Hi all!
Glad to found this forum, I just got my Xda Exac 4G 64Mb from O2 (sim free by default)
I've spent lat 3h reading this forum but most of tutorials are outdated, so i have some suestion just to make thimgs clear for me.
1. Do i need to unlock my phone first with "HTC_Uni_Unlock_v1" or other apps (if other please give a name and link) before falshing new rom
2. Do i need to use some kind of loader or included installer will do all the job (i know i need to go to bootloader mode)
3. How safe it is?
4. How can i backup my orginal rom in case i would like to go back to orginal one, or where i can download orginal o2 rom?
5. Is device getting power from usb durning flashing? I dont know how long this battery will last I dont want power lose durning flashing.
6. Tomal or Luca? Which one will be better for me?
7. Where in Ireland i can get memory upgreade?
Thanks for all the answers Cheers
Welcome to forums
here all you need yo know for flashing:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=567017
It is 100% safe if you follow instructions
Charge your battery to 100% before flashing and take out sim card and sd card
I recommend Tomal, but it´s up to you, depending on what you want from a ROM
Read, Search, Respect and Enjoy!
so just run the instaler and follow info on the screen? no need for SuperCID? or maybe installer will set device to SuperCID by it self?
what i want from a rom? well... a nice look, to be stable and fast, and have nice functions
ok since noone really wants to answer my questions i did update myself..
here's what i learn (maybe someone will need this)
you dont need to unlock your device if it's sim free
you need to have all the files you want to update in one folder
all you need to do is run ROMUpgradeUt.exe and follow info on the screen
for me whole procedure took 2-3 min
thats it ....
This is my first time with Android operating system and i'm totally clueless from where to start.
I searched desire forums already but information is too much and i end creating up this thread.
Before root/flash and other things i need to clear up few things before i run into trouble. so please be easy.
1. I want to install Apps on micro-sd but can't find the way to do it.
2. How to find out My HTC desire is Branded or Unbranded. On a side note, When i turn on my Mobile I see Virgin Media Logo.
3. What are the benefits to root my phone.
4. If i root my phone will i lose the HTC sense UI? or i need to flash my phone to a custom based ROM?
5. What is Froyo? is it a new version of Android 2.2?
Last but not the least, can i root my device using Windows 7 64bit?
Thanks in advance.

1. You need A2SD (apps to sd). Only available if you root.
2. Your phone is branded so you need a gold card.
3. You get a choice of custom roms, you get A2SD, and you can use apps that require root access.
4. Nope you can use a rooted stock rom, or better still, a custom rom with sense in it.
5. Froyo is the name for the new Android OS. It's 2.2
And last but not least, yes you can! I used win7 64bit. Use the riskfree root guide on modaco. It's painless and very easy.

Are you sure my Phone is branded? because the box i have is white HTC one? and i don't see any virgin logo on it.
Plus i googled it and it came up with this information.
Go to Settings>About Phone>Software version and see what the FW version is - branded is x.xx.161.x, unbranded is x.xx.405.x
i checked mine and it says 405..so is it still branded?
If you have the virgin logo then I'm 99% sure you are branded and will need a goldcard.

this is getting quite confusing..
i just found this thread on XDA :/..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6227438&postcount=11
I haven't mentioned yet, that i'm in Pakistan and using other Network other than Virgin Media as we don't have that carrier. So basically its a sim free Phone. I mailed HTC regarding this.
any other way out to find about the branded and unbranded phone? other than just the logo ?
If you are going to root it, then try without the goldcard, if you get errors then you will know you need it.
Or simply play safe and make a gold card then root anyway. Being network sim unlocked has nothing to do with the phone being branded. I read that post you linked, and that said it was sim free but the sim caused the branding. if you are not using a virgin sim and have the virgin logo etc, I'd say you may well be branded.
It won't hurt to try either way!

Thanks, really appreciate your help.
I'd like to know one thing, as i read on few other sites that android 2.2 is due on Monday officially by HTC, so will i be able to flash my rom without any problem or i have to go through the goldcard and root option?
Its delayed for a few months sadly! Hey i just wanted to ask that are you having the time zone prob here in Pak..the phone showing GMT +6 instead of 5? and messing up all the threaded messages?
Im on Ufone btw!
I was wondering, you mentioned its ur first time with Android..why do you want to root it so soon?

yup getting the same +6gmt time..but messages are just fine. btw im using handcent sms/mms client.
i want to root it soon because i'm running out of memory and want to install apps on sd card.
Suppose if i don't root my device and leave it as it is running right now? is it possible to flash my device with the latest HTC froyo? ..
No sadly you cannot flash another rom to the phone without rooting it
Will have to wait for September for the OTA update.
Ive got a branded orange one but still not debranded or rooted it because initially there were problems with wifi not working and stuff like that..But the thing is once the OTA is here and you want to have that, you wont be able to the custom rom...you would have to revert to your original rom and then get it..
Here is the method for rooting it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696189
But I'd say otherwise. Maybe you should delve a bit deeper into the OS before rooting it because there is a chance to brick your phone if you make a mistake.
The solution that I am using for the low storage is that removing unnecessary app from the phone. For example you have installed google earth on the phone, The apk file would be 5.9mb but once installed it will expand to 13mb and eat up a large chunk of that space.
To check the memory consumed by each app go to:
Settings>Applications>Manage Applications
So this will enable you to have a rough idea of whats draining your memory.
Hope this helps!

That last bit was specific to Vodafone UK, the x.xx.161.x refers to their product code. the x.xx.405.x is the product code of SIM-free devices. If you phone is x.xx.405.x then you have an unbranded phone (for reference, Virgin's product code is x.xx.351.x)

Well thanks. ..such a relief.
than why i have virgin Media logo on it? its a bug? as mentioned by other XDA user.
Guys finally updated the firmware to the latest Generic one without unbranding and creating the Goldcard. everything went smoothly.
But still after update i see the virgin media logo and still im clueless from where does this come after updating to the latest firmware.
so this all clears up that i have the unbranded phone ? right?
In android Market i can't see the Paid apps. Even the Featured Apps page isn't showing. I'm getting No Matching Content in Android Market.
Other than this i can install the free apps without any problem. Anyone facing similar issue?
EDIT: Regarding ROOTING: there are now rooted 2.2 official ROMs available with all kinds of goodies. If you have a rooted phone, or wanted to root anyway, you have the option of using those ROMs. This thread is then not for you.
BY FOLLOWING THE BELOW STEPS YOU WILL LOSE ROOT. If you want to root in the future, use a custom rom from the development section.
You do NOT need to have a rooted phone to do the below modifications. Everything is done using only official HTC Roms. You will have the official 2.2 Update as a result of the below steps.
Now back to your regular programme
-------------------
Ok for those who have itchy hands and must have the europe Froyo update on their non-Europe handsets:
The trick: treat your phone as if it were branded, even if you thought it wasn't. This applies especially to those with chinese input. This means you will need to do two things: create a gold card and de-brand your phone to European WWE 1.21 firmware.
Estimated time: give it an evening. There are a lot of things to do, so it may take a while, even if you're awesome and you've rooted and done other things to your phone you shouldn't do
Creating a gold card has been covered in detail see:
http://theunlockr.com/2010/03/10/how-to-create-a-goldcard/
But a few TIPS to note:
1. backup whatever you have on your memory card, just in case before starting the gold card creation process. you may have to format it.
2. look for the gold card creation tool, it will save you a lot of time
3. you will need to store your upgrade image on your gold card. when you are done creating your gold card, double check that when you unplug it from your computer and plug it back in, you are still able to put files in it. ie you do NOT get the message from Windows suggesting you should format it. If you get this message, do the gold card process again.
Now that you have a Gold Card...
Step 1: Unlocking
Get the WWE image:
http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Bra...00.28U_4.06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed.exe
This is a windows installer and is run from your computer. This WILL wipe all data from your phone and perform a factory reset.
I recommend using something like myBackup to backup your important information (bookmarks, smses etc). You can even back up Apps with myBackup, but since you are wiping data you might as well reinstall as you are not likely to get your Apps preferences back. Reinstalling also puts more of your apps into your SD memory, froyo style.
So, do a backup to your regular SD card, shut down. Pop in your Gold Card, boot up your phone, go into HTC sync mode (this enables USB debugging), and then run the above exe.
Follow instructions in the installer.
Step 2:
Now you have an unbranded phone. Keep your gold card in there, don't bother setting up your phone as you can do all this after we get froyo. And if something fails, you will be kicking yourself for having to do it again
Grab the update image from:
http://liveimage.htc.com/OTA_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.09.405.8-1.21.405.2_release4dua3bcrut4wrv30.zip
Hopefully it stays up there for some time, but if it gets taken down I'm sure you will be able to find someone who has a copy
When done downloading, rename this file "update.zip" and copy this file onto your Gold Card.
This is why it was important in step 1 to make sure your Gold Card can still accept writing files to it.
Step 3: The update
Shut down your phone. Boot recovery mode.

Hi Annafil - first - many many thanks for sharing this - I had purchased a Desire from the grey market in the UAE, and it was from Singapore, and I couldnt get rid of the Chinese keyboard options that kept coming up every time I typed. I couldnt also use the official wwe roms - and then ur post came along. Now thanks to you, I have the wwe rom, with Froyo chugging along perfectly fine on my Desire Thanks a ton.
Just a quick comment - refer the instructions quoted above - the video is not really reflecting the right tasks to be done at the 3rd step - I looked around and found these comments, and thought will put them down - you might want to use this in your comments as an alternative to the video
When you want to launch the recovery image
1. Turn on your device with 'volume down' pressed and select 'Recovery'
2. When the exclamation mark appears, press and hold 'volume up' then press 'power'
3. Select the second option, 'Apply sdcard:update.zip'
For more information, see video for instructions:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zi0PTV992WA
In recovery mode, use the option to load "Update.zip" from memory card.
This will kick start the update.
If you have done everything right, it will do some copying (an error about failing to load something related to cache is normal, ignore it). Your phone will reboot, show you an upgade in progress icon, reboot again into your regular phone mode and tell you you have successfully upgraded. It will then do a quick load from 0 to 100%, and then present you with keyboard settings.
You now have froyo. Shut down, swap out your gold card for your regular card with your myBackup backup, boot up.
Get online, grab myBackup from the market place. If you did this all within 30 days you've still got your free trial, so click restore inside myBackup and have fun

Yes thanks to your write up, I have now in my hand a froyo-ed HTC Desire Woo Hoo!
Hi to all SG desire users,
Able to install back chinese input after you upgrade to froyo using european rom?
Out of interest... are we able to do the initial rooting of the Asian rom via the 'Unrevoked' method??
Its a hell of a lot less complicated than making a gold card... but I havent heard much feedback on whether it will work with the faux-branded Asian roms.
My current stock rom:
Firmware version 2.1-update1
Baseband version 32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.02_2
Kernel version 2.6.29-c8d11160
[email protected]#1
Build number 1.20.751.5 CL171460 release-keys
Software number 1.20.751.5
HBOOT 0.80.000
Cheerz in advance.
Is root required for this?
Chinese input is available for me on world generic. Can't tell you if it's very good since don't use it but it's there.
No, you do not need to root.
Rooting is not the same as making a gold card and won't help you to install the ota successfully.
The rest: my pleasure happy to have saved someone the headache I had trying to do this.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I'd be curious if anyone has an easier way to accomplish the same thing without losing settings, for instance.
Does rooting require to do this processes?
I bought my handset from an importer, how do I work out where its from and what version its running?
Can I completely ruin the phone if this goes wrong?

hye. i'm from asia. ok.. i have several question.
1. Do i have to always keep the goldcard the sdcard after update or i can simply delete the file?
2. Am i be able to auto update (if any) in the future or i have to go through the same procedure again?
3. After Step 1, can i just check for update on the phone instead installing the update from boot recovery mode?

1. No, you don't need the gold card once you are done.
2. If you use the European firmware on an Asian phone, you will likely need the gold card for future updates.
3. Yes, you can, but you have to have the gold card in your phone when you are running the update. So your gold card still has to be your SD card.
the update has a tendency to ask for more space, and then ask you to download again. i figured it would be easier to tell people to run the update.zip because that way less stuff can go wrong. But yeah, it's the same thing.
The update.zip does not wipe your phone. If you have settings on the European 2.1, or if you already used a gold card to go to WWE rom before, you won't lose settings.

I don't think it is because the asian version is 2.19 wheras the world wide english is 2.21.
I had a problem in that the update would not apply - but I had taken out my gold card between applying the 2.1 WWE rom and applying the Froyo update. BTW, if it keeps rebooting, and has a problem with "system" force closing - then you have this problem.
Anyway, in desperation, I thought I would go back to the asian rom - but the euro rom is more recent, and it refused to downgrade (Error 140). Oh well. I do have a successful Euro rom, I just haven't Froyoed it yet - something for tonight.
I have successfully completed 1&2 steps but I am getting error in step3, see the attached screen grab.
I am using a Gold Card to try and get over the signature verification issues.
Does anyone have a suggestion as to what else to try please?
just followed all the steps and my phone is rocking Froyo! yipee. pretty smooth process. took me <2 hrs.
Singapore user here.
I have read all the threads, but as ever on the wonderful forum , they go off in all areas .
All I want to do is delete the APK's from the \system\app folder
I have Orange UK ROM ( 2.2) that works fab for me... but I'd like to delete some ofthe rubbish... ( stocks etc )
Will the "Unrevoked" work on my phone.... there seams to be some confussion now as if you need a gold card or not.
I do not want a new image , I do not want to unlock my phone .. I just want to delete the rubbish on the phone.
This also maybe in the wrong area.
Thanks for your help... just a simple yes or no will do .
Download 'AndroidCommander' - it's a Windows-based app that basically uses adb but with a nicer GUI. You can then remove what you don't want quite easily and I don't think you have to be rooted
stunning app.. but YOU NEED ROOT ACCES !!
Ant one else to my orginal question...??
If you need to be rooted to use AndroidCommander (which just uses adb) then you'd need to be rooted to use adb as a standalone - which would lead to a no to your question...
I'm sure you don't need to be rooted to use adb, though
Thanks, but Orange dont want a new rom .. will Unrevoked work with a gold card ... orginal question .....?????????????????????????????
Ah, right!!!
You shouldn't need a gold card to root the phone, best thing is to wait for someone who has a branded Desire and see what they say. Mine was debranded and so didn't need one
i rooted a branded desire with 2.2 froyo on orange using unrevoked, no problems, but if like me you want to remove the orange bloat ware, rooting alone wont let you, but it will let you flash a genetic rom
so in basic, orange froyo can be rooted with unrevoked without goldcard, but wont let you remove orange pish
Mike
Anyone know how to remove the bloatware the easiest way, then?
I'd rather not have to flash a generic rom because I want to use some of Orange's facilities.. just not the game demos and other bloated apps.
You need to root using unrEVOked (which won't change anything bar giving root access) and then use AndroidCommander to remove the gumpf you don't want, leaving what you do!
Yes yes yes , but will this work on an Orange UK Branded phone ? with out killing it ?
Yes it will work on an Orange phone.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Yes it will work otherwise I wouldn't have said to do it!
Once you have rooted with unrevoked you could try using titanium (from the market) to freeze or uninstall system apps. Sometimes its handy to freeze aps rather than uninstall them. Its less hassle than adb/adb commander but you may need the pay version of titanium.
I get this :
The hbbot drivers worked and win xp sees phone correctly .
I then ran reflash.exe, came up after 5 mins Failed to flash recovery image .
All I want is the ROOT permisions , not to put a new rom on it…
Hey , Sorry I am a bit new to xda (noob ) please dont be too hard on me. SO i had a few questions if someone could be kind enuf to answer ..
Model - R800a , Build - 4.0.2.A.0.42 , Andriod 2.3.4 , Baseband - 8x55A- AAABQMAZM-203028D-56
1. I was looking that there are 2-3 different ways to root the xperia play - super one click , flash tool or doomlord root kit... which one is easier or safer and which one should i use ?
2. Do I need to Unlock the Bootloader ? Also How to unlock the bootlader ? I came across this link unlockbootloader . sonymobile . com ... Is this the way to go to unlock the boot loader or is there another simpler way ?
3. Also main reason for me to Root the play is because internal memory is too less with all the bloatware.... I did came across some tutorial which explained how to partition the memory card etc. but i cant find it now any link regarding that will be helpful.
4. Also I am confused as to what is correct sequence of doing these steps is... Root ,Unlock Bootloader,Partition Memory, flash new Kernel,Flash Rom ?
5. Finally All I want to do with my rooted phone is Remove bloatware, Increase internal memory , ability to overclock and Get best gaming performance.... I would prefer Jb but i am not too fussed even if I have to use Gb.. So can u please recommend which kernal and ROm to go for ?
Tnx ,
This thread may help although I'm not sure since I have an R800i and it might not be the same for the R800a:

To free up some storage space, you could move everything to the SD card after rooting or use link2SD
Sent from my R800i using xda app-developers app
You can't root the stock 2.3.4 version, you will need to flash version 2.3.3 or this enhanced 2.3.4 version.
Use the link from the post above and follow the "flash a ftf" guide to flash it. Then follow the root guide.
To solve your issue with low memory. There are many ways to deal with it, but I like using the program LBE Security Master, it can do things such as move apps to sdcard, remove system apps, and prevent apps from autostarting.
