EVO CDMA bands? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

A friend wants this phone but he's on Telus in Canada. Telus has CDMA and is also 3G+. I understand the EVO is CDMA so I am wondering:
a) Will the phone work on Telus under the CDMA network 850/1900.
b) If so do we need to do something TO the EVO in order for this to work (such as some form of unlocking)
Any help is very appreciated!

Telus is GSM, so no. Their CDMA is not compatible with the EVO (different signal characteristics and different frequency).

This wrong information. I hope the original thread owner didn't take the response.
HTC Evo CAN work on Telus!

HTC Evo working in Canada
I got an Evo in December and just moved to Canada for a job (Vancouver). I love this phone and want to get it working here with Telus. From what I've read, it looks like there is a way to get the EVO working here, but I can't find any specifics. Any tips?

[Q] headed back to the U.S.

So...I am headed back to the U.S. permanently and wondering if there is a way to flash the radio to make it work on the U.S. 3G networks of either ATT or T-Mobile.... if not, no biggy...ill sell it and by a new one back home.
Thanks for any info you can give.
As far as I am aware mate as long as the desire has the capability of connecting to USA Phone Bands then it should just be a case of flashing the international ROM

That's the point - an A8181 doesn't support the 3G bands for any US GSM network. You would need an A8183 which at least works on AT&T, or a Nexus One on T-Mobile. If CDMA is your bag, your HTC choices are essentially the Evo on Sprint, or the Incredible on Verizon.

Dave
guess you will be selling your desire then

[Q] HTC evo 4G for GSM network world wide

hi friend,
Did you know that HTC Evo 4G working with GSM world wide or not ?
How to unlock it ?
James
The evo does not have a gsm antenna, so no it will not work on any gsm network.
It's not a matter of "unlocking" it, but rather a simple hardware limitation. CDMA and GSM operate on different radio frequencies, and therefore require different hardware.

The HTC Desire HD is the GSM equivalent of the Evo. Samsung also has the Galaxy S series of phones which are somewhat comparable.
I seen people making it pocket and recently people making it boost mobile and everything is working fine i was surprise i wonder how they did it
Boost mobile is a CDMA network which is the same frequencies that Sprint uses. Boost is also owned by Sprint so that may be why you are seeing that. In the U.S. CDMA Networks are U.S. Cellular, Sprint, Boost, Verizon, Cricket. But many of those use different frequencies and all CDMA devices do not use SIM Cards (GSM) unless theyare Quad-Band World Phones which the EVO 4G is not.
Sorry

[q] evo rom for at&t

OK i hope this hasn't been talked about already, I couldn't find it. If i understand correctly...the EVO is a world model phone and is capable of both CDMA as well as GSM. I could be wrong...I have an ATT plan and Im sick of Sprint service however i love my evo. has anyone successfully made a GSM rom for these phones? if so where do i find it or would someone be willing to give it a shot? I might need to "repair' my ESN too. any input other than "I'm a dumb a$$ for thinking of it" would be appreciated thanks.
Impossible to get the Sprint HTC Evo onto the AT&T network. AT&T uses SIM cards, which the Evo does not have.
The evo is not a world phone, it's purely CDMA & WiMax. AT&T uses GSM for voice, which is the world standard. AT&T currently uses some variant of HSPA for data, I believe.
What that boils down to is that no, you can't put an evo on AT&T. The only other major compatible network is Verizon, which also uses CDMA. However, Sprint is the only carrier that uses WiMax for 4G, so you'd be out of luck there.
There's also the thorny issue of CDMA carriers not allowing equipment from competitors activate on their accounts. Some smaller carriers will take devices from other carriers, but I don't really know much about them.

[Q] Verizon Nexus run on GSM network?

I'm getting ready to deploy, and I was curious if you can convert the Verizon Nexus to run on GSM/international networks. If yes, how?
sorry
there is no way my friend. i just got back from deployment. I was in the same boat as you. sell that g nex my friend, and get the gsm one. i found one by going on ebay, searching for guys selling one close to me and off to buy it locally so you're not waiting on shipping. or put on craigslists for a trade for the gsm version, u never know.
Yep, what he said was right - you can't convert it over. The Verizon one has a CDMA antenna and all the other networks require the GSM antenna (why couldn't they have both!! probably for this reason..). And even if the other networks used CDMA, they have to specifically accept your phone into their network (some kind of CDMA authentication thing, whereas GSM accepts everything it can talk to).
So flashing a GSM baseband to the CMDA phone will not work?
NO! Do not flash a GSM baseband on your nexus. The VZW nexus doesn't have any of the GSM radios or frequencies and wont work.
Unfortunately the GN only comes with either GSM or CMDA/LTE. It may be worth looking into getting a global phone that supports both CDMA and GSM.
