New Desire + iPhone Sim Card o2 Contract - Desire General

I've just upgraded my iPhone 3G contract to a Desire and all they did was swap the sim straight over and change it on the computer in the o2 shop, in the past two weeks i've had the desire i've found the internet to be painfully slow and the amount of dropped phone calls terrible in areas where the iPhone had no problems! Should I go into o2 and have a word and could it have anything to do with the sim card being originally for an iPhone?
Thanks in advice for any help!

Well certainly isnt sim card problem, have you gone through all the settings to make sure 3g is switched on.I am waiting for my Desire to arrive as they
are sold out but I now have to pay extra £5 amonth to get 3g it no longer comes free with a £35 contract. So maybe you didnt upgrade your contract let us no the out come.

I had this problem on the iPhone, HD2 and the Desire. It IS O2!

Well I have Hd2 at the moment but waiting for Desire (probably wednesday according to o2)which do you prefer of these two phones.Im all iphoned out not even 4g interests me now.

Well im on o2, and have a contract iphone sim in it that hasn't been altered in any way (waiting for the phone call from o2! Or extra large data bill!) But anyway, I have no speed issues. Quicker than my 3gs! People knock o2 but its good for m me where I live and work.

iPhone PAYG Sim Setting For Desire

Good Morning, long time member who used to have the original XDA, went away but am now back
Picked up a Desire yesterday SIM free after selling my iPhone (good decision)
I have an iPhone PAYG sim where you top up £10 only once and get free internet access
for a whole year
I have 6 months left to run on this and was wondering if I could use this sim card
in my Desire
Is it just the APN settings I need to get right
Thanks in advance
i did the same thing and put my iphone pay and go sim in my desire . the apn etc should all be the same payandgo.02.co.uk??? if i remember rightly. i had to alter it to get it going . but make sure you inform o2 as i promptly lost 20 quid when i used up my data .... there is a lag as it changes from iphone to o2. best to arrange it first before you put in the sim .so far my usage has been ok as its not strictly unlimited internet like on iphone. i recommend you install 3g watchdog to keep an eye on data
wont o2 figure out that the sim isnt in an iphone? how do you get around that?
you dont, it lets you use wifi and internet for month then switches you to tariff with free internet but not wifi. thats why you have to let them know otherwise during changeover you lose all your credit on data !!

This is the coolest part to me! You long precede me as an XDA-devs member -- and so i salute for for having the original XDA... Just because I like story-telling, were you active here until iphone came out, then left, or did you leave before you got your iphone?
And how do you like the Desire's capacitive screen "feel" and lightness of touch compared to your iphone? sorry to be off-topic... just curious, and cheers, welcome back!

I left way before the iPhone came out, in fact I still have an XDA 2i at home somewhere. My work provided me with a Blackberry so I moved to using they devices until I got the Desire last week. I haven't had time to have a proper play but I love the Desire just the 'Live' wallpapers get me excited.
I look forward to to spending alot more time on here from now on

Can you PM or post the settings you have as mine still fails to connect and o2 say they
can't help me because they don't support the phone yet!!!
Cheers mate

Just ordered Desire £25pm!

Jumping ship from a WM Touch pro2, thought I was happy with it until my daughter got a Hero, so much smoother, and just works! Can't wait to get the phone now.
I think I got a great deal, from Virgin mobile (so using t-mobile) 600minutes, u/l texts and internet (FUP 1GB) 24 month contract £25 but also £50 cashback via quidco, so net cost under £23pm with free phone, only £3 pm more than my current sim only deal!
Great stuff, cant seem to find it on vm website, had mine a week now after the diamond for 2yrs running xdandroid last few months (android on diamond) all i can say is enjoy. You can get sprite migrate in the meanwhile to copy ur data for backup and transfr to ur new baby.
Rgs
I think at the moment the desire is only for existing customers online, so you will need to enter your account number to access it.
i also have the Desire from Virgin, Love the phone, love the Deal Hate the network, but it was only option i had.
But Love it sooooo much, and i love the fact Virgin leave all their crap off of it, and its network unlocked
Can it get any better for £25pm?? lol
Just checked with an Orange sim, was able to make a phone call no probs, so is def unlocked..... MINT!!!!!
Most networks xcept everything everywhere (orange+tmob) r doing it unlocked and debranded atm
Hope it's unlocked, presumably because it's in short supply they are just getting hold of whatever they can.

Yep. £15 a month.
Just got my Desire today on the following deal via here:
FREE HTC Desire on 12 month contract!!!!
300 minutes to any network and unlimited texts
Virtually unlimited mobile internet
Total cost £360.00 over contract length
£30.00 per month - £40.00 before cashback
Have had Windows Mobile OS phones since the SPV and gone through XDA Exec and my last the Diamond and the difference between the Desire and Diamond is crazy!
Hopefully I will be able to offer some help, tips, apps etc via posts here as I get my bearings with Android etc.

Operator Desire VS proper SIM free Desire

Is there any advantage to getting a desire thats been nowhere near o2/Voda/3/Orange/T-Mobile ?
The proper sim free Desire will not have any network branding or apps installed and it will be first in line for any updates released by HTC. Plus, you won't have to run the risk of debranding the phone and losing its warranty
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
YES!
Orange have mutilated the Desire, ****ed around with the apps, broken the browser, and muddled up the voicemail - it's a car crash.
T-Mo have been kinder, but they decided to volume limit the damned thing, which is hugely annoying when your favourite tune come on.
I don't know what Voda, O2 or 3 have done to theirs.
However, you can always debrand a carrier-subsidised phone by flashing the ROM, it's an easy procedure (search - there are loads of guides) but it might void your warranty. If the operator's ROM is available in the wild then you might be able to reflash it before sending it off for repair, but you cannot flash an older bootloader over a newer one which might put you in a pickle in 18 months time if your debranded phone's been updated a few times OTA and only old operator ROMs are available.
Therefore, your best bet is to get it unbranded, you could eithe pay £380 full whack for it or get it from Carphone Warehouse or online and get the benefit of the subsidy as well.
It's an amazing phone, man, AMAZING!

Just whack "htc desire" into Google shopping. Saw it on Amazon for £390 or so earlier today.
I think play.com are doing it for 389 now.
me thinks cpw will be 399.99 richer tomorrow
and I will be 130 poorer (sold my iphone 3gs for 270 today)
are the cpw ones proper sim free's?

It'd be first to get 'proper' FroYo but I don't like the trackball - one more thing to possibly break and if anything like my missus BlackBerry it'll stop working within a couple of months!
EddyOS, your local to me lol
also, I had a blackberry 8800
went through 5 trackballs in a year, but £10 for a bag 5, meh, wasn't fussed
Then they integrated in on the 1st Bold
I just hope the desire gets ginger bread.

Generic HTC Desire on Vodafone in the uk
I cant see any way my desire is locked, or modified by Vodafone - i used to avoid them in the past as Id seen the mess they made of some handsets, but to the best of my knowledge the one I got from them 6 weeks ago is completely standard.
I know it's not locked to any networks, already tried a few different sims in and it works fine, and nothing in the Software Info suggests locking or customisation.
If you need a contract of some sorts it seems a good plan, its a free phone and my contract works out at about £400 over the 18 months anyway, not to mention all the data text and calls i get in the deal

Guess I was lucky with my Three handset.
I took one out on a contract and got a totally unlocked and unbranded handset.
Apparantly it was because they were having problems getting three branded handsets so all the shops were send unlocked/unbranded ones to help with the demand!

It is interesting that Vodafone (UK) are not branding the Desire - their unlocked policy is well known.
When I compare a Vodafone handset to my unbranded (bought that way) Desire, the Vodafone handset has even less 'bloat-ware'!!!
As commented elsewhere, I will get any Firmware upgrades first - but I don't understand Vodafone's logic: -
No branding.
Unlocked.
So why not just hand out default unbranded HTC phones, if you're not going to control the experience...??
MMB.

Slight OT question... for UK users.

Hi guys, sorry for the OT. I have the Desire and a pay-as-you-go SIM from Talkmobile. Problem is, the reception is terrible, in my flat, restaurants, pubs, sometimes even outside. Many times I get the "no service" message.
I just rang Talkmobile to ask if a possible cause was the fact that they don't smartphones (I had talked to them a couple of weeks ago when I first got the Desire), which they confirmed could be the case, yes.
So my question is, what do you guys (and gals) think is the best network to move to? I would mainly need it for texts and internet. International calls would be a definite plus.
Thanks in advance

T-Mobile are the best imo, i get a whole month unlimited internet for £5 and if i top up £10 in a month i get unlimited free texts for the next month, there are also various voice packages you can buy
Thanks for the reply What you mentioned is on a pay-as-you-go card? Or only on contract?

its pay as you go
Great, thanks
There are some cracking sim-only deals going around. They are normally a 30 day rolling contract so you are tied in for just a month at a time but you do get very generous allowances with them.
I am on three and coverage is good as they "piggy-back" the t-mobile and orange networks when three coverage is low. They too offer good packages.
Have a look here:
http://threestore.three.co.uk/simonly.aspx
Phil
Thanks Phil, I'll look into 3 as well.
I have vodaphone and the coverage is generally quite good. I am on a monthly rolling contract but i also talk a lot so its £20 a month plus £5 for the internet, it is cheaper for a 12 month sim only but i am thinking of moving once i buy my wife a new mobile. You will probably find that the major networks will suit your needs some of the time depending on what part of the country you are in.

Absolute garbage I'm afraid!
Talkmobile is an MVNO than uses Vodafones network. Anywhere you get Vodafone coverage, you'll get Talkmobile coverage.
Given than Vodafones network is pretty extensive, I'd say the issue is more likely to be the radio on your phone. What baseband version are you using?
Regards,
Dave

Hi Dave. My baseband's 32.43.00.32U_5.09.00.20 (from this weekend's update). Signal reception's slightly better with Froyo than with 2.1, but the difference's marginal.

I find it hard to believe that Vodafones network would be that bad everywhere you go, which leads me to believe it may be a fault on your phone. Have you tried a SIM from a different carrier (not an MVNO) in your phone?

+1 Vodafone has signal in remote parts of Scotland where everything else fails,,,
No, I haven't had the chance to try another network's SIM unfortunately. It's the obvious test to perform but haven't had the chance.
I'll just order a TMobile free SIM and use it to test.
Just got home with a T-Mobile card and I can confirm I have better signal than I ever did with talkmobile

[Q] HTC One X on Softbank (Japan)

Hello,
So I gave Softbank a chance to bring a good international handset but they are just too involved with Apple they dont have much interest in Android. 2012 summer line up is a joke.
So I decided to buy an unlocked HTC One X. Unfortuntely I need to be in Softbank because all my family is in Softbank. Also I'm a little chicken when it comes to changing APNs and all that unofficially and running the risk of paying a lot of money for data.
So I called Softbank and asked them about getting their SIM for my own handset. The rep was constantly saying that they dont recommend it and I should first bring my handset to them to check. I know they will not pass HOX because its micro sim. Softbank does not support micro sim on this service.
And now I'm stuck with two options:
1) Use my existing silver SIM contract (not pre-paid)
2) MNP to BMobile
I want to ask you guys if any of you have just plugged your SIM (after cutting it) to HOX and it worked? I know 3G data will not work but voice and SMS?
Also, if I do not put a APN and just disable 3G data, would the phone work as normal? I do not want 3G as I'm mostly in a wifi area and I carry a WiMax when I go out.
I would appreacite any information on HOX on Softbank.
Thank you.
I gave my sim card the chop-chop and It's working fine inside the HOX. Go for it man, no problems at all as long as you know where to cut.

I just got my one x today. It's the international unlocked version. I just cut my sim card and put it in and it works perfectly. Don't worry just cut your sim and if you don't need wifi then disable mobile network, it will save you some battery as well.
Thanks Asavva.
If you dont mind can you give me some more details? As where you bought the phone (i'm going to buy from Expansys), and if you changed the APN settings etc.?
Also did you insert a black iphone sim or a normal silver sim?
Appreciate the information
Thank you Barondebxi.

No problem man. I've had the phone for 5 hours now ( it came from FedEx this afternoon here in the US), no issues at all. It's a very good looking phone. Wifi works very well, screen is AMAZING! I've already installed 2 updates. My phone was on 1.26, then I installed 1.28 and now 1.29.
Thank you.
I'm evry worried after reading all the issues HOX is said to have: wifi, screen flickering, battery heating, scratches on the screen, etc.
But I just cant make up my mind to go for GS3.. this phone is just too gorgeous..

Well it's funny cause for me, I had the galaxy s 3 preordered since yesterday morning. But they have delays because the supply is short so I bought the one x and got it delivered in 1 day. BUT personally I'm still going to buy the Galaxy S3, itt will be my main phone and this one will be my back up phone. Not to say it isn't as good but I'm more of a Samsung guy I guess. Nevertheless, this HTC one x is a beast! It's reallly the best thing HTC as ever released without a doubt.
Thank you Barondebxi.
I dont have a preference to either, its just that HOX looks better and I like the build than the GS3 plastic frame.
But I'm gonna give it a couple of weeks and see. Its very important that wifi works. Else I have no use from the phone. If the issues seems to persist I might as well go with a GS3.

Either phone you choose you will be happy. But if you're afraid of running into some issues, I think the S3 is a better choice right now. But both are epic phones. Ok I'm going to bed. Take care!
I completely agree, SoftBank's Summer 2012 line-up was not worth waiting for. As of now, I live in Japan, but don't have a Japanese phone and was planning on going with a Galaxy S3 whenever docomo wants to release it... however, I do believe I would like the One X more. Are you certain that if I bought the international version, that it would not work with SoftBank's 3G?
Yes. Softbanks 2012 line up was crap. Just some Sharp phones.
I was originally planning on MNP'ing to Docomo and get a GS3. With the MNP discount it'd been a good deal.
But since my family are on Softbank it'd be cheaper for me to be in SB. Also I'm liking HOX more than GS3. It's one sexy phone. GS3 is more like a slightly modified GN and I'm hating "prebble blue".. what were they thinking!? And I'm not a white phone person.
I\m pretty certain that international unlocked HOX will work on SB, but you will need to have a SIM. SB will not provide you with a SIM for HOX, unless you buy a pre-paid version and use that SIM. I have seen on web that HOX works with SB network, but for 3G data you wil need to find the APN details. The one on the web are for iphone (black sim). I think the APNs are different for silver SIM. I also asked from Expansys and they said HOX works on Softbank, but I cannot guarantee whether they actually know it for a fact. But there is no reason it would not as it supports WCDMA (this will not work on AU though). Let me know if you go for it.

Your first paragraph consists of my exact thoughts and plans, although I have no family here, it seems like my co-workers use either docomo or SoftBank. The only way I'd go with SoftBank however is if 3G on the One X works with their network.
I'm hoping one of my friends still has his SoftBank iPhone microSIM card. If he does, I'm going to ask him to mail it to me, then buy the One X from Amazon and see if it works. According to Wikipedia, SoftBank runs on 1500/2100... the 1500 band that the One X doesn't seem to support. What are your thoughts on that?
Have a look at these links Habbit.
http://www.maru-kajiri.com/2012/04/htc-one-x-softbanksim.html
http://www.maru-kajiri.com/2012/04/htc-one-x.html
I highly doubt HOX will not work on SB network. I use a Desire from SB now and the radio is the same as HOX. I doubt SB changed the baseband of HTC phones. And if the SB iPhone SIM works on HOX, there is no reason for it not to work on HOX. I doubt the frequencies are different for iPhone (black SIM) and other (real smartphones (silver SIM).
BTW, why would you buy from Amazon (Amazon Japan I suppose)? They are little expensive than Expansys and also Expansys offers extended warranty. I'm not sure the warranty of when you buy from Amazon (because I dont think its directly sold from Amazon Japan). I thought if I buy from Exapansys it'll be easier to deal with warranty and other issues (basically because my Japanese is not good).
Also, as difficult as it is, I;m going to hold off buying HOX for couple of weeks, because of the Wifi issues its been having. I'm gonna wait till Expansys get new stocks and also see how these issues turn up in next few weeks.
Actually I was going to get it from Amazon US (even cheaper than Expansys) and either have my mom ship it to me, or have my co-worker bring it back when he takes a business trip to Colorado. Haha
Are the WiFi issues that widespread?
Yes it is. Particularly with earlier models. Worst, it could be well be a hardware issue.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1688538&page=2
Interesting... I would really rather have the One X over the Galaxy S3, but that issue could be pretty annoying. How do you discover when Expansys receives new shipments of One X's?
I cut my Softbank silver SIM into Micro.
Enter open.softbank.ne.jp setting in APN.
Get 3G/H, SMS (both sending/receiving), Voice all great.
But I used WiFi most of the time cuz I dont wanna get a huge Data bill from Softbank. Heard so many stories about rumors on the forum.
Still working on MMS setting.

Thank you.

Thank you very much BrianInfo.
Could you please give me some more info regarding the phone.
1) I'm also very worried about getting a huge bill and I want 3G data disabled. So what if I dont put the APN address and leave it blank? Will voice/SMS still work?
2) Can you also share how you bought the phone? and also its HW version number. I'm planning on buying through Expansys but seem there service is not that good.
3) Do you have any wifi issues with the phone?
THank you very much.
How would I go about getting the SoftBank Unlimited Data (Flat-Rate?) plan if I have neither SoftBank service nor a microSIM? Should I have one of my co-workers say they broke their microSIM card or something and ask SoftBank for a replacement for me to use, or should I sign up for a cheap phone and then change my plan after I sign my contract?
