Hey,
When i first got my desire, one of the first things i did to it was root it and install the blank generic HTC rom (to get rid of all the crap my service provider had put on it). However, as its rooted i cant install the OTA update over the air. So ive downloaded the latest one from this forum but how to i install just the update exactly? Actually, i think i just downloaded the non root OTA update, is there a rooted 1.21... update somewhere?
Also, when i initially put the new rom on my phone, i didnt put app2sd on there as i heard about all these phones being bricked and didnt want to lose my nice new shiny desire, but ive heard this problem is now solved. How do i go about installing it now? Do i have to reflash everything or can i just install it over the top as if its an app itself somehow?
so to summarise:
1. how to install OTA manually
2. How to install App2sd
Thanks for you help

I have a Dutch HTC Desire, English language.
When I check for an update I get the message there is one available.
I see the download was completed and it restarts my Desire.
I see a screen with a phone and arrow, followed by a phone with a question mark.
Then the phone restarts and I have the 'old' version.
Is it that I have a rooted version?
What do I have to do to get FroYo? I downloaded PB99IMG_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.21.405.2_Radio_32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.02_2_release_12984_signed.zip.
When 'Flash zip from sdcard' it also gave an error:
(bad)
Installation aborted.
Anyone a suggestion?

Yeah, root is probably the problem.
It's not FroYo though, it's just a bunch of minor changes and bugfixes. Also, it's not that new, it's been out unoffically for a couple of weeks. A lot of the custom roms on here and on modaco are based on the same 1.21 rom and will allow you to keep root and apps2sd. So you could flash to one of those, maybe?
I don't think this is the Froyo update. Apparently it's just an HTC update of some kind that doesn't make much of a change. Just keep trying, but in the mean time don't stress too much, you're not missing out on anything.
o really? so i cant install the OTA updates if i have root? that really sux and if i had known that when i flashed i wouldnt have done it.
i might reflash to this version as i want it for the facebook contacts bug fix. i dont have apps2sd as as far as im aware thats regulary bricking phones, that still the case?
Couldn't say. The Desire root was so half-assed and seemed to cause so many issues that I just didn't bother doing it, so I'm just going by what I've read
ok, well is it possible to do an update without having to flash and therefore resetup and backup all my settings etc? i.e. in the same way the OTA update would do it without resetting the device

The usb brick issue now has a fix available, and it wasn't due to a2sd!
really, thats excellent, u have a link?
Yep.

The recovery method was causing the problems. It still does, but they can now be fixed. people are working on the recovery and booting from SD card etc.
Edit: If you fancy trying out froyo on the desire you can flash a test rom from the dev forums. It's not for everyone yet as it's not totally working, but I'm using a froyo rom and find it's pretty decent for a hacked version!

A rather strange point of view!
Most rooted users wouldn't want to install an OTA because they would then lose root. On other phones (e.g. G1, Magic etc) most rooted ROMs have the OTA mechanism disabled.
The normal course of action for rooted users is to wait for someone to repack the update as a rooted update.zip.

I have a rooted HTC evo I still haven't gotten the update do I have to unroot to be able to download 2.2(froyo). I just want the update what do I have to do?
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=A9AI5RM9
Thats the RUU, apply this update and you'll be completely stock 2.2
what do you mean apply I've downloaded this before I can't find the file to download and when I try to open it it says it doesn't have a program to open.
If you are rooted Most Roms will not allow an OTA to come through.
you have options the option listed above will unroot you and install 2.2.
the other option is to go to the dev forum and download a 2.2 custom rom or the rooted 2.2 stock rom. flash those and you are good to go.
I will remind that currently there is no way to root 2.2 so if you choose to go through the RUU and go to stock rom that way you will NOT be able to root at this time. It could also be WEEKS before a root method is found. I dont know why anyone would want to or would suggest doing this unless you plan to take it in to sprint for repair.
How do I apply the first file?

No you do not need to unroot. If you accept that ota update it will take away your root because the rom it puts in isn't rooted. I happened to download and try out froyo 2.2 like 3 days ago to see how it functions. It works very well however the update killed my hotspot completely. I ended up restoring back from Froyo 2.2. I will give a link that will take you to the downloads to do it where the rom comes rooted, and the radio and wimax drivers are there as well. Here it is.... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=740520 One thing to remember is this is not the absolute final build that is pushed out on the OTA update that they have done today. So my guess is very very soon if not already there will be a posted and rooted version of the final build. I am unsure and I am almost positive nothing is every final, but I don't know if you will be able to re-root your evo if you just accept the update from Sprint. If you no longer want a rooted phone and all you care about is getting the update, then you can or will have gotten the request today from sprint as I did or you can look for the update manually in system updates, from settings at the home page. Hope that helps and take care.

I strongly suggest you do not just get stock 2.2 because you have no idea if you will ever root again. Unless your taking it into sprint it makes no sense. I really do not want to attempt to get you that file because its a massive mistake. The download does work though i already tried it that much i can say. See if someone else will actually tell you what you need to do because i'm not sure i can bring myself to do it sorry. I am slightly unsure how you ended up rooting your phone if you are having trouble with a download that has an executable file as in you click on it and it runs If you however need help downloading or flashing or whatever the other stuff that i linked that i will definately try to assist you with. If you flash a stock rom you can and will get the message to update the system and you can manually look for it too. The roms have that disabled so people can't due to ignorance, apply the update then say, "Oh crap I am not rooted how do I fix it?", which we will see a lot of today.
OK, here is what I did so far:
1. unboxed a brand new G2 (no cell service set up yet)
2. applied manual OTA (the one from November 2010 - version 1.22.531.8)
3. followed the wiki and applied new hboot, rooted via gfree07, S-OFF, etc. using adb
was enjoying new rooted phone, everything working nice, have no T-mobile service yet, so decided to connect via wifi and surf around a bit
suddenly I realized that this phone has fully auto-downloaded and is ready to install OTA update Gingerbread 2.3.4
Yikes, it hasn't done the install yet, so everything is cool for the moment, but I am afraid to reboot or turn off phone, because I am afraid it will auto-install the downloaded OTA and I will be screwed!
how can I erase this downloaded OTA without a reboot or am I worried about nothing?
PS - the only backups of any kind I have are backups of partitions 7,18,21
PPS: beer is the reason I forgot to turn off the auto updating - lol

The update won't apply unless you tell it to apply; where it downloads to is beyond me though. Even if the update does get applied however, you can still downgrade and re-root.

I think this did the trick, I had a brainfreeze earlier, but this should get rid of that bad-boy

Couldn't you try making a Nandroid backup just to be sure ? I do suspect you have ClockworkMod installed, since you are rooted.

A nandroid backup will be no help as if you flash the OTA update it will return your phone to S-ON and you will lose root.
Im currently running on 4.0.4 and its also rooted well somehow i got the no sim card error and wont go away. And i heard that if u update it to the latest that itl be fixes. But if i update it then i lose my root access and i havent seen any root for the latest update. any help?
