Okay, I promise that I have read until I think my eyes are going to bleed.
I upgraded my BA a few years ago. I was trying it when they forums said that some people were able to get them to work on Cingular. I did it using the WIKI pages which had nothing about cingular, and got the Cingular information from the forums. I got a divorce after I decided to start this upgrade, and could not think about anything else. I would now like to fix this phone, and start using it again.
My phone did upgrade to WM5 and everything worked except for the phone portion. That is where I turn to those of you here for help.
1. How can I find out which version of the upgrade that I installed? 16mb or 32mb?
2. I can not find my original Devicedata.txt. Can I use a generic or copy the data from another phone that a friend of mine bought at the same time? or is the data specific to my phone only? Is their a chance that I can recover this from my phone now?
3. If I can still use this phone which procedure should I use? Downgrade, and then upgrade: just install a few files or cabs? or go with a whole new rom since it was so long ago?
I appreciate any help, and I promise that I have read alot in these groups and the WIKIs.

1) Check settings, system, memory. Although I don't think it matters much if all you want to do is install the newest ROM available.
2) You shouldn't need it if you use maupgradeut_noid.exe to perform the upgrade
3) I think just go with the newest ROM, no need to downgrade as the new ROM isn't going to care what was on there before it.
Just go to the wiki at http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Helmi and download the 1.4Baniaczek R2 ROM. Follow the steps on that wiki page (they start 3/4 of the way down the page) and you should be fine. Step 2 doesn't really apply except part 4 of that step. Step 3 doesn't apply either as long as you use the maupgradeut_noid.exe to do the upgrade (included in the ROM download).
Yes, we're all noobs!!!
I have a brand new Excalibur (I bricked my first one five mins. out of the box) and I attempt to upgrade following instructions on the tutorial posted on these forums.
What's not stated on said tutorial (and no one tells you, only after you bricked your phone) is that YOU MUST BACK UP YOUR ORIGINAL ROM before the upgrade, because if anything goes wrong, that is the only ROM you can flash to your phone to restore it, otherwise IT IS BRICKED. (Believe me, it happened to me).
So, to all you experts reading these, please, help us noobs and post here a complete guide on how to back up your original ROM.
We will thank and worship you forever!!!
These days, there is no need to backup your own Rom.
We have a collection of ROMs on this site alone. Or in my signature.
I do suggest to download one prior to updating your ROM.
This forum uses most of a collection of ROM i have uploaded for everyone.

I have two questions: Firstly, there is no official O2 Xda Cosmo ROM or? Secondly, if you back up the ROM first, how can you flash it back to the device? Is there a tutorial for this?
Thanks

yeah i'm waiting for the official O2 Xda cosmo ROM. i need it badly because my camera doesn't work anymore with new ROM. and i am totally agree to write a clear reminder to backup your original ROM first before upgrading in the upgrading ROM thread. just in case for noob like me....

After rereading, I still have the questions:
1. How is it possible to flash back a saved backup ROM image?
2. If I use a USPL and then something goes wrong while flashing a cooked ROM, can I only re-flash my original ROM (i.e. for XDA Cosmo which doesn't exist)?
Thanks
Okay - maybe I just figured out the answer to my own question: if I flash the USPL-RUU first before flashing a ROM update, maybe this means I can reflash if something goes wrong? Is this correct, or is there a chance that the SPL get overwritten before the error and I still get stuck?
Well, in fact, it is necessary...

...When I mean original ROM, I mean the ROM that could only work on a CID-Locked-by-a-carrier Excalibur, not the HTC WW ROM release.
Also, many of us noobs are international, I doubt that on the ROM database on this website we'll be able to find, say, the Movistar Mexico HTC Excalibur WM5 1.15.0000 ROM, which in my case, is the only one I would be able to flash in case anything goes wrong on the upgrade attempt. (I dedicated a week searching this ROM for the first Excalibur I bricked, no results)
Therefore - and I really hate to contradict -, for many of us, a ROM backup IS necessary and a tutorial from you experts on how to do it would be a great, great contribution to this community. (And also to the database, 'cause I'll definitively upload my ROM once I back it up)

Actually, it's quite easy to CID unlock your phone to load whatever ROM you want. Much easier in fact, than dumping your current ROM and restoring it. I was able to flash my first ROM within about 30 minutes of reading on this forum, and had no problems at all.

I completely agree with you
I just have no idea how to restore a backed-up ROM and I haven't read anything saying how to do it either. As you say, many of us a stuck with devices CID locked to some international ROM that is impossible to get.
So once again the question: Does anyone know how to re-flash a backed-up ROM?
I'm no expert but all I'm going to say is this. If you have a Rom from a different carrier that has not leaked to the public, then you are probably out of luck. You take the risk of hoping your phone will not have serious problems down the line of your contract or usage. You should pick up insurance on your phone depending on the stipulations your carrier has about lost or stolen or even broken phones. In that case you could return/replace your phone if need be after modifying it to your liking. I also would suggest that the entire reason we are here is that we don't want to be like the norm. We want what we paid for and don't want to be restricted. It's a risk. You must make that choice and succeed or fail that's not anyone's problem but your own. With all the Roms out there you should find one to your liking. If you brick your phone which seems so much more difficult than my razr modding days, than sell it for parts and lesson learned.
In the U.S. the Open Headset Alliance is our future so what we do to our phones in the future will be our choice.
Good Modding

C'mon guys...
Wy all the negativity?
I'm I conspiring against copyright laws if I want to have a backup of the ROM I paid for?
Is backing up a ROM frowned upon on this community? or is it so easy (from what I can gather it requires "dumping" and "restoring") that it is even insulting for me to ask you how to do it?
Yes, we are all here because we don't conform to the norm, but we are all HERE to help each other out. Why the closure? Why the elitism?
Like all of you, I want to take full advantage of the piece of technology I acquired without the restrictions installed on them by the phone corps. Yes, I would like to have the minimum risks while doing so, and yes, I would like to do it as cost effective as I can, just as anyone of you would.
It is a risk to upgrade a Cid.Locked phone with the bypass provided on this website, It happened to me and to many: USB cord unplugs and voila, bricked phone.
One alternative is to pay $40 bucks for a permanent Cid.Unlock, which will allow you to flash and flash and flash, even if you get stuck in the middle of one process.
The other, used by many here who wont pay, is to use the Cid bypass, while having a backup original rom "just in case".
What I only ask (for myself and my peer noobs) is to have this same other alternative as many, many of you.
Really, is it to hard to post the following?
1. Downoad these softwares;
2. Do this to "dump";
3. Do that to "restore";
4. To re-flash, do this.
C'mon, all for one and one for all right?
p.s. For my friend asking how to re-flash a backed up ROM, from what I've gathered, it goes something like this: your backed up ROM must be in a *.bn format (I still don't know how to even achieve this); then you must get a hold of any HTC RUU Software, extract it (Winrar) and replace the *.bn file inside the extracted folder with your *.bn file; with the HTC connected in bootloader mode, run the exe file in the extracted folder.

The Official ROMs collection is as full as I can make it. To have more images, we need everyone to upload ones that are missing to something like rapidshare, mediafire, or one of a few dozen other hosting sites, then tell up here on xda dev. Or upload it to several yourself. Spreading things on the net is much easier than ripping the ROM out anyway, and you benefit from the online backups, too.
So, yes, if you aren't going to back up your ROM, hope that someone else already has. Or, even better, be that first guy who does it, to make things easier for the rest of us. Besides, we might want to see what kinda goodies are tucked in the Movistar version
Indeed!

Thanks for the support Profezza, indeed I intend to be the first, but in order to do that, I need to know how to do it.
I'll keep my hopes up for someone to post here the procedure for backing up my own ROM.
Also, the Movistar version is pretty lame, at least it would be a language addition to the database since it is originally in Spanish.

I think the version # system is controlled by HTC and fairly consistent across brandings, so it looks like it is a rather old one, but yeah, it could handy just for the Spanish. And ya never know, maybe a better graphic or two in some odd corner. I'll come back and bump this if it looks like it is fading away.

Hi velascoperroni!
Thank you for your help - this is helping me to get closer to understanding
Basically I have my old ROM image as .img files (actually 5 of them) produced by bkondisk, together with a log file saying what goes where. So now all we need to figure out is how to turn these back into a .bn file and we'll be in business. For info on bkondisk, which lets you save your ROM (as .img files), see this wiki http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=bkondisk
Could anyone point me to some resources on these two file formats? Then maybe we could come up with a conversion program when one doesnt exist
Getting closer!
Great, it seems we are getting closer to our goal!!!
But still surprises me that no one has posted a complete how to... perhaps the only few who know the deal haven't read this thread yet.
Now we know the following:
1. Bkondisk: software that allows to backup ROM in *.img format.
2. The original format of the ROM is *.bn
We don't know if the *.img file needs to be converted to *.bn or if they are compatible.
I also found out about an easier method to re-flash the ROM:
1. Format your SD Card in FAT32;
2. Copy your *.bn file to your SD Card;
3. Turn off phone, insert SD Card, Turn on phone in bootloader mode;
4. The phone should automatically recognize the ROM and start the flashing process.
Uccelino: Try placing the *.img file in the SD Card instead of the *.bn file. Maybe, just maybe the phone also recognizes *img files!

I never got a feasible response to wether sprite backup would work or not, and I did not want to spend $30 bucks to find out.

I just had an idea: I will flash a ROM, back it up, and compare the *.bn files to the *.img files I get from backing up - maybe they are or are almost the same, and we can convert them
I will try. Thanks
Hi all
please dont flame the n00b. I have recently acquired my first smartphone the diamond and am very pleased with it. I have read through the threads and have developed my understanding of the considerations to make in flashing the ROM on my phone
I have an early version of the ROM as I received one of the first stock into the UK, which turned out to be grey imports from hong kong :S . I would like to realise some of the speed / battery / bugfix benefits of the newest ROM
however many of these threads are quite long , so i was wondering if someone could do me a favour by succintcly summarising the steps i would need :
my phone is runnning :
1.34.831.1 WWE - the unit is from hong kong i beleive, i have registered on HTC HK e-club
I would like to upgrage this is the latest signed UK ROM ?
If this is not possible can advice be given on going to the latest HK WWE ?
I understand this will involve changing the HARD SPL ?
Additionally can any method provided be confirmed as a reversible process should i need to invoke the warranty ?
thanks in advance for your help.
please let me know if you need any further information form me in order to help.
thanks
1: install hardspl (unsigned)
2: search the threads for the newer HK stock roms, they've been posted by tudispin I think.
3: flash
4: should need arise, you can revert to stock spl, search the threads for spls by htchackers.
you should be able to flash back for warranty purposes.. safest thing is still to dump your current ROM (search the forums and wiki for how-to), but i think you'll be alright. You can check out my site for step-by-step instructions on how to upgrade your ROM
thanks so far
just for help so far
your guide looks great racerx_
so i should be able to do the following tonight
1: install hardspl (unsigned)
2: search the threads for the newer UK? stock roms,
3: flash
4: and should the need arise, you can revert to stock spl, search the threads for spls by htchackers.
once the hardspl is loaded am i correct in thinking any ROM can be loaded ?
oh but
dump my current ROM before proceeding .. just in case

yeah you should technically be able to load any ROM... if signed Hard-SPL, then only any signed ROM of course
hit a slight problem
So i am tryiong to HARD SPL. have gone through all the instructions but :
when installint the HARD SPL . the phone screen switches off the progress bar on PC sits at )% for about 20 sec it then accelerates to 100% very quickly within around 2 mins. It say that is is installed correctly
however the phone restarts and i can still see the d: as 1.34.00.00
so the loinex 1.3 has not installed
the windows is hard reset as i then have to go through the screen calibration
any help appreciated
HardSPL is not the ROM, just software to enable the update
once you installed HardSPL you should now be able to install a ROM
hi
yes sorry for the confusion in my past previous description. It is the HARD SPL software update which says that it is installed but isnt
i have not attempted to load another ROM until this is done first
any further advice ?
in essence when installing the olinex 1.30 i get no errors
bit it doesnt install and all i get is a hard reset ?
If it goes through OK, it has installed You don't see anything different in the splash screen- that just lists the basics
To confirm, go into Bootloader mode by holding down the Volume Down Key and at the same time pressing the red reset button at the mouth of the stylus silo. It can take a few goes, but will show a rainbow screen listing the SPL etc, which ought to say 1.30 Olinex, confirming the correct SPL flash.
Once confirmed press the reset button to restart.
ok thanks for step by step advice there
the HARD SPL is loaded version 1.30 I will try a new ROM now
i am trying the :
RUU_Diamond_hTC_Asia_WWE_1.37.707.1_Radio_Signed_Diamond_52.26a.25.09_1.00.25.03_Ship
which is signed so should work
mmm even though the phone is synced up I get error
"262" when i try to install new ROM
it basically stalls on 0% for about 4 to 5 mins before it aborts with this error message.
i have searched the forums but cannot see a succinct plausible answer
hmm.. i thought that error was usually encountered with unsigned ROMs...
1) are you flashing with xp or vista
2) are you connected through a USB hub?
3) what EXACTLY are your steps for flashing this ROM
hi there
yeas flashing through vista 64 bit
and not using USB hub but direct connection
I downloaded the signed 1.37.401.3 Europe ROM linked from this forum and this installed fine
the improvement over the old ROM is immense. so far i am delighted by the results.
I am still perplexed as to why the asian ROM did not install still :S
only difference so far is that this EUROP ROM does not have the remote desktop app
thanks for all your help. I am going to test this ROM over the coming week, but unless there is a compelling reason to another ROM i will stick with this
Why HARDSPL when flashing HTC rom?
When using the newer 1.37 roms, you download the installer from e-club, make activesync conn en go for it?
A noob's point of view
I got my Diamond about two weeks ago, and since I'm new to PDAs and WM, I've done a lot of reading on the forums, wiki etc. At first things were quite murky for me and I know what my fellow noob here is feeling. So I thought I should share my experience (or lack there of) for the use of other noobs.
What I Know
HardSPL is needed in order to flash a cooked (non original HTC) ROM. As I understand, it is the equivalent of BIOS for PCs, mixed with a bootloader flavor. You need to first change this section of software first in order for the cooked roms to be accepted.
HardSPL comes in two flavours:
- the developer edition with which you can flash any type of roms (signed, unsigned, original) link: HardSPL dev ed
- the signed edition with which you can flash signed roms (original HTC, and cooked signed). The signed ROM versions give an added sense of reliability since they are tested. link: HardSPL signed the topic name was confusing for me at first
A list of signed ROMs: here
There are more than one "cooks" out there working in teams or otherwise. And more than one ROM you can flash. I did a lot of reading before I chose the one to use, I find user feedback the best measuring tool for quality .
Now for the flashing part
After you downloaded the HardSPL and the chosen ROM, you need to install ActiveSync. This is found on the CDs that come with the device, or downloadable fromo the M$ ****e aaaa site ActiveSync is a tool used for transferring contacts, e-mails and other outlook stuff if you use it, files, AND is needed for the flashing process. When installing, if you do not use outlook and do not like "syncronisation folders" on your desktop uncheck every "folder" option, you will be better off.
This site was very useful to me since it gave a detailed description flashing with visual documentation which (a bit uncomfortable to admit) was very helpful for me.
The HardSPL flash takes little time to complete and unless going into bootloader mode (vol down + soft reset) is completely transparent to the user.
The ROM flash takes longer 10 mins - they go by pretty slowly .
For safety reasons, I also downloaded an original HTC ROM just in case.
Because the flashing process once started SHOULD NOT be stopped there are a few things to consider:
- charge the battery
- firmly and directly (no hubs) plug the USB cable into computer and device.
- if you live in an area where power cuts are often consider doing the flashing on an UPS-enabled computer.
When the flashing finishes, the device will reboot and you will have to set-up again. If using TLRs ROM do not panic if you have to align the screen 6 times or so as I did. You will eventually get to the next step
What I don't know or am not sure of:
- when using signed HardSPL can I load an original HTC signed ROM? if so, is this enough in case of RMA issues?
- when reflashing with a newer/different ROM can I restore a back-up made with the previous ROM? I'm using sprite and I backed up everything, including what registry stuff it offered to. In this case, do i need to reapply the registry tweaks? dunno if sprite backs-up all the registry or just some of it.
Im must thank guys for this thread, i am minutes from going to the postal office to get my Diamond and this weekend has been full of information reading and program downloading, but the only thing i was a bit hung up on was this flashig buisness. Of course i know a lot about flashing ( Right about everything there is to flash ) but almost nothing about Phone Flashing
But i think i will try the version i get now first to see if i feel the need to update to anything else...
Hence my question is rather simple... How tha fack do i see what version i already have? >_< is it that (vol down + soft reset) thing? or am i way out of place?
thx.

No, that is for HardSPL info. To see the ROM version, go to settings - device info and you'll see both ROM and radio.

any help would be nice, by the way i am on windows vist a, but i have also tryed it on xp, but the same still happns.
Thanks

anyone? noow any suggestions
This answer may seem condescending, but it isn't.
1. Are you attemtping to flash a rom update from the phone's original carrier or a non carrier specific rom? If a non carrier specific rom then see #2. If carrier specific did you download the rom from a secure place such as the carrier's website? If not, you may want to and try again.
2. Have you made sure your phone is CID and sim unlocked? This has to happen if you are attempting to flash a non carrier specific rom onto your phone. There is literature in your specific phone's Mobile 6 forum that is stickied or in the Wiki which will show you the best way to accomplish flashing. You must first read, then use the correct methods and tools or you will most likely create a brick. At this point of the game your phone is a little older and the path to Mobile 6 is well laid out. Which leads to the next question.
3. Have you done a search for this problem? You are not the first and will not be the last to have run into this issue. Using the search button does wonders here. If you have the cajones to flash your phone you are adventerous and the knowledge you will pick up will help in the long run. I say this because flashing is addictive and once you see the immediate improvements you will continue to look for better roms.
4. Please remember this is a developer's forum so the intelligence level is higher than most other forums but the patience level is much lower for those not willing to follow directions and/or help themselves. Some things have well laid out paths and others are trial and error. A lot of people here are doing a large amount of work for little to no money so please READ before embarking on your journey.
5. Get to work. Oh yeah. Please lit your phone's information in your signature. It will save someone asking the first 2 or 3 questions I did everytime. You could use mine as an example. Believe me it saves time and people are more willing to help.
hey thanks for your message
I am trying to flash the phone with Official O2 UK WM6 Trion (Hermes) rom 3.54.206.1_6275+radio 1.47 (3-8-2007) , the phone is simfree.
but even on trying to install Olipro v7 2.10 i get messages like 266 or 260 conection timed out or something. i am technical minded and i have tryed to serch for the awsers using google.
I suggest reading the Wiki and your Mobile 6 forums for the way to flash without using the usb cord. It will take a non-sdhc memory card and uses the nbh file from the rom you are flashing. Research that.
What is the HTC name for your phone? The Trion is a Hermes or a Wizard correct?
Also, CID and sim unlocking your phone will eliminate many future problems. Just be aware it automatically voids your warranty.
Okay - can you do a soft reset and have the phone work fine? That is step one. If so, then go to the Hermes Mobile 6 forum and check out the stickies. Dr. Puttingham wrote a great guide to flashing our phones.
If you can't get the phone working from the soft reset I suggest reading the Wiki and the Mobile 6 forums for the way to flash without using the usb cord. It will take a non-sdhc memory card and uses the nbh file from the rom you are flashing. Research that.
The Trion is a Hermes, which is what I have (Cingular 8525). I would suggest a non carrier rom of Mobile 6.1. You will find it to be much faster and stable.
Also, CID and sim unlocking your phone will eliminate many future problems. Just be aware it automatically voids your warranty.
hi i just found out that thephone is not a trion afterall it is a xda mini s, can this still be upgraded
I believe the Mini S is a Wizard. check out the forums. All the answers are there. I retired my Wizard 3 months ago . This is an easy problem to fix. Just read. I still suggest Mobile 6.1. Especially on the Wizard.

lol if you're a smart kid you wouldve flashed to a custom rom with m2D on it.
Jk. I've had that problem before where i couldnt add programs to the "launcher page" of manilla as well as having issues adding favorite people to the peoples tab.
I would try 1 of 2 things.
1) try a different version of manilla 2d for example if you used version 21 try version 20.
2) BUT i would highly reccommend using a custom rom with manilla 2d. Why? first off we have great chefs (people on this forum who make great roms). They optimize the rom (or basically the operating system for your phone to run more efficiently --> FASTER)
I would suggest NFSFAN who makes vogue roms. He also added other mods that are featured in the touch pro and touch diamond. Cant go into detail here but if you need help flashing to a custom rom you can pm me

1) You should upgrade your radio --> maybe 3.42.30
honestly the easiest way is to use this utility from htc. This upgrades your htc touch to the newer windows mobile 6.1 with GPS enabled and Rev A for faster data downloads. http://www.htc.com/us/supportdownloadlist.aspx?p_id=76&act=sd&cat=all By doing this it will upgrade your radio. But note: this is not the only way to upgrade radio its the simplest way for newbies 2) You need to unlock your phone
This is the Unlockerhttp://rapidshare.com/files/113951076/Vogue_unlocker_MFG_2.31.exeIf you need instructions here is where i got it. Just read we all had to read to figure it out. http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=203703) After doing that you can finally install a custom rom.
I suggest this one. Here is a very good and stable WM 6.1 Rom with Manilla 2D aka Touchflo 2D incorporated in this rom/os made by NFSFAN: http://74.53.45.2/%7Eevadmin/nfsfan/Public%20Releases/Sprint/NFSFAN%27s%201.12%20Sprint%20ROM.rarThere are 2 ways of flashing your phone...actually any windows mobile phone for that matter. 1) Flashing by your micro SD card or 2) flashing through your computer via USB cord
Flashing Through microSD card
I Personally Like this method because it works 100%. The usb method sometimes has errors with active sync connection. Basically you download the rom (provided above) and thers a file called RUU_signed.nbh For the Sd card method you have to copy that to the root of your microSD card and rename it to VOGUIMG.nbh. Please note that you shouldve unlocked your phone by now and you shouldve backed up everything from you fone/sd card to your pc because everything will be deleted. Now after the VOGUIMG.nbh is on the root of the SD card, you now press and hold the power button on your phone AND press and hold the camera button on your phone at the same time --> keep holding it and then insert your stylus into the reset button. KEEP holding it until you get a 3 color screen red blue green. ANd follow the onscreen instructions.
Flashing via USB cord
If you flash by this method, with the rom provided above, NFSFAN has provided u with a .rar of all the stuff you need to flash. Just unzip/unrar it. In there theres a file called ROMUpdateUtility.exe. open that. Make sure you plug in your phone and have an active sync connection. that program u just opened has onscreen instructions. DO NOT REMOVE YOUR PHONE FROM THE USB CORD AND HOPE YOU DONT HAVE A POWER OUTAGE WHILE DOING THIS BY USB CORD. This method is the easiest way to flash...but easy to me is subjective and it may not be easy for all.
Anyways after its done whether u flashed by sd card or usb cord...it takes a while to start up dont panic. YOu shuold see that screen where u have to align your screen... after that ur phone will perform a customization let that **** run do not cancel.
intimidatorx31 thanks for the amazing guide! If anything, it should be stickied at the top to help all newcomers here. Well done.

By CLARO, are you referring to CLARO SAC, as in CLARO is your cellular carrier/provider?
If CLARO is an app its not one Ive ever heard of for unlocking HTC Vogues and a google search comes up with it being a cellular provider NOT an unlocking software to flash custom ROMs to your phone and the only thing I find close to unlocking a phone and CLARO isnt even for the HTC Vogue but rather a V220.

LOL true.
Claro runs all the CDMAs in this country, and Viva is another competitor,
btw i mean claro by this http://claro.com.do/
and they unlocked my phone and even had their custom Rom which, apart from being slow had a hideous theme
and i've never unlocked a phone by myself
what is the purpous of unlocking?

Unlocking the phone is what allows users to flash a custom ROM onto them other than the locked, standard ROM from the Carrier we buy them from.
So your saying the carrier CLARO has unlocked the phone? can you verify this to be certain, if not check with them regarding flashing of a custom ROM and check out THIS for more information regarding unlocking and relocking your phone for custom ROMs
As far as you being a "foriegn" (at least to me as Im in the US and my experience and understanding of ROMs and Unlocking comes from use on US phones) you may want to double-check your phones state before going to far
