Right. I've just rooted and flashed my own Desire HD, which was unlocked and unbranded so it wasn't too bad to start with, and that got me thinking about getting the wife's Wildfire S rooted too. So, looking through these forums it seems like it needs an XTC-Clip to make it s-off then you're off and running. I checked with a local mobile place earlier and, according to the chap there, yes they have an XTC-Clip (he showed it to me) but they are waiting for an update to be able to unlock phones with it (whether that's all phones or just some I don't know and didn't ask). I asked about whether, even if it didn't unlock the phone, it would make it s-off. Unfortunately he didn't know and I didn't have the phone with me.
Now, I know very little about the clip and, without knowing where the one this chap had came from etc, I could try to check out solutions until the cows come home. Is the guy correct? Could he be waiting for an update? And, as I asked him, does the fact that the clip can't unlock a phone preclude it from making it s-off?
Oh, I'm in the UK BTW, and I'm not worried, at the moment, about unlocking the phone as we can only get one signal where we live anyway (Vodafone) I just want to get rid of the bloatware on the phone (as this one is branded as well as being locked).
Thanks in advance.
Dave
The XTC clip does occasionally need updates, but they're small and you can get them over the internet.
It's been able to unlock the WFS for a while now, so it sounds like BS to me...

I wanted to debrand, but apparently debranding locks Orange UK phones or does it?
Anyway tried HTCUnlock.com/Unlockingonline.com
Got the following.
The reason why your order could not be processed is as follows:
VERY NEW HTC HANDSET - PLEASE UPGRADE SERVICE
The scammers even though it was advertised as £12.99, they want me to order again this time paying £29
So the next one I tried,
HTCCode.com
Something similar, they could not unlock.
Anyone any ideas? I don't really need it unlocked as would be using on Orange anyway but wouldn't want to be locked out.

When did you purchase the code from HTCCODE? Our database was updated on the 28th July and thereafter we have codes for all HTC Desire.
I suggest you take a look at this thread :
http://www.htccode.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=2187
I bought a Desire for my girlfriend yesterday and I've unlocked it at http://www.htcimeiunlock.com/htc-desire-unlock
I payed $25 on the new database because I was in a hurry and didn't wanted to wait and see if the code can be found in the standard database first($16).

I had the same thing with my week old desire (tried unlocking the day after getting it). They said that I could do a more expensive search that would probably work, however they suggested just waiting for HTC to release the new database.
It all depends on when your phone was manufactured and what database update will include your code.

Nope. Not with mine anyway and also LennyUK is running custom firmware on his orange locked Desire.
The only things to be careful of is the HBOOT version and also make sure you flash the correct radio.
I've tested 5.09.00.08 and 5.09.00.20 and they both work with my phone.
Telus
I used htcimeiunlock.com. They tell from the start the price for each search options ($15 and $24).
Mine was $15.
why are you all paying for unlocking???
Is it possible to do it without paying?
You can try asking your provider for the unlock code, I think they charge 15 pounds.
Right now there is no free way to unlock the new htc devices.

Why, will you pay for everyone?
hello all,
although i read some topics i couldn't find the answer that's why i need to ask this to all. my friend bought htc desire but without sim-unlock, he said it didn't work although he rooted it. so is there a way for sim-unlock for rooted phones. if yes, i'm going to upgrade my phone from "hero" to "desire"
at least can anyone give me a link for this?
Rooting a phone doesnt give you sim-unlock.
If you want your phone to be sim-unlocked you will either have to buy it like that or obtain the unlock code from your carrier or obtain one online.
I know over at the DHD forum there is a radio s-off tool that also is able to give you sim-unlock but as far as i am aware the same procedure isnt possible for the desire yet.

Why must the phone be sim-unlocked in order for you to upgrade? Its easy enough to obtain the unlock code from your carrier, even if the ask a small fee ... just phone them and say you are going on a business trip overseas and your phone needs to be sim-unlocked!
And if you are lucky you might even get a sim-unlocked phone from your carrier, depends what your carriers policy is regarding branding etc.
If you want a 'fool-proof' plan to get a unlocked phone just buy online.
You shouldnt let a carriers foolishness of branding and sim-locking their phone prevent you from having a new phone!

Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question - if I follow all the steps to root my One X, does this mean it is open to all networks? I remember rooting my Desire, and installing a custom ROM, but I had to run another tool before I sold it on to someone on a different network...

Nope. Rooting doesn't remove the SIM/network lock.
Thank you for the reply Tiersten. Is there a way of removing the SIM/network lock? There are a few websites which want to charge in the region of £20 for an "unlock code". The phone I have is O2 branded, but I want to use my Orange SIM. Do I have to pay for a code?
HTC are offering unlock for a few quid, there's a thread in here probably a few pages back.
If I follow the procedure from XDA TV, unlocking the bootloader through HTCDEV, install CWM recovery, unlock and root stock rom from the XDA thread, flash the Leedroid Super SU, then (finally) the Leedroid ROM - has this removed any SIM lock and/or branding?

No unless there is a tool in the dev section that specifically design to unlock the sim lock. Root and flashing custom rom does not remove the lock on O2. If you bought the One X 2nd hand then either get the seller to go to O2 and get it unlocked for you as it is still linked to his contract or you will need a 3rd Party to do it.

Its not HTC. Its somebody on eBay for £1.44. Looks like it is legitimate though as quite a lot of people have said it worked for them.
I can confirm its legit, got it unlocked within 20 mins yesterday. You fill in the form at the bottom of the description.
BTW if you're an o2 pay monthly customer o2 unlock it for free
if you pay over $600 for the phone, then there is no reason why it should cost money to unlock it. now, if you bought it cheap with a plan through a carrier, then i can see why they would charge you. i wouldn't tolerate that nonsense. i paid 619.99 and if my ATT sim doesn't work, they are going to make it work if they want to keep me in contract. sometimes, all you have to do is get mad at the manager and make a scene. ;p
Thanks everyone for the help. I got in touch with O2, and as the phone was supplied with a business bundle, they unlocked the phone free of charge. I was provided with the phone by my company, but as they don't allow personal use of the company phone, I wanted to use my personal Orange plan out of company hours. O2, by the way, were very helpful!

If you've not got it from a carrier then it'll be SIM-free anyway so will work with any SIM in the first place
I have the SGHI747M. I just returned from Thailand. I rooted my phone but the sim card I purchased on True Mobile in Thailand would not work. It kept saying "unable to connect to network" please enter PIN". As much as I could overcome the language barrier, and visiting three Samsung stores, they said I was not rooted. I run Titanium pro, root checker, etc., and all work
My girlfriend's Iphone worked like a damn. I am confused in spite of it now being too late. My carrier in Canada, Telus< is about to launch Jellybean, and the other question I have is whether I need to go back to stock o/s do install their system. Thanks all
PS: I am using this thread as T-Mobile and Telus have same hardware
Grant
Two things:
1 - I believe the SGHI747M is the ATT version of the phone
2 - if you are trying to use the phone with a different carrier, then you need to unlock your phone (different from rooting). This is what i gather from you saying its requesting a PIN when you plug in your SIM card. You can look for unlocking services on the net to get a PIN for your phone.
if a tree falls in the woods and no one is around to hear does it make a sound?
What came first the chicken or the egg?
can you have root without root?
how much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?
lol yea rooting is "administrator access" so to speak to the operating system, drivers, and such.
Unlocking allows you to use the phone with another carrier...
two totally different things beyond the fact that a lot of people who root tend to unlock as well.
Thanks very much. I honestly thought that "rooting" unlocked the phone. I guess I will wait until my next trip out of Canada!

That's an HTC thing where rooting it unlocks the phone (S-Off). Different game in Samsung's world. Rooting and unlocking are two separate processes.
Unlocking
Is there a simple way to "unlock", or should I just submit IME to unlock service for $35?
Pretty sure there's cheaper unlock services out there. Try ebay.
Probably won't work, but have you tried using a Telus simcard?
And to use the ota update, yes you'd need to be running a full stock system.
Easier though to just download the firmware and update through Odin.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
ok so i admittedly have unlocked a desire z a while back but it was a right faff and it was a spare phone,
iv now got a brand new HTC M8
its locked to vodaphone (boo)
and has a vodaphone rom (again boo)
so iv tried to unlock the phone with a paid for code as its a lot lot easier but none off the sites seem to be able to give me a code. they just say sorry and give me my money back.
is it possible to unlock the phones sim lock without S-off?
if not, which is better, S-off or htcdev.? id really like to keep the warranty on this phone as iv got 2 years supposedly and HTC have been really good before
im assuming htc dev will void warranty's since you have to give them your phone details? is S-off detectable? can i turn it back on?
Sunshine app is 25 bucks ... But will unlock your bootloader and give you s-off, without HTC knowing about it.
That's what I did.
Then I think you can Sim unlock. I say think, cause I haven't done it with this phone.
