I've got a quick question I need answering - someone here maybe able to do it, or if not then direct me to a busy iPhone forum where I'm likely to get a quick response?
I want to send some mp3s to a friend who has an iPhone, but don't want her to have the hassle of transferring from computer to phone.
As far as I'm aware iPhones can't download and save files from the web, right? So uploading them to file-sharing service is out. Is there some sort of streaming service, or anything really that I can use for her to listen to these mp3s?
Thanks in advance, and apologies to the mods for a blatant non-Desire related post! It is related in a way, cos I'll be sending/uploading the mp3s from my Desire - absolutely LOVE this phone, it can do anything!
Unless she's Jailbroken her phone, This isn't possible. If she has, Then she should consult a Jailbreak speciality forum for how to...

Also, Just by wording the title something like 'Sending music from my desire to an iPhone' would make this seem a lot more on-topic.

Thanks, I've just checked out your suggestion, but it states:
"What kind of data can be shared?
We try to enable as much data types as possible. The iPhone SDK allowes us to only share contacts, text, bookmarks and images. Android is much more open and we can utilize other applications as data providers. With Android you can throw and catch contacts, text, bookmarks, images and as of lately music. We will add other types like .pdf and .zip soon. "
So it would work Android to Android, but not to iPhone. It's such a shame that Apple holds back stuff that everyone else can do. Ultimately it's the iPhone user that loses out...
What about bluetooth? Can an iPhone receive mp3 files that way?
Nope.

Oh well, you never know - King Jobs might see fit to allow this simple functionality in a future iPhone OS update. Til then, my friend will have to go through the "adding to iTunes library and syncing to phone" bullsh*t!
The sad thing is, most iPhone owners don't know any better - as far as they're concerned, the only way to get anything on any phone is via the magical iTunes. It would be funny, if it wasn't so tragic.

First of all, I believe the phone manufacturers still pay a fee to Google for the GApps.
Secondly, it's all about profit margins - Android is attractive to companies like HTC because they likely make more money per unit than they would if they use WP7.

I actually really like the cloud based services, and there was once a time I hated them. The convenience is just so remarkable that I don't think anything else can come close. I remember a time when I thought the bluetooth sync was the greatest thing that happened to my WinMo device because it took me away from a USB cable... Then I was given an exchange access and my life changed forever lol... I don't think I ever want direct sync again... The cloud has become my home.

Again, most of you fail to realize that implementing HTML5 and Silverlight are Microsoft projects. Flash on the other hand is an Adobe project, one they would need to code and supply for the OS. As much as I'd like to have it, it isn't a deal breaker to be completely honest, and I hope that HTML5 has caught on a lot more by then... I already read somewhere that Flash 10.2 is coming to our phones 'soon.'
Yeah I think within a year of its initial crippled released WP7 will shape to be a very good mobile os. The signs are good so far but all MS needs to do is relate and communite with their user base better.
Well yes, Microsoft did bought skype (read it HERE ) and that means Windows 7 and WP7 get special treatment =)
"It is assumed that the main motive of Microsoft (Ballmer) to buy Skype just for Windows phone 7 Phone Nokia in cooperation with the integration of VOIP services in the system as a competitive option Voice Google and Apple Facetime."
well, 8.705 billion $ is a lot of money for something like skype
It is a lot of money, however you have to assume that it is a fairly profitable company that should pay for itself and in addition bring features to the WP7 platform

anyway the Windows live will be intigreted in the peoples hub in WP7.5 n and if Skype will be as well then i think it will be great for us as users..

I can't "explain" it, and nobody seems to be able to make total sense of this acquisition. While individual pieces may be reasonable, the price tag is just outrageous.
I mean, VoIP may be useful, Skype together with WLM will be one big IM network, but there just isn't so much money as to justify the price.
If Google got Skype that would probably be bad for MS's "cloud" push, Google is already to big in online. But still, 8.5bn? In cash? Jesus...

LOL....no lie. Know what makes sense of this deal? Ballmer. Period. Wild hair, woke up on the wrong side of the bed, paranoia that Google is actually a single person who replaces all his furniture with exact replicas while he sleeps...who the hell knows why Ballmer does some of the retarded stuff he does. But it only makes sense when you consider it not as a Microsoft deal but as a Ballmer deal. I'll be interested in seeing how quickly Microsoft turns Skype into the Visual FoxPro of VOIP. Visual what? Yeah, exactly.

Really there's nothing to talk about until Mango and the new devices that will bring. Everything has been said already, the same arguments have exploded again and again. It's just a waiting game now.
I used to be more active in the Captivate section ... But it was because there was always the hope that something would come out that would fix the lag, GPS etc. Fortunately with my Focus, everything just works. It's kinda nice haha.
Yep. Patiently waiting for Mango.
Nice to not be alone being satisfied with WP7. I am only waiting for my carrier contract to end so i can switch and let the call issuess drop. I love my Omnia 7, i really do, its the best phone i have to date (Used HD2 and was happy then). But the Edge problem with Samsung Phones in generall is a annoyence.

I wholeheartedly agree WP7 does almost everything I need my smartphone to do but it will not play audio books. I have them on my phone but I cannot save my spot. It treats an audio book like a mp3. I tried treating it as a podcast but Zune then fails to see it. I am stuck using my damn Nano.
This is a big missing item for me. Combine that with the lack of vendor support and I am getting frustrated. No audible application. No HBOGo application. No LogMeIn ignition. I even boycotted audible and told them they lost a customer of over 5 years until they step up and get my my WP7 app. No luck so far...
It seems WP7 is still not considered a player and that is very frustrating because overall this phone rocks!

Yes, the naysayers, doom sayers "it's not my old WM6.5 whiners" and "WP7 is a fail" sayers are gone. I really miss the latter, they were comic abusers of the English language. I challenged all of them to return after Mango and apologize for wasting space here and wasting our time with their frustrated, comical rants. They are gone because the news is universally good relative to WP7. Aquisitions, alliances, features etc. have all been good and in fact, much better than any of us had dreamed. You may want to look at Overdrive. It's Audio books from your library. I just installed it yesterday and looking for my library card to check out my first Audio book.
Thanks Guys.
Unfortunately Audiobookmark and Overdrive both only support mp3 formats.
Although I am glad to see Overdrive is now available - it is still not really useful until they implement WMA support. Almost all the audiobooks I checked out and are interested in are in WMA format, aaaaaaargh.
I did find a very kludgey workaround. I load the book onto my iPod. I then pull it off using iDump which gets it on my computer in a m4b format. I change the file tag genre to "Podcast" and then add it into Zune.
That finally gave me the ability to listen to my audiobooks as podcasts which allows me to use bookmarks in an audiobook checked out from Overdrive. A bit of work. Not sure if it is worth it to not use my old iPod.
Its quiet because there is literally nothing going on with WP7 right now. Nothing.
Until mango. When it gets here, there will be a burst of threads and new arguments.

Well currently there is absolutely nothing to talk about isn't it? It's still the same crippled OS with no Marketplace for most countries, no native letters and proper maps for most either, until Mango comes this fall - easily 4 months away. Plus not even one more new phone since launch. No customizations either. So what to talk about?
The user base here is pretty much limited to people who just "patiently wait" for upgrade. Those who didn't want to compromise their usage already switched to something else.
I am really curious what will be WP7 situation after Mango with unstoppable wave of Android and new iPhone. Really really curious how Nokia/WP7 will appear because honestly all other OEMs didn't REALLY meet my expectations.
So summing this up: exiting times ARE ABOUT to come, so it's hard to repeat endlessly future plans here.

One new phone then (HTC 7 Pro) the others being existing phones ported to new carriers. He's right about the rest.
We just spoke to Google, which confirmed that the Galaxy Nexus is no longer on sale right now, but Google says the device will begin shipping again next week. The company wouldn't get into specifics about why sales stopped, or whether new devices will include a patch that works around the court's preliminary ban, but they will indeed have the new Android 4.1 update.

Im sure Google appreciates the publicity and boost in sales. Apple failed.
So new GNex will ship with JB. I wonder if tgis means we will be getting JB source soon.
This does go to show exactly how stupid and outdated our patent laws are that they allow for things like this. Google has had universal search as part of Android for quite some time and now all of a sudden it's an issue???

The issue isn't voice search, it's universal search allowing the phone to search for applications, contacts, and media already on the phone as well as the internet and alternative sources (wikipedia, wolfram alpha...) when searching (speaking or typing into the search bar). Apple first debut it in iOS 3 I believe. I don't know when Android started doing it but it was around the same time.
Iirc, didn't some Nokia smart phones have 'universal' search. You just started typing what you were looking for and it would spit back things you had on phone. I think you could enable it to search web too.
butter and jelly please...
I can only hope Google decides they can live without the revenue they get (yes, I have heard they get more from iPhones than from Android phones... dunno how THAT works but anyway...) from iPhones and pull all Google services from iOS.
It sounds very much like Google Desktop to me. It searches a ton of things on my computer and it searches the web as well.
Seriously though, do other industries have these issues and we just never hear about them? Cars tend to all look and feel very similar. How do they deal with it? What about TVs? They are all rectangles with screens. Most cameras work very similarly. There is a ton of products that we use daily that work very much the same all the time, so how come I never hear about them having these issues?

Never happen. all Android is to Google is an added revenue stream for their ad business. If Android fails they'll just go full on Apple. Selling ads on Google is what Google cares about.
I personally don't think Google will do anything because they want their services to continue running on iPhones. Apple can simple start putting in Bing apps and then Google would lose millions of dollars... my 2 cents why Google doesn't do anything....
