!
For the multi-touch it depends what game.
For games like Heavy Gunner with both controls at the same axis, yeah.
Int memory as mentioned, has been addressed from rooting (if you don't root, you're losing a lot of goodiebags )
They both aren't dual cores so I'd rather not get either one, lol.
But if it's between the two, S is the right one to get....

That's not many games
Playing gameloft games, fruit ninja, anything that uses multi-touch, enjoy the random actions. (especially games like Dungeon Defender, Pocket Legends..etc)
If you don't play games, then 70% of your multi-touch issue has been addressed
Google maps? Use another GPS app. I'm using PAPAGO for myself...works fine
