3g data problems - Desire General

Sometimes - especially after a long time in a building in central london with inexplicably poor 3d reception - my phone just refuses to connect to 3g even when in a strong 3g area. I try turning the mobile connectivity off/on and this very rarely does the trick; more often it either does nothing, or doesn't even complete. It just sits there saying `connecting`. If I turn my phone off and on again then reception is restored. My phone is fine in all other respects (wifi is very fast), and the data does work fine most of the time.
Does anyone else have this problem? Is it just orange? Is there some other way of getting the resetting functionality of turning it off and on without actually doing so?

Orange UK handset? Lots of threads on this already...
Of the various mods I've read about, changing the preferred network type has had the best results. My phone is usable again.
Dial *#*#4636#*#*
Change the network type to GSM auto (PRL)
Upgrading your radio version is the next step and is something I intend to do eventually... the phone needs unlocking first. The above method has made my phone usable in the mean time.

Yeah, I read a lot of them. None of them make any difference for me.

I've no interest in unlocking or flashing my phone. I just want to use the internet on my phone. Apparently this is a problem on the Desire.

Assuming you're on Orange? You didn't say.
They've got their branded 1.21 OTA update in the pipeline that will almost certainly include a radio update that many have reported improves signal and 3G/HSDPA pickup.
If you want that now, you can flash to a generic 1.21 ROM using a goldcard. You'll need to buy an unlock code for around £15.
You can either wait for Orange to release the update (keeping your warranty), Or go get it yourself now. Woth bearing in mind that you'll get Froyo faster if you get a generic ROM...

Yeah, I'm on Orange UK. I like the idea of generic roms, but I'm sort of put off by all the reports of people bricking their phones. Also, I'm used to HTC's sense UI. By all accounts the standard Android interface is a little dull. It's actually the HTC widgets I'd probably miss most, though. I guess it depends on exactly what is in 2.2, really. Functionality is more important to me than a wizzy front end, and Orange have made something of a mess of 2.1 on the Desire (breaking reflow on the browser, removing google talk but leaving the service running, putting loads of crap on like facebook which you can't remove and which gives me a daily reminder that there are updates available which i don't want and can't disable).

Why not flash a custom ROM like Pays Desire Sense: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=674688
It's not Froyo but it's a great 2.1 ROM that will get rid of all the annoying **** from the Orange/Generic ROM and adding some nice new stuff, all while keeping Sense and all the HTC UI stuff.
I had the problem with the data connection as well but it's fixed now I flashed the radio after unlocking. You can get an unlock code for £10 and it's actually an investment in terms of resell value for the phone, plus of course you can then use whatever radio you want rather than waiting on Orange OTA updates.
You can always reflash to Orange stock if you ever have any warranty issues.
It can seem a bit daunting at first if you are not used to flashing ROM's but as long as you can follow a handful of well documented step by step instructions that are given it's easy, and there is so much to be gained.
Don't put up with what you don't like when there are relatively easy fixes.

Orange UK Only - What's Best Radio with WM6?

Could I please be so greedy as to have a Orange-UK only thread?
I am been reading and searching in earnest to see what other peoples experiences are with the various Radio ROMs. It seems most people are happy with 1.38.00.10, although seems to be a few instances of people sticking with older versions because of battery life/drop outs/data freezes. But I am unable to establish what other people are experiencing in the UK on Orange's network.
I am well familiar with the Radio ROM 1.38 + WM6 - good or bad? thread, but not many people in there commenting on Orange UK.
If you are on Orange UK, please can you share you experiences here?
My own experience has been thus.
Before upgrading to WM6, was on stock M3100, which had Radio 1.06 I beleive. This worked flawlessy with push email (Exch 2003), and never had any problems at all with it. This was also the case when I upgraded to LVSW 20070315, leaving Radio Rom as was.
Then I upgraded to Black 2.0 last week, and did the Radio to 1.34 with it. I didnt notice any problems at first, or rather didnt take much notice of not getting email notifications whilst at work. But on Friday I realised the Data connections were freezing.
I have tried going to 1.38.00.10, to 1.35, back to 1.06, even 1.27. Have also tried going back to LVSW 20070315, and am now on LVSW 20070408
I have narrowed it all down to the "common" problem in swicthing between GSM and 3G. At home I seem to be between 3 transmitters, and swicthing is common. Hence the problems I was having Friday.
The Excellent commmgrpro has helped here. Also Bandswitch.
Anyway, with Phone set to GSM only I have no problems. Odd thing is, driving to Sheffield and back yesterday (dont mention the football!!), with phoen set to Auto, I had no problems at all.
Yet at home, and at work, on auto the data connection freezes.
So.... Whats everyone else using on Orange?
i've been using rom 3.23.0.2 with radio 1.38.00.10 on a spv m3100. this device is been freezing like you described in your post, thing is, it's become unuseable since you have to reboot after the freeze and it happens almost continiously... driving me insane.
if anyone knows of a way how to get back wm5, i'd appreciate it!
freben
When I upgraded a while ago I was wondering the same thing. The only negatives re 1.38 at the time seemed to come from orange UK customers so I went for the 1.27 radio and it seems fine.
Have not yet stepped up further, and at the moment, see no reason to.
Especially as I can even get the H now and then. (If it aint broke...)
@Phil, I've "gone black" (v 2.0) with Radio 1.38.00.10 - only since Saturday, so it may be too early to tell. I've got a push email account with Mail2Web, which I don't tend to use that regularly - it's good for aggregating lots of mail stuff when I go away on business, but my data package ain't up to much (don't get me started ) so I only switch it on when required.
Since installing the new ROM/Radio/SPL, my M3100 seems to be much better than it was prior to the update. I've reinstalled all my apps (apart from PPCProfilesPRO - I'll do that tonight) and the phone seems really stable - no more random lockups when taking it off charge and only a couple of "slowdowns" when ending calls, or if Activesync'ing....can't really complain if I'm honest
I'll keep an eye on things - and maybe switch on the Exchange push email for a couple of days - and I'll post again if the situation changes.
Cheers,
Mark.
PS - Message for @freben; read MrVanx's guide on downgrading to WM5 - see THIS POST for details of how to find it.
MrVanx kindly provides a guide here: http://www.mrvanx.myzen.co.uk/hermes_guide/Downgrade/
Do please read very carefully before trying it
Yep...1.27 for me. No real radio problems to report.
Spent a couple of weeks with WMXL 2.0 and the last two weeks with Black 2.0. Both work fine with Orange with 3g (inc HSDPA) and voice. Direct push/web/pop email all fine.
One freeze this morning (first one in two weeks) but dont know if it was radio or os or an app?
Can;t compare with other radios but simply can say am happy with 1.27 (hence why I havent tried 1.38 etc)
Having no problems with set up in sig.
had the freezing with the stock set up.
Could/should we be more scientific here and use one of the many web2.0 survey sites to do a ROM/OS survey to find the right mix?
with a little effort we could then find the most reliable Radio ROM and view by Country/OS/carrier/etc.
just a suggestion..

@Mark,
try Orange World Browsing, 8ukp for unlimited data access 24/7
Give O a call on 150 and then the billing option, 4
Orange World Browsing is what is what the O rep told me it was listed as. I think one of the key points is the cost, it’s 6.81 exc VAT or 8 inc VAT, that’s the way to check you have the right package.
And you need to be on a 35ukp per month tarif or more to get it.
apologies for off topic post!!

My bill confirms it as Orange World Browsing -although I too thought it was OWU.
Not sure if it is still so hard to get as it once was.
Sheep_Head - Well, I am definetely up for using a survey site - any recommendations?
I gave re-flashed my phone back to Black 2.0. Seems to be what most people are using here (IMHO). Have tried Radio 1.27, 1.38.00, and right back to 1.07.
With a totally clean device (i.e. straight after flashing), setting up the orangeinternet connection manually, the thing just wont connect to 3G. Only when I have Band set to GSM will it connect.
Jeez!
I am now in the process of going back to an Orange WM5 rom, to see if it makes any difference, (albeit the Romanian one, so will have to reset the internet connection).
Getting mildly frustrated now.
OK, I'm now back to Orange Radio version, and Orange WM5 -(Romanian!)
Entered Orange Internet settings. And have gained nothing. COnnects via GSM, but not via 3G.
Grrrrrr....
Spoke to Orange CS - no reported 3G problems in my area (well, what about me???).
What's the panel's opinion on sending a phone back to O with OliPro's bootloader on it? (well, and the Romanian Rom, but they prob wouldnt spot that).
I have insurance etc, so would get a replacement in advance....

Hey guys - mega useful thread.
I 'thought' I had solved all of my woes and was feeling bloody smug with myself as I thought I had managed to keep the stupid questions down to a minimum. After reading this obviously not .
I am running Black v2.0 (happily) and the rest of the handset is as per my sig block but I have removed spb pocketbooks and replaced it with shell. I thought it was all working correctly but I am suffering the same connectivity issues as yourself (gprs and not 3G).
Also - and I have read the threads but still not working (was going to try again after a re-re-re build I still have no VM notifications.
Anything I can help with or test let me know and I will do what I can.

I have just tested the voicemail fix again since my reinstall and the certificates cab plus installing the sms dll has always worked for me.
Are you having any specific issues with it?
CrazyC,
I am struggling with the whole copying over of the .dll file in the widows directory. Like I said I have done a search of the wiki on VM notifications etc and followed the directions. I have attempted using Activesync but keep getting a response saying that the destination is in use. I have tried directly on the handset (not expecting it to work) and it doesn't and finally I tried by using Total Commander. Still no joy. I will keep going with it though as I was thinking about building again from fresh anyways, and then attempting the vm notification from clean.
Gonna wait out for black v2.5 before I do that however.
Cheers for getting back to me though!

The only way I have done this recently is using Resco File Explorer. You need to go into the Options menu to ensure you can see all files, then copy the sms_providers.dll into the \Windows directory. It warns you, but if you say yes it lets it happen. I have done this numerous times (have flashed my phone about 10 times recently!) without any problems!

First few times I did this, it just copied OK with the file explorer. Most recently tho it gave me the same error - so I went to the zip file on my ppc and told it to extract directly to the windows folder, said yes to overwrite and it did. Maybe worth a try. (install the certs first incase it makes a difference.)
SMS Providers CAB
To make my life easier I put the sms_providers.dll from WM5 into a CAB. To install make sure you've installed the sdk certificates (http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=35814&d=1174572298) first and then install this cab - a soft reset is requested at the end of installation and is required.
I've tested this on the latest LVSW ROM and it works perfectly, hopefully will overcome peoples issues with copying this file.

Quality check - for current owners??

http://stuff.tv/news/HTC-Desire-fails-T-Mobile-quality-checks-store-availability-delayed/14293/
Could this be for current owners as well?
Slightly worrying as I've got one from T-Mobile. Couple of things keeping me from being too worried:
1. I haven't noticed anything awry yet
2. If there is a glitch, it seems to be software based, so flashing the phone with/when the generic HTC ROM is officially publicy available (which I intended to do, anyway) should fix it.
load of bull because its available in shops now
I think it's likely that we've got phones with bugs and will get OTA update soon.
i wonder what about the unlocked and unbranded phones from mobiles.co.uk ?
maybe they had the t-mob versions and just unlocked them ?

Maybe so. lets wait and see. if its a software bug, i can live with that as it can get rooted/updated but if its a hardware issue.
well were ****ed then
My only grief until now is the absence of the voice-to-text facility. HTC have specifically mentioned this on desirehtc.com -> Android. They mention that "Rather excitingly, it brings us into a realm where voice-to-text is a reality in all text fields. Imagine sending texts or emails simply by talking to your phone. Now do it, we're there." How the t-mobile desire version did not get it is beyond me at the moment.
I find it strange that they only included the HTC Touch keyboard and removed the standard Android one. I ran both on my G1 and it was each to switch input methods with a simple long hold in a text entry field.
-deleted...-
Can't say I have seen anyone complaining of any problems yet.
Can't be that serious can it!
If it's a software problem it will soon be fixed. If it's a hardware problem I guess we will have our phones replaced.
I wouldn't worry about it. I would rather have the phone now with the seemingly trivial problem.
I flashed the Generic ROM anyway but I wouldn't recommend it as it's not possible to revert to the T-mobile ROM if you need to.

Debranded Desire won't connect to mobile operator

I bought a HTC Desire branded to Orange UK trough eBay when i was working there last month. The First thing i did was to debrand it using the 1.15.405.2 that i found on MoDaCa, and i bought a unlock key on eBay. This solution worked pretty well until the OTA update showed up, the i got the known WiFi issue. That was no biggie either, just installed the RUU of the 1.21.405.2 and the new Radio, and everything seemed to be perfect again
BUT THEN, two days ago, my phone suddenly lost it's connection to the my mobile operator . I tried to swap my sim card with another sim card, and the result was that my HTC Desire wouldn't get connection while my sim card worked well in the other phone. I also browsed trough my menus to try to find something that might be wrong, but no luck. If i tried to connect to my mobile operator manually, i got a message saying something like "SIM-card doesn't allow connection to this network".
Yesterday morning, i called HTC to try to find out if this might be a hw or sw malfunction, and he advertised me to do a factory settings restore and felt pretty confident that it only was the sw letting me down. I did as he suggested and boom, it worked...for about 5-6 hours, then it came back. As if that wasn't annoying enough, a factory settings restore didn't do the trick this time, and neither did a reflash with the goldcard. I even formated my mSD to be sure there wasn't any kind of virus on it.
So please, if anyone in here got a tip regarding sw, let me know. I'm helpless without my dear phone...
Hmmm this is my biggest concern... I'm just about to buy an ebay Orange Desire and flash it with a stock ROM and unlock it.... kinda worrying as I'm no Linux man really...
im not sure if its the same thing but i have lost conection to t mobile on my desire twice now. first time was fixed by re entering the apn. this time no change. the differance is mine is un branded. i also cant do mms any more.
Unbranded and debranded, same ****, isn't it? Niter means branded...
Seems like i'm not the only one with this problem: http://forum.vodafone.co.uk/topic/5...nt-re-connect/page__view__findpost__p__405655
Lots of Vodafone users in that forum has similar issues, but most of them seems to have a workaround by turn off the back on, or go by airplane mode to get signal back, tat doesn't work for me. I tried to flash my phone once more, but still no luck.
I'm considering a root operation and install android 2.2 aka froyo, but i'm not even sure if that is possible since i got the bootloader version 0.80...
ive just got mine working again by resting the apns to default.
mms still not working though. i hope its not a voda problem i just paid off t mobile a years contract to join voda due to terrible reception and crap tech support.
what is that, and how do you do it? I would guess that a reset to factory default and/or a complete reflash would take care of such, whatever it is...
Yep I was about to ask the same thing! what is it and how do you turn it on/off?
go to settings - wirless & networks - mobile networks - access point names - then press the menu key and hit reset to default.
hope this helps you
That did the same thing as a "reset to factory defaults", but still doesn't work
I've an unbranded unlocked desire on 3 UK with original firmware and mine does drop out occasionally but always comes back perhaps its a desire quirk !

Suppose so, but unlike you and many others, mine doesn't come back I was hoping for a fix for this issue, but i'm afraid were talking about hw malfunction, let's hope i'm wrong...
Little update, just followed this guide, but that didn't change anything. As far as i know, i now got some kind of rooted version of HBOOT 0.75 and fw.ver. 1.15.405.4, dunno about radio version. But it also says that i'm not able to install a custom rom with this rooted version, but i might be able to completely root it now and then install a custom rom?
Yet another update, i did install the 2.2 Froyo following this guide, and unlike the HTC roms, this one indicates that i do have full/optimal connection to my mobile operator, but it still won't let me call, just replies with 'Mobile network not available'.
I kinda courages me to scream out loud ****!!! Yes, i mean it...
Feedback would be nice
Just a thought, may i be that the guy i bought the phone from could have reported it as stolen with the intention of getting an insurance fee? And as a result of that, my phone have been closed by the operator? Don't even know if they mind doing such across the border. So the question would be: Is there any way to find out if my phone has been remotely closed?
Call your carrier.... they will be able to tell you if the phone is connecting to the nextwork correctly... ask them if not... why not?
I second that suggestion, try calling your carrier. Also I have found that switching the internet on directly through settings rather than using the widgets solved my connection problem.

Yep, i got contact with the seller from eBay, and he is very helpful, so he will do what he can while i will call my carrier first thing in the morning. Seems like there might be a glitch here, but i'll keep you updated on my progress.
argh, it seems like i wont get anywhere with my phone. I'm considering trying to change the IMEI, i know it's illegal, but i paid £360 for this device, and atm it's useless to me. If i only knew how tho change the imei, not exactly easy information to obtain, not even with google...

So have you found out why your having problems?
ah, sorry, thought i already told u guys, lol. Well, for some reason the phone is IMEI locked. The seller says that he did call to lock a sim card when he lost his iphone, and it might be related since it's the sim that was suppose to be in my phone. however, i think he either claimed the phone stolen to commit insurance fraud, or it's simply stolen. Another thing i came across was that the operator might blacklist the phone if it's unlocked without their blessing, don't really know if they can do that.
Either way, the only way for me to make this phone work is to convince the police that it's not stolen (i need a recite for that which he won't provide me), or to change the imei code with my "awesome" hacking skills...

Desire Z is behaving badly

I have been experiencing weird glitches with my desire z and just wanted to see if anyone else is experiencing the same issues.....ill try be as descriptive as possible and apologies if they are covered elsewhere (i have searched but cant find much)
First off its a uk sim free purchased from play.com for £420 by my misses to me as a christmas present, its also stock with the 1.72 update.....but its made in china? previous threads dont really say much about this and it doesnt strike me as being unusual for such a large company to produce there? could be wrong? either way i havent checked the IMEI with HTC yet....anyway quirks are as follows
1. Screen jumps up and down when keyboard is out in landscape and texting....by that i mean text display window drops out of view thus stopping me typing until i manually scroll the screen down to make the text entry box visible again and this happens multiple times per message
2. Wifi indicator intermitantly drops off even though wifi appears connected (via power control widget)
3. In low light conditions the keyboard backlight displays flicks on and off? Im guessing this is 'normal' though as waving hand in front of the display sensor also affects this....again still annoying
4. Message notifications dont drop of the notifiction bar unless manually cleared even if the message is read ?....cant remeber if thats normal behaviour...annoying either way
5. Swype doesnt always work post 1.72 even after re installed (as per advice)
6. Gameloft games refuse to work again post 1.72....can start new game but not continue exisiting....just exits to homescreen
Apologies for the war and peace but trying to work out if anyone else is experienceing similar......am pretty bugged with it since i took the update and am trying to establish if my issues are the result of the update or not
Oh and err if its any consolation the hinge is solid......!!!
cheers peeps
On point 2, the power controls does not indicate that WiFi is connected, only that it's enabled.
Sorry I'm not sure with the rest of your issues because I have not experienced those or don't use those apps.

A new temp-root method for Desire Zs with the 1.72 update has been found and is posted in the development section. Lots of people seem to be having success with it judging by the feedback. For full root and s-off, you'll have to temp-root with psneuter, downgrade the OTA, then use gfree.

A new temp-root method for Desire Zs with the 1.72 update has been found and is posted in the development section. Lots of people seem to be having success with it judging by the feedback. For full root and s-off, you'll have to temp-root with psneuter, downgrade the OTA, then use gfree.

Cheers,
I've had a look....unfortunately I dont have the associated degree in quantum physics in order to follow the steps lol.....I think i'll wait until a more 'straight forward' way becomes available.....I wont be accepting any more updates in the meantime however ha

M8 can't receive calls, flashed wrong ROM? (4G problem)

Yesterday I flashed my AT&T HTC M8 to a custom ROM (Wolla) because my phone was really laggy after the Lollipop update, and I noticed that although I am still able to make calls, I cannot receive calls anymore. I am wondering if it is possible that I messed up a step somewhere (especially step 3), or if I flashed my phone with the wrong ROM?
I also looked around on XDA more, and realized a few people also had this problem, and it was resolved by turning 4G data off. Apparently this is a problem with AT&T activating Voice over LTE, and the custom ROM not supporting/compatible. Is there a suggested fix to this problem (eg. flash back to the RUU on HTC's site)?
Here are the instructions that I followed to flash the new ROM:
Unlocked my phone via the HTCDev website
Installed TWRP
(Here is where I think the problem occured). I downloaded the Wolla Marshmallow ROM from the XDA thread, and took the boot.img image from the .zip into my fastboot folder.
Then in fastboot, I typed in "fastboot flash boot boot.img", then "fastboot reboot" to reboot my phone.
HOWEVER, my phone would be stuck in white Android booting screen, and wouldn't move for around 10 minutes, so I thought it was stuck.
I redid step 4 a few times, but the same thing always occured.
Finally, I decided to take the boot.img file from an RUU from HTC's website, and use that instead of the boot.img from the Wolla .zip file.
Now my phone boots, and everything seemed to work.
The only issue is that although I can make phone calls, I cannot seem to receive phone calls. It doesn't "ring" on the caller's end, and goes to voicemail in the end.
Does anyone have any experience with this?
My phone is an HTC One M8 bought from AT&T, unlocked about a year ago.
You're on the right track (AT&T's deployment of VoLTE is the problem), and there is one more suggestion I can make: call AT&T and have HD Voice (their branding of VoLTE) turned off for your account. Details here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=62001970&postcount=28
Not a true "fix" as obviously, you will not have VoLTE if you do this. But its not a bad compromise, IMO. Not may folks are going to miss VoLTE, and at least the above workaround will allow you to use the custom ROM you want, and have LTE data.
Your other option, is to use an AT&T-based ROM. But who the heck wants that?
I think I'll hit up AT&T chat support today to turn it off, thanks!
I'm sure there are a lot of other AT&T users using custom ROMs on the HTC M8 on this forum. Are all these people getting this problem too, or are they using a special ROM that doesn't run into this issue?
Edit: I'm also a little worried if this problem might occur on other 4G networks internationally? I tend to go abroad once or twice every year, and have a SIM card for the other countries I go to. Is this an AT&T specific issue, or would I run into this problem for every country that also uses HD Voice?

Note that the base level customer service probably can't turn off HD Voice (won't know what you are talking about, or even wrongly claim it can't be done). Ask to talk to a Tier 2 (or some such term) tech support.

If you click on the full thread, for which my previous linked post is from, you'll see that there are a good number of folks that had the same issue. And that is just on that one thread, there have been others (like this one of yours).
Plus, there are other variables that will effect whether AT&T users (on "international" based ROMs) will see this issue or not, such as whether HD Voice has been deployed in their market or not (heck, lots of places don't even have LTE yet, much less HD Voice), or whether the HD Voice feature was ever turned on for their account.
Personally, I have yet to see this problem, despite being on several different non-ATT ROMs and frequently travelling to various US regions. So I'm guessing in my case, HD Voice was never activated on my account.

From what I can gather, this is entirely an AT&T issue. Although nothing is a sure bet when travelling international, I'm sure you probably already well know if you travel abroad occasionally. In particular, LTE implementations seems a lot less standardized from one country to another than 3G or 2G. But falling back to 3G is not a bad option, if you end up needed to. Really, unless you are streaming video a lot, or downloading huge files, 3G is really all you'll need most of the time.
So I think I found might have accidentally found a way to deal with this problem without calling AT&T.
On my stock ROM, I turned of the VoLTE (HD calls or whatever) options under data connections.
Made a few calls to myself to made sure that it was dropping to 3G (ect...) when I called it.
Afterwards I flashed a custom ROM (the new sense 8 rom by sundream) and my phone could still receive calls as it dropped it for 3G.
While you don't have VoLTE you could avoid the hassle of calling AT&T.
