I have a Desire at the moment with Vodafone... its been dropping calls and Vodafone said they think the handset has failed and agreed to replace it... this was 6 weeks ago almost... so I eventually got the hump and told vodafone they can have it back.
I've had the chance to buy an Orange branded black Desire that I'm going to run on a sim only contract....
I have no idea on Linux.... my questions are really is it easy to flash a stock HTC (hopefully froyo) like it is on winmo devices? - also is it straight forward to unlock an Orange phone?....
And has anyone managed to wipe the orange logo off with spirit wipe or similar?
I just want an unbranded phone really...
How heavy is the orange ROM compared to say the Vodafone one which appears to be a factory HTC Desire..
A Desire branded and locked to Orange is probably one of the worst ones you could have chosen! No offence intended. It's just that when you come to de-brand them, there has been a common issue with people de-branding there Orange branded phone and the wi-fi stops working. Whilst I think there may be a fix somewhere, I'm not sure if this is limited to it actually running on the Orange network, as opposed to the de-branding procedure itself.
As for rooting it, it is possible, quite a bit more difficult with the Desire than it used to be with older Android devices though. Here is a guide to rooting your Desire:
http://www.knowyourcell.com/htc/htc-desire/desire-guides/474135/how_to_root_the_htc_desire.html
Also if you wish to de-brand your phone, you can find this guide here:
http://community.giffgaff.com/t5/Other-Off-Topic/Debranding-Unlocking-an-HTC-Desire/td-p/23317
Debranding and unlocking are -not- the same thing.
Debranding is removing the branded screen at boot time, along with the applications imposed on you by networks.
Unlocking is the process whereby the phone becomes usable on other networks.
You're better off following the guide off MoDaCo seeing as Paul over there was first to root the Desire!!!
@EddyOS - Good idea
Hi are there any issues with debranding the desire with the gold card method? It's on orange.
Thanks

I have a question for all you technical types out there. I have to admit that my knowledge about these things is pretty limited.
I tried to order a HTC Desire as part of a contract upgrade and it seems that I have hit a road block when it comes to getting a unbranded phone. I can get one relatively quick and easy if it is branded (i.e. T-Mobile or Vodafone) and my netprovider is neither.
My question is: does it make a difference (branded or un-branded)? Or using a branded phone with a different Sim card?
Orr is it possible or necessary to change the Rom to unbranded?
I would really appreciate whatever advice I could get.
Thanks.
Shouldn't make a difference. Either way you can simply flash the unbranded Rom using a goldcard.

Hi Cedeel, what is a Goldcard???? Like I said, I know almost nothing about these things.
Thanks for having patience with me.
You could do a simple search. Basically, it will allow you to flash any signed Rom for your device.

Not sure about in Germany but here in the UK Vodafone leave their phones unbranded (inside and out) - mine certainly is. All you really need to do is get the phone unlocked to use another netwrk's sim in it.

vodafone UK no longer SIM lock their phones. This has been the case for the last year or 2.

They do, however, have a different vendor ID than the generic WWE ROM so you have to wait for VF to approve it
My first post, but I've been lurking for a while. After some quick advice if possible, can anybody confirm if my Desire is unbranded or not. Got it from Vodafone but put my mate's SIM (O2) in it the other day and it worked fine, so thought it was unbranded. Finally decided to go down the Custom ROM route, so thought I'd just double check, stumbled across this
"Go to Settings>About Phone>Software version and see what the FW version is - branded is x.xx.161.x, unbranded is x.xx.405.x"
whilst searching, so had a quick check of firmware version and it is 1.19.161.5, so seems to be a branded phone. Is this correct? If it is, then I'll just create a goldcard. Any advice would be much appreciated.

In NL T-Mobile doesn't sell branded Desires. I'm not sure about Germany too.
However, I do know that some phones with another provider get their software updates much later.
I also wonder if you have a Carphone Warehouse or Phone House near you. I know they exist in Germany and if it's like the UK stores they sell all their phones unlocked on or off contract and you get similar if not better deals to the networks.
Hey there
I have a quastion I hope is not too dull:
I bought an unlocked Desire from T-Mobile Germany and am on a pre-paid contract with simyo (e-plus). My Desire shows the T-Mobile Logo on boot and that's all about visual branding.
So, who will be responsible for the Froyo-OTA? Is it simyo? And will the simyo (unbranded) OTA even be applicable on my T-Mob Desire? Or should I consider debranding?
Thanks guys!
T-Mobile will be responsible for your Froyo update.... I wouldnt hold your breath it will take them months to release it...
I debranded an Orange Desire and it did the previous OTA update the minute I switched it on after flashing.... the HTC ROM is way better than the Orange one... definitely de-brand your phone
But how does T-Mob get access to my Desire, when I'm on a different carrier? Kinda not get it.
About debranding: Guess this link is legit, but are there occasions to brick the phone or lose all my contacts? Never considered circumventing anything, as i'm super happy with htc's sensed android.
cheers and thx already
Hey XDA,
I know theres many threads on unlocking the Desire.
But none seem to have my combanation of it being on Orange and sucessfully running an unbranded Froyo 2.2 android (Non-Rooted).
At the moment im stuck with orange and wish to be with o2 because simply orange cant beat my pay as you go tariff on o2.
By the looks of it the T-Mobile Desire is easier to unlock, which annoys me.
I've tried using thephoneunlockers which was awful and took me a long battle to get my money back. I have emailed HTCCode but have ad no reply.
I did have a Rebel Sim on its way but after hearing how it damages your battery and hardware I soon emailed them asking for my money back.
Also lurking on the internet there is a rumor saying unlocking an Orange Desire on the debranded Froyo 2.2 will kill its wifi, and if you ask me a phone without a wifi is like a phone without a screen useless.
So please tell me what to do XDA im sick to death of finding dead ends and having emails from unlockers saying my IMEI and Operator combination cannot be found.
Will I have to stick to the Orange network? or has anyone been in my situation and come out with a glorious Unlocked & Unbranded HTC Desire :O
EDIT: Sorry To The Admins If I Put This Thread In The Wrong Place!
Dont want to be seen to be stating the obvious, or if you have tried already, but you do know that you can buy an unlock code from orange directly? for about 20 quid or so. They have to sell/give it to you by law after a certain period, so dont let them fob you off, and its got nothign to do with terminating the contract etc. You call them, ask for it, pay, and they HAVE to give it to you.
Hi,
I am just about to get a DHD but I have 2 Options of the Network either on 3 or Orange Uk, However I am on Tmobile UK but I ll be unlocking/debranding the phone for my own use.
I have come across a fried who got his from 3 UK and it came unlocked, so I am not sure if anyone else Knows if it comes unlock/unbranded etc..
Just need to know before deciding which one to go for.
Thanks in advance.
I am leaving orange to go to 3uk i have found the signel better than orange so far and lots cheaper, As for unlocked mine had no branding on it at all, after about a hour it was s-off ,sim unlocked etc.. with no problems at all.
I was with orange for over 10 years but what with there expansive talk plans , small internet useage etc.. i switched , But know i having problems get my number off them..
A work colleague got a DHD from 3 and it was branded, at least until I got him on the latest AR HD ROM and debranded it for him.
From stock you'll get branded splashscreen, bootanim and some 3 apps. The handset itself has no branding on it though. Dunno if it came locked as he got it on 3 to use it on 3 so I had no need to test.
Someone else at work had one on Orange and that has their logo on the rear casing. I'm not sure about software branding but I think it's safe to say it will knowing what Orange are like.
Thanks for the reply guys..
I have a HD on Orange and 2 of my friends.
There is no branding on the phone anywhere.
There is no branding on the ROM either.
It's about time Orange stop messing with ROMS.

Were they from from a reseller or Orange direct?
The guy here at work with the Orange branded DHD got his from Orange direct.
If you get them from Phones4U, Car Phone Ware House etc then most of the time it will be unlocked & unbranded as they just get one off the shelf and then give you a SIM card to suit the network you just signed up for.
Same with T-Mobile. I did my upgrade with them on the phone but they had no stock left so they said I could pick one up from a local CPW store, which I did. No branding for me
Wow!!
Think i got lucky with my DHD.
I got mine from a "three" store, It had the stock rom installed no "3" branding anywhere!
(was sim free too) ^_^
i got my dhd with orange online, the only branding on the device whas the orange boot animation, it also came with older software so it was easly rooted. another good thing about orange is the "your orange" app on the market, letting you view your current spendings, how many mins and data you have left and your current bill
I've been on Orange for years. The only problem I have is when I'm in a 2G area and a data connection is active - any incoming voicecalls go straight to voicemail. This is because Orange prioritize data over voice, and 2G can't handle both simultaneously. No problem on 3G. Vodaphone prioritize voice in these circumstances.
Anyway, at the end of my contract I said I want to go monthly SIM-only (having bought my dhd off contract and sold my Touch HD) . Orange offered me 300 any network minutes, unlimited landline, 1Gb data, 15 picture messages, and a Desire for £13 per month. I promptly bit their hand off. Now selling the Desire....

Right. I've just rooted and flashed my own Desire HD, which was unlocked and unbranded so it wasn't too bad to start with, and that got me thinking about getting the wife's Wildfire S rooted too. So, looking through these forums it seems like it needs an XTC-Clip to make it s-off then you're off and running. I checked with a local mobile place earlier and, according to the chap there, yes they have an XTC-Clip (he showed it to me) but they are waiting for an update to be able to unlock phones with it (whether that's all phones or just some I don't know and didn't ask). I asked about whether, even if it didn't unlock the phone, it would make it s-off. Unfortunately he didn't know and I didn't have the phone with me.
Now, I know very little about the clip and, without knowing where the one this chap had came from etc, I could try to check out solutions until the cows come home. Is the guy correct? Could he be waiting for an update? And, as I asked him, does the fact that the clip can't unlock a phone preclude it from making it s-off?
Oh, I'm in the UK BTW, and I'm not worried, at the moment, about unlocking the phone as we can only get one signal where we live anyway (Vodafone) I just want to get rid of the bloatware on the phone (as this one is branded as well as being locked).
Thanks in advance.
Dave
The XTC clip does occasionally need updates, but they're small and you can get them over the internet.
It's been able to unlock the WFS for a while now, so it sounds like BS to me...
