If I get an Evo with a new account then have Sprint de-activate the EVO and activate an old HTC Hero I have, will they be able to change my plan to a non Evo plan so I dont have to keep paying the extra $10 ????
Why I ask?
A friend of mine is getting an EVO for him and a Hero for his wife. Im thinking of asking him to get 2 EVO's and will trade my Hero and $200 for the EVO. But I need to know if he's going to be able to remove the extra $10(4G) from his bill.

The $10 follows the Evo. Whichever account it is active on will pay the unlimited 4g+3g premium.
Yea this should work because when i bought my Evo I just made a temporary sprint account with a hero to test out sprint and android for 11 days, so when the Evo came out, I wanted to keep my ported number from AT&T. This is why I couldn't just cancel my sprint account I had already made, so I had 2 phones for about 3 days. I swapped the Evo's number (some new phone # I already forgot) with the Hero, and they moved the $10 charge to my evo account. Then I cancelled the hero account
nope the $10 evo price follows the evo to any account
they can tell its an evo from the esn so no matter what you have to pay the $10 extra fee

if I buy the evo on ebay can I keep my old plan or do I have to change to an everything plan. If I just register the phone online how can they make me change plans
You have to change to an Everything Plan. It won't let you register the ESN online for your account unless you change plans.

If you really want to see, try buying an instinct, Pre/Pixi, hero, moment or BB Curve/Bold online and keep your existing plan. The system will automatically advise you that you MUST switch to a compatable plan to use the device. There is no way that you can add a phone like that on an older plan. The only acceptable plan will be either the Everything Data or the Simply Everything.

Because the plans are tied to the serial numbers. Try to activate a serial number that requires a certain plan, and it WILL change you over.
thanks you for the info. now I have an expensive decision to make
I'd like to piggyback on the OP's question. I already have an everything plan (Hero user). I've seen some good deals on used EVOs (clean esn), and have three questions:
1) How hard is it to activate an EVO from home for use on my existing plan, and
2) Is sprint's device checking specific enough to see that I'm on the Evo instead of a different smartphone and force me into the everything + $10 plan?
3) Assume 1 and 2 work out the way I want, when 4G comes to my market, will sprint be able to see my device using 4G and charge me extra for it?
As a side note, if they decide to pressure me into the +$10 i'll probably go with it anyway, but at this point I'm not in my upgrade window and have no intention of paying full list price for an EVO via the sprint store/Radio Shack. I was planning to buy an evo upon return from my last deployment, but went with Hero because of the arbitrary $10/month, but at this point i'm over it and suffering from chronic evo-envy. Thanks in advance for any useful input.

1) Not hard at all, but you have to call Sprint and give them the info from the new phone. They are going to know it is an Evo right away.
2) Yes; even if you could activate it without calling Sprint, they would know your ESN belongs to an Evo.
3) No; the $10 fee inlcudes 4G access.

Its really easy to activate it at home. I got mine through Amazon about 2 weeks after it debuted and set it up no problem. I think I had to do it over the phone, but its pretty easy. Just follow the instructions after you turn it on.
It does know. When I activated my Evo, it appeared on my Account right away as an Evo and the $10 addon automatically appeared on my next bill.
Since the second one won't work, I guess number three doesn't need an answer. Hope that helps. I had Evo envy after the first time I saw it in a store (the day it came out) Bought it through Amazon for full price and now my fiancé uses my Hero as a wifi hotspot. Definitely worth the switch if you can afford it.
Thanks for the help folks.
since virgin uses sprints tower would it be possible to use the evo on virgin because im think about buy a used one from a friend and i dont want to sign a 2 year deal
Nope would not work. If you really want a evo and your friend will sell you his then you would not need to sign a two year contract. The two is only required for people who buy a new phone or upgrade there phone and do not wish to pay retail price

why are you starting multiple threads for the same question?

the thing is that sprint doesn't a have plan where some one can buy a phone at full price and use it on a month to month deal or do they and i just cant find in on there webpage like with Verizon i bought a droid when they first came out but paid full price but used it mouth to mouth does sprint have somethink like that
Try going to a Sprint Corporate store and asking.
PROTIP: Bestbuy is not Sprint Corporate.
The Evo on metropcs works great for me for the $40 a month price, though you'll have to get the esn added through houdini in a non-official manner so to speak. Search craigslist and there'll be a ton of adds of people who can add the evo to the metropcs network.
so in other words, yes it's possible as the cdma radio hardware is the same,
however some people who are not lawyers think it's illegal to change the ESN
even though you're not stealing any service.
Protip: Sprint bought Virgin last week. They already had 51% share and decided to purchase.
Virgin does not allow flashed phones on their network (sprint). Now you can flash evo to verizon, cricket and metropc and other verizon based providers. Cricket is nice because for 55 you get android plan with everything unlimited and it runs on network that evo was designed for.
Nothing is impossible in our world.
Anyone out there dedicated and financially capable of trying? lol

You'd be wrong if you sincerely believed this.
Works with $25/month plan perfectly...

You had the Virgin Mobile Intercept though, not the Sprint one, right? It doesn't matter that they're technically the same network. They use different databases to check ESN numbers. You'd have to buy an Android phone from them (get the Optimus V, it's cheaper and better than the Intercept) and spoof the ESN of the Evo to match the other phone's. Make sure only one is turned on at a time though or the ESN will be banned, and since they'll have the same ESN neither will work!
Is it illegal? No. You're not scamming anyone. You'd still be paying the same amount of money. Plus, you own the original phone with the ESN you'd be copying, so it's not illegal.
I'm using HTC Evo on Cricket now, and next couple weeks I'll try to make it work on Virgin base on what I did to transfer from Sprint to cricket. Just change the prl ,ip .........I'll see
Google it and I found the prl from the thread called : How to flash a phone to virgin
Good luck everybody .
I think I know what thread you are talking about, does data work on the phone as well as voice?
I've heard of people getting talk and text working but not data, so far with the evo.
Hello, So I have an intercept already and just bought an EVO, how do you spoof the esn of the evo? I really need your help guys! Thanks.
I got the email, but I've never done it.
evo
thanks for the reply. I would appreciate anyone elses help!

You can find out what the data settings are on howareforums, in a thread called How To: Flash a phone to virgin mobile, but they won't tell you how to change an esn.
Some people thinks it's illegal to change esn # so we aren't allowed to tell how it's done on most forums.
If you look around online and youtube you can find out.
If you end up getting it working let us know.
Alright, so due to Sprint's new policy of premiere customers I won't be able to upgrade this june like I normally would(for 1 year upgrdae)
So i decided to buy a clean ESN HTC EVO Shift 4G via eBay.
My plan was to, buy the evo shift, which I did, and sell my evo on ebay.
but now, maybe I'm just paranoid... but will I be able to activate the Shift when I get it in the mail?
How does that work with sprint? would they not let me? hellpp??
thanks!
Yea you will be able to activate it as long as it has a clean esn

phew, okay. Thank you. I wasn't sure...
You can swap out your phone for the evo shift no problem as long as the esn is clean and the phone is not active on another account. I would wait to make sure. Get the shift running before you sell yours.

Not only will sprint let you, they'll even help you. Of course. Why wouldn't they?
You can call them and tell them you bought a Shift and you want to activate it and they'll help you out no trouble at all.
I bought out the remainder of my contract to receive full upgrade early. For me 6 months remaining cost $65 to save $250 on new evo.
Cancel Sprint Contract
So if I cancel my sprint contract and pay the final bill succesfully, including the cancellation charges, I will be able to sell my EVO as having a 'clean' ESN?
The only way you get a bad esn is if you don't pay your bills, and sprint has to shut off your account themselves, or if you report it stolen..if you switch phones through contract, you won't get a bad esn.
Thx for the info. That's what I thought but wanted to make sure I didn't misrepresent myself.
sent from my Ginger EVO
I was planning on getting an EVO 3D, but with the speaker problem and reception problem I keep seeing gripes about I think I may pass even if it does get full root.
Problem is I have two accounts that are eligible for full upgrade.
One is on my wifes which still has Touch Pro2 on Sero (which she wants to stay on).
And mine with a 4G I bought on Ebay on Sero Premium + $10.00
If I were to buy two EVO 4G's from sprint and not activate them (I might keep one for back up and one I might sell (ideally seal)). Will I screw up the discounts because they are not activated?
I do expect my contracts to reset. But I believe it's activation that triggers discounts and new contract.
I just called sprint and they said I'd get full discounts with no activations. Even on the Line that does not have a matching EVO 4G plan.
I dont mean to thread jack but i believe im wondering the same thing...
im eligible for an upgrade but i dont want to get the 3D and my wife is perfectly content with her Epic...so if i were to use my upgrade to get an evo then sell it and make a little money (i got a baby on the way) would there be any fees attached to not activating the phone?
That's exactly what I asked and he said no extra fees. I think it helps that all the "rebates" are instant. He even said sell it on craigslist if you want.
I wonder which will yield more profit, a 4G or 3D
If you use your upgrade to buy the phone whether you activate it or not you will lose your upgrade.

Hey guys so I recently lost my S-OFF and my phone is really ****ing with me right now and I am looking into getting a used one off Ebay to hold me off until i can upgrade with sprint for a new phone. My question is what is the price i should be expecting to pay for an HTC EVO 4g on ebay or something. Also am i able to get an HTC EVO from someone and just change teh phone number to my current one or will that have a charge from sprint.
please and thanks
Either way you are looking into possible $36 activation fee (sprint come up with them recently - for activation of any device even swap). Where are you located ?

Is this something new? About six months ago I replaced phones on a line in my family account. I switched out an Android phone with a Blackberry I bought off eBay and didn't get charged any fee.
